Kate / New York

13 years ago by

And here’s Kate‘s city guide with all, no seriously, all of her favorite addresses. I think this is the longest city guide in the world, but New York is totally worth it as it’s a city you never stop discovering… Ok, let’s take a walk with Kate !

What your city’s philosophy ?

Like Sinatra sang: “If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.” NYC embraces talent, attracts greatness and rewards ambition. It doesn’t suffer fools.

And it has the most amazing street culture and style.

Tell me about your favorite shops…

Brooks Brothers (mens shirts, pajamas), Iris (shoes), Stella McCartney (everything), Steven Alan, Bergdorf Goodman (shoes), Tinsel Trading Company and Mood (fabric and trimmings for when I want to make things), Saint James (Breton striped shirts), Christian Louboutin/West Village (shoes), D Porthault (for the chicest towels on the planet; yes floral chintz towel can be chic with scalloped edges)! Honestly though, I really love to shop online, and on ebay, ebay, ebay is my total favorite!! I love a good deal.

John Derian (I could move-in today and just live there!). Kentshire has the most gorgeous antiques and estate jewelry. I like to shop for the home much more than clothing (since I have to shop for clothing so much for work as a stylist).

But also Kirna Zabete
De Vera – amazing antiques, jewelry, curiosities.
John Robshaw (showroom) – another place I want to live!
Agent Provacateur – for bathing suits.

And what about the vintage ?

There are so many but really the very BEST are Resurrection, What Goes Around Comes Around (you have to see their rental archives oooh lala), South Paw (by appointment only), Amarcord, Exquisite Costume, and again ebay ebay ebay…..

What is your neighboorhood of choice ?

Gramercy Park

Is there a cool fashion item you can buy only in your city ?

“New York City” tourist tshirts, like the one John Lennon wore in his famous portrait.

The super non-fashion place where you like to go is…

The Green Market Farmers Market, Union Square. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturday is the biggest market.

Your favorite beauty habits. How, and where ?

I get my hair cut once a year (twice if I’m feeling extravagant and very split-endy) by Chystoph Marten. He’s in Chlesea and can give a great “non styled/non cut” haircut. Very natural looking. My hair never looks “done.”

Soho Spa is lovely. I like getting a great foot message from my local manicurist. Honestly it’s cheap and wonderful.

Where is the best place to have a coffee and watch people go by ?

Sant Ambroeus in the west village (get a cafe table outside for the best people watching) and Taralucci e Vino has the best cappuccino in NYC. In summertime Bar Pitti is the most fun dining al fresco and great to people watch all ages, very fashionable and casual and amazing food!!! You’ll see celebrities in jeans and tshirts. But I go for the Burrata. Ask for the Insalata Pitti (it’s not on the menu) and the Empolese pasta.

What are the things that you HAVE to eat in NYC ? Where do you find them ?

Pizza! Motorino, Pulinos, Otto, or Rays Pizza on West 11th St for a real NYC slice.
Bagels! Russ and Daughters, 71 Irving Cafe.
The Gnudi at The Spotted Pig.
Crepe Cake from Lady M Bakery.

What is the very touristy place that you still love to go to sometimes ?

Ice Skating at Wolman Rink in Central Park.

What is the best old and chic restaurant ?

Bemelman’s Bar at the Carlysle Hotel (catch Woody Allen perform Jazz on Monday nights), Indochine, Rauoles, The Four Seasons, Cafe Szabarsky at Neue Gallerie.

What is the new super cool restaurant ?

All right… You’re ready ? Kate’s list is super, super, super long. Which doesn’t surprise me much as New York is really a place where people eat out all the time !

Otto (NDLG :Also one of my favorites. We live so close so I go there all the time with Scott!)
Cascabel Tacos 2nd ave @ 80th
The Breslin
Back Forty
Odeon
Mermaid Inn, 96 2nd Ave
Indochine
Nobu
Il Buco (Sooooooooooooo romantic and delicious)
Smith + Mills
La Esquina
Cookshop
Mercer Kitchen
Cafe Cluny
Barrio Chino (Orchard + Broome)
Little Giant
Freemans
Del Anima
Blue Ribbon Sushi
Gramercy Tavern
Union Square Cafe
Cafe Mogador
Bar Bossa (Elizabeth St)
The Spotted Pig

A night in New York… What should I do ?

Have oysters at Waverly Inn, then dancing at Boom Boom Room (am I still aloud to call it that??) and Don Hills. Watch the sunrise at the foot of the Queensboro bridge (like in “Manhattan.”)

What is the totally overrated place ?

I’m wary of the “new hot” places (you’ll know it’s new and hot bc you can only get a reservation at 5pm or 11:30pm for the next 6 months, even if you see empty tables there – grrr!!!) I try to stick to my favorites so I love everywhere I go! In NYC it pays to be a regular.

Tell me about your ideal day in New York.

Walking with my fiance, Chris, and my dog, Bear, for hours and hours from Gramercy Park, West Village, East village, Lower East side, maybe even walking over the Brooklyn Bridge and stopping for bites and coffees all along the way. Then cooking a huge dinner with all local seasonal ingredients from the farmers market and having friends over. Oh, and I would have snagged some cool vintage pieces along the way. And I wasn’t even really shopping!!! Then catching Asssssssscat at Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre for some improv comedy (where you’ll definitely see performers from Saturday Night Live.)

How do you go around the city ?

By foot as much as possible (time permitting), by taxi (high heels necessity), by bike, (weather permitting), by subway. We keep a car in a garage and only use that for when we leave the city. Occasionally for work I have a car/driver and that is super luxe let me tell you!!
