First, take a good look at that picture…
Ok, done? So… A couple days before fashion week, Alex and I found ourselves at Zara.
I wanted to check the new arrivals of course, but I also was ready to impress Alex with the depths of my ancestral Zience (years of experience make all the difference!)(???).
So of course, we turn straight to the left to go to the “collaborations” racks (that’s what we call them) and there, I see this biker jacket.
It was my time to shine…
I knew Alex was looking for a biker jacket, and this one was perfect, perfect cut, perfect leather, all right, all right, so the hardware was not entirely luxe, fine I’ll give that to you.
I have her try it, faint, it’s so beautiful (I keep half an eye opened to see her reaction though), have her touch the leather, make her turn in the mirror to see how flattering the cut is, and tell her that, there, no need to look further, the Zargrail (if you rememeber my piece about how to shop at Zara…) is here, right in front of her.
That’s when I decide to look at the price. $120.
Wait, what?
Ahhh no this is impossible. No, but look at this leather it’s too nice, it is not possible. There must be a tag error. Let’s buy all the stock and resell them on eBay and then we can go on vacation in the Caribbean, just you and I.
Still, I look at the composition.
No sign of leather.
No way.
The jacket is faux, and I’ve been racing about the beauty of the leather for 20 min. Shame.
Alex stays nice and doesn’t even raise an eyebrow. I (slightly) want to go burry myself under a pile of Trafaluc (that should indicate the depth of my shame).
I change subject and take her to go check the real leather jacket to see if we can find anything better but no real leather, at Zara, is better than the faux. And they’re all much more expensive, obviously.
I eat up my pride, and tell her to buy it. Yes it’s faux, but it’s still beautiful. And if she decides she doesn’t like it, she can bring it back.

One month later, I can proudly report that Alex has been wearing the jacket like it’s her best friend and that the “leather” hasn’t changed, it has just taken a soft patina that doesn’t look bad at all. Pffffou, my honor is saved.
And now, tell me: did you guess it was faux leather ?

Je bosse pour en fabriquant de Simili cuir. De nos jours, on fabrique des Similis cuir qui ressemblent au vrai cuir.
After seeing your post yesterday and noticing that someone tagged the jacket as a Zara piece, I’ve been eagerly awaiting your follow-up. I have yet to wade into the waters that are Zara. I don’t have a store near me and every time I look at their things online and then I look at the “composition”, I think “no way…I know I’d be sending this back because it can’t look this nice in person.” Garance, I’m like you and a lot of your followers…I love the “real” stuff and the great names, but I also want to have things that I don’t have to baby. Looking forward to what everyone else has to say about Zara and not just Alex’s fab jacket.

J’ai aussi plein de compliment sur ma vrais veste, en faux cuir, que tout le mode prend pour du vrais cuir, de chez Zara…
Karl avait toute une théorie dans les année 90 sur la fausse fourrure, qui était mieux que la vrais… et un jour une journaliste lui a demandé pourquoi il était revenu à la vrais fourrure, sa réponse… Il n’y a que les imbéciles qui ne changent pas d’avis.
Alors tant qu’on a du plaisir il faut en profité!
While I still choose to wear leather (and eat beef), I no longer buy real fur and applaud Zara (and Alex) for finding a kinder alternative that didn’t cost an animal it’s life. She saved an arm and a leg, both literally and figuratively, while still getting great style and quality. Well done (no pun intended!).

Au jugé, comme ça, juste en observant la photo : no way. On n’y voit que du feu. Mais en touchant, je ne sais pas… Si tu as eu le sentiment de toucher un cuir de qualité, sans doute l’imitation est-elle très réussie. Auquel cas, c’est parfait : aucun animal n’aura souffert dans le processus de création de la pièce.

It annoys me SO MUCH that Zara is lowering the quality of its materials. I suppose that most people don’t mind. For example, all shoes’ lining is now non leather. It’s a pity because I love this shoe collection….
Don’t understand me wrong but I really feel like 120USD for a “faux” leather is quite of a robbery. For this price you can find very nice real leather jacket, with a beautiful cut.

I totally agree, this is ridiculous, so expensive for something fake! I buy Zara since forever, and I have a beautiful leather jacket I got in Spain 1 year and a half ago, still perfect condition, and everyone asks me where it is from, for 70 dollars. And is real leather, and it looks as great as this one from the picture. Zara is getting a little insane with their prices, and indeed, I find it very hard to find a good quality piece nowadays. Everything is polyester, and you have to leave your wallet to pay for a silk piece (which is so rare to find now!).
Jacket looks terrific, and that it’s faux makes it even better – just ask Stella McCartney!

Yes! And plastic leather tends to break after some use. Usually after 1 or 2 years. That is throw away fashion. Wear it some time, get tired of it and then throw it away. I recommend spraying some water spray with glycerin in it from time to time onto the jacket. To maintain the fabric softeners.

I could not tell at all! My favorite leather jacket is faux as well, but I haven’t been able to find a cut that I like better in genuine. I say, nice choice!

Je vais être sincère… j’ai su quand je l’ai vu. Tout de suite, j’ai vu que c’était du faux-cuir, du 100% polyuréthane quelque chose comme ça. Cette matière que je traque, même à 120€, je suis méfiante. Ma mère m’a toujours appris à regarder les matières, elle est obsédée par les matières même. Je le suis devenue à mon tour… Dès qu’une pièce me plait, je regarde l’étiquette. Je suis malheureusement souvent déçue, mais j’ai aussi réussi à dénicher des beautés en soie et cachemire à -70%. Cette veste est très jolie, je le reconnais, moi aussi j’ai louché dessus. Et puis dans ma tête, il y avait cette voix dans ma tête, celle de ma mère… et j’ai pas pu!!

Je vais être honnête, j’ai regardé la photo et j’ai pensé “ugh il est moche ce perfecto : pas de finitions, il fait cheap”. et bien oui c’est du Zara. Pour moi, on voit clairement sur la photo que ce n’est pas un beau vêtement, le cuir est trop plissé, et regarde l’ourlet en bas comme il est inégal…non non c’est comme voir de loin une chemise Zara en “soie” et s’apercevoir en la prenant que ça brille et qu’on a l’impression de toucher du plastique.

I have a faux leather jacket from TARGET that I have worn for years! Nobody can tell that it is faux. I even had a reporter at Lincoln Center during New York Fashion Week ask me about it. She couldn’t even tell. It is starting to show some wear, but I only paid $40 for it. And it is is machine washable, so I’ve never had to pay for dry cleaning. So, I say if you find a nice “faux”, go for it!

To be honest… I could tell from the grain (is that the right word? The structure of the leather) it’s faux. And I agree with Sand, quite pricey for a faux-leather jacket…
Personally I prefer real leather over faux, simply because it looks better when ages and it’s more breathable (which I think is a pro for shoes). It’s also easier to take care of and will last way longer.

I have to admit… I struggled with this when I first saw it in Zara a few weeks ago… as ‘real’ as it looks.. it is ‘faux’ and I have never done ‘faux’ before… so i struggled….. in the end I bought it…. (you can see it here http://www.myclayexperience.com/2013/09/just-touch.html ) I have to admit I ended up giving it away… and replacing it with a lovely real one…… but no, you could NOT tell it was faux leather… even the weight is heavy like real leather….. however it will not wear as well…. and as time goes on it will peel I’m sure.

No, I couldn’t tell, not from a picture anyway and if you couldn’t by touching it, I guess I would not be any better. I guess the only way to actually realize that it is faux leather, is by smelling, the smell of leather can’t be imitated!
Obviously there are quite good faux leathers on the market. Stella Mc Cartney has so many wonderful pieces in faux leather! Well no! I’m not comparing her with Zara! No, I would never do that, but I’m just saying, that there are good faux leathers we can buy…. and no…. I’m not a Vegan….. xxx

It looks great, but my problem with it isn’t that it’s not real leather. It’s Zara’s appalling labor practices. OK, I know I sound like a scold. But here’s the thing: Because of the labor issue, I decided to stop shopping at Zara cold turkey, and it’s killing me, because I -love- what the things they make. Still…the more I think about the crap labor conditions in other countries, the more I think, “I can live without that $20 T-shirt.” Or…sadly…that fantastic $120 faux-leather jacket.
Really not trying to rain on anyone’s parade. I just see these things, and I want them so badly, and I can actually afford them, and yet…
I did guess. In fact, I knew right away. But this is only because I had the exact same experience myself a few weeks ago. I loved it and thought I had finally found The One, but when I saw the label I knew it wasn’t for me. Yeah, I’m sure it will wear fine for a few years, and if that’s all you need then that’s great. For a more trend-driven piece I’d be ok with it. But for a classic motorcycle jacket like this I think you want it to last forever, to get better with time and become a part of you. Me, I’m saving up for one from BLK DNM.

I could tell by the stitching, fake leather may be less flexible to the needle, the seams look harsher, I guess. But it’s a great jacket, anyway.
Je trouve franchement choquant de payer 120$ une veste en PLASTIQUE dans ce genre d’enseigne. Un peu comme les pulls 100% viscose que l’on ose vendre 95 euros chez certaines marques “milieu de gamme” comme The Kooples, de qui se moque-t-on ? Mettre le prix pour payer une marque de luxe, aux finitions parfaites, ok. Mettre le prix pour payer un vêtements sans “grande” marque et produit en masse, mais coupé dans de belles matières, ok.
Mais là on a ni l’un, ni l’autre, et je trouve que c’est honteux.

I have a real problem with vegan leather. To make the material, chemical is used. It is bad for environment at the factory level. Also, when you toss out a vegan leather item, it won’t rot well like leather would. Since a lot of cows and pigs are slaughtered for dietary reason, the hide would have to go somewhere. Why not use the hide to make garment?
I could tell the jacket is NOT leather. It is that obvious. It may be soft and has a perfect cut and shape but it won’t block out wind and cold like real leather would.
It’s sad that the leather jackets are so expensive today. 3 years ago I bought a real leather moto jacket make by Guess? at TJmaxx for $150+tax (not on sale). The leather is so thick and soft. Wearing it the cold never gets to me.
There’s no $150 leather jacket today unless it’s the cheap suede kind. The new jacket I just bought is $200. The leather is not bad to the touch but is thin and very light weight.
If you want to use eco reason to buy vegan, just think about what goes into the material and what does it do to water source near the factory. The one you don’t want, bury it in your backyard and see how long it’ll take to have the earth absorb the material.
Yes I firmly and absolutely vote against vegan leather. It’s not the money, it’s for the earth.

YES! In zara you totally can tell false from real. Firstly, because of the price, and then bc synthetic leather does not actually feels or weights like real leather. I check all inside tags for composition in Zara, specially nowadays when it seems like finding a 100% cotton shirt is an odyssey. I would buy it with pride as a synthetic leather jacket, no shame in that at all. Polyester or modal for cotton bother me much muuuuch more than synthetic for leather, because it’s closer to my skin (?). And then I can save money for a real leather one…in like ten thousand years :)

J’ai la MEEEEEEEME EXACTEMENT debut aout moi qui suis une junk de cuir, pas su rester insensible a la perfection de cette coupe, je l’ai acheté non sans culpabiliser au debut. Mais Il faut regarder le produit dans son integralité et pour son style, et il est juste canon!

Je l’a vue moi aussi chez Zara et de loin, j’ai cru que c’était du cuir mais en y regardant de plus près, j’ai tout de suite vue aux poignets et à la taille que c’était du simili, même très bien imité. Le vrai cuir est beaucoup plus épais aux extrémités puisqu’il est replié… Mais c’est pas grave, le principal est d’être heureux/se de son achat. Par contre, c’est vrai qu’on garde ce genre d’article moins longtemps mais pourquoi un DIY perfecto une fois que celui-ci sera usé? Il suffit de reprendre le même patron en décousant le tout :)

I bought a faux leather Jacket from Zara a month ago and had the same experience! It’s even stretched a little bit like I would expect leather to do. I love it and wear it all the time. The only shame is that I bought it small so that it was more fitted (plus I’m only 5′ so needed the sleeves a little shorter) and can only fit so many layers under it for winter :(
Perhaps if she kept herself at a distance, no one would detect…but up close, to the discerning eye and nose, it’s quite apparent. The hem gives it away and leather, well it smells like leather! I’m curious about the laundry instructions, can you wash it? I’ve noticed many faux leather items cannot be washed or dry cleaned but rather, ‘sponged’ down! Maybe if left long enough, it will smell like leather after all ;)

I’m so happy I decided to buy it some weeks ago! It feels so soft, I love it! I dont care that it is not leather, as long as I feel that it is a good material and not plastic… The only problem is that now I’m seeing it EVERYWERE! Everyone has it! but well, for 59.99€ (in Portugal) I cant complain… Knowing that you approve just makes me love it even more! ;)

Stella McCartney a vraiment démontré que l’on peut renoncer au cuir… et donner vie à une magnifique maroquinerie! Dont le succès commercial est évident tant elle est aujourd’hui copiée….
Alors je n’ai pas vu, ni touché ce perfecto.
Mais, je crois que rejeter d’emblée l’idée sous prétexte que ce n’est pas du vrai cuir… c’est vraiment une idée toute faite, franchement d’arrière garde (oui, cela m’énerve!)
Je trouve que quand on aime la mode, on doit avoir l’esprit ouvert!
PS: Si nous n’avions pas de “plastique” nous ne pourrions pas, par exemple, porter de collants autres qu’en laine. Les traitements et la teinture de certaines matières naturelles comme le coton, ou le cuir justement, peuvent être extrêmement polluants, l’élevage est hautement responsable de multiples émissions de méthane, la viscose est une fibre naturelle (à ne pas confondre avec le polyester)… Bref, les “belles matières” ne sont pas toujours celles auxquelles on pense spontanément!
Yes, sorry, it looks faux. The leather quality looks spongy (especially at the seams), so by this fact, you know it’s fake. But who cares…Alex is digging it.
I only noticed because I find that faux leather seems to pucker when it’s worn. However, it’s a nice piece and honestly who cares? It makes her happy and looks well designed…I say keep on keeping on ; )
I had the same reaction to this jacket!! But the only thing that upset me was the price tag. On the contrary, 120$ is not cheap if we consider that the jacket is essentially made of plastic. It costs companies nothing to make and they sell it with crazy mark-ups. I find it’s yet another sign of how disposable society has become.
Zara sometimes sell real leather jackets… But, if you want more classic pieces, made with finer textile, or real leather, head to Massimo Dutti. Prepare extra cash as it is more expensive than Zara.
I think that faux leather of good quality surpasses real leather in many ways. First, it’s cheaper. Second, you don’t have to worry too much about it, like, oh my god, no, I can’t scratch it, it was sooo expensive, real leather, blahblah. And third (and the most important), it’s animal-friendly. And no, I wouldn’t ever tell it was faux leather in the picture. It looks damn good.

j’avais repéré cette veste sur l’eshop, puis sur une blogueuse. Il a vraiment l’air d’être en vrai cuir, coupe parfaite…mais je ne l’ai pas acheté, barrière du “fake”, je me suis jurée de ne plus acheter de simili: quand il vieillit, la pellicule se décolle et le synthétique (support tissu) est visible, et ça fait vraiment cheap et trés négligé . Après, poubelle car c’est pas réparable, ça me donne mauvaise conscience…
Et là tu me le remets sous le nez, en plus porté par une fille superbe, c’est pas cool ça!
Ce perf est beau parce qu’il est super simple, ça fait plus clean, il va avec tout .
L’année dernière, the kooples avait sorti un perf, dans un cuir épais comme ça et granuleux . le cuir était très beau mais il y avait trop de détails, il était trop “daté”, c’était un mauvais investissement à long terme.

I saw this jacket in shop but I knew that this isn’t a real leather. Real leather smells good and is really havy. For me is too short, just like a blazer or something, definitely this isn’t a jacket at all.

Le prix de 120 $ n’est pas basé sur le fait du faux cuir, mais sur le fait que le blouson a été produit sous des conditions horribles qui resemblent à l’esclavage! Je n’achète plus chez ZARA (Inditex), car la chance que la personne qui a produit ces vêtements, est très malade à cause de ces conditions de travail est trop élevée… et il n’y a aucune transparence ladessus…

I know! I’ve seen that jacket! It’s lovely. I didn’t buy it though… I was afaid everyone would notice the fake leather. So silly, I know.

Alors écoute, oui moi aussi ça m’est arrivé de me planter royal, ne pas (plus!) savoir faire la différence entre le vrai et le faux (et pas seulement du cuir…). Mais si tu veux vraiment voir du cuir (du vrai!) chez Zara (et pas cher en plus!) viens voir les collections dans les boutiques Zara espagnoles…c’est à tomber par terre! Olé y Olé y Olé Zara…

Why do we all agree wearing fur is a no no, but when it comes to leather the whole thing changes?
I read your post about fur and you may think it’s ok to buy leather because it’s only a subproduct, but even when you buy a second hand leather jacket you’re increasing the leather demand.

Je l’ai acheté à ma fille de 2 ans et demi au rayon zara kids….et je me suis aussi posée la question tellement ça ressemblait à du cuir. Pareil que toi, ce n’est que le prix qui m’a fait douter.
En même temps à 120 $ le “vrai” cuir, je n’aimerais pas connaitre les conditions de vie, d’abattage, de dépeçage des animaux qui l’ont fourni. Ni les conditions de travail des ouvriers du tiers monde qui crèvent dans les tanneries … (soupir) Faut être un peu lucide !
C’est effectivement intéressant de se poser la question aujourd’hui, vu les progrès technique et l’utilisation que la mode en fait. Et Stella McC n’en utilise pas, ce qui ne nous empêche pas d’être en extase devant ses créations!
je ne suis pas experte… mais je suis très contente avec ma veste similaire en polyurethane chez Monoprix ;-)
Don’t think of it as faux leather, consider it, it’s own special material. I happen to love rubber and even some types of vinyl, even though they’re associated with cheap sex industry clothes. Done in a creative way they can be beautiful in their plasticity and rubberyness. The texture of rubber is marvellous and that scuba wetsuit material and clear plastic and raffia etc. We’re in the 21st Century – we should be embracing new materials.

it’s indeed fabulous! Is it still in stores? I’ve checked it a couple of days ago in Hungary, but unfortunately i couldn’t find it..although it’s maybe cuz it is not available here…
Zara clothes are fabulous. The last point I like to mention is that if you love the look and thing doesn’t fit well, take it to a tailor. Sometimes the tailoring cost more than the article but you look like a million bucks. Especially for their dresses without a waist that makes you look pregnant, or pants and leggings that flashes everyone….. A little nip and a little tuck with the tailor and oohs and ahhhs ensues.

I prefer faux leather thatn real leather for three obvious reasons:
1. It is cheaper
2. It is easier to take care
3. No animal is harmed
Wearing real leather jacket is like wearing fur to me, so I try avoiding it as much as I can.

Moi je pense également que je me serais fait avoir… Du moins sur la photo on dirait vraiment du vrai cuir, la veste est très jolie. Je cherche justement une veste en cuire “épaisse” donc qui sais, je me laisserai peut être tenter par celle-ci^^
