summer-recap_garance-dore

9 years ago by

It’s the end of the summer, so it’s time for my summer recap, because I miss summer already* and the only way to make summer last a little longer is to talk about summer.

What? I repeated the word “summer” five times in the same sentence?
Yep. As we say in France, when you love something, you don’t count. So here we go, RECAP.

This summer, I…

Was a judge for Project Runway.

It was kind of unbelievable, I agree.

Finding myself on the panel of such a cult show with such famous presenters like Tim Gunn, Nina Garcia, Zac Posen and Heidi Klum (super nice) could have stressed me out to death, but I did what I usually do in those situations: I pretend no one is watching me and promise myself not to watch the show afterward so it’s like it never happened.

It’s kind of ostrich behavior, I agree. But it worked!!! I even managed to say a few words without throwing up my snack (sorry for the visual). So, not bad, right?

Plus, I got the cutest text message in the world from my sister Sacha, who’s 20 years old and not afraid to say it like it is. I say, thank you Project Runway for making my sister Sacha very, very proud ;)

text-message

[Translation
Sacha: So you’re going to be on a show??? That’s huge!!
Me: Yep, it’s true. Project Runway.
Sacha: FUCK That’s huggeeeee
You didn’t tell me!!
You are truly the pride of the family
Soon the city pride
More like national
Me: Ahahaha thank you!!]

Got me some highlights.

Remember when I cut my hair and said that now I would be brave enough to try anything and that my next thing would be to go platinum blonde?
I lied.

I almost did it, though. I went to Clyde’s hoping for sunny highlights (“Put lots of sunshine in my hair, Clyde. Clyde, I want to be blonde!!!”) and when I saw his deer-in-the-headlights look, I lost a little bit of enthusiasm. He suggested that we do caramel highlights instead, which I accepted without hesitation since I love caramel (salted butter caramel).

A little later, I had lovely highlights, and Clyde told me they would get lighter during the summer, which filled me with a suspicious joy**.
And it’s true! Not only did they get lighter, but I also got a tan – and everyone thought it looked pretty, except for my mother who only likes me the way she made me.

Now they’ve gotten so light that I’m on the verge of zebra, but Clyde and I planned ahead for that and we’re going to go back to a darker chocolate color for winter – my caramel highlights will be a good starting point for adding depth (=hair stylist jargon)(but you get the idea, right?)(chocolate fudge brownie)

Summary: I love changing my hair color. Even if it’s very subtle, it’s cool to change colors with the seasons!!!

Moved.

This is crazy, kids: I live alone.

I would love to tell you more about how I feel, but honestly it’s too soon, so I just wanted to let you know that all your messages were really touching.
And I also wanted to say to those of you who wrote to me who are going through the same thing right now, that you shouldn’t be afraid – just let life flow. Sometimes it’s painful, but we always end up finding our way. And you often end up finding yourself along the way too.

That was just a quick little Psychology Magazine side note, now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

(No, but seriously, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!)

I haven’t done the Ice Bucket Challenge (yet).

I thought I might have slipped through the cracks, trying to make myself very small to go unnoticed so no one would challenge me, and I figured that the excitement was mostly over, so I was going to be ok now.

A few people very kindly asked if I would mind if they challenged me and I pretended not to see their texts (sorry @LolaRykiel! I hope you’re not too mad at me!!!) and other people went for it and texted me AFTER they’d already challenged me (“You’re going to hate me, but…”) Yep, @SammyGaga, I hate you, I despise you.

Now, what do you think, should I do it or not? Who should I challenge in return?
(I’ve got 5 hours to decide)

PS = the Ice Bucket Challenge didn’t come out of nowhere, it’s a campaign to support the fight against ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and we can all donate here.

Stopped wearing a watch.

Ok, ok, fine, it’s a very #whogivesafuck piece of information (I mean, except for the watch industry who must be worried that no one really needs a watch anymore because of these damn phones that do EVERYTHING)(like, even in the countryside, people don’t even buy flashlights anymore: they have their phones!!!)(don’t even talk about the map industry now that we have Google Maps!!!)(ok, I’m getting SUPER off topic) but I used to be the kind of person who always, always had the exact time and my watch was always on my wrist, but now time has gotten a little fuzzy and I really like that.

I wonder which watch I’ll fall for next.

Spent 20 minutes in a helicopter.

SERIOUSLY, I MEAN, WHAT! NO, REALLY. It had been on my bucket list for years (not my ice bucket challenge list, mind you) and I had never been in a helicopter before!!!

So this summer, when my family came to see me, we decided to take a ride in a helicopter over New York. For some reason I happened to talk about it to my agent, Walter, and he sent me the following text:

“Oh, but those things crash every two minutes!!!”

So I couldn’t sleep all night (thanks, Walter) even though, logically, I think that if those things really did crash every two minutes, we would hear about it – even so, I spent the night clinging to a helicopter propeller, rescuing my mother from the waves, while trying to save my Saint Laurent bag simultaneously.

The next day, I was a little nervous (and I’d chosen a Zara bag) but in the end, being in a helicopter was much less scary than being on a plane. You feel weightless, the take off is really easy, it’s really pleasant.
AND THE VIEWS ARE INCREDIBLE!!!! I posted a bunch of them on Instagram, if you haven’t seen them yet…
Well, that’ll teach you not to follow me. Pffff, come on, seriously.

So anyway, I recommend going on a helicopter ride over New York. Experience of a lifetime, I say.

Finally went to Quebec.

I can’t believe it took me this long!!! I was welcomed like a queen and I gained five pounds, just like you should – the food is so good in Montreal!!! I already want to go back, it was fantastic, and it’s only one hour away from New York. I should totally take a helicopter to go there.

Finally went to Germany.

I mean, finally!!! It was great, and there again, everyone was so nice, and it was so beautiful, and so fun, and I ate so many sausages (yep, you have to honor the culture of the country you’re in!) and I already want to go back. Munich – amazing. Next time I’ll go to Berlin!

So, there you go, for now. Long live summer, and if you still have a little vacation left, please enjoy it for me. Send some photos. Finish all the rosé. Big kisses!

Oh yeah, so what about that Bucket Challenge?

————————

* Like every September, New York Fashion Week is going to fall on us while we still have sand in our hair and we’ll have to put away our sarongs with a tear in our eyes.

** No one should be that happy about the possibility of changing their hair color.

I am very late to the blog, I am sorry I didn’t know about your work before now. I am inspired. I feel as if I am in a place in my life getting ready to leap forward into living more and making the most of me while still keeping my family intact! Your blogs and instagram and of course pinterest are fun, modern and really interesting. Thank you.
I also think you are very brave for all you have been through. Break ups can be awful but you gain so much growth from them. Have faith and take your time to walk through whatever you need to cherish the good and start anew.

This Summer recap is fantastic and I hate to see Summer end. I am begging each day to last a little longer as I prep to send my little ones to school.
Thank you again for the inspiration and fun!

  • I feel weird about the ice bucket thing, seeing all the water thrown when so many in the world have a lot of work to get water.

  • Madie merci!!! Bon déménagement ;)

  • wow busy summer! You should definitely go to Berlin it’s a fascinating city. Congrats for Project Runway. The only time I was in a helicopter was from Nice to Monaco, you can see Eze village on the cliffs and I was ecstatic! Yes to the ice bucket, I was nominated by a little boy and could not resist seeing his joy when doing so…Why not nominating your sister, Nina G., Sophie F.?

Happy some of the kind words by your ‘fans’ comforted you. Take care :)

• I have a confession. I used to watch Project Runway, then stopped because it got too routine but then found out you were a guest host and ended up being that girl who had to DVR it (and check several times that it was in fact DVR’d) because I simply had to hear what you had to say! Stay classy, G. Everything you touch turns to gold. Including hearts! Viva la été!

  • I love this post! It feels like the original voice of your blog. :) You have a knack for connecting with readers through your honesty and humor. I am looking forward to more storytelling style posts. Congrats on all your successes and best wishes for more to come. xo

  • Garance, this is only the second time I’ve ever written a post on anything! (ok, so the first was when you cut your hair, I couldn’t resist because I thought it was beautiful!). I just know that you are going to LOVE living alone! I am anticipating a future post about it. There are so many good things about living alone. Enjoy it for now…. xoxo

  • I am suddenly living alone and finding it hard though sometimes wonderful. Maybe more and more wonderful as it unfolds. Tips about single life on this blog would be very helpful.

Ah Garance – you beautiful lady… what a lovely post… am going through a similar “move” myself – thank you for your inspiring words… You have an incredible gift for saying the right thing, whatever we’re going through… I loved your mother’s words re your hair colour and your sister’s texts were awesome. Love might not work out in one guise but to have constant familial love and support makes such a difference during life’s challenges – I am lucky in that regard too – we’re very, very blessed… here’s to families of whatever shape or size… onwards and upwards – allez, allez! xxx

    Courage ! Merci !

Thanks for sharing and being so honest Garance. You’re an inspiration!

  • As a very long time reader you never cease to touch me with your humor and your joie de vivre- even though a touch time in public. All the best to you Garance and you find your way through. Keep doing what you do…xo

  • thinking of you during this time, and hoping the best for you! much love and hugs

    Rosine

Merci à toute ton équipe. Continuez.

  • Dear Garance….just to say that I did not send you a sisterhood support message because I was moved by the way your readers reacted to the breakup news and with a lot of respect for you no one commented and kept it dignified . Way to go for something so hard to be lived through a public space where everyone shares their thoughts and opinions

you rocked on this girl ! big time

regarding the Ice Bucket Challenge….don’t do it..now it is beginning to feel more like a self marketing stunt than a real charity move…just donate money to the cause …I think that because of the hype , the charity will be forgotten when it is no longer cool or fun to do it ( and share the pix ) …..my advice : don’t do it , donate silently instead and remind people to do so every year instead of a one of ice bucket challenge thing

Helicopters ? you are nuts ! speaking of your agent Walter , here is a fun photo of 1984 when I cast him for my photographer tony viramontes in the now cult Genius Group campaign …he is the one with the big long hair in the black and white group with Violetta Sanchez etc http://www.fashionsphinx.com/tony-viramontes-part-3/

I am in california now….it is still super summer here

  • Hello Garance!
    Cha

  • Tu es géniale JE T’ADOOOOORE! Reviens à Montréal!

  • Love the summer re-cap.
Though I really can’t wait for Fall! Scarf me!

  • thank you, garance, from another girl who moved this summer. we need to hear these things for ourselves, from each other. merci beaucoup. XO

  • Sounds like an amazing summer. I too am dreading summer’s end and can’t even think about winter’s icy fingers beckoning! I’m so glad to hear that you enjoyed Quebec. I’ve always wanted to go and now that I know you like it, I have even more reason to finally book my trip!

    Cheers,

Dear friend, I have been reading your blog for almost 8 years now. It`s my secret getaway from work, subway stations, busy buses..and life in general :) It`s like eating really good chocolate cakes 2-3 times a week, in the kitchen, when no one`s watching you. Reading your blog and seeing how beautifully it has grown and how much you evolved, just makes me really really happy.

I am sorry for you and Scott, and i hope both of you will be alright on your new paths. Life is like that i guess, full of ups and downs. I know, because i`ve had mine too. But this is what Ryan Gosling movies are for :)

Keep your head up and you will always find sunshine!

    Lots of love,
    Andreea

  • love your summer-hair-food going into my favourite ice-cream-colour

Berlin! please come (but wait until spring, lets say April, winter is not the nicest of all times here & I guess you won’t make it in autumn anymore…)

living alone puts things into a new perpective & you can constantly change the rooms without annoying somebody & you can always close your door behind you <3

Hi Garance, I can tell you went through some major life changers this Summer and for the better I hope. When I first heard about your breakup, I was shocked as I considered you two one of the ideal couples in this world, but I believe you did this for a good reason. The good thing in life is when you say goodbye to something, you are greeted with a new hello. When I lost my job and left Canada 3 years ago, I was not sure how my life would unfold, but I had faith, kept going and followed my calling, now I find myself very happy in my newly found life in Buenos Aires living my passions. I have no doubt you will only become even better and stronger in your new chapter of life !!! wish you all the best and big kisses !!!

Well, since you asked…. I’ve had an awesome summer. Spent much of June in New York, had my 18-year old godson from Bermuda as a first-time visitor to New York so it was fun seeing the city with fresh eyes. Then Hilton Head for three weeks – beach, boats, summer cocktails, fresh shrimp, summer reading. Then off to Paris for my annual 30-day apartment/house swap with friends. My first Bastille Day fireworks over the Eiffel Tower with my French “famille.” Lots of fun with Parisian friends, visitors from the States. Four days in Milano with friends where I got to see the Last Supper — tears in my eyes. Now back to Hilton Head for more of the above. I’d hate me if I didn’t like me so much.

As for the Ice Bucket Challenge, I’m all for ALS awareness, however by now, I’d rather see you put the ice in your cocktail and make a donation to ALS.org. I think too many people are dumping ice water over their heads rather than giving money. Do both. Or just write a check!

  • Bonjour Garance,

  • Garance!

I’ve been reading your blog for years and I think this is somehow my first time commenting. I can’t imagine why! Your style of writing, of drawing, of photography, it all captures so much of what I both love and relate to, and even though you’re far too cool for me I almost think of you as a friend (ha).

I might be deciding to comment for the first time because this post a) captures a lot of what I’ve been going through, too, and b) has helped me think about all the great things in my life despite some stress. I went through a breakup earlier this summer, too, and I was also /just/ nominated for the Ice Bucket Challenge last night! (I can’t wait to hear – or see – what you decide.)

But I’ve also had a great internship in Boston, visited family in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, spent time with best friends and family, and am getting ready for another internship – this time abroad (in Geneva)! So I’m practicing my French and hopefully will start reading your blog in French instead of English. :)

  • Busy summer! Hopeful fall! New Digs – make them beautiful!

  • Garance, how do you feel now about living in New York? Do you ever see yourself moving back to France?

  • Dear Garance-
I have been thinking of you so much since you and Scott made your announcement. I appreciate how open you’ve always been, and I agree with the poster above that said that you’re brave to do so. You are an inspiration and feel like a girlfriend, even though I only met you once (and, truly, I felt this way before I’d really met you, because I “met” you through your blog). I think you’re such a cool chick and am excited to see what life has for you next. I know it’s going to be as amazing as you are (because you deserve amazing!).

    xo,
    Ali

  • GO TO BERLIN! It is, dead set, the city I most regret not spending enough time in when I was in Europe!

Living alone was on my bucket list of things I HAD to do. And I did for a year and I loved it! Get a cat and relish eating when you want (even if it’s as soon as you get home from work), snuggle on the ENTIRE couch, watch all the nerdy docos you want and your cat won’t judge.

    Big love!

  • Garance, I love your comment about your mom, she only loves you the way she made you! How funny this is my mom too! It took her years to get over me getting my ears pierced (and it was her own mother who took me to get them pierced when I was 13!). And she hated my platinum blonde pixie hair so much that she offered to pay for me to get it dyed dark brown again. Now I am 30, and I really am tempted to get a tiny tattoo, but I am afraid she will never accept it.

  • Garance…I too had never been to Quebec and then to top it off who do I find there but my favorite blogger Garance!! Perfect timing. I can’t wait until I can hear you in English in good ole Washington DC. Sooner than later !! Cheers to you and to the fabulous summer of 2014!!

  • I just have one thing to say, Garance I LOVE YOU!

So sad about Scott but you’ll come out of this stronger than before.
Thank you for being such an inspiration. You’re one of the reasons I blog.

If you ever want to visit Malaysia (please do, it’s summer all year long) let me know!!

    Lots of love from Malaysia,
    Jillian

  • When I found out that Garance’ Dore merchandise are already available here in the Philippines, I literally went to the mall and got myself the phone casing and notebooks! You’re a huge inspiration to me. I hope I could visit your studio when I come and visit this November. :)

  • jenjenchoo August, 26 2014, 11:10 / Reply

dearest garance, i must confess i squealed when i saw you on project runway (i avoid all social media like the plague so it was a true surprise) you looked gorgeous and not nervous at all – and re: living alone, i went through my own version of rship tribulations a while back, it was a huge change going from serial monogamist to single lady but you know what, never more in my life (so far) where i truly feel like my most authentic self (also you get to stock the fridge with exactly what you like to eat ha ha)

    sending you much love xxx

  • Hey Garance! Just like to let you know (although you might already know) that your merchandise are now available in my country, Philippines! :) Saw them at National Bookstore. Can’t wait to hear what you have to share with regards to moving on, moving forward. But take your time.

With regards to the ice-bucket challenge, I am just compelled to share about it. I think it’s a great stunt to promote awareness about ALS as well as raise funds about it, but I am not too keen on the organization where the funds go to. I believe that the organization adheres to embryonic stem cell research, a process that involves harvesting stem cells from an embryo (a fertilized egg that eventually grows into a human person) for cure of ALS; simply put, it is committing abortion, taking away life to heal another. I am afraid that the funds will generate and demand much more of that type of research given the organization who handles it. There are more ways to help out in ALS, and other organizations who also research for a cure but are not into embryonic stem cell research. I hope that when you do decide to do the ice bucket challenge, you will opt to donate in another organization instead.

  • Your blog always makes me smile. I love the way you write and I am excited to see what the next chapter looks like for you. You are so talented and authentic and I see big things!! Really hope you do more Pardon my French videos for fashion week?? Miss that.

  • Garance, thank you for this great post. Your candid honesty is such a breath of fresh air. I have thought about you quite a lot since your announcement and I really hope you are OK. (I too – same boat.) But at the same time I think we all know you will be. There is a goodness in you. Its like you swallowed a light bulb or something! So your next chapter will be just as wonderful I am sure…I was wondering if you might one day write about how you overcame your shyness (or how you pretend to!) The idea of burying your head in sand is one tip (I’ll take note!) But I would be so interested to hear how you’ve managed to overcome fear of public speaking or standing out in order to create your success. Enjoy setting up your new home – I am sure it will be tres chic! x

  • I had a quiet summer, except for last week. I finally went abroad, in Mallorca! It was amazing, as relaxing and fun as I hoped it would be. I ate all the jamon in the island (I think there’s a shortage out there because of me), I tasted almond liqueur and carob liqueur and (despite my fear of water and lack of swimming training), I went parasailing!!

Strongly recommend it! >X It was an unbelievable experience, I felt like I could touch the sun. I can’t wait to upload some pics on http://fashiongrinch.com/

  • It looks like you have a great Summer in spite of the living alone issue. I didn’t write you or anything because we think we know you, but we don’t. And I’m kind of cold when it comes to this things because I never know what to say. And when I try I always make epic fails. Just one thing: laugh a lot. That has helped me always and I think you are more or less like me when it comes to humour (again, I think I know you but I don’t). Anywhoooo! I’m super excited because next week I’m going to change a Little bit my hair color too!!! It’s like I’m going to be this brand new person… but without changing too much. And it will definitely make me look thinner. And I’m going to start eating less chocolate and everything is going to be perfect finally. I’m kidding… who believes that? Ehem…
If you come back to Germany you should (but really, should) visit Hamburg. I live in Bremen (a crappy town next to Hamburg) and I love going to Hamburg. It’s super elegant. And has the most amazing shops. You see, in Bremen everyone dresses like they are going to hike… in Hamburg you see capes, and beautiful boots and tall blonde handsome men and beautiful polished women and there is a lake and a gorgeous harbour. And you totally can enjoy a helicopter ride above it all!!! ;)
    xx,
    E.

  • Garance,

    Bravo !

Such a lovely summer recap. It’s really wonderful to hear your voice again. You’re graceful and resilient and a true inspiration to all of us, and your gorgeous illustration exudes both the wistfulness of a summer gone, memories of momentous events, and the anticipatio of a beautiful Autumn to come.

There is one way to make the summer last twice as long for you, if you like: come to Australia! Come to Perth where the beaches are gorgeous and just a drive away from amazing vineyards and restful trees and the heat and mini-desert of the great Notth West, where you can ride camels on Kalbarri Beach… Or, travel around and through Australia to experience all of the above… And where summer is about to arrive. Take care!

  • Such a cute post. Thank you, Garance.

  • Ai-Ch'ng August, 27 2014, 7:26 / Reply

As for the bucket challenge, Garance: do it!

I learnt this afternoon that it’s what is in your heart- your intention- that’s most important. Sure there are people doing the ALS Bucket Challenge for their own ends. However, this afternoon, my fifteen year old son excitedly told me that one of his school friends is doing it this afternoon, and that this friend will nominate him tomorrow morning. My son is SO excited to be a part of this, that he and his buddies looked up ALS and saw the incurable effects of it. The boys are so thrilled to be a part of something to raise awareness of this disease. And the challenge is making them reach out to friends and relatives whom they would like to nominate for the challenge, whom they would otherwise not be in touch with.

I feel our intent is everything in challenges like this– so if you want to do it, I imagine it’s from your heart- and you’ve shown us how generous your heart is… So go for it!

  • Garance,,
I wanted to wrap my arms around you when I heard about your breakup. It takes time to recover and you will look back and think… I made the right decision. You have a wonderful family, who love and support you. You are so talented and continue to use that talent. Great things ahead for you babe.
    Hugs and stay strong
    Monique.

  • Mlle Doré,
Fraîcheur de vivre ce post. Merci beaucoup.

  • Long time reader, first time commenter. Hello, Garance.
Your mother loves you the way she made you, and your sister tells you like it is. That’s something special, something to celebrate. The motherhood and sisterhood are so good at times of change I find, and make all beginnings and endings so much easier to glide through. And there are so many beginnings and endings in life, aren’t there, from the minute to the massive. Which is why I LOVE a recap. Thank you.
You’re so very courageous, and don’t need a bucket of ice to show it, however, that’s a fantastic cause so crack on (opt for Zara, not Saint Laurent).
And chuck that watch, Easy Rider. I haven’t worn a watch since I was 11, I feel they get in the way…in so many ways. But anyway if there’s one you like, let it sweep you off your feet, rather than you fall for it. Love to you and your autumn ahead. It shall be magnificent.

  • And ps all your comments show what a huge sisterhood you have. So much love that it gives me warmth to read them. That must be so comforting and warming for you. A world of love, that you have created and fully deserve XX And PPS Walter is such a RAD name, isn’t it?

Ice Bucket Challenge: oui oui oui!

    Salut Garance

  • love you garance! Glad to know you are ok. you are so real and honest in your blog I feel like that we are friends in real life!!! Wish you the best of everything.

  • hey garance,
you should totally check this out before you decide on whether you do the challenge or not:)

originally it was either donate or dump a bucket of ice over your head, not do both anyways… so maybe your way is the patrick stewart way?:)

    bisous!x

  • Tu me fais tellement rire ! Magnifique post !

    NAN MAIS LA CLASSE !!!

  • Me, too! With the highlights, not the helicopter. I had a sudden whim to go lighter and brighter, so instead of the usual caramel highlights, I went golden. And I’ve been told three times already how young it makes me look. So, what I’m wondering now is, “Exactly how old did I look before?!?”

  • Good to see you have your enthusiasm back – living alone is awesome, it opens new perspectives, so you never know what might be round the corner for you! I look forward to reading about your new adventures…

  • Garance, I feel like we’re at the beginning of Grease talking about what we did this summer, I love this post ;) Sadly, I’ve been preoccupied with other things and have not stopped by the site in a while, but I did see you on PR and I haven’t watched the show in YEARS. Between you and Dita’s appearance, I’m back in love with the show.

I feel that there are no consolable words to say when you are going through such personal stuff. All I can say is that there are bigger and better things ahead of you and your fearless way about approaching life will get you to that point much quicker.

  • Hello Garance!

Tu as un excellent gout.

    Barbara
