Studio Oscar Picks

All of the Oscar nominees for 2016 have been revealed!!

You can see the full list here but, let’s face it, there are some categories that we’re all a little more excited to see who the wins, the ones that everyone talks about….
And even though we haven’t all seen every movie, here is what everyone in the studio thinks (or at least hopes!) will win:

———————————

Neada:
Best Picture: The Revenant, hands down. Believe the hype.
Actor: Leo in “The Revenant” !!!! (Ok, I loved this movie!)
Actress: Cate Blanchett is a fellow Aussie and my ultimate girl crush.
Supporting Actor: Giving this one to Bale.
Supporting Actress: Kate Winslet. The year of Kate / Cate!
Directing: Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Basically, “The Revenant” is the “Titanic” of 2016.

Brie:
Best Picture: “The Big Short”  – kind of terrifying, knowing how Wall Street works, but completely amusing.
Actor: Matt Damon in “The Martian” – because I haven’t seen the others and he was funny.
Actress: Cate Blanchett in “Carol” – again, only film I saw, but so beautiful, she owned that role with a vengeance.
Supporting Actor: Christian Bale in “The Big Short” – as before, I do love Bale though.
Supporting Actress: This one’s a tie, I thought both were great. Rooney Mara and Kate Winslet.
Directing: “Mad Max: Fury Road” George Miller

Erik:
Best Picture: “Mad Max: Fury Road” – Only one I’ve seen, so yay!
Actor: Eddie Redmayne in “The Danish Girl” – Haven’t seen any, but he’s the cutest, so yay!
Actress: Cate Blanchett in “Carol” – Again, haven’t seen any, but she will always win my heart.
Supporting Actor: NO THANKS. PASS.
Supporting Actress: Kate Winslet in “Steve Jobs” – Titanic is my favorite movie.
Directing: “The Revenant” Alejandro G. Iñárritu – Haven’t seen it, but nobody should spend that much time in that harsh of an environment.

Elle:
Based on who I like generally…
Best Picture: “The Big Short”
Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio in “The Revenant”
Actress: Charlotte Rampling in “45 Years”
Supporting Actor: Christian Bale in “The Big Short”
Supporting Actress: Rachel McAdams in “Spotlight”
Directing: “The Big Short” Adam McKay

Emily:
Best Picture: The Big Short
Actor: Leo
Actress: Cate B.
Supporting Actor: Christian Bale
Supporting Actress: Kate Winslet
Directing: Alejandro Iñárritu

Amanda:
Best Picture: “The Revenant”
Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio in “The Revenant”
Actress: Brie Larson in “Room”
Supporting Actor: Mark Ruffalo in “Spotlight”

  • I really must see the Revenant. Everybody’s talking about it!
Is it possible not to like DiCaprio acting? :)

  • Yes, it is. I found out that many people dislike him as an actor and a human being. It’s unbelievable.

  • My personal favourite is The Martian but I really want Leo to get an Oscar. It would be big.

  • It’s hilarious to see “picks” by people who haven’t seen the films!! I hate to say it though — I suspect that the Academy has it’s own fair share of this “popularity contest” decision-making in the selection of the winners (and also for who gets nominated,…).

  • hahaha ! Erik !!! <3 <3

  • These are my picks:
    Best Picture: The Revenant
Best Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio, he’s been robbed too many times, not giving him the Oscar this year, for this film, would be ridiculous!
Best Actress: Charlotte Ramplig for 45 Years
Best Supporting actor: Tom Hardy for The Revenant (amazing actor)
Best Supporting actress: Rooney Mara or Kate Winslet
Best Directing: Alejandro G. Iñárritu, because I loved every film directed by him and The Revenant is perfect

  • Amanda à raison je pense.

Meilleur film: Mad Max (même si j’ai trouvé The Big Short génialissime)
Meilleur acteur: Léo (parce que c’est son année)
    Meilleur actrice: Brie Larson
    Meilleur réal: Alejandro
Meilleur acteur dans un second rôle: Silvester Stallone (même si pour moi c’est Christian Bale #TheBigShort # MovieOfTheYear)

  • I was hoping you’d say a few words about the fact that there are only white nominees. I fully realise this is not a political page but I’ve known Garance to speak up when she feels it needs to be done. If you’re gonna bring up the subject of the Oscars, this is something that has to be adressed, even if it is a side note.

Anyway, I’m anxious to see the Danish Girl, the Big Short and of course The Revenant. I hope it will finally get Leonardo his Oscar!

  • I’m a little ambivalent about my response but I will share it nonetheless… As a dark-skin person I understand the importance of getting representation in the big moments in order to break down walls and get the recognition that we all deserve. And yes it’s important for minorities of all sorts to get the same opportunities to share their perspectives and stories. However, I don’t feel it’s right to complain about there not being any black nominees unless there is an “black” actor/actress/director that deserved to get nominated based on his/her performance and wasn’t. There shouldn’t be slots allocated based on race, in my eyes selection should be colorblind, an equal plane field.
NOW THE BIG QUESTION IS, why there aren’t any oscar worthy performance from black/minorities. Is it just coincidence, or is it that minorities are not being offered oscar quality roles to perform. If this is the case, then this is what needs to be addressed. You need to be allowed into the race in order to be able to compete.

  • I did a quick googling on the issue and it seems the problem comes from the fact that the oscar electorate is too white male oriented. so it’s the traditional power gap issue, intentional or not, minorities voices are being left out because those in power are all from a few groups, so the other perspective is left out. It’s normal I think for all of us to gravitate towards what we know, and our tastes are formed based on how we were raised and what we’ve seen in life. Unfortunately, in the US we are too used to staying within our comfort zone, we only know what we know and like what we know. We are not exposed to a lot of diversity… as a result we select things that look like ourselves because it’s all we’ve known. I applause the academy plan to diversify it’s membership, but more importantly I think we as a culture need to start educating ourselves about “the other” and gain different perspectives, so our choices don’t reflect such a narrow point of view of life. It will help us to coexist in peace with each other and work together.

  • You’re totally right, Jessica! People shouldn’t receive oscars simply for being black. However there have been some oscar worthy performances out there, but perhaps that’s just my opinion (I certainly am no movie-expert). And the issue of people being allowed into the race is ofcourse a very important one, as is bringing diversity into the board. Although it’s quite painful to think that white males can’t recognize and acknowledge talent in non-whites.

Perhaps GD isn’t the right platform for this discussion after all. It just felt strange to me for a second, to read people happily discussing the nominees without addressing the issue.
