Let's Talk About...

The Playlist

11 years ago by

While Garance (& Emily) are killing it with the Jillian Michaels workout this spring, I’ve decided that my year long “vacation” from running is finally over and I’m hitting the pavement…

As soon as I revamp my workout playlist (excuses, excuses)…

I must listen to music while I’m running. It’s rare that I just feel so great about running that all I need is the sound of birds chipring and my feet hitting the black top to keep me motivated (so rare, that actually, it has never happened). I have fairly eclectic tastes when it comes to music, so my current running playlist is all over the place (think Rihanna followed by Hanson) and I need a little refresh. I asked everyone at the studio for their #1 get-in-gear-pump-it-up song…the results:

Garance: Missy Elliot, All of The Cookbook album (From G: It’s my favorite in the world. At “We Run This” I just stop and dance and sing!)

Emily: Jay-Z, On to the Next One

Christiana: The White Stripes, Seven Nation Army

Scott: Kanye West, Power Remix ft. Jay-Z

Theodora: Danity Kane, Damaged

Me (Alex): Girl Talk, Play Your Part, Pt.1

Tell me yours!! What songs should I be adding to my playlist?

    PHOENIX- lisztomania!

  • Second that!! Basically the whole album of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix!! ;)

  • Jaguar Love – Polaroids and Red Wine
    Fatboy Slim- The Rockafeller Skank

  • I can’t run on the songs mentioned….i need a beat. So for me it’s armin van buuren, swedish house maffia, tiesto, david guetta. Especially the remixes are great, you get in a kind of runners trance!

  • i am the same when it comes to working out and music, i love to listen to beyonce… yes yes to pretend I’m her and her voice makes me feel like i can conquer the squats i put myself through. Also the N.E.R.D ‘IN search of’ album makes me feel alive and happy and gives me energy for when i feel like i can’t go on paha.

My tip to getting through a workout is to ‘just pretend your beyonce’ paha

  • I’m with you on the music and running bit! Check out the music site, Songza. It’s like Pandora but more curated. I listen to their rap playlists on my runs. Frat House Rap is my favorite :)

    http://songza.com/search/?q=rap

  • The most consistent albums in my running playlist are The Gossip’s “Standing in the Way of Control”, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion’s “Acme”, and “40oz to freedom” by Sublime. Very random, I know, but it works for me.

  • I like sooo many. Now I am big fan of Wisin y Yandel but now I loooov some older one.. It is Don Omar – Salio el Sol. That song is for me now the beeest. Have a nice day

  • I’ve read somewhere that Madonna listens to Peaches when she’s working out …

  • Right now: Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke, Pharrell and TI. Once you hear this song you’ll listen to it on repeat for at least a week, it’s hypnotizing! ?

  • Cypress hill, jay z….looots of jay z, 2pac,pitbull, nas, jamiroquai, beyonce, beastie boys, kris kros- my biking mix is all over the place, but it just gets me going:)…..and i have to be careful not to over do it, which is good and bad when working out. Love my ipod!

Get Lucky de Daft Punk feat. Pharrell & Nile Rodgers bien sur!

  • Everybody de Martin Solveig!

  • -Dancing on my own- Robyn
-I don’t feel like dancin’ -Scissor Sisters

  • Spectrum Florence & the Machine
    le nouveau Daft Punk, evidemment!!!

  • YEAH! the drums in Florence’s music make my running so epic haha

  • Sun, Caribou
    No consolation prizes, Phoenix
So will be now, John Talabot ft Pional
    and of course Rihanna !!
I need some new ideas for my playlist too !

  • Caroline April, 22 2013, 12:58 / Reply

    Get lucky des Daft Punk….

  • Add the Yeah Yeah Yeahs onto there and some of THIS. I just start singing swwwweeettt nothing!!!! and prancing around the drop.

    http://www.jenandlek.blogspot.com

Anything off of Silent Alarm by Bloc Party. I’ve been running non-stop to this album since it came out – the drums are killer – so much that now if I ever hear it when I’m not running, I have an overpowering urge to start!

  • Great play list, it’s always hard to find the right playlist. When I have slow numbers I can’t run hard enough but when I have a real up tempo one I run way too hard!! xx

  • Canned Heat byJamiroquai

    best running song ever

  • The pointer sister i’m so exited!!!

  • I understand you, I don’t go running, but when I go walking I need to listen to music. Even when I exercise at home I must listen to music, it helps me to stay “focused”!
Right now, I’m in love with “Love is blindness” by Jack White (a U2 cover), it’s in the soundtrack of “The Great Gatsby” and “Miracle” by Hurts. But I also love “I love it” by Icona Pop, it’s such a cute song!

Nan mais vraiment, try it!!!

  • mine is also on to the next one by jay-z …. and I think also upgrade u by beyonce

Queen – Don’t stop me know (this one can sound very cynical sometimes when you run)
Jet – Are you gonna be my girl
Stevie Wonder (or George Michael and Mary J Blige) – As
Ratatat – Loud Pipes (basically all their songs)
    Missy Elliot – Loose control
A Tribe Called Quest – Once again (remix by Bit Funk)
Destin’y Child – Bill bill bill
    Azealia Banks – 212
    Daft Punk – Aerodynamic
    Cassius – Toop toop
Two Doors Cinema Club – What you know
    Haim – Forever

    Have a nice run ;)

  • Eulenhaupt and Mollenhauer: Nouvelle chance (club mix): has the perfect tempo for me for running.
and it is making me run, somehow, cause it reminds me of my love, and I want to look amazing for him (and me to be super all cool and confident)

    :)

  • All of the Super Mash Bros Album ‘Mile(y) High Club’- best thing to run to ever!

  • To stay with the theme of the boom box and hi-tops…
My favorite spin instructor played 80’s music and I swear I never thought I’d work out to Depeche Mode, but everytime I hear “Never Let Me Down”, it motivates me to jump on a bike! Ironically, almost all of these songs have titles that have to do with working out! ;)

    Other 80’s faves:
    “Let’s Dance”, David Bowie
    “Promises, Promises”, Naked Eyes
“Space Age Love Song”, Flock of Seagulls

    Old School Hip Hop faves:
    “Move Somethin”, Talib Kweli
    “Respiration”, Mos Def, Talib Kweli
“The Chase, Pt 2”, A Tribe Called Quest

Anything SAMBA! It’s quick-paced and light- good for people who are bothered by the heavy bass drone. I recommend anything by Jorge Benjor!

My Top 3 to Run : Kill Me – Make the Girl Dance
    We come together – Goldfish
    Cassius – Foals
Nothing more perfect to get in the mood to run (and maybe my shameful one : Temperature – Sean Paul, I confess)

    Bises

  • I know you are gonna laugh, but recently i have had a big ” high” during my running with rock sugar (from way back) by rob grill ( it’s a bit like running with ” fame” song!!)

  • I am the SAME. I am pathetic without music, these songs usually make me forget what I’m doing tho ;) :

City of Dreams – Dirty South & Alesso
Sweet Nothing – Calvin Harris ft. Florence W.
Sabali (vitalic remix)- Amadou & Mariam
    Elevation – U2
Ininna Tora (Stylus Robb & Abm Mix (REMIX)
Get ur freak on – Missy E. & Nelly Furtado
(cool down/warm up) Let it Be- Blackmill

  • Icona Pop – I Love It (I sweat, but I don’t care, I LOVE IT!)

Lana Del Rey – Blue Jeans Gesaffelstein Remix (Nothing like this beat!)

David Guetta & Snoop Dog – Sweat (sweat it like it’s hoooooot)

The Script – Hall of Fame (imagine you’re crossing the finishline of your first marathon)

Christina Aguilera & Pitbull – Feel This Moment (Feel this moment, hear the birds chip, hear yourself catching your breath, feel it, embrace it!)

  • I’m just starting back up with running too! I’ve been needing some ideas for a good playlist too.

Right now: CSS, Cults, Purity Ring, Sleigh Bells, Ladyhawk… usually I like upbeat stuff.

  • Panic Station – Muse
Get Lucky – DaftPunk ft Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers
Lonely Boy – The Black Keys
Can’t Stop feeling – Franz Ferdinand
Lift off – Jay-Z & Kanye West ft Beyonce ( and more generally their whole work, solo or together!)
    And many more!
But thanks to the comments, I’ll update my playlist as well!
Thanks for this +++ useful post and good luck with the running!

For about two years I didn’t listen to any music while running, it was so refreshing to hear my thoughts, listen to nature and stay in tune with what my body was doing…

    BUTT then,

I started to listen to music again, which was so refreshing to hear my favorite songs, choosing songs that I LOVE. Not like. Love. They make me break out in dance, sing in the bathroom and distract me…

My jams: Footloose by Blake Shelton/ Jump by Kris Kross/ David Guetta/ Without you by Usher/ Get you Girl by Chaz Shepherd…

    I recommend

He’s My Brother She’s My Sister – Nobody Dances in this town

  • Led Zep , Prince, White stripes, Bowie (époque Ziggy), Jimmy Hendrix, Artic monkeys…oh il y en a tellement…

  • Brittany April, 22 2013, 5:09 / Reply

Music like Girl Talk and dubstep music is the ONLY thing that works for me, because I get too impatient to wait for entire songs to end, and Girl Talk takes me quickly from one song/beat to the next before I can bored, and need to stop my run to change the song… because if I stop I’ll NEVER start running again. Cheers x

  • You probably don’t want my advice. Haha. I’m really weird and listen to NPR while I work out.

Survivor – Eye of the tiger !

  • Greyhound by Swedish House Mafia is a real powersong. The beat is so strong that your feet will lift off the ground automatically. Although, I cannot guarantee same results when you listen to it on repeat :P

  • Juliette April, 22 2013, 5:39 / Reply

I usually listen to Austra, Grimes, Porcelain Raft or Vampire Weekend when I’m running (but it’s not so often). The new song “Home” of Austra it’s really perfect !!

  • Beyonce- ‘Get me Bodied’ has a great beat for running and is my personal favorite.

  • You need latin music like Shakira, merengue, salsa, zumba and shake it the ass, hahaha…

  • I can strongly reccomend Beyonce’s album “4”. Most of these songs has a great vibe and rhythm, just perfect for jogging. Your legs will fly you away!

  • Maroon 5 – Little Of Your Time !

  • Anything by Phantogram.
Florence Welch & Calvin Harris & Diplo “Sweet Nothing”
Postal Service “Tattered line of string”
    Digitalism “Two Hearts”
    Chromatics “Cherry”

I am from the D, so Eminem , “Lose Yourself’ is on my list for sure!

  • Jamiroquai, Canned Heat!

  • I have very eclectic taste too Garance (with a weakness for the ’80’s) everything from Neil Young to Radiohead. There’s nothing like a good run on a crisp, cool, sunny morning. Here’s my pick;

    Africa…..Toto
    Small Town Boy….Bronski Beat
    I Ran….A Flock of Seagulls
    Sayshell….Telefuzz
    Sweet Disposition….The Temper Trap
    Ventura Highway…..America
    Get Lucky….Daft Punk
    Too Young….Phoenix
    Money….The Drums
Cut and Run….Beat Service (if you like trance)
    Running up that Hill….Kate Bush

    Hope you like these!

  • Jai Paul–St8 Outta Mumbai!

  • Ready to Start, arcade fire
Kreayshawn (might be misspelled, to ashamed of admitting it to check)
    List of Demands, Saul Williams
    M.I.A. anything, really
Iggy/stooges, search and destroy. This one for when I’m really dying.

  • Best song for running (my top 10):

    – Forever by Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne & Eminem ….(to really get into it)
    – Greyhound by Swedish House Mafia
    – Pon De Floor by Major Lazor (feat. VYBZ)
    – Not Afraid by (obviously) Eminem
    – Motion Sickness by Hot Chip
    – First of the Year and Kyoto by Skrillex
    – BURN by Big Sean & Meek Mill
    – Good Day Today by David Lynch
    – Default by Django Django….. (for the beat)
    – I’m Into You by Jennifer Lopez (feat Lil Wayne)

So as you see, I have bipolar music tastes (but they have all been tested and became great motivation)

N*E*R*D’s songs work for me! And the new (not so new anymore I guess) and hip “I Love It” by Icona Pop! Kanye and Jay-Z are staples along with Beyonce. I get goosebumps listening to “Love On Top”.

:) http://thecasualaffair.com/easy-sunday-t-rap-workout-mix/

Survivor – Eye Of The Tiger
Bryan Adams – Summer of ’69
The Doors – Break on through to the other side
Huey Lewis&The News – Power of love

These are all oldies but they never fade.

  • I’m trying out Tiësto’s Club Life Podcast on iTunes (it’s free), and it’s pretty good. My favourites are podcast no. 113, 148 and 158. Give them a chance – they build up and get better and better which fits perfectly with my running pattern seeing how the more I run, the more pumped up I need to get in order not to turn around and just walk back. Latest additions to my running playlist are She Makes Me Go by Arash feat. Sean Paul, Radioactive by Rita Ora, Happy by C2C feat. Derek Maratin and Right Now by Rihanna feat. David Guetta. The stables are You Make My Dreams by Hall & Oates (love it), Club Can’t Handle Me by Flo Rida, Barbra Streisand by Duck Sauce, Footloose by Kenny Loggins (looove it!), Right Here, Right Now + Rockafeller Skank by Fatboy Slim and the entire Watch The Throne album.
    Happy running!

  • Hi Alex!

I started jogging again last night, and this morning, I feel empowered!

Runkeeper is my new best friend! But first thing first, here is my playlist:

    Jamaica – I think I lije U2
Izia – On top of the world
    Django Django
Hey Champ – Cold dust girl
    Housse de Racket – Roman
Hani El Khatib – Build, Destroy, Rebuild
Empire of the sun – Walking on a dream

Now I need to get proper jogging earphones because they would not stay put in my ears.

    Any recommendations?

The Black Keys: even a lazy bag of potatoes like me gets motivated listening to their album!!

  • Miike Snow – Animal !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So good to listen to this while running! I’m stil an animaaaaaal

  • The Seed by The Roots!

  • Low by FloRida, gives great rythme, especially at the beginning of the run :-)

  • Strangely enough I do not necessarily like dynamic songs and I heard from a pro that while running it it not advisable to listen to music but to listen to your body, to what it needs…and if you run in a park you can always listen to nature’s sounds.

  • My current top 4:
I Follow Rivers (Magician Remix) – Lykke Li
Feel What You Want – Phonique & Rebecca
I Wrote The Book – Beth Dito
Mama Told Me – Big Boi

  • When I do my abs (I try to do it everyday, but I end up doing it twice a week…) I really need music as a support.

Lately it was work Iggy Azalea, but as Paula said M.I.A is awesome! any song would do it with her!

But it really depends the mood too!

  • I always listen to music I normally wouldn’t play unless working out. Take the LMFAO song, …”sexy and I know it…” I don’t like the group but when I hear that song, I can run for miles!!! (And I pretty much hate running.)

  • Le1f -Wut
    Maximum Balloon – Groove Me
    Best Coast – Happy
    Django Django – Default
    Good Morning Killer- The Shadowclub

  • Ever tried Japanese Pop-music?
it’s bouncy and fun – for starters try Chocolate Disco from Perfume (a female electro-pop trio with a distinct style both in music & fashion) or Voice from A.I. (she’s more from a R’nB background)
Also great: Sakanaktion and Boom Boom Satellites ~ almost all of their stuff is dancable and run-able

b/w I am 30 and discovered the fun and bounciness of J-Pop at 25 – bringing back memories from poppy-teenager years but with a certain twist

  • Snoop Dogg – Drop It Like It’s Hot ft. Pharrell Williams
    Kelis – Milkshake
    Kelis – Millionaire
    Beyonce – Crazy in love
    Amerie – One thing
Black eyed peas – My Humps
NERD – She wants to move

  • Alex – I just started getting into running and completely get where your coming from! Music is essential to the fun of running! It makes me feel super empowered in my body and generally powerful. I like to imagine my swinging arms are punching all the people I’m angry or annoyed with at the time, get all that frustration out and turn it into something positive.

I would have to say Gangnam Style is a must have and I’ve really been enjoying running to a few of the songs from the Kings of Leon album, Youth and Young Manhood – Red Morning Light, Happy Alone, California Waiting.

    Get CRAAAYZY girl! xxx

  • I started running with audiobooks and it’s totally new experience. I even run little further if it’s some intense part of a book.

  • After a dance party inducing set at Coachella, I’m all about Major Lazer. Their album “Guns Don’t Kill People..Lazers Do” would add a little Dancehall fun to your run.

  • I can only imagine by David Guetta, My Heart Skips a Beat by Olly Murs, Call 911 (Beataucue Remix) [JBAG Edit] by Florrie & Beataucue, Primadonna and How to Be a Heartbreaker by Marina & the Diamonds, Brooklyn We Go Hard by Jay-Z & Santogold, I Wish by Skee-Lo, OK by Inna, I’m in the House (ft. Zuper Blahq) by Steve Aoki… I love music if you can’t tell :) It’s hard to run without music, but I started without it because I was worried about cars where I live. So I’ve gotten used to running without music, and just my thoughts, the birds, and the cars ;)

  • shake appeal- the stooges !!!!!

  • No more michael jackson – Teddybears. It’s great, enjoy the running!

  • I just came back from running and thought i could share my favourite song for doing it, it’s Never Stop (rap version) by Chilly Gonzales. When i start feeling really tired it gives me the energy i need, it’s pure magic!

  • I am a huge runner and I love to mix it up with some pick-up songs and some just great listening for longer runs…..Talking Heads (especially Heaven), anything by Snow Patrol (not so much for pump-up, but pretty excellent), Griffin House, Bryan Ferry and/or Roxy Music. Also a great song by A Fine Frenzy…Now is the Start.
