A couple of weeks ago we had the pleasure of having Mariel Hemingway share her thoughts on the ever-changing beauty of life. For a woman with so much wisdom, insight, style, and grace, one story with one photo just wasn’t enough. Today we’re back with more Mariel, this time, getting an intimate look at everything that influences her personal style.

Mariel lives in the hills of Calabasas on a sprawling plot of land filled with a tee-pee, a trampoline, enough workout equipment (her husband’s mostly) to fill 3 gyms, as well as 2 cats, 3 dogs, 13 chickens, 2 roosters and hundreds of hummingbirds. Not to mention the ice plunge being installed. If it sounds a bit like an adult playground you wouldn’t be far off.

It’s no surprise then that her style is a direct reflection of her life there. Casual and effortless…

How would you describe your approach to style?
I like pieces that are comfortable and easy… I am not a style maven but I like to look clean and unencumbered, stylish without effort.

Classic, clean, simple

Since living on your ranch in the secluded hills of CA , how has your wardrobe been influenced?
Getting out of clothes that can jump on the trampoline or feed chickens is sometimes a challenge but it is nice to dress a little to go into town… usually jeans and a tee shirt but the fact that I am out of shorts or leggings is a positive.

Do you have a go-to look or something equivalent to your “personal uniform” ?
I am very into navy pants (jeans or slacks) and crew neck tee shirts in either gray or white.

As an actress and author, you’ve been part of just about every aspect of the fashion industry (from red carpet to magazine shoots). How has it influenced your personal style?
I don’t believe the glamour of the industry really affects my personal style… I have never been one to go to red carpets often… when I do it is a big event for me… I stay within things that are comfortable for me… navy, white, black… hmmmm…. I guess that does influence my personal life now that I say it.

Would you say you have Californian style?
It feels like its influenced with a sense of ease and practicality. In spite of not wanting to be pigeon holed to having particular style, yes I do have a California / Idaho style… easy and practical.

You have a huge capacity for laughter and a joyous energy. Do you find that translates over into how you get dressed each day?
Gosh I hope it doesn’t mean I choose funny clothes but I suppose it means I want to feel free in my style choices.

Do you have a fashion icon?
My daughter Dree Hemingway has become my fashion icon… she has amazing style and taste. My daughter Langley too but hers is unique to her and very specific where as I can imagine Dree’s style being my own. They are both amazing!
