audra-red-head

10 years ago by

I know – same as you: that girl in the picture makes me immediately want to be her, cruising on the street in my very good wool turtleneck, eyes closed like I was just leaving a very good antigravity yoga class.

Which makes me think (because anything would make me think of myself, obviously):
I’ve always been told that I have a redhead skin tone, because I have a ton of freckles and I get red very, very easily.
It’s BS: It doesn’t make my skin a redhead’s skin at all, but people (including me) are fast to jump to conclusions.
Conclusions like: maybe I’d look great if my hair was a lighter color ?

Aaaaaah, the permanent unfinished business of bettering yourself, uh.

Also, Kim Kardashian went blonde and I thought it looked pretty good. Didn’t you? Am I the only one?

And look – I know it’s a lot of work to go lighter hair color-wise. There is the money you have to put into it, the time, the dedication. And the roots, arrrgh, the @&$ing roots. And also you destroy your hair, with hair color, don’t you? It’s like a car, or a cat, or a blog, if you’d really think about it, you’d never get one.

But the truth is, I’ve been looking at a lot of people around me and I have to say I see A LOT of people with colored hair! Even Alec Baldwin !
Like, a lot! And it looks good on most of them!

So, today, I wanted to ask these people: Is it that hard? How do you deal with it? Can I pull it off?

PS : The wonderful Audra in the picture seems to me like a natural strawberry blonde (dream hair color !!!) and is wearing a wonderful sweater by Nili Lotan.

  • Coucou,

    C’est vraiment très joli :)

  • Yeah, going blonde is a tricky business, and yes Kim Kardashian looks surprisingly good in blonde. Maybe that’s why Kanye finally asked her to marry him, who knows!
The key is to take really good care of your hair. If you have the mean (aka the money), then go for it!!

PS: Are you taking you inspiration from Alec Balwin now?? Haha!

  • i have never dyed my hair: i’ll stick to its natural chestnut colour :)

  • I dyed my hair for years. I got tired of all the money I was spending, the roots and the damage it was doing to my hair. Plus, I was dyeing it red (from dark brown) so I would watch as it washed out down the drain so quickly.

One day, I went to my hairdresser asking her to dye it my natural colour and it turned out dark grey! She re-dyed my hair that week, which made my hair so dry–it was completely fried and the colour was way too dark.

A few months later I got it re-dyed and have not touched it since. No more colouring for me! It’s not worth it!

  • I have been vetting ombre highlights since last November and it is high maintenance: I go every 2 months to get touched up so the blonde bits don’t get too brassy. You have to take care of the hair with purple shampoo and not too much heat styling, and use a good clear hair oil. Also I am Asian so my hair is strong textured and it can turn orange from the bleach.

  • No thanks, I like myself just the way I am.

  • I think the dark hair looks great on you Garance, maybe a few shades lighter too. But I wouldn’t go full on redhead, I think it would be horrible to maintain.

I have dark brown hair and always used to dye it somewhat the same colour (or a bit darker to contrast my blue eyes) to give it a bit of oompf and to cover those stray grey hairs (I’m 27…), but I got tired of it. It’s hard to get the right nuance and then your standing in an elevator in that horrible fluo light and realise it’s not so well covered as you thought. And yes the roots, but also the ends aren’t too happy about getting dyed over and over again. So when I chopped it off again early this year I saw it as a nice chance to get my natural colour back, and stop with the hassle, even if that means there’s a bit of grey in there somewhere (denotes wisdom amirite?!).

  • She’s gorgeous, love her hair color.

  • The color of the sweater with her hair and skin is beautiful, too.

It can feel silly (it’s fun that way!) but you might try on a few wigs in lighter colors, to get a better idea of how different shades look on you. If you go to a good shop you should be able to see very realistic colors!

  • I suggest starting with highlights rather than ‘single-process’ color, and ask for ones that will look good even if/while they’re growing out. I have light brown hair (with more and more gray) and I’ve been getting blonde highlights for years. Thank God for Sarah Jessica Parker for making it ok to walk around with roots… After a bunch of anxiety lately about my ponytail color being different from my roots, I saw this photo on Scott’s blog and thought “yes, if she has it, I can too” :) http://www.thesartorialist.com/photos/on-the-street-rue-de-lecole-de-medecine-paris-7/

  • I also like Kim Kardashian blonde!! :-) I’m brown and i’m ok.
    kiss!
    Passa a trovarmi VeryFP

You are incredibly beautiful on your own, and hair color will enhance and accent that, but not define you. I am a natural brunette- very dark, and I am a hairstylist. My hair doesn’t budge much from it’s natural because I feel unauthentic with anything too light or too contrived, but with this said- what I tell my clients is that it’s always better to find a way to create dimension or something fun without taking your color so far in an opposite direction that it’s too much maintenance. Blonde is fun, and if you see the right person they won’t make you brassy, and the maintenance- as strange as it may seem- won’t be too daunting. The question to ask yourself if you go red is: Will my eye brows need to colored? (eyebrows grow faster than you think, and roots on eyebrows is less than attractive), how about the rest of my body hair? Sounds weird, but at least from where I stand I’m not a fan of standing in the light and seeing a completely different color on my head than what’s on my arms or on my face.

As long as you’re seeing a skilled stylist you can’t go wrong.

  • I love how you just assume that she does yoga, but I’m willing to bet that she does!
    Your Friend, Jess

  • That’s such a beautiful picture! Her expression, devine! I get my hair colored with Aveda colors, less nasty chemicals and they don’t destroy your hair as much and you never look like you wear a “color helmet”, the look is very natural! xxx

  • I thought you looked so beautiful in the “le chop” video that my first reaction is why mess with perfection? That said, you seem to be able to carry off anything so why not? If our 20s and 30s are for experimentation, then maybe our 40s and 50s are about cementing our comfort in our own skin.

  • so natural! love this pict!

  • Magnifique photo, magnifique fille.

  • Have you thought about a few accent highlights just around the front for your hair (the longest part)? You could keep the highlighted pieces toned on the darker side for a more tone-on-tone effect. They will gradually lighten up more on their own over time, as you shampoo, and you won’t have to worry about roots because this is a very low-maintenance look.

  • That is my natural hair color- strawberry blond. I can’t tell you how much I admire dark hair! Pretty much the opposite of my natural coloring is what I find extra compelling and beautiful. It’s so appealing because it’s so unattainable.

The more I read about you and your skin, the more I feel like you are a older french awesome version of me who got into the world of fashion and lives my dreams…ok that sounds to me like you are my “idol” or something like that, weird word, but I want to tell you that you are amazing the way you are and just be yourself and keep your hair color because you are perfect
Best wishes from my fellings an thoughts

  • Going lighter is a tricky business indeed, but I think you could definitely pull it off!

  • Don’t do it! You’re loosing your mind. Step back. Feed the homeless for a day. Recenter.

  • So funny that you just posted this– I have been wanting a change w/ my hair for a while, and wasn’t sure if I should go for a bob or for color. I got some highlights put in and I’m loving it! While the difference isn’t that drastic and looks pretty natural, I am loving the change– I needed something new, and am feeling great! I say go for it– it’s just hair!

  • so… if you consider going ‘light’, why not stop dying your hair and accept the gradual greying process? that would look so chique…

  • First of all: I don’t think Kim looks better with blonde hair. I think she just looks like a kind of exotic Beyonce wannabe. And about your hair… I think you look fantastic with your pale skin and your dark hair. The contrast is beautiful! I dye my hair because my natural hair is almost grey since I was 25. A tragedy, I know. And not, it’s not a silver beautiful grey shade. It was plain grey almost white that made me look like I was older and grumpier. I love changing and I love colouring, but it’s a life sentence. You have to retouch it every month if you want to look really polished! And Kerastase has to become your best friend!!!

  • Elizabeth October, 29 2013, 11:47 / Reply

Single process is a lot of maintenance, and it need to be very well done or the colour overlaps and is uneven. Highlights are less burdensome, every three months rather than monthly, and you can flex the colours more. I had my (dark blonde) hair red for about 5 years and I warn you that red is the most unstable dye colour so it fades and you are constantly recolouring the whole lot which does the condition no favours. If you do decide to colour I highly recommend the Philip Kingsley elasticiser pre-conditioner.

I once asked my wonderful colourist (of 20 years) whether I should ever go back to my natural colour. She said that the best thing about my natural colour is that it is a very good base colour for highlights, which I believe is diplomatic for “no, never” . I have been colouring my hair since I was 14 (1978) & as long as there are money & peroxide in the world, I don’t intend to stop.

    A prestu

  • at the end of the day…it’s hair color….you can always go back to what you have now…why not try…i am naturally very dark….went platinum years ago just to try….hated it…but now i know. i think you look beautiful in dark hair…and i happen to love the contrast between the skin and dark…added red lips!!!! but if we don’t try new things…we’ll never know…..lifes too short…GO FOR IT!!!! xoxoxo p.s. beautiful picture.

  • Garance, my hair used to be as lusciously dark as yours(I’m old now and going grey; I feel I’ve earned it). In the 1980s I decided to have a colour, this meant bleach, wash regularly and condition, then have the colour on. Three weeks later I shaved my head. It took months to get my hair and scalp back into decent condition.

When it grew back well I suddenly felt better, more myself. I know treatments have improved(or at least I hope they have…) yet everyone I know who’s tried to colour dark hair has regretted it, too much work.

It’s nice to dream about lovely straight blonde locks(I do) yet it might be even better to have your own thick dark waves.

  • Do it!! And leave the roots dark so there is hardly any maintenance.. you can lighten it with a highlighter and shampoo with a blue or violet shampoo to avoid it going orange. Hair grows out so it’s not a huge commitment. My hair is exactly the color of yours and I have a light brown with blonde ends and I color it every 6 months.

  • It’s hard. But what isn’t in life ? Just DO IT.
    But:
Don’t go too blonde in the beginning. (You can’t go back easily. You can’t go back!)
NEVER never ever think caring and pampering dyed hair is unnecessary and only for girly girls.
    DON’T trust your hairdresser 100 %.
Maybe I am overreacting because my hair and me had a tough time the last year… ;-) anyway it’s worth it.

  • I did it yesterday. Unforced. Hazelnut turned out red-ish… Help me. Anyone?

  • I’m at the salon every three weeks on the dot. I schedule trips around my hair appointments. I am a brunette but 90% gray (have been since age 42). Went red a year ago & love it. I’m too young to be gray so I make the sacrifice of time. We use permanent color just on the roots and a gloss (sometimes color, sometimes clear) on the rest and add just a few highlights every six months. It looks very healthy.

    Couleur Spleen.

I used to color my hair every 3 months, until it started getting a little high maintenance for my taste. I used to be a strawberry blonde – and went full redhead and it has suited me well for years. However, I started to notice gray hair in the roots…and I mean gray. So much gray. And I made the decision: pop in some lowlights and let nature do the rest. I don’t mind being a full gray 27-year-old. Now it’s kind of an ombre situation with gray fading into red. We shall see how this story develops.

    Bonjour Garance,

  • It looks good on almost everyone….Alex Baldwin not so much ;-)

  • I do it for years. I’m natural brunette, but I dye it blonde and I like it very much. It requires nourshing ofcourse, but again it is not to hard or time consuming once you get used to it. And I honestly like it. I do it in a hair saloon for the last 12 yrs and my hairdresser’s always mixing colours for me.

  • I’ve been coloring my hair since I was 13. It all started with 2 blonde highlights…it was the 90′ and bold highlights were IT. My hair has been red and blue and green and bright pink, and all the colors inbetween, not to mention WHITE! I shaved it all off after white. Now I keep it a shade lighter than my own natural brownish hair, coloring it every 1,5 months or so. I get highlights evry 5 or 6 month.
I do not look at it as much trouble or work.

What makes you so ‘searchy’ Garance… the hair is not it I think, you have un charme fou… so whatever you do, just feel good, resist nothing ? Oh so Eckhart Tolle, pardonnez-moi. Baci !!

    http://bows-and-girls.blogspot.fr/

  • My hair is medium brown and I use henna to make it darker (it looks great and it doesn’t destroy your hair), but after I saw Kim Kardashian’s new hair I wanna be blonde hahah!! ;))

  • Ahhh we always want what we dont have.
This was my natural colour as a young woman (teens) i wanted to be dark like you Garance, i spent my 20’s dying it blonder, then in my 30’s i embraced my natural colour (darker light brown) and i learned to love it.
Now in my 40’s i have grey coming through and i have to dye it.

Love the hair you have, its beautiful, (gorgeous short BTW), it was made for your skin type.
Us women need to stop being so hard on ourselves.
    Lisa

  • You know what, I say do it. I chopped my hair like yours maybe 2 years ago now, and have always wanted to try going blonde (my hair is a touch lighter then your natural colour) and finally a couple of months ago I decided to take the plunge. I am not fully blonde yet as it’s a process, (my hairdresser didn’t want to ruin my hair, so I am going back for my last session in a few wks.) I say do it now, your hair is short, have fun, you have very little to ruin right now. You can always just cut it short again to make it healthy. It is not like you are dying a head of long hair. I am taking the plunge because frankly, I have been curious all of my life what I would look and feel like as a blonde.

  • I use red henna on my hair. Really cheap, I can do it myself and super easy to touch up the roots. Bonus, I add a little almond oil to it and so it actually conditions my hair! A warning though, if you’ve chemically colored your hair you definitely have to do a test strip – it can interact with the chemicals and do bad bad things.

Going lighter doesn’t have to mean blond. I’m lighter than my natural hair color (I’m black), but its only a brownish color. When I did it everyone told me how much younger I looked. It depends. I feel that as you age your hair color should gradually get lighter. Though its a LONG way off, I’m basically preparing myself for the pure white head of hair that my mother has.

  • I have the same colour hair as Audra (naturally strawberry blonde), and its the only shade of hair colour that suits me. Something about the strawberry blonde skin tone looks strange with darker hair, or with lighter. I’d say stick to your natural colour! One’s natural colour always looks the best!

  • I’m blond only for a month, but ever since I cut my hair short 2 years ago I was thinking about doing it a lot. Now, I’m happy. The color is beautiful, although the first time it was a little bit yellowish, so I went back the next day for repairs :)))

I look younger!!! Yes, it’s important when you are 35+ and my wrinkles are somehow invisible now.

I’m still looking for the perfect lipstick, because colors that look good on you are now different, this goes for the clothing as well.

And lastly, my totally black roots are not so visible as I though they will be, so maintenance once per month is enough.

Go for it! If you didn’t like it, it’s super easy to go back to dark hair…

  • I like what kris said! Life is to short, so just go for it! I have a pretty okay blond hair color by nature and friends are always surprised that I dare to mess so much with it, but one who likes clothes and style as much as many of us do around here (ie: your fab blog)… Well, we do get really curious and want to see how we’d look in a dramatically different color. You – as a brunette, are in luck as you can always find a colorist who can take you pretty close back to what you had origionally. For us natural blonds to revert back to blond from some wild dusky rose color to our natural shade is a nearly impossible feat. Though I really like your look as it is in it’s natural state, i can totally picture you as a platinum blonde… Especially with the cool do that you have now!

  • I dyed my hair blonde for 15 years. (And loved it – the beach babe thing mostly). As a 19 year old it was fun! As a 35 year old with two kids it was tiresome. It cost more time and money than I had. I also felt like as I got older to look ‘classy’ it had to be in amazing condition, which it wasn’t, it was fried!!! So, I grew it out and with the balayage trend it was OK. Then I cut it off. I did try to get a colourist to dye it my natural colour a few times but it always looked terrible – so hard to get right. Anyway, I’ve been natural for 18 months and get so many compliments on how great my colour is – who knew?? My hair is in so much better condition, it feels thicker and healthier. I’m lucky not a grey in sight- yet – but am thinking I may just embrace them when they come (if I’m brave enough!) x

  • The best look for hair is healthy hair. The color and tone of your skin and the color of your hair is a result of the same factors-mostly melanine, and is in coordination. Unless you are going for a statement, which fashionwise is reasonable, the color of your hair should not vary to much from the natural. Yes, Kim Kardashian looks good as a blonde, even though she is a dark brunete, but it is mostly because of a high media spin where we are being bombarded with this image of a dark skinned (plestered in bronzer) blond bombshell. Just my two p :)

Garance, you looked beautiful with your long hair, as well as now with your shorter hair, I must admit I fell in love with your haircut in your lovely video, but…

    why so much trying??

Be beautiful as you are, don´t try to be… I don´t know…but I hope neither Kardiashian nor Baldwin.

We all love you as you are, don´t try to be other.

    Kisses from Spain.

    Bonjour,

  • Don’t do it. Your hair is so nice right now! bleaching it will make it really dry. Or, if you really want to try, go ahead now that it’s quite short, it’ll grow back quickly. but I’d say no, just because for the first time in like seven years I have my own color and it feels AMAZING! :)

I sometimes color my hair myself with semi-permanent color, to cover the few grays, mostly. I tried permanent color for the first time, in a shade lighter than my medium-brown, and now I can see the roots. How do you cover the roots? I have been searching for a tutorial or advice, but I am really befuddled. I cannot afford to go to a salon every two or three months (I get my hair cut only once a year). I wanted to move another shade lighter, since lighter hair color looks softer as one gets older. Highlights? The first time OK, but how do you keep it up?

  • I’d been highlighting my dark blonde hair for so long (15+ years) and wanted a change and to save some money so I grew it out this year at the age of 38. I felt my light blonde highlights washed me out during the winter months too. And despite that I could stretch my appointments out eight to twelve weeks, it was damaging. My hair was never shiny and was weak and brittle. I’ve grown to like my natural colour and it’s not as dark as I remembered. It has quite a red tone to it actually which I was thinking of enhancing with some panels of strawberry blonde just like the model pictured. I’ve been having trouble describing the shade to stylists so this will help

Always said that I had been coloring my hair too long to know what my natural colour looked like and never wanted to meet that colour.
Well SURPRISE! After years of going lighter I decided to ombré. My colorist suggested using my own cooler as the dark at the top. Now I love it so much they I’m growing out my ombré and will only have my own colour. My hair is healthy and shiny and a lovely golden dark blonde. By the way I’m 42 and I swim at the gym every day. My life is now simpler, no more frantic “root”emergencies and planning a life around hair appointments. I am all for helping Mother Nature along and for halting Father Time’s passage but there is a lot to be said for NOT letting your maintenance schedule become your life schedule!

  • It’s not that hard to go light! But warning…usually it takes a few tries to get a nice light shade. I rarely get it from the first try, and if I do, I always get a nicer color when I recolor too. I would try it now when your hair is short!
P.S Not that damaging if you remember to do a hair treatment/mask every few days!

  • Bonsoir Garance~!

Don’t know how long you’ll be in L.A. (where I live too), but if you want the name of a superb salon for anything hair, it’s called Frederick Fekaii salon in Hollywood. http://www.fekkai.com/Article-Salons-Melroseplace/article-salons-melroseplace,default,pg.html

    I have had my hair colored, cut, and also have a facial there numerous times. It is a fantastic salon. He is French by the way, and a delightful man. He has a book out on beauty and style, which is fabulous! I hope you will write one soon Garance!!! Anyway, I wouldn’t go blonde if I were you, but perhaps a little black cherry color added???? Whoops that link didn ‘t take—maybe this one will work;

  • I have a simple solution. I look very much like my mother and I definitely have my mother’s hair. She turned grey when she was about 27, so I’m pretty sure it will be my case also. Then I’ll have a lot of time to try different colors. And I guess it’s much easier to dye grey hair than dark brown ones.

  • Tellement cool ! On aurait dit une pub ! Très belle photo !

  • I went red once. It was by accident though. My sister and I decided to dye my hair blonde (i have naturally average warm brown hair) and it went blond and it was fun for a bit but it didn’t really look right so we decided to dye it back and guess what it went ginger, like the sort of fiery orange almost. So I thought I will never leave my house ever again. But then I thought about it and decided it wasn’t too bad. It wasn’t by any means natural – I have dark eyebrows and dark eyes – but it was cool. Like Julia Roberts in ‘Pretty Woman’ kind of cool. Everyone else liked it too and my hair got it’s own life. So I stayed like this buying bright ginger hair colour for about 3 years. Eventually I decided to grow up and went back to my normal brown hair but I definitely didn’t regretbeing a rehead for a while. Even a fake one for that matter haha

  • I’m actually going lighter this weekend– very natural ombre works for me…and roots look good. Kind of like Caroline Blomst.

  • I’m fair-skinned, hazel-eyed and was blond as a child, but every time I’ve tried to go lighter than my medium brown it looks too red for my taste. The saving grace came with getting some gray hair. Now I use a semi-permanent color in light brown and as it washes out it looks like I have subtle highlights. Even my stylist asked me about it. And no roots!

  • Beautiful girl, stunning photo, all-around amazing.
