Ahhhh the bun!!

As you know, in my past hair life I was totally a top knot girl. But there is something about the low chignon that I also really love. It feels really soft and chic.
In my new cropped hair life, I’m trying to be bun free, but sometimes I really can’t resist….

How about you? Low knot or top knot?

  • Prefer the chic look of the low knot, but the top knot is definitely more flattering for my face!

  • I’ve always been a top knot girl when I had long hair, but since chopping my locks in November I’ve embraced the low bun as it was really my only option to pull my hair back when it was short.
I always think a top knot can look super chic, but a low bun can also look super refined and fancy.
Both are good for different outfits, occasions etc.
I’m trying to grow my hair out now and I think I’ll probably go back to a top knot.

  • Top knot is def easier to make look good but the other piton is more elegant.. anyhow, Dear Garance,
I have a qeustion fr you (maybe for a subsequent post): for a watch, what would you choose: leather or steel bracelet? What kind of brand? thankssss!

  • Depends on my mood. I have thick hair, so I usually knot it up or down when it’s a little dirty.

  • I am a topknot girl, myself. But I agree that a low chignon can look very chic and polished. I think it depends on the outfit, occasion, etc.

  • Definitely top knot.
No matter how they cut my hair, I always find a way to have my top knot bun and I kinda like the way it makes me feel like a model off duty haha

I prefer the low knot. As you say, it’s more elegant/chic. On the other hand, the other one it’s becoming too usual and consequently too common.

  • wonderful picture

    Définitivement le haut!

  • Pauline June, 5 2013, 10:03 / Reply

  • When you put both of these together, (presented so well I must say) I can visually feel the top knot is dated and the low knot is more contemporary. I used to be a top-knot too, but now with my bobbed hair… well its just a bob.

    PS : j’adore ta nouvelle coupe !

  • I do both but I do have a soft spot for the high bun. it’s very ballerina like.

on her low one all my life, but it depends on your face on your hair etc…

  • louise June, 5 2013, 10:14 / Reply

Have always loved a low knot; think it is the more feminine.of the two, although, in this photo, tied with fine hair, for the model’s hair type, believe she looks best in the top knot because it looks fuller.
But for medium/thick hair, I definitely favor a low knot.

  • Haut!

  • The LOW knot absolutely! The top knot is only for ballet dancers, kids, and school teachers. It just looks silly I think. A really loose one looks good if you are old. Katherine Hepburn style. But otherwise its the low one.

  • roelien June, 5 2013, 10:26 / Reply

it rather depends on the hair, the face, how it’s done, the total look… but isn’t that usually the case wih this-or-that diemma’s?

  • The bun! I like it. I wear it. I loved it on you!

  • I love both but I’m not able to make it good!
After one minute everything is shatter!!! :(

Low bun!! For those of us with long, fine hair, it can be really hard to get the perfect, messy, cute top-knot… it ends up looking tight and severe on the sides, and tiny and silly on the top-knot! I always feel a bit self-conscious that I have to stick to the low bun, but maybe I need to just embrace it :) I also like doing a little fake chignon with a clip, which looks both elegant, and has a cute top-knot at the top!

  • Topknots have become ubiquitous and a little tiresome, for me. The chignon (classic, beautiful, and unassuming) is where it’s at.

  • I do like both. I think the top one is good for leather jackets and if you wanna look like more cool. If you wanna look very elegant and feminine, the lower one is great.

But you know, a hot leather jacket and a gorgeous skirt with a cropped top can look reaaally good with a low chignon!! Sweet feminine and sexy at the same time!!

I think not everybody,s face is shaped for a low chignon, but everybody can wear a top knot!!

  • princessglee June, 5 2013, 10:44 / Reply

When my hair is completely uncooperative then its a high bun. When its doing somewhat of what I want it to then its a low chignon.

  • Haut toujours!

  • I’d go for the top knot though both are amazing! xoxo

  • The top knot is the perfect effortless hairstyle, however the low chignon is pure elegance. It can be paired with a simple white shirts and boyfriend jeans, a smart blazer or a beautiful cocktail dress. It really is a great hairstyle for any occasion that adds a little style to any outfit.

  • Alicja June, 5 2013, 10:53 / Reply

  • Love a knot! I wear them all of the time BUT…and this is important! You should change the position of your knot around your head. The tension and the weight of the hair can cause it to fall out if you wear it the same way every day. So wear it high, wear it low, wear it to the side….
    Cassie http://www.itsmecassie.com/

  • Me, I’d say top knot! It reminds me of ballerinas, it is very delicate and feminine!

  • Exactly. Top knots look better with my face shape but I think the ballerina influence is there too.
Plus my hair is often in braids and the top knot is easier. I also think the low knot makes me look slightly older.

  • Melissa June, 5 2013, 11:44 / Reply

I definitely think that it all depends on the shape of your face. I have a longer face, so the low knot looks better on me. But women with smaller, rounder faces look great with a top knot. It’s definitely a science!

  • top knot is more sporty and low knot more dressy…
    http://www.theflaneuse.com

  • I love both kinds of knots! However, I usually wear a top knot because helps me to refine my face that is quite round!
    http://heelsandpeplum.wordpress.com/

    http://www.laurablogmode.com

  • I’ve always been a low-bunner, myself. I have dabbled in top-bunning, but it looks odd on me, with my hair all pulled back like that– I have a round face, so it’s not so flattering. I think the flattery of the low-bun is two-fold: (1) it appears more formal, whereas the top-bun appears rather casual; and (2) the long bangs/ front layers of hair can be swept sideways, framing the face more (which is better for my face shape). Ah, the anatomy of the humble bun!

I don’t have hair, well not enough to put up or down, but I always prefer the low bun. I love the way it frames a woman’s face delicately from behind, lending a flowing softness and ease. Classic.

  • Entre les deux donc au centre ! :)

  • I like the top one but I’m also not sure I do it right *sigh*

    http://www.timelessdifference.com

  • I like both but my favorite is the top knot like a danseuse. I do this to my little girl every time she goes to ballet. Really nice. The other version, in my opinion, is sporty and casual but not so “glamorous”.

  • Love the top knot look but my bun doesn’t like to stay up the whole day. So by the end of the day, it becomes a low knot. Best of both worlds. =)

  • I love my low knot!!! I am a low knot girl on my bad hair days, but even on the good ones. The top knot is cool as well, but I’m just not the type for it.

  • Low bun!! I ride pretty much every day and this is perfect under a helmet. Mine gets super messy. I do a high one for ballet or yoga.

  • Tous les deux!

  • Definitely a topknot girl but there is something so classically appealing about the low bun. I would do the low bun but haven’t figured out a way to make it look awesome on me. :P

I’ve done both, and prefer the top knot, as it’s more suitable for
    (1) my strong jawline and wide-set cheek bones
    (2) driving – I can lean my head back on the headrest without feeling like my hair is scrunched into the nape of my neck
    (3) when I want to take a quick nap while waiting at any place… I just lean back, doze off, wake up and don’t have to tidy my hair
    (4) when I have to jump out of my car (where I’ve been leaning my head back on the head-rest) and run straight in for my kung fu session (where I get so sweaty that my neck likes nothing against it)
    (5) yoga, when I have to lie on the floor and it’s infinitely more comfortable than having a low knot clustered at your neck
    (6) summer, when I like feeling the breeze – and not strands of hair – around my neck
    (7) winter, when I wrap and unwrap scarves around my neck all day.

Top knots are super-practical and mega-comfortable… and, they make me look more like a school-teacher, which I hope lends me an aura of fierceness!

Since I’ve been growing my hair back…and, getting rid of bangs (started only 3 months ago or so), regardless how chick bangs look on Zoe de Chanel and Milla Jovovich (love her latest Instagram shots from Venice)…And, I live in very humid and hot climate now..so, the verdict is: TOP BUN.
I also feel it gives my face more oval shape, rather than round.

  • Honestly, I’d say middle. Less hassle and more comfort.
But seriously, everything looks nice when you’re beautiful (fact).

  • Both! And it also totally depends on my mood – if I’m more hyper, I’ll definitely wear top knot, and if I feel more glamourous I’ll go for low one :).

  • It really depends on the shape of the scull. If you have a very round head (like so round, that it almost looks flat) and not a prolonged shape in the back that you have to do the top-knot, no way around it.

  • When I look at this I think it must be the high knot as it draws the eye up and with that the jaw line. This is important to a 50 year old. On the other hand, i am drawn to the low knot from a style point of view as it is more sophisticated – the high bun looks more ‘I am just going to the gym’ to me, and the low bun ‘low maintenance, high style’.

  • Sheila June, 7 2013, 10:44 / Reply

Both works very well for me. I’d pick the top knot for a natural and casual day look and the low one for an effortlessly chic evening look

  • Top knots are for when I need to get down to business and I need no hair distractions. Low buns are for lazy days when I don’t want to straighten my hair.

  • Marketa June, 7 2013, 12:37 / Reply

Love them both. Would you be able to show us how to master the art of making a chignon? My hair is just about long enough to try it. The low one is soooo elegant. Merci!

  • Personally, I love both. But I think the top knot trend is on it’s way out, and it’s all about the low chignon.

  • Haut.
