The new beauty look…
Usually when the look at a show is “no makeup” that means some concealer, a little powder, nothing too heavy to create an au naturel look, but at Alexander Wang there was actually no makeup. Zero. Nada. Zip. It was a pretty badass move if you ask me, because it’s pretty rare that models hit the catwalk totally barefaced.
Then yesterday at The Row, Odile Gilbert embraced the natural textures of models hair and instead focused on conditioning the hair to keep it healthy. Outside of a middle part, the locks were totally natural.
This got me thinking (watch out!) about beauty during fashion week. It’s rare that models are really showing their own identity on the runway, and I feel like it might be the start of a new trend. You aren’t distracted by a bold lip or wet hair, you really see the girls and even more so, you really see the clothes.

C’est intéressant, effectivement,de chercher la beauté du matin au réveil… Par contre,ce serait pas mal si quelques créateurs s’occupaient de la beauté du corps, parce que au niveau du poids des mannequins ça ne s’améliore pas (et moi parfois ça me choque de voir des cotes et des hanches…)

Je suis un peu interloquée de voir que ces mannequins se ressemblent toutes , seule Jourdan sort du lot. Là encore se pose la question de la couleur… Mais ce n’est pas le sujet!
Le naturel crée une atmosphère autour d’une personne : le charisme en ressort beaucoup plus. Puis une femme est beaucoup plus belle au naturel. Après dans l’univers de la mode/beauté, je ne suis pas sure que ce soit une bonne idée, le vêtement ressort mais n’est-ce pas un tout que l’on doit présenter (Coiffure,Maquillage,Vêtement) lors d’un défilé ?

I “experimented” all summer with the no makeup look! Unfortunately, at my lovely and grateful 53 years, I do feel best with a hint of foundation/concealer, blush and Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner! (I am as big a Bobbi Brown Cosmetics lover as you will ever find!)
I do love minimal, natural looking makeup. I love to see lovely, young women with no (or almost no!) makeup on. It is beautiful!

I totally agree. I love this trend. I am 43 and prefer only a touch of mascara, concealer if I have a blemish but otherwise no makeup and no hair colour. Although makeup can be fun, we way underrate natural beauty in North America. Simple and natural shows the unique beauty of the person and as someone noted above it’s great to see that models are also imperfect!

Not every day, but sometimes I am like “come on, I was born with this face. I am comfortable in my own skin”. And sometimes I wanna hide myself.
It depends…. Sometimes I am with a make up too. But.. More often only with. If I was a younger.. Be without make up was so normal. Now no.. xa

Well, it might be a good idea to show models the way they are… but (there’s a but), won’t the different looks attract attention and so distract from the clothes? Isn’t the point of the shows to focus on clothes and try to present an image without caring about individual personalities?
On the other side, it would be great to show girls that are not ‘perfect’, just themselves (with great clothes).
I can’t really decide…

I really like this trend, I actually think it helps letting out the models’ personnality as they’re not hidden behind a common theme. And just like you, I’m thinking about the notion of beauty in fashion and it’s making me quite sad to see that even in 2013, there are really few black models on the runways… I mean, NY is so cosmopolitan and we barely see 2 or 3 african-american or asian models per show, am I the only one who thinks this is a problem ?

Sure, the no-makeup look is great. I never wear makeup during the day and I like the idea that if a bare face becomes an acceptable look, we won’t be getting any more of these ridiculous “Oh NO! I had to go a day without makeup and everyone thought I was a zombie with consumption” articles in magazines. That said, I find it kind of disgusting that Jourdan Dunn is the only model of color in this entire lineup. Seriously?! I hope this is not the entire roster, otherwise I’ll be pretty damn disappointed in Alexander Wang.
This is how I look almost everyday. I love it. It’s so easy and comfortable. I used to think, when I was struggling with make-up and hair, if men can be natural then so can I! But I always have the choice to dress up if/when I want to which makes it extra special.
I love the idea of not having any makeup! It should be about the clothes! I think the hair should be up in a bun too, to not distract from the clothes. Anyways, models are beautiful with or without makeup.

So refreshing and beautiful! I’ve always felt that a bare face makes a woman most gorgeous because it shows her true self and also makes her look fragile in a way. And I simply like this natural look…. Just because. x

mais, (toujours un mais) un peu d’anti-cernes parfois c’est mieux, un bouton caché c’est quant même mieux…
J’aime car on voit les vraies personnes, les nuances, les subtilités. J’ai arrêté le maquillage bien après avoir arrêté la cigarette, et ça m’a fait bizarre au début, je me sentais toute nue. Mais je me sens tellement libre et vraie sans fard ! Ca m’a forcé à m’assumer telle que je suis. Et puis j’ai une belle masse de cheveux bouclés autour, ca habille aussi.

Seems a bit like the emperor’s new clothes – hire pricey hairdressers and makeup artists then go for a “natural” look. It may work for teens and young ’20 somethings, but over 25, we can all benefit from some subtle enhancement!

Très bonne idée! Peut être qu’à force de voir des filles naturelles, “on” acceptera qu’une cerne, un bouton, une petite veine…font parti de la vie et cela n’empêchera pas de trouver une femme belle! L’idée du zéro défaut ne s’imposera plus…
En marge cela me fait penser à une conversation entre frangines sur LA beauté et notre père qui est intervenu disant qu’il ne comprenait pas, qu’à son époque, chacun trouvait une femme belle ou non, mais sans référence au poids, taille de jambe, maquillage etc. elle plaisait ou non, selon les gouts de chacun mais sans autant de diktat qu’aujourd’hui…donc peut être qu’en revenant à plus de naturel, l’exigence (très uniforme) qu’on s’impose serait moins forte…(qui de la poule ou l’oeuf).
J’adore le look complètement naturel, on voit vraiment la personnalité des mannequins et surtout les vêtements mis en valeur!

That the models were wearing zero make up might be a statement, “Show who you really are” “Be yourself” or it might be the matching thing to his logos… “Make a statement” or the complete opposit… a balance to the “in your face logos” … although not all the logos were “in your face” (I loved those subtle ones!) Personally I really only realized the “No Make up” after looking at the collection for the second time and I was actually wondering if there really is no make up at all, now I know. Thanks Alex. xxx

Génial si on a une peau superbe et 20 ans! Après, je pense qu’un peu de crème teintée pour unifier le teint et du mascara , c’est mieux surtout à partir de 40 ans!
Ça me fait me sentir encore plus mal, au moins quand elles sont maquillées je peux me dire “mouais c’est facile avec les plus grand maquilleurs et les plus grands coiffeurs”. Alors que là plus aucun doute possible, ces filles sont incroyablement belles…
Plus sérieusement, j’adore le côté pas maquillé, naturel, presque un peu mauvaise mine, ça me fait penser à une double page Céline que j’ai vu dans le dernier vogue.

Fan fan fan ! Déjà ça fait du bien de voir que niveau visage, elles sont loin d’être parfaite, ça rassure, tout ça tout ça, et puis surtout, on retrouve la notion de mannequin-porte manteau et je trouve ça plutôt intéressant. Leur minceur retrouve une justification dans ce sens là ! Associé à l’inverse (pour d’autres marques), ça pourrait aussi être intéressant, du genre fille maquillée à personnalité et à corps pas stéréotypé voire monotypé.

Comme quoi la beauté ne rime pas forcément avec le make-up. Il a sûrement voulu montré un autre côté esthétique du défilé.

Je suis tout à faire d’accord avec ce qu’Alexander Wang à fait pour son défilé. J’aimerai juste porter ma peau… mais j’ai tellement d’imperfection dû à l’acné. Je dois la couvrir avec un peu de fond de teint (je met que ça d’ailleurs et je retouche mes sourcils). Je vais bientôt voir un dermato… et je veux un jour porter juste ma peau quand je vais travailler ou/et va à l’école. Je réserverai le makeup que pour des soirées. La femme n’a pas toujours envi de mettre du makeup tous les jours.
La tendance pour des jeunes filles de 20 ans? Tant mieux! Le naturel recherché en est-il un de la jeunesse éternelle?

The question is odd: what does one think of one’s real face? Shouldn’t we ask what we think of the loads of make-up women wear? Why cover a perfect, young skin with anything? So far I haven’t seen a foundation that looks natural on skin even in harsh daylight. And the older you get the more fake it looks as foundation makes the skin unnaturally even. Real skin, as is ages, becomes uneven. Old skin covered in makeup looks, um, pathetic.
Likewise, why colour gray hair? Coloured hair coupled with an ageing face fools nobody and, again, looks fake.
I am not against make-up nor highlights, I’m for enhancing one’s natural beauty at any age. However, the huge “beauty” industry has duped us into buying into the idealised, unnatural look we see in the media. The increasingly common botoxed and lifted faces are the end result of the manipulation we experience as women.

Ca me rappelle cette campagne de pub qu’il y a en ce moment à la TV pour une crème de beauté : “Oseriez-vous sortir la peau nue?”, à chaque fois je pense “bah oui, c’est ce que je fais tous les jours” et je rigole toute seule. Bon, cela dit, ça ne veut pas dire que j’ai une peau parfaite, et puis je ne suis pas mannequin (mon Dieu non) donc ce n’est pas la même chose. Mais je suis totalement pour le “au naturel”, c’est rafraîchissant dans cette fashion industry toujours sous contrôle…

Hello, je trouve l’idée plutôt sympa d’un retour au naturel mais comme je l’ai lu dans d’autres coms on a tendance à trouver que ces jeunes femmes ont des têtes bizarres, personnellement j’y ai réfléchi quelques instants pour réaliser que ce que moi je trouve étrange ce sont les proportions de leurs visages très minces, qui restent très éloignés de la majorité des visages croisés dans la rue, en tous cas en France… je sais que cela peut sembler être un autre débat mais je pense qu’ils se rejoignent assez vite! Comme quoi personne n’est parfait! (je sais c’est facile mais ca me fait plaisir de l’écrire ; )).

I really like this new trend. I am always bareface and only starting from last year I started putting on some tinted sunscreen or a dash of face powder with SPF35+, and drawing a bit of my brows (cuz the original colour is too light comparing to my black hair). I would conceal some reddness or acne marks if I really need to be “makeup” for some special occasions. (btw I am turning 28 this December, and it’s kinda hard for me to survive in my culture for not doing proper makeup. Yes, Asian people are crazy and addicted when it comes to cosmetics :P)
To me these are already makeup, I feel great when I can stil see my own skin and a bit of those imperfection after “makeip”, which I can have a sense of self. I admire people who spend a lot of time on makeup and cosmetic, which can be a form of art. But that’s just not my style.
I like it and I like what he’s saying, but let’s be real – a little BB cream and a few swishes of mascara take all of 30 seconds and make every single human on the planet look better.
Ouiii, enfin !!! Mais par contre, pourquoi oh grand pourquoi elles font tout le temps la gueule!! Une femme qui sourit et en plus au naturel c’est la plus belle femme du monde. Sur les podiums c’est pareil, la gueule, la gueule, bon dieu mais soyez heureuse de la vie !!
Bon on va dire aussi que la photo d’identité est l’épreuve la plus dure pour une fille, trop loin, trop près, la lumière…^^
Pour le naturel ça me rappelle qu’en en déc 2008 je décide d’arrêter la coloration (j’en faisais depuis la 3ème), peu à peu j’ai retrouvé ma couleur naturelle. Après quelques années et différentes coupes de cheveux impressionnant comment ils brillent, ont l’air plus sain.
Hélas, j’ai recraqué en mai 2013 (29ans maintenant^^) et je m’en mords les doigts… Plus qu’à attendre encore et comme ils sont longs dur l’effet racine (bon la couleur est quand même plus subtile que ce que je faisais en période ado). Bref tout ça pour dire que quand je vois les gamines avec leur cheveux au naturel, j’ai envie de leur dire “résistez à toutes ces cochonneries, le naturel c’est le plus beau” et souriez à la vie!
I think the trend is great, but looking at this picture just makes me sad because Jourdan is the only woman (out of so many!) with darker skin. For me, the innovation is overshadowed by the archaic casting. :(

I’m 30…no 31! And I find that there’s no way to look younger as you get older. However, you can always look fresh! The more makeup I wear the older and dingier I look.
My go to look is clean looking skin using Nars Tinted Mois. a bit of dark powder on the brows and touch of Red Square on the cheeks and eyelids.
I love this, but find it totally surreal that wearing no makeup qualifies as a “look.” Sometimes fashion turns the world upside down, then turns it right-side-up again and asks you to applaud.

Watch out, Alex and designers! That’s a ton of money (billions) spent all the time because cosmetics people make you feel you need a lot of junk for your face.
I’ve always preferred good skincare to makeup. My everyday cosmetics can work as a makeup too (face cream with a matting effect, eye cream with some concealing features).

Mouais. Sur ces jeunes femmes, très bien ! A 37 ans, au naturel, moi j’ai l’air un peu fatiguée. Même le dimanche je mets une lichette de mascara, mais je m’arrête là ! Mais le naturel, j’en ai bien profité avant 25 ans ! ;-)
Je ne suis pas fan personnellement ! selon moi le créateur est sensé nous proposer un style, un look, qui passe aussi bien dans les vêtements que dans le make-up.
Meme si je le sais, le naturel qui parait une négligence au premier abord, n’est qu’un travail longuement pensé ! je n’en demeure pas fan du tout !

It should always be a women’s right to be without makeup, always feel comfortable and never be judged. But after years of “glow” and “smoky eyes” and “berry touched lips”…it is hard to see these pictures and feel as though these women don’t look a little under the weather. It’s become a societal norm and a difficult one to erase from our brains.
