My childhood dream was to make cartoons.
At the time, I didn’t realize what an immense amount of work was involved, but I used to imagine myself drawing little creatures and bringing them to life.
I still have a passion for animation today, whether it’s computer animation like Kung Fu Panda or Miyazaki’s manga.
The little film you’re about to see is the making of an animation that I actually haven’t seen – but it’s so well done that it made me want to cry.
So, go ahead! 2 minutes and 23 seconds of happiness!!!

Moi aussi j’ai failli pleurer, c’est tellement beau ce qu’ils font. On ne s’imagine pas tout le travail qu’il y a derrière, toute cette minutie. Je pense qu’on est touché parce que cela nous rappelle notre enfance et que la beauté d’un dessin animé ne peut être contestable. J’adore les animaux dans les dessins animés surtout les ours, je les trouve majestueux.

oh my gosh this advert made me cry every single time it was on over Christmas!
I love animation…my friend went to art college and I was at one of the yearly exhibitions and some of the artwork that other students had done was incredible…just wish i could draw :(

Miyazaki does anime (ie animated films) not comics/manga.

Je l’ai vu dans une émission l’autre fois, peut être aux infos je ne sais plus… j’en avais limite les larmes aux yeux tellement c’est beau ! et en 2’30 on se rend bien compte de la complexité et du nombre d’heures passées sur chaque dessin, chaque plan… un travail de dingue ! <3

It’s a beautiful ad, you must watch it! I live in London, where John Lewis is based so they were showing it on TV during Christmas. Hadn’t watch the making of and I can’t believe it was all made for real!!

C’est beau, tellement beau un homme qui travaille avec passion. Pourquoi notre société ne permet-elle pas à tous, du moins tous ceux qui le souhaitent, de vivre de leur passion? Pourquoi beaucoup de gens ne sont-ils pas à leur place dans leur travail? A quoi cela sert-il les ressources humaines et tout leur bla-bla-bla?

For the last few years in November I’ve been avidly waiting for the Xmas John Lewis Stores commercial to come out so as to be able enjoy it, to cry overwhelmed with emotion and to share it with my friends (although they may not pay much attention to it…). It’s not only the delicious animation, or the beautiful story… it’s also the music.
For the bear and the hare, Xmas 2013, it is Lilly Allen singing Somewhere only we know by Keane
For the 2012 commercial, called The Journey, it was Gabrielle Aplin singing The power of love by Frankie Goes to Hollywood

So happy to see there is still an appreciation for hand-drawn animation. The artist wearing an orange hat towards the end is Aaron Blaise, an incredibly talented artist and one of Disney’s finest animators.
