Dear yellow, in the meaning of colors, you inspire original thought and inquisitiveness. How lovely is that? In the meaning of my wardrobe, I find you nearly impossible to wear.

Maybe it comes from my mother, whose advice I take regularly, and who also strictly forgoes any shade of the enthusiastic hue. But, since it’s FINALLY spring, it seemed like the right moment to sort out the sunny shade for my wardrobe and put to rest any notions of jaundice induced outfits.

I love the immediate pop of life yellow gives, especially here on Colleen. You can’t help but feel warmer around someone wearing it. Garance warns to be careful of the “bumble-bee” look and, yet, somehow the black and yellow combination also really works.

But, if you’re not feeling so bold, might I recommend trying it with blue jeans? Okay, they may be my answer to the all tough “What do I wear this with?” question, but they are tried and true.

So, what do you think of yellow? Do you wear it happily?

  • It’s good to be brave sometimes – yellow and fuchsia!?! So cool.

  • such a wonderful jacket and color!

Parfais compromis!

  • I love Yellow ,and i agree that it is not an easy color to wear …it needs makeup…or a great face…or just to be young>>> but do you know that Yellow is the color of sunshine. It’s associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy.Yellow produces a warming effect, arouses cheerfulness, stimulates mental activity, and generates muscle energy. …so after all this you can see the yellow color differently???

  • I’ve seen so much yellow lately and I am loving it! This jacket that she’s wearing is so cute!

  • I would occasionally inject a pop of yellow into my otherwise neutral wardrobe if it didn’t make me look absolutely terrible. With my particular pale coloring, wearing it against my face makes me look like a corpse at best. Since I don’t plan on buying yellow pants anytime soon, my yellow iPhone is about the best I can do!

Yellow for spring is amazing colour! Would combine it with white)

  • I think a good “gateway” yellow piece is a scarf, it’s easier to mix into an outfit whether it’s jeans or a dress

I do not look good in yellow, especially near the face. I can wear it mixed in a print or pattern especially on my lower half but otherwise it doesn’t do any thing kind for my skin tone.

  • I simply adore it with the black! My mom told me to never wear yellow too – but you make it look wonderful!

the look you created is cooland warm in one and I really love bees : )

  • haha I love bees too – or at least the idea of them :)

  • I adore yellow in my garden but it’s a color that I’ve never thought looked good against my olive-y/yellow skin.
This look makes me think it’s time to try again!

With my pale red haired complexion, yellow leaves me looking a bit jaundiced, sallow and pale – maybe it sort of reflects back onto my face? I think art classes too may have prejudiced me – it’s association to madness and Van Gogh’s mental health decline, I sort of have a fear of it! Though yellow shoes (patent and round toed please) and handbags and kitchen appliances are all are good with me! Sarah

  • I’ve always loved wearing bright yellow! I don’t think most people can pull off pastel yellow (makes most of us look sickly), but a bright, vibrant yellow is great. I love wearing it with more modern, clean looks as a way to brighten them up!

  • J’aime beaucoup !!

  • Adore that yellow. Such a bright and happy colour

  • This bold and dramatic shade of yellow is quite strong for most women! I think it goes best with black and is for those with very dark hair! I wish I could pull it off!!

  • Can I please ask who is this model? I have seen her on La Garconne and she is utterly spectacular! Thank you.

  • Last year, in a charity shop, I found a Pierre Cardin yellow jacket 4 35 euros… Not kidding!! It’s made my whole summer last year and I feel it will the same this time.
Favorite outfit: dark denim jeans + light denim shirt + sunglasses + my wonderful amazing bright yellow jacket :-)
… so yellow the Sun could be jealous ;-)

  • NOOOO, I do not wear yellow! Mostly because I can’t figure out how to wear it! Doesn’t look right on me. It’s beautifully styled here though. :)

However, MUSTARD yellow… that I will wear. Not exactly bright and sunny though… le sigh.

  • Hello! Good morning from Central Europe!
Reading this article right after getting up made me smile. I remember myself being in a complicated relationship with yellow (and orange) ever since. I have always been balancing on the line between that happy and joyful side of these shades, and the fact that I just don’t feel comfortable wearing them.
It somehow eliminates the versatility of an item and looking like a shining sun has never been my target (positive minds looking like a shining sun, no offense).
However, I must admit, sometimes an inner bizarre persona wakes up and my mood is set on some extravaganza (happens approx once a year :D). But still, when such a mood pops up, I subconsciously seek for smaller items like handbags, accessories or playful socks. Last autumn, when rainy days became a routine, I bought myself a pair of wellingtons in yellow (yeah, that bizarre persona was awake).
P.S.: For those who have been reading The Sorrows of Young Werther by Goethe, you will definitely know that the yellow color was an irreplaceable part of his outfit!

    Regards!

  • Love love love yellow. Looks great in the summer and adds a pop of colour in winter.

The utiliy jacket is awesome and I love the entire look.

    Great stuff!

  • I adore yellow. It’s usually a tough color to incorporate to our wardrobes without getting all sorts of comments! So I’m happy to see it’s made a come back this Spring. Love how you were able to combine it with black and white without making it look “taxi-esque”. Best, Natalia

  • I love yellow! Especially if it is a warm yellow like this one. I have a shirt in this colour and I pair it with camel jeans and dark brown boots. Or the other way round: some yellow trousers with a camel shirt plus dark brown leather jacket and coloured sneakers – similar to the ones in the photo.

  • I loved it!
I’m posting looks from Los Angeles and accessories:

  • I wear yellow from time to time with black in winter as a pop of colour amongst all the black of winter . Positive comments when I do but even if it didn’t work so well I’d still wear it because I love it

Brie you have similar colouring to Colleen, yellow will suit you very much too

  • It’s funny but when I was in design school (for graphics) we learned in our color theory class that people associate yellow with cheapness, so you will see it used a lot in sale and discounts signs. But apparently no one really knows why. But that aside I think it is a fun color and wearable though in small does is probably best.

Happy coloured jacket in clean lines = winner: anytime.

I love yellow on myself and seeing it on others. People say there’s a shade of yellow for everyone, just as there’s a red, orange or brown for everyone.

With this bright yellow, I think marine an pull it off. If you feel pallid wearing it– and the model here isn’t particularly rosy herself yet still looks Pierette in her yellow, then wear a pink based blusher, or a bit of warming bronzer, or a bit of brown mascara, or a bright red lip and nothing else. I do the last thing with the red lip when I wear yellow, and it’s all good.

My favourite ways to wear that yellow as a top include: white jeans and black and white striped Breton top; dark blue jeans with striped T; grey jeans and lighter grey T; tan suede midi A-lime skirt or tan leather cuffed pants with honey suede T or bright red cotton T; with garnet or burgundy skinny jeans and olive sides flat ankle boots; olive jeans and black T; turquoise skinny jeans and black T; fuschia skinny jeans and grey T.

As my corduroy jeans, I’d swap tye colour combo around, and wear the yellow corduroy jeans with tops of the same aforementioned colours. And also as olive suede, flat ankle boots. I love bright yellow with olive suede.

I’ve worn it once with purple – and that always seems to be strong for others- perhaps due to our subconscious association of purple plus yellow being kept for royalty. I don’t wear it royally at all- just as my yellow corduroy jeans and a deep purple silk T: but it’s a lovely, deep contrast… And the colour combo of one of the local football teams- which again, seems to elicit strong reactions either way!

And I always carry a deep rust, suede bucket bag when I wear yellow on top or as jeans: it’s earthy and warm, and makes me think of custard tart.

I’m so sorry for the horrible typographical errors: I think I need to start wearing glasses when I type on my tiny iPhone: I didn’t see the mistakes even with the re-read.

Below is what my crazy paragraph about “marine” and “Pierette” was supposed to be:

“With this bright yellow, I think many can pull it off. If you feel pallid wearing it– and the model here isn’t particularly rosy herself, yet still looks pretty in her yellow…” is what I’d meant to originally type.

  • As an Asian and living in a tropical country, I’m used to seeing bright colors as clothing, shoes for people. And this outfit is my kind of casual Friday attire. I love the shoes!

  • Well, I’m more a grey/black/white/navy kind of girl but this season i’m really tempted by lots of yellow pieces, mostly from the Sandro collection. They’ve done really nice yellow bits!

I am pale with dark red hair. I wear yellow quite a bit. But then, I like the look of pale skin. I see no reason that i should try to look tan, and yellow makes my skin positively glow, and my cheeks to look rosy. I usually wear it with grey or with jeans. I would love to try wearing it with a purple. I always avoided wearing it with black because of the bee thing, but now I am asking myself; What is wrong with a bee?
