Have you ever had it happen where you’re about to walk into an interview with an audience and your boyfriend jeans lose a button? Not just any button, but THE MAIN button? And then without the button, the jeans don’t stay on your (slender) hips whatsoever?
And then you’re forced to discretely keep your jeans up by non-nonchalantly having your hands in your pockets at all times?
Even when you have to shake someone’s hand?
Yep. Don’t know about you, but that definitely has happened to this girl. I’m NEVER going to give your the url of the interview. NEVER EVER EVER.
I was thinking about that awesomely embarrassing episode yesterday, telling myself that really, if I were a normal civilized girl, I would always have a safety pin on hand.
Cause really, imagine. It happened to my boyfriend jeans, but what if it would have been my shirt that had exploded in action, exposing my (curvy) cleavage? You only think about this sort of thing when it’s too late.
Yes. I should always have a safety pin on hand, and on top of that, I should have…
A mirror. Have you ever had a super important meeting right after eating a salad? Or like, a salad with parsley? Or like, an arugula salad?
A pack of gum. Or a garlicky salad?
A back up pair of tights. Because it always happens when you’re running to a romantic rendezvous (or an interview for your dream job) that a nail ruins your tights. It’s proof that you should always have…
A nail file. No seriously. Have you ever had a nail break in the middle of an important meeting and then every time you run your hands through your hair to be the totally interested but still sexy girl, your nail gets stuck in your hair and you can’t take your hand out without grimacing and pulling out 12 hairs?
And here you are saying to yourself, “Wait! All you have to do is tie up those pesky hair! There you go! Voilà!”
Yeah… Except the problem is that you should never leave home without…
A hair tie. Never. And when I don’t have a hair tie and I need to put my hair up for some sudden reason (my nail broke / I randomly sart having the feeling my hair is greasy (the horror!) / the wind turned my hair into a bird’s nest…), it’s just the worst. I can’t think of anything else and I start asking every girl around me to help me out, and of course, they NEVER have one either. I end up putting my hair up with the first thing I can find. A pen. An office rubber band, the kind you know you’ll NEVER be able to get out without screaming. A trombone. A bread-stick. The grissini kind. (Yes, my friends, a BREADSTICK!).
Not having a hair tie is just the worst.
Wait wait, no actually, the worst of the worst is not having a Kleenex when you have a cold. And at an important interview again, of course, or it wouldn’t be funny. Sniffle discreetly. And see the way people look at you with a combination of pity and exasperation.
Wait wait, no no no, the worst of the worst of the worst is forgetting your iPhone, and I say iPhone intentionally as an iPhone is 1738263538 times as indispensable as a Blackberry.
Because forgetting your iPhone is not only not missing calls, but it’s also:
– Feeling totally naked because I don’t know what to do with my fingers. I get bored. I actually THINK about stuff, a thing I haven’t done for about three years (since i got my first iPhone).
– Being totally clueless on the streets New York. Yes hello Googlemaps? It’s Garance and I’m as lost in Dumbo, come find me!!!
– Have the stupidest look on you face when you get to a meeting. (“And the reservation is under what name?”) because you forgot the name of the person you’re meeting. Normally, I’d just take a quick glance at my iCal. Pffff. So dumb.
And there you go. I’ve gotta make myself a little survival kit to have on me at all times starting… well… starting whenever I think to put the thing together! Mouahahaha!

C’est bien beau tout ça, mais on se retrouve avec un sac énorme (pas très classe le sac trop rempli), dans lequel on ne trouve jamais rien, tiens, la lime a fait des trous dans le collant… et qui pèse une tonne (j’arrive en suant à mon rdv, j’ai mal à l’épaule et je m’énerve sur mon sac car je ne trouve pas : les clés, mon iPhone, mes sous… Pourtant tout cela est vrai.

Dans mon sac, j’ai toujours une paire de lunettes de soleil / une paire de lunettes de vue (au cas où je perdrais une lentille) / une boîte à lentilles / une lime à ongle / le nécessaire pour me refaire une beauté (miroir, crayon, rouge à lèvres, fond de teint, échantillon de parfum, élastique) /une mini trousse de secours (pansements et tout le tralala) / un petit plan de ma ville /une pharmacie de poche (avec doliprane et cie) / des mouchoirs, bref la totale, je suis parée à toute éventualité!
Mouais, sauf que le dernière, beh j’ai oublié mon sac… :)
Des kleenex… toujours ! Un baume pour les lèvres et une crème pour les mains, parce que quand ça commence à gratter/picoter/brûler, on ne pense plus qu’à ça.
Du coup quand je pars en réunion au boulot, j’emporte aussi un baume à lèvres et une crème pour les mains discrètement dans ma poche. Et bien sûr, j’oublie mes lunettes…

Garance, non surtout pas de lime à ongles dans le sac!!! C’est à cause de ça, que j’ai bousillé une paire de Wayfarer. Pour le reste, je rajouterais dans ta liste un échantillon de parfum au cas où on oublie de s’en pchitter le matin et bien évidemment des lunettes de soleil.

The safety pin… You have no idea how true it is to me!!
I broke the zip of my boot one day but realized it at work. Unfortunately I was meeting Tom and his family at a fancy restaurant in London. I had to tight my boot with a rafia string. And eventually forgot about it. Until I met with Tom and he told me: “You could have done the other one to make it similar at least!”
Definitely once in a life time. I am clearly keeping a collection of safety pins in my wallet now!
Otherwise, I also always have a little foldable toothbrush — In case of garlicky salad too ;)
And one last thing that has proven being extremely useful to me: A big statement earring pair, just in case of a last minute drink/dinner in a A-list place.

Eh oui, je ne porte plus du tout de bracelet au bras droit parce qu’il est occupé en permanence par trois gros élastiques marron (J’ai les cheveux épais et je casse un élastique par semaine un peu près). Toujours être préparer!

I agree with everything! Hair bands are a necessity! But I also have to add hairpins- because you never know when the wind will wreck havoc with your fringe! And I have a huge headband in case I pass a mirror and realise that I have to cover up.

This is why I carry a big tote bag in addition to my large handbag. I have items for all of the beauty disasters that befell me over the years for which I was unprepared, including makeup for a full face, for those times when I’ve run out of the house (pleased to be early) and discovered that I’d forgotten all or part of my usual makeup. I also have several first aid items. I don’t have a safety pin (I will put some in my bag today), but I do have a sewing kit.
I castigate myself for this — who wants to look like a pack horse? After all, NYC has Duane Reade stores all over the place. But what if my nail breaks in the elevator on my way to somplace important and I scratch myself and need a band-aid right there? Or I peek in the mirror and there’s a zit from Hell staring back at me? Or some poor woman in the ladies room has a crisis and needs lint remover pads or spot remover?

I think my Rosebud Salve (lip balm, moisturizer and topical ointment if necessary) has been the best thing I’ve ever owned in my purse. And business cards/contact cards because you never know when you’re going to meet someone!
And in case your English readers may be confused (or amazed! ), un “trombone” en français, is a “paperclip” in English. :) Which, by the way, when I used to work in an office, have definitely used to pin up my hair…unsuccessfully.

I was at the opera this weekend with my boyfriend’s mom, I sat down a bit too quickly (ungracefully) and my shoulder strap broke! Yes, if I was a put together, girly girl I would have had a safety pin too! That was the worst, I had to rip the other one, tuck the flailing straps into my bra, and then sit vcry, very straight and still for 3 hours.
Glasses, if I’m going out wearing contacts. Just in case my eyes complain.
Sunglasses. I quite often take with me both pairs (prescription and non-prescription)
Droid phone. (I know, such an infidel!) and ear buds.
Loose change or small bills for train fares.
A pen, though I seldom carry any paper to go with it.
Key-chain sized hand sanitizer. I prefer scented ones, like citrus or mint or something.
Lipstick du jour. Because apparently lipstick is a staple of my daily nutrition.
I guess if I’d turn my purses over now I’d drop about 1500 hair clips and ties that I don’t need since the bob incident. But I leave them in there anyway.
juste un petit tip : on peut checker ses dents dans la pomme à l’arrière de l’iphone, qui fait miroir (quand même plus discret que de se prendre en photo pour vérifier !). Sinon j’ai toujours tout le reste dans une pochette, oui… ça fait un peu dingo en fait.
C’est pour ca que les ceintures deviennent utiles :P

Sinon j’ai toujours osciller entre avoir un gros sac avec tout (médoc compris) et petite pochette avec juste carte d’identité, iphone et CB (et kleenex)…maintenant j’ai un bébé, alors les priorités changent: faut la couche de rechange, le jouet, le bavoir etc…

Ca fait quand même beaucoup de bien de te lire et ça permet de se sentir moins seule dans ces moments de solitude incroyable!!!! Moi, je suis la championne toute catégorie des bas filés, détruits, ..;troués au mieux. Et rien ne sert de se ballader avec plusieurs paires, je suis génétiquement consitutée pour les détruire…pas avec les dents, ni avec des poils acérés (je ne suis pas encore totalement mutée) mais avec une poisse qui me colle à la peau, plus que les collants ne le pourraient jamais!!!
Le pire souvenir? Avoir passé une journée entière avec ce bas filé à l’anglaise, derrière le mollet, et aucun client, aucune collègue pour me dire de faire quelque chose…
Et à vrai dire, le bas filé ça passe encore. En parlant de journée où tu ne te rends pas compte de l’horreur et de la honte de la situation…il y a les tâches d’amour, de bave blanchâtre laissée par mon petit bébé d’amour. Un câlin avant de partir, une semaine pour se remettre d’une journée de séminaire à présenter devant toute la boîte avec cette énorme tâche sur l’épaule, sur du noir T_T…
J’arrête là car j’ai la tête qui tourne avec une envie soudaine de s’enfouir dans un énorme coussin pour crier un bon coup!!! :-)
Mais grâce à toi, je ne me sens plus totalement seule :-)

Never leave home without double stick tape for it can save you in so many ways from keeping your clothes/straps where they are supposed to be to avoid embarrassing fashion disasters to actually keeping your slouchy above the knee boots above your knee simply apply tape to the inside of the top of the boot and stick it to the back of your leg and you are good to go! Double stick tape is a must!

Its funny that you mentioned the hair tie. I a couple weeks ago i was at university and i had my hair down, but the place got so hot (being in the Caribbean of course) that i needed to put my hair up.
I looked in my bag but couldn’t find any so I had to suffer through it. As soon as i got home I put hairties in my car and in several of my hand bags to make sure I never have to suffer through the heat again! :)

Et dès maintenant, un éventail, toujours, à parfumer avant de sortir.
Pour s’aérer un peu quand la rue pue, et aussi, en terrasse, pour mater sans en avoir l’air, ou camoufler le spot rouge sur le menton, mine de rien ! C’est ridicule hein ?
Désolée… mais ça marche aussi pour calmer les bébés des copines pourtant !!!

mieux que le chewing-gum: une petite bouteille d’huile essentielle à la menthe. 1 à 2 gouttes sur la langue = remède instant et long terme pour l’haleine et aussi pour aider à digirer les trucs difficiles à diriger selon chacun.
Always have floss (for when something gets stuck in between your pearly whites), a book/magazine/anything to read (for when you’re stuck and have nothing to do with your iPhone), a notebook (for when ideas sprout in your head out of nowhere), and last but not least, a lipstick (for when you meet someone worth putting some makeup on).
My new tights have a ladder which is just starting to creep below my knee and I have 1 hour left of work, so hoping it will hold! But why don’t I have any spare pairs.
Actually I know the answer, when I wear Wolford 60s they do not ladder, so I don’t have this issue. But I have just switched to 10 denier and I am laddering them every day, so therefore not buying Wolfords!

Pour ma part la base qui ne me quitte jamais (ou presque) : pinces plates à cheveux, rouge à lèvres ou baume, lingettes muji matifiantes et miroir dans la même petite pochette (comme ça on n’oublie rien) + efferalgan odis (ça te sauve la vie quand un mal de tête pointe son nez et que tu n’as pas d’eau sous la main) + des bonbons menthe + iPhone + lunettes de soleil + crème hydratante pour les mains + gel désinfectant mains + mouchoirs + stylo + carnet. Et quand j’ai un grand sac j’y ajoute 1L d’eau et une banane pour les petites faims ;-)
du déodorant et des chewing gums,on ne sait jamais!
C’est complètement fou ! Justement hier soir au ciné, l’élastique de ma robe bustier a claqué et je me suis retrouvé en soutif dans la salle (heureusement noire) et évidemment j’ai jamais d’épingle sur moi ! donc je suis rentrée en tenant ma robe dans le bus, pas du tout ridicule..
Un baume à lèvres, de la crème pour les mains (oui je me desséche très très vite lol), mon ipod, mon blackberry et ma carte de transports!
Yup, gum, hair tie, and kleenex….because important social events always have super yummy appetizers, which means awkwardly hiding/wiping my greasy/sticky hand when important people come up to me and I need to shake their hand…
I use the camera on the cellphone as mirror, so no emergency there.

Ce qui me manque souvent c’est le peigne pour remettre en ordre mes tifs , j’en mets un petit dans une de mes poches …. et je change de manteau… arrrrffff

Vraiment drôle !!! c’est tellement vrai ! je m’y reconnais !! C’est pour ça qu’aujourd’hui je ne sors jamais sans un chouchou en + que celui que j’ai déjà dans mes cheveux car il m’est déjà arrivé de casser celui que j’avais dans mes cheveux… et là une longue histoire de stress !!
Mon autre tic c’est de ne partir sans une trousse de maquillage minuscule express de secours, car ouai… là aussi j’ai déjà vécu des catastrophes !! Même si la plupart du temps j’en ai pas besoin le jour où ça arrive…on est fière d’y avoir pensé!
AAh et les chewing-gums – obligatoire si on mange à l’extérieur!!

Toujours de mouchoirs! Franchement je pense qu’il y a pas plus désagréable que de renifler, voire pire… Et ça pour toi et pour les autres!
Sinon un anticerne, un mini mascara, une mini glace, un baume à lèvre, un rouge à lèvre, un élastique, un gel main antiseptique et du coup une mini crème pour les mains, parce que ça assèche totalement le gel antiseptique, une mini lime à ongle et un échantillon de parfum.
Enfin pour avoir tout ça faut trouver les minis et c’est une recherche perpétuelle!!

As the type of girl who felt like this on what seemed like a daily basis, I finally stopped in Sephora one day in Manhattan and voila! Miracle! Ms. and Mrs. Miniemergency kit! I make sure to throw in a couple of hair ties to avoid that hideous rubberband situation and problem solved. Infinitely more chic and put together (ish, well at least I feel a little better). Now if only I could find a way to fit it into a tiny purse …

hahaha, that was so funny- and so true. i don’t know why i always forget a hair tie and tissue, but they are what i always so desperately need! recently, i’ve been in the habit of wearing (a skinny) hair tie on my wrist. i sort of blend it in (or not) with whatever wrist jewelry. may not sound so chic, but its sort of become my style! the only thing i never forget is a writing pad and pen. oh, yeah, and usually some sort of lip color. god forbid if i get caught with no lip color or gloss!
Blotting sheets because my forehead will look sooo shiny when I catch a glimpse of me in the mirror …and lip balm because my lips will feel flaky and the only lipstick in my bag ends up being matte…
Honest and true in a comical, yet not so funny until later sort of way. I will admit that I never have carried a mirror in my purse, and am guilty of the broken nail issue. I seem to always be in need of a safety pin, but have not forgotten my phone. Could we get away with a back up phone stashed into our lives? An extra pair of tights is quite genius, and after reading this article I will be making my emergency kit. After all what are these bags for that we invest so much into if they cannot rescue us in return. <3

Miroir = la base !!!
I keep my essentials in a little catch-all pouch in my purse, so when I change purses, I can just throw the catch-all in it without forgetting something. Such as… a little tube of L’Occitane hand creme, Kiehl’s Lip Balm, whatever lipstick I happen to like that day, Visine eyedrops, and black eyeliner and brow pencil – which are about an inch or so long because they are the ends of the pencils that are almost finished. Great for touch ups and fit in the pouch because they are small. You just never know who you are going to run into or where you might be going!
Oh, Garance – you are too funny! You neglected to mention, after careful inspection of your person, you walk into a job interview with your shirt inside-out! My family said I looked great and I took their word for it. Last time I do that, and no, I did not get the job….!

The best tip was from Lavang who said to keep everything together in a carry-all, as now I’ll have a use for all the gift-with-purchase bags I saved that are taking up space in a drawer (because they’re too pretty to throw out!).

You can get a screen protection sheet on your iPhone that’s reflective and acts as a mirror! I have it on mine and it works perfectly :) You can see the screen absolutely fine when the backlight is on, but when it’s off it’s a perfect mirror :)

When in need..
Matches can be used as nailfile in worst case. And with a knife you can
shape it into a toothpick. Oliveoil can be applied on lips and hands.
Just wipe off the excess with a tissue.
As for suddenly oily looking hair, I give it a stroke with my powder and brush.
Hair tie for sure! I carry those Vitamin C/electrolyte packets in case I feel a cold coming on, or get overheated/sweaty. Also I finally put a pair of tweezers in my car, because I am always finding some stray hair that apparently you can only see with the sunroof open.
Handcream, cuticle cream and lip balm. Also, tylenol (or advil) and Vit. C. A small bottle of water. A baggu – just in case.
But all this, seriously, is a LOT of stuff, don’t you think? So unavoidaly, the size of my handbag is always… pretty big. I remember Karl Lagerfeld once making the observation that he couldn’t understand why the handbags were getting bigger and bigger (something along the lines of “je trouve ca assez laid”). Bon. Clearly, he is not a woman. Because of this, I always carry either a small bag and another black bag (where I stuff all my essentials) or one pretty big bag.

From a lifetime of these mishaps, I carry a mesh (see through) Walker bag (you can get them at Ricky’s) filled with band aids (from when my daughter was little), moleskin (for shoes that rub), those little foot petals that you can cushion your sandals with when they start rubbing in the summer, safety pins, bobby pins, hair tie, mirror, lip balm, tissues, Advil, Tylenol, a mini lint brush, mini sewing kit, fashion tape in case of wardrobe malfunction, individual pads for stinky underarms if I get really hot & sweaty, individual sunscreen pads in the summer, mini toothpaste & brush, floss picks. You get the idea. Almost everything you would take for traveling. Actually, when I was doing a lot of traveling, that is when I started doing this. What’s nice about the mesh bags is that to switch purses, you just take the mesh bag and transfer it to the other one. Hope this will help in the future. And why don’t men have this problem?? Or do they?

The worst of the worst for me was loosing the end of my spike heel on my shoe while being in the city, around 8.00 pm. Of course it was my favourite shoe and I was saying: no-no-no I don’t want to ruin it! And there was not really much chance to find a small shop still open to fix it. But, luckily, I found one shop with a man already closing the job and was asking her nearly crying if he could fix this to be able to go home. Since that I always have a fair it could happen again? And there is nothing to do with it? Or maybe carrying an extra pair of shoe with you all the time? That would be too crazy? Or just get into a taxi?
Anyway, the part about the pin, and the hair tie, it had driven me crazy a few times already, too! :-) And now trying to have it with me :-D

Ah, Garance. The Hair Tie is indeed the ultimate must have item. And, the item I can never find when I need it! This is despite the fact that I purchase these slippery little black lifesavers in bulk. And, by bulk, I mean 2-3 packets of 20 at a time.
I wrap them around my comb, my brush, my pen…still I lose them.
My lipstick, my phone, my hand cream jar… Still I lose them.

Ma grande malédiction, à moi, c’est qu’en changeant de sac, je pense biensur à transvaser tous les trucs TRES utiles: tickets de métro usagés, flyer d’une exposition où je ne mettrais pas les pieds, bouteille d’eau chaude, tas de feuilles vierges (oui, au cas ou j’aurais envie de …. faire des avions en papier), mais par contre mon porte monnaie, NON, il reste dans l’autre sac, du coup bonjour les contrôles de titres de transport, la repose des articles en plein magasin car argent je n’ai pas…. DOULEUR.

Pour moi pas besoin de petit miroir car je trouve toujours un peu ridicule de le sortir en public… l’Iphone répond beaucoup plus discrètement à mes besoins (fais voir la tête que j’ai mon dieuuu)
Sinon en hiver, évidemment le paquet de mouchoirs, sur lesquels une fois usagés et collectionnés au fond du sac, tu retrouves la moitié de ton maquillage soigneusement posé le matin grrr,
la crème hydratante pour les mains au risque de resculpter les mains de tes collègues de boulot le matin (enfin surtout ton chef) mais attention de pas trop en mettre sinon tu peux rester collée aussi,
et y a des jours, il faudrait aussi un ptit protège-slip parce que quand tu respires la fraicheur sauf qu’au plus profond de toi tu sais que c’est pas vrai, ça gâche tout…!!!
Pas grand chose pour ma part, je n’ai ni I phone ni même un téléphone portable …
Donc reste : les mouchoirs en papier et les chewing gum !!!!

Depuis que je suis entrée dans un train très tôt, trop tôt pour me maquiller à la lumière du jour et me brusher la mèche, c’est mon minimum syndical!!. Dans ce fameux train, je peux te dire que de 5h30 à 7 H20, beaucoup de gens avaient le sourire autour de moi, grâce à mon super maquillage et mon frisottis rebelle..vers 6h30, un doute…serait-ce moi qui les mets dans cet état euphorique (deux lycéennes discrètes me mettent l’idée en tête)…pas de miroir, pas le courage de traverser le train avec mes deux sacs pour aller au toilette. J’opte pour la solution camouflage,je fais la fille qui dort et qui a trop besoin d’intimité pour ça: le col remonté, le visage tourné vers la vitre,à demi caché par mon foulard..
Arrivée à 7 h20, toilettes , grosse marade toute seule à la vue de ma tronche , deux kleenex pour enlever le noir autour des yeux qui avait bavé et le kilo de poudre que j’ai sur le visage façon “expressionnisme allemand” ,une pince pour plaquer le ressort qui me sert de frange, et l’angoisse depuis de ne pas avoir de miroir sur moi!!
Hahaha tu me fais mourir de rire, j’ai connu ce genre de scène maintes fois avec des collants (je me vois descendre touuuuuute la rue de Rennes, pressée, en tenant mes collants à travers ma jupe, un bonheur). Bon, je ne me faisais pas interviewer, mais il y avait un monde fou, c’était affreux !

My sunglasses. I can’t even begin to function outdoors without them. And I used to have the hairtie problem but then I cut off all of my hair and now the problem is when I travel and I forget to bring my curl gel with me! Yikes. :)

Je sais faire un élastique à cheveux avec une chaussette noire. Propre.
Seulement pour prendre ma douche. Quand je suis à l’hôtel quelque part.
Wallet, camera, business cards, notebook (and pen), travel tickets, Blackberry(till September; then it’ll be rid of and an iPhone will be in it’s place), migraine relief tablets, Red Bull, naked bar(like a Power Bar but edible), spare bits for the camera, lip balm, small bits of disturbingly unidentifiable “stuff”, Tascam DR05 recorder and spare batteries, earphones, leatherman, keys, probably something of my daughter’s, cleansing wipes, sunglasses.
I either need to rationalise this or get a bigger bag.
I always carry a little pouch with all the necessary tings, and to never EVER forget anything I just flip it from one bag to the other. My trick to not forgetting it is to ALWAYS leave my keys in it because I have to have them to lock the door before I leave. I stole the tip from an elegant friend of mine and found it quite a simple way to remember everything when I first got used to it.
In it I always carry:
– my keys
– a nail file
– a pack of gum
– my I phone
– a mirror
– my most simple but necessary lip balm (in case of chapped and dry lips emergency)
– a nude lipstick (in case of an “I need to look more chick” emergency)
– my public transportation car (kind of like a metro- card)
– my Lóccitane hand cream (the small travel one) (in case of dry hands emergency)
– a hair tie + some clips
– a lighter (even though I do not smoke )
– my black khôl (in case of “i need to look more mysterious” emergency”
– some painkillers (just in case)
– my earplugs
And Yes I know it sounds MASSIVE* but all these things are small and take almost no space, and I always have what I need!
*It’s a little bigger than a big wallet but smaller than a clutch, just perfect
Mon Mp3, un bon bouquin, mon appareil photo (on est jamais à l’abri de tomber sur une merveille pour les yeux), porte-feuille, clés, carnet de croquis… Tout ça rangé dans ma plus belle besace, prête à arpenter la ville.
PS : J’adore le détail de l’illustration, les épingles à nourrices accrochées au sac héhé, pas bête la chouette ;)
I feel severely naked if I leave the house without my bag which is stuffed full of my essentials (and probably a fair few ‘non-essential but I might just need it’ items)!
My bare-essentials survival kit is probably:
– My medication for my IBS (I always have some in my pocket )
– Tissues (my allergies insist on making themselves known at the most inconvenient times!)
– My phone (without it I have no idea what the time is and I feel very alone all of a sudden)
My bag though always also contains:
– At least one safety pin
– My sunglasses (I’m practically blind without them regardless of the season)
– A light scarf (great for when the weather turns/my hair needs to be tamed/I’m feeling upset)
– Headache and allergy pills
– A pencil/pen and a notebook or some sort of paper (I forget everything if it isn’t written down!)
iphone, biensûr ! and a square of chocolate, I always put one in my bag from various coffee places, and then I am always super happy to have it handy when I get a chocolate urge
i also have a ton of useless things in my bag, but that’s for another post ;)

Quand de nouvelles chaussures vous font mal et que vous ne les supportez plus, les pansements pour vous soulager sont les bienvenus.
Sinon il y aussi du parfum ou du déo, je suis souvent en retard et par conséquent je cours sans arrêt, et comme j’ai une peur viscérale des odeurs, je préfère être préparée ! lol

I agree on the mouchoirs and the hair band. Can’t do without. Sunglasses are a must when it gets to nice weather. Un cheque et un cheque vacances, au cas ou. Driving license or other small piece of identity that fits in my purse – always useful. My Iphone and its music.
But my real survival item is for when I travel: wet wipes. A magazine or book is always useful when flying in an old plane. Newly loaded music in the Iphone. Podcasts are also a good one. A little notebook.
besides the things you mentioned – sunglasses and MP3player or i Phone or mobile with headphones, whatever, anything to listen to music is extremely important because i hate walking alone down the streets without listening to music i feel like wasting time and when i have a music player i`m always sure i`ll find a moment to enjoy my favourite songs whenever i want to:)

J’emmene systématiquement mon Blackberry (aussi important qu’un iPhone ;)), mon iPod, des chewing gum, limes a ongle, echantillon de parfum, miroir, mouchoirs, bouteille d’eau, gel nettoyant pour les mains, crème pour les mains et j’ai toujours 1 élastique sur mon bras droit! Parce que comme tu dis si bien, ne pas avoir d’élastique c’est le pire.
Enfin bref, je suis peut-être un peu taré avec tout ce que j’ai dans mon sac..qui est super lourd d’ailleurs.
du baume pr les lèvres, du désinfectant pour les mains ET de la crème car elles sont sèches après chaque passage maniaque au désinfectant (c’est-à-dire à peu près tout le temps, je sais, faut q je me fasse soigner!), lime à ongles, miroir de poche bien sûr! j’oublie quoi? ah oui, un stylo! et des kleenex! et un crayon pour les sourcils! voilà, ouf!
En gros, tu as su résumer tout ce dont une fille a besoin dans sa trousse de secours… Et pour celles qui ont une mèche/longue frange et qui en ont marre, une barrette! Parce que c’est comme l’élastique, quand on demande à nos copines, AUCUNE n’en a… :(

C’est exact que sans un élastique ou une pince glissante je me sens terriblement perdue durant une journée et cette journée parait vraiment longue après mais c’est vrai que sans son portable nos doigts ont TRÈS souvent l’air bête.

Ah oui! Et de la crème pour les mains et du Doliprane! L’iphone est tellement complet que personne ne peut s’en passer : il transporte ma musique, mes photos et mon appareil photo, mon agenda, mes magazines, mes dictionnaires, de quoi me divertir, c’est mon ami!
It never fails that you run to someone you haven’t seen in years when you stepped away from your home with literally, no makeup and your hair lost your normal bounce. I’ve learn to always carry perfect big earrings that compliment your skin, eyes, your face and slip it on so that you look more made-up.

Garance- this anecdote beats yours. I was eating dinner at an expensive restaurant in The Village with some friends and went into the bathroom closed the stall, undid my belt and unbuttoned my jeans before it sank in that the bathroom was totally disgusting- why is that? In an expensive restaurant why should ladies rooms look like the dank holes we squat in at rock concerts- dirty, stopped up toilets, wet seats, floors, etc… You get the picture. As soon as I realized what I was facing I turned around and walked out, back into the dining room. I was still so distracted by the horror movie I’d just witnessed in the bathroom it took me a minute (in front of all the posh people with their pinots and single malts) to realize I hadn’t closed my pants and my belt was hanging wide open like two arms waving come on in, see the show. I think it’s time for women to rise up against these filthy bathrooms. It’s a real injustice. I know there are wars, suffering, poverty. But priorities, people, priorities.
hehe yep, I agree, safety pins are a must… and it’s about timeless wisdom, ’cause my grandma first taught me that. :)

I’m a freelance fashion journalist and blogger, so notebook and pencil are always in my bag to not forget that one amazing thought (and yes, if I don’t immediately write it down… I do forget), I’m an illustrator who has weekly art classes, adding a small sketchbook and large pencil case filled with pens, pencils, eraser, sharpener, ruler, brushes to my bag…(I did feel like quite the life saver, when I was browsing through a small boutique and the lady behind the counter (while looking at some pencil marks on a tag) asked (with a slight hint of frustration): ‘I guess nobody has an eraser, right?’ When I answered… ‘Me! I’ve got one’ (while going through my bag and trying to get it out), she most certainly must have thought, ‘what else is in there?’…),I’m a mom of a 2-year old boy, whose daily declarations of independence tell me clearly he wants to do everything by himself, but he always wants my bag to magically hold a croissant, peach flavored ice-tea and favorite toy of the moment – Optimus Prime – , so depending if I’m the one picking him up from daycare, that’s in as well. Last but not least… I’m a book worm and nothing combines better with a metro ride, than a lovely read (I feel naked without one!). At this moment it’s Christian Dior’s Biography by Marie-France Pochna, that keeps me company. My Bobby Brown Rose Petal lipgloss, phone, wallet are part of the bag inventory as well. Yes. My bag is XL. Leather, once white, once love at first sight, once a gift from my husband when we visited Budapest. J’avais lu un truc une fois sur les japonaises qui avaient un genre de “sacs à tout ” pour chaque occasion et qui changer le contenu de leur grand sac suivant où elles allaient et avec qui. Ça donne un truc du genre:
– je sors au parc avec mes enfants? J’ai dans mon sac une bouteille d’eau, de quoi grignoter, des kleenex voire des pansements, quelques petits jouets, le doudou et le carnet de santé avec de quoi payer le médecin en cas d’urgence.
– je sors avec des grandes personnes cette fois? J’ai de quoi faire des retouches maquillage, un collant en plus si je suis en jupe/robe, un joli foulard et un nécessaire basique à couture pour recoudre un bouton ou autre truc qui pourrait lâcher quand il faut pas.
Bon, c’est sûr, faut y penser à chaque fois mais quand même, l’idée d’avoir un kit de survie déjà tout prêt, je trouve l’idée séduisante.
De mon côté, jamais sans mes kleenex, ma petite trousse à pharmacie d’urgence (du paracétamol, un truc contre les maux de ventre, une brossette pour le truc coincé entre les dents, une lime à ongles, du baume à lèvres) et un sac pour les courses de dernière minute. Comme je fais partie de ces gens qui n’ont pas d’Iphone (et s’en sortent très bien quand même, merci! ;-)), je sors avec mon portable-normal-même-pas-tactile quand j’y pense, sans me prendre la tête pour autant!
L’élastique, le miroir, la paire de collant (selon la tenue), et le iPhone sont toujours dans mon sac. En plus, j’ai toujours un stick à lèvre, j’en mets tout le temps car avoir les lèvres sèches c’est désagréable et ça fait pas soigné, même sale je trouve. Puis j’ai toujours une crème pour les mains.

This may sound ridiculous but the number one thing I CAN’T leave home without is my hairbrush. Leaving the house without it literally ruins my whole day. I think my wavy hair is beautiful but it’s a bitch to care for. Haha!
bah moi (même si ça rentre pas ds une trousse de survie) un parapluie ; de la poudre au cas ou le soleil fait son apparition sur mon visage ou bien la pluie et que du coup, je brille ; un ptit gel anti-bactérien parce qu’il se trouve que dans mon lycée on est trop pauvres pour avoir du savon et même du papier toilette et rien que d’effleurer une poignée me donne envie de partir en courant pour prendre une douche à l’eau de javel t aussi le trajet en bus, (une fois j’étais dans le métro à New York et j’ai vu une mère et sa fille plutôt obèses, avec les cheveux gras qui mangeaient des frites ds un sac plastique et elles se lèchaient les doigts puis se tennaient à la barres et recommençaient… ça ma dégoutée à viiiiiiiiiiiie) ; j’ai aussi du stick à lèvres, mon rouge à lèvre mate que je tapote sur mes lèvres si j’ai envie de faire croire que mes lèvres sont naturellement vives comme blanche neige un peu ; un mirroir, des chewing gums ; des lisopaïnes ; des mouchoirs… ce qui fait qu’à la moindre sortie je suis obligée de prendre une besace alors même que j’ai envie de prendre ma petite sacoche noire lancel que je peux mettre en bandoulière. et comme je prend un grand sac, je me dis que je peux rajouter un magazine au cas où je m’ennuierais, un pull au cas où j’aurais froid… Et je parts avec un sac qui pèse la moitié de mon poids. Je n’utilise rien alors que le seul truc indispensables est mon portefeuille dans lequel est rangé mon pass navigo. Donc je passe dans le métro clandestinement, collée à un passager qui a son pass, je me fais griller, on fouille mon sac, et on croit que je suis terroriste parce que il y a de quoi cacher une bombe à l’intérieure.
Quant à mon BLACKBERRY, il reste greffé dans ma main tellement il est grave indipensable à ma survie ainsi que mon I-Pod. Voilà, Tchao les loulous
Pour ma part je ne sors jamais de chez moi sans ma bague de chez Agatha. Si je ne la porte pas je me sens “nue” !
Et puis sans parler de mes chewing-gum , je suis une addicte !!

Mais sinon pour ce qui est de l’élastique à cheveux j’en ai toujours un sur moi, un joli mais discret que je glisse à mon poignet, il se fond parmi mes bracelets fétiches et dès que j’en ai besoin, “hop!” il est là. ;)

Ben.. en faite moi, c’est beaucoup moins glamour que vous toutes…j’ai toujours du “Gaviscon”(bicarbonate de sodium) avec moi, parce que je suis une vraie angoissée. Y a que ça qui me calme mes nausées soudaines et ma sensation de : “olala, j’vais tomber dans les pommes!”
Sauf si Brad Pitt se trouve à porter de main, là, je laisse le Gaviscon dans mon sac!
Et sincèrement je vérifie toujours d’avoir un petit tube dans mon sac! sinon je file à la pharmacie du coin.
En plus glam, j’ai mon gloss transparent, un rouge à lèvre Sephora, un petit miroir “les cakes de Bertrand”, et un élastique(toujours!) oui oui, j’aurais été ravie d’être la Pour vous prêter le mien Garance!

Yes to tights! One day, I put on a pair in the morning that seemed to fit, but I obviously had lost weight because I was running from my office to the InterContinental hotel on Michigan Avenue in Chicago (possibly the busiest street IN Chicago) and they seemed to slowly pool down around my legs and fall to my ankles! How embarrassing! I hopped in a cab IMMEDIATELY and took them off (awkward). Luckily the gift shop at the InterContinental had some spanx.
Otherwise my bag (and desk drawer) is very Girl Scout style, and otherwise nuts:
-Hotel sewing kit
-Phone
-diary and pencil
-lip balm (three different ones usually)
-mascara
-tissues
-various pharmaceuticals in a small tube – painkiller, lactose pill, allergy pill, imodium (comes in handy more than you think.)
-perfume samples in case you get a bit pongy
-FlossCard (dental floss in a credit card)
-hand creme
-emery board (my nails always snag)
You can usually find 1,000 other things but I try to pack light.

Je sais que je réponds un peu tard mais vaut mieux tard que jamais !!!
Alors mon gros problème c’est que mon Speedy 30 c’est une valise donc je prends tout ce qui est possible et imaginable à ma survie ou toute autre éventualité urgente:
– portefeuille (avec cartes bleue, rouge et tutti –> on ne sait jamais !)
– un ptit carnet élastiqué dès que je pense à qqc ou que je veux faire un croquis de ce que j’aime
– une mini trousse pharmacie/secours/survie extrême (excedryn d’office pour ces fichues migraines, goutte pour le nez (si j’ai le nez bouché je ne réponds plus de quoi que ce soit !), lip balm d’OFFICE !, Anti-inflammatoire 600mg (pour les courbatures, c’est le problème quand on pense toujours avoir 15 ans mouahaha), plusieurs élastiques à cheveux (au cas où une fille m’en demande un, elle est toujours hyper méga heureuse comme si je lui offrais une paire de Louboutin + quelques pinces plates (à cause de cette fichue frange qui repousse donc si j’attache pas je ressemble à un Lévrier Afghan !), hand creme (foutue sécheresse de peau), des mouchoirs et une mini mini brosse et des tampons (toujours le même effet que les élastiques quand une fille en a besoin d’un!)
– une mini trousse hi-tech (un chargeur Iphone, des écouteurs, le digipass banque, un bic et une clé USB)
– mes badges bureau/métro/train
– l’IPHONE of course !!!
– mes lunettes d’ordinateur sinon c’est migraine et là je suis bien contente d’avoir ma trousse de secours lol
– un parapluie tout petit histoire de pas ressembler à un caniche (ehhhhhhhhhh oui je vis en Belgique ça ne pardonne pas !)
voilà je pense que c’est à peu près tout, enfin j’admets que c’est déjà pas mal !
Conséquence directe: je me tape une scoliose tellement ce sac est lourd, donc je prends mes anti-inflammatoire mouahahaha
et en soirée quand je dois faire LE choix pour que l’essentiel rentre dans une pochette –> heuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu c’est COMPLEXE :)
a nail file is a MUST! (next time you are in Muji- buy about 8 of these thingees… http://www.muji.eu/pages/online.asp?Sec=17&Sub=127&PID=929 they are incredibly handy and i keep the stashed in all my handbags in regular rotation… )
sunglasses are pretty much the most important things in my life.. the RER is too bring in the morning!

and i carry a real handkerchief.. they get washed regularly and somehow LESS disgusting than wadded up tissues in all the pockets.. but most modern folks beg to differ..
i like to have a little pocket knife.. preferably one with a wine screw.. you never know!!
