Sunday in Brooklyn

It’s funny, last week we were talking about copies, counterfeits, and pieces inspired by, you remember?
And then Sunday, I went to the magnificent Brooklyn Flea Market (awesome / beautiful / for sure go check it out) with my friend Delphine to find some stuff for my house. They sure did have tons of stuff for the house, but tons of clothes as well.
In the middle of all this awesome stuff was this little jacket, not really my style, but super pretty none the less, and the tag said G.FOX&CO.
Curious as I am, I asked the saleswoman where the brand is from and she explained…
It turns out that G.FOX&CO was a big department store in Connecticut. At the time, in the 50s and 60s, American department stores like Bergdorf Goodman in New York, Marshall Fields in Chicago and tons others would do what they are still doing today. They would send their buyers to see the collections in Paris, the capitaâââaaaaal of fashhhhhion.
The difference is that back then, they would buy the exclusive rights to certain collections they wanted, and then make everything in their factories back in the states and sell them with their brand name. And all that was perfectly legal.
This little overcoat is actually Dior, Dior New York.
What is funny is where they placed the Dior tag, you know, like a little hidden ?
I thought it was timely and interesting. I had already heard of the concept in The Beautiful Fall and in l’Irrégulière (fantastic books / if you like fashion, read ’em.) but I think it definitely resonates with what we were talking about last week.
Anyway, this flea market is up on the third floor of a former bank in Brooklyn, in the Skylight One Hanson space. It’s downright awesome and, despite how absolutely sublime the decor is, it isn’t expensive at all.
No seriously, check out these ceilings!

I’ve been wanting to go to the Brooklyn Flea for some time now. I had no idea it was housed in such a gorgeous building. I love the Christian Dior story…there’s always so much to learn at flea markets!

And I love markets, restaurants, shops, museums placed in old buildings born for different purposes (Like Orsay was a station for example… Or the Tate modern was a factory… Or I have this friend that made his new house of a church -not sacred anymore- from the 14th century in the Tuscany countryside… don’t tell you how amazing it is.. OK, I’m boring, I stop it here :D)
It’s really curious how the idea of intellectual property has changed in time… if you think that now they patent even animals and plants (!)
And Yes! I totally want to know what you bought!!
(I thought you would have bought the jacket too honestly… G. Fox… Garance Fox? Cool!)

C’est vraiment magnifique comme endroit. La première photo particulièrement, me fait penser à une bibliothèque comme j’en ai toujours rêvé, un peu comme la Bibliothèque Sainte Geneviève mais en plus “chaleureux”!

Trouve dans des thrift shops de Brooklyn et San Francisco: une jupe longue en soie Calvi Klein pour Saks (un autre grand magasin New Yorkais) et SURTOUT un trench Burberry pour Bloomingdales, a 25$. Incroyable non?

The first picture is very nice. The practice you describe is very common. There were actually different practices. The French (sometimes Italian) house could manufacture for the US store. I have a few jackets which say Lanvin for Bergdorf Goodman. The foreign house often manufactured in the US because there were taxes that made importing clothing prohibitive (this is how the US became a fashion country!). Sometimes, the foreign house sold the patterns to the US shops / manufacturer (most famous case is Lacoste by Izod, ironically called Izod by Lacoste for some time). In extreme cases, the US shop / manufacturer had a license and did whatever they want. It’s often easy to differentiate what is a licence and what is original work. For example, the JL logo by Lanvin has three J and three L when it is original work, and only two when it is a license. Even the design of the lady with child at Lanvin differs depending on whether this is original work or licence.
In any case, many Belgian houses and houses in Monaco used to copy design from Paris, without asking for permission! If I remember well, Delvaux used to make bags that look very similar (though not identical) to Hermès’s Kelly.

Ooh, 13 years in New York and I’ve never made it to the Brooklyn Flea. In fact, other than passing through on the way to the airport, I’ve probably only been in Broklyn a dozen times. Marvelous art museum there. Years ago when there still were flea markets on 6 th Ave around 25th Street, I scored a marvelous little alligator bag, lined in pale suede with a small attached coin purse. It’s hard to describe, but it opens like a hives lid when the bag is on it’s side. The handle was a bit dodgy, so t wrapped it on overlapping Hermes ribbon, a la Miu Miu! A treasue for $100!
This is a terrific post, Garance! Thanks for the tip about this amazing flea market (incredible architecture) and your story about G.FOX&CO. I had no idea that “knock offs” were legal and respectable at one time. The garment is stunning!

Ya, I took a peak at this market back in December. Its amazing though. I think we got there at 5 p.m. and stayed for two hours just perusing through all of its greatness. Walked away with some great boots and a vintage no name shell with the sweetest collar.
Flea markets are the best. I was floored by this one… And yes, the building’s decor is incredible… The food vendors downstairs also have some tasty treats.

Of course we want to know, Garance! :-) Nothing speaks about your style more than what you find at thrift stores and flea markets! There are no mannequins or ads to persuade you to pick that one shinning piece among all others – just you and your intuition. Can’t wait to see what you bought!

Je voulais te faire partager une petite trouvaille. Je ne sais pas si tu connais déjà le système de promouvoir un artiste, maintenant cela est possible dans le monde de la mode. En effet, grâce au site http://www.carnetdemode.com , à présent chaque mois on peut “sponsoriser” 4 créateurs. En pré-commandant, on assure un certain nombre d’articles produits et achetés au créateur. Le plus intéressant c’est qu’on a les vêtements en exclusivité, avec un rabais allant jusque -40% et on reçoit une partie des recettes des vêtements qu’on a “sponsorisé”! J’adore cette idée et les créations sont vraiment belles.

Oui t as touché juste! D´ailleurs Laurence Bénaim en parle très bien dans ses belles biographie de Yves Saint Laurent. Dans les années 60/70 avant l´invention du prêt-à-porter par Pierre Cardin et avant que la maison YSL se lance dans la même aventure avec Rive Gauche, les vrais gains de la maison se faisait davantage sur les contrats signés avec les grands magasins américain comme Bergdorf que sur la haute-couture.

J’adooore le Flea, et encore plus au printemps, qui il se tient à Fort Greene le samedi et le dimanche sous le pont de Brooklyn. Je deviens fan du vintage moi aussi. J’aime beaucoup chercher, le problème, ce sont les jours où la pêche est maigre, je me rattrape dans le neuf ou (pire) chez Zara et c’est terriblement frustrant !

One Hanson Place, where the Flea takes place in the winter used to be a Bank. You can see all the Teller counters still and in the basement is the Vault!
(I bought a great pair of shoes down there hahaa)

I loved this post. I grew up in southeastern Connecticut in the ’50s and ’60s and my New York born and raised mother would take my sister and me shopping at G.Fox in Hartford each fall and spring. It was an exciting trip for me to go to a “big” department store, one that seemed very sophisticated to me. The day also included lunch at the lovely restaurant on the 5th floor, with chocolate cake for desert. Thanks for evoking such sweet memories.

The Brooklyn Flea is a terrific market, and there are some good deals to be found, but on the whole it IS expensive and the clothing is VERY expensive.

I spent my last day in NY before returning back to Cape Town (SA) at the Flea in Brooklyn and came home SO inspired and with lighter bank balance. The crafts were creative, the space inspiring and the people interesting. (is it ok to say that I miss it?)

Hi Garance! thank you for the kind pictures of my Christian Dior suit. I meant to reply sooner alas i was shopping for new finds for a film project that i will be doing the costumes for.
As I mentioned, my pieces are curated from various cities across the United States that i shoot in, however this suit came from good ole NYC.
I wanted to let everyone know that the Dior suit was sold on Saturday! It was so timely, and the suit never stopped giving off its beautiful energy every Sunday that it hung there. It was a piece of art and personally, I didnt care if it sold and was sad to see it go. But it will be on the back of a beautiful Asian woman.
