I never would have thought I’d say this one day, but I guess there’s a time for everything…
For my recent trip to Cannes, I hired a stylist.
I know, so weird.

I was invited to the Cannes Film Festival by L’Oréal Paris, and I quickly learned that my trip would involve walking the red carpet twice. Oooof. Red carpet? Photos? Clothes? Argh.

garance dore l'óreal cannes film festival 2015 photos

My agent, Delphine, who I’ve been working with for years, and who’s seen me struggle with red carpet outfits more than once, said to me:
“Just get a stylist! I work with Sarah Slutsky, who works with Emma Watson – she’s great, I’ll organize a lunch for you two, don’t say no – you’ll meet her and we’ll see.”

The thing is, I’m the one who used to say: “Pffff, actresses can’t take any credit, it’s not really their style – they all have stylists!!!”
But that was then. Before I realized how much work it was to actually get dressed for the red carpet…

1/ When you’re not a size zero, the size you need to be for fashion houses to be willing to kindly lend you a dress.

2/ When you don’t have hours to spend scouring style.com for an outfit. And the jewelry to go with it. And the shoes.

3/ When you don’t have hours to spend calling, borrowing, receiving, sorting, and organizing the pile of outfits you’re going to have to try on to find one that works. Yes, it is a job.

And I’m not even close to being scrutinized to the point of someone like Julianne Moore or Charlize Theron (or Sophie Marceau hahaha). So, sorry, dear actresses. I so get it now.

garance dore l'óreal cannes film festival 2015 photos

But no matter what I do*, no matter what I allow myself to**, what I think*** or what I imagine****, I’ve been to plenty of galas and red carpets without the help of a stylist, and honestly it was not fun at all.

Let’s just say I’m fairly good at daytime outfits, but evenings and galas just really aren’t my thing.

[Diane Kruger side note: Apparently Diane Kruger chooses her own outfits. And she has one of the best styles on the red carpet. And she’s a great actress, with a fantastic career, and I have the impression she’s a really nice person, and her boyfriend seems AMAZING, and obviously, she’s gorgeous. I don’t know, i don’t knooooow…]

garance dore l'óreal cannes film festival 2015 photos

So anyway, the lunch gets scheduled, I meet Sarah, and we click. I like her right away – she’s very sweet, and she’s not your typical stylist (she also works with new technologies – I’ll tell you more about that soon – it’s interesting), and she’s also very brave, since she didn’t raise an eyebrow when I made my announcement : I’m not Emma Watson. Like she didn’t already know, haha.
And she took the information very graciously.
She’s not a fashion victim, she’s not condescending, and I liked her right away.

[Condescending side note: not complaining, but working in fashion with a normal body means you often hear things like: “Your body is beautiful, you look like a real woman! You should celebrate it!” Translation: “She’s obese. Someone help!” You have to be strong to resist the pressure to be skinny when you’re in fashion.]

In spite of it all, I still hesitate. I’m very resistant. Even though going to see a psychologist  is no harder for me than going to get my nails done, having someone help me dress seems like something out of a world I’m not a part of.

Hmm, maybe I should see a shrink to discuss my stylist issues :)

garance dore l'óreal cannes film festival 2015 photos

Long story short, Sarah and I start working. I send her a Pinterest board with all the things I like, and she responds with a Pinterest board of all the things she has in mind for me, and a few days later, like magic, there are about fifty dresses outfits, shoes, and rivers of diamonds (ok, I’m exaggerating a little) that materialize right before my eyes at the Studio.

Le travail de pro ;)

Obviously, it freaks me out to try anything on. I imagine the scene. Sarah trying to get me to fit into dresses that are too small for me, me excusing myself for being me. Sarah deciding to break up with me right there, saying: “Garance, this just won’t work. 10 days of juice fasting or I’m out.”

garance dore l'óreal cannes film festival 2015 photos

But oh well, you got to do what you got to do. Be brave. I call all the angels of confidence I can think of, Kim Kardashian included.

I put on the first dress, and it zips up without a problem. WHAT? Yep. Sarah actually found dresses for me that were not size zero. Wow, cool. So I keep trying them on. Delphine is there. Emily is there. Some of them don’t look very good on me at all, and it’s interesting, because I can see Sarah learning and understanding what is most flattering for my body. It’s like revelation exercise.

chris norton garance dore l'óreal cannes film festival 2015 photos

We set aside a few options – and then suddenly, I try on a long, black dress, and I see Delphine’s eyes light up: “Wooooooow!!!”

It’s a black Jill Stuart dress that I never would have imagined I could wear. That’s also part of the work of being a stylist. Questioning what a person thinks about themselves and pushing them toward a new perspective.

[Working world side note: This all sounds magical said like that. But to get to this point, Sarah scoured ALL the shows on style.com(can you imagine?) and then she spent hours with fashion houses to see what they had and what they could lend us (in my size) and then she (and her assistant) spent hours going to pick up pounds and pounds of packages. Being a stylist is serious work – it’s not easy at all.]

Anyway, enough details. I try on a second outfit with a great Rosie Assoulin skirt, Sarah shows me all the tips and tricks of a real stylist for stars, from wearing Spanks to getting your clothes tailored to widening your shoes to be more comfortable to fashion tape (scotch tape for clothes) – and I say wow, I think Sarah’s really going to make something of me!

garance dore l'óreal cannes film festival 2015 photos

A few days later, we have an appointment with a seamstress who tailors everything perfectly, bringing things in where needed, and loosening in all the right places.

Then we try on jewelry, perfectly selected to go with my outfits. It’s beautiful!!!

So I have my two outfits, plus a few daytime options because Sarah isn’t the type to let me leave without having everything planned out. She even tells me she’s going to make me some PDFs so I’ll remember everything, and that’s when I look at her like she’s an alien: “do you think I’m completely out of it?”

A few days later, 5 minutes before I’m supposed to go to the red carpet, all made up like a star thanks to L’Oréal, with my hair done like a star thanks to Jacques Dessange, sweating and totally stressed out trying to remember what goes with what and how, I find myself scrolling through Sarah’s PDFs like my life depends on it.
So I have official proof that yes, I’m completely out of it.

And once again, Sarah knows exactly what she’s doing.

Cannes goes fantastically well. I mean, as well as Cannes can go. As you saw in the Pardon My French we filmed there a few years ago, going to Cannes is a look behind the scenes, and behind the scenes is… well, it’s a post I’ll have to save for next time.

In the meantime, I walked up some stairs with a red carpet on it, and I was dressed.

That’s what counts, right?

In general, I tell myself I’ll figure it out on my own, I wait until the last minute, and then don’t find anything.

** I’m not going to do a whole therapist session for you (well, maybe I will in an upcoming post) but there are certain things that are ingrained in us and for me, getting a stylist is engraved in the category: “but Garance, who do you think you are!? You’re not actually going to get a stylist!” But for that, my agent, Delphine, and Emily, who works with me, are great. They pushed me to go for it!

*** I think dressing yourself shouldn’t be such a hassle. I fantasize about what Cannes was like in the 60s and 70s.

**** I always imagine I’m going to pull the perfect outfit out of my magic hat at the last minute, and it never happens. Never!

Ça me fait hyper plaisir !!!

  • You getting more gorgeous as the years go by

Magnifique!

Absolutely stunning! It was wonderful to read about the entire process. Thanks for your honesty. I think it’s wonderful that you are so in touch with yourself and so real, therefore relatable. Thank you!

  • Thank you. I think I’ll always be. I’m SO imperfect, there is no way I can let all of this drive me crazy – actually, each time I discover more of the glamour, it makes me crave more of the normal life!

As a woman that many of us see as a style icon (WWGW? What Would Garance Wear?), you must have felt nervous about hiring a stylist. But wow! It was all worth it for that spectacular black Jill Stuart dress. I know you just had a big birthday and I don’t think you could have pulled that dress off had you been 5 or 10 years younger. It requires the confidence of a Woman, capital W! You and Chris had to have been the most glamorous couple on the red carpet. That last photo….swoon. Dreams do come true! Bisous!

  • Ow, this is too nice!!! xoxoxoxox to you

  • You look so happy and I am happy that you finally found your match in every way!!

First of all… WOWzer… kid ya look B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L.

The black dress fits you like a glove, and that slit with that “thing” going across… what’s that? Talk about drawing the eye to the leg. I love that even though it’s a VERY high slit, ok not Angelina Jolie high but high, it’s still classy, elegant and overall–sophisticated.

And this guy of yours– He’s dashing.

    (jaw dropped).

  • Tres belle! And, as a personal stylist myself, it was a pleasure to read your experience!

  • Amazing all around. You look absolutely incredible. The dress is just so perfect. And your hair! Elegant and beautiful and feminine. But strong, too. And the new man. Wow. I think you just re-defined winning.

  • Here are my lessons: I was right to hire landscaper and not pretend I’m Martha Stewart and can design and maintain my garden (as in you hiring stylist). In fact, just follow your instinct, you know when it’s right to bring in the big guns and get some hired help who are experts. Oh and spanx are good for big occasions. The necklace is fabulous, I’d love to see a closer photo. You are making 40 look good, so encouraging (I’m late 30s) and, I like your new preppy/glam (too lazy to describe well) looks so much better than the bun and shorts and khakis. Feminine is good! Also, another lesson, maybe I should trim the back of my pixie even though I’m growing it out – yours looks pretty long on top, I could try for that. But I don’t know, I’m in the big grow-out push. I really loved the black dress, you carried it so well, it would have looked tart-ish on a 20 year old, but it looked fantastic on you with your short hair and big necklace. Very good dress for your body type too. Wow

  • Candace May, 19 2015, 11:59 / Reply

Garance, you simply looked stunning, like the stylish French Woman (not “girl”) that you are! Just beautiful! Perhaps you’ll start a trend of wearing dresses that don’t show much, (love, LOVE that slit with the thigh-highs) yet are elegantly sexy all the same!

Just tone down the self-deprecation, it isn’t necessary for a Woman to be so hard on yourself (making references/excuses/apologies for not being whatever) nor is it appropriate or cute, especially when one has it “going on” like you do. You are an Icon, and the next generation of women are looking up to you.

Work it, rock it, OWN IT! You’ve earned it and you Deserve it!

  • I loove your black look so much and yes you are a woman who stuns in short hair!!

  • OMG! You look absolutely AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! Truly beautiful!!!!!

  • You should wear these kind of feminine dresses more often when choosing your everyday outfit too – to show your body, and not to hide it behind boyfriend shirts, and boyfriend jeans. You look much more confident in them also, maybe because you feel that these clothes are your real friends. :)

  • Salut Garance,

  • You looked GORGEOUS!!! Did Sarah also find that midi dress I saw on your IG feed? Because I loved it too!
I have a VIP wedding next month (I know I can’t compare that to Cannes but it’s my best friends’ wedding so it’s more VIP for me than Cannes!!) and I’m freaking out because I can’t find a dress. I wish I could hire an stylist too… I’m all for making life simpler!

  • WOW!!!!! Gorgeous….simply gorgeous! And…skinny!!! Good for you with the stylist! They have to make a living too! She did an amazing job! ;-)

O.M.G. Magnifique! You look like at least a million $$$
And forget about “Mad Max” . That movie sucks…

  • Hi Garance, this has to be one of your best-ever posts! And you are looking gorgeous. Did you meet the L’Oreal brand ambassadors? They are much like the women featured on your site…strong, fearless, global, real. Would love to hear more about that, if you did speak to them.

PS: Your new beau is h.o.t.

  • So elegant place, want to be there this summer ;)

  • Garance! You look AMAZING, so, sooooo beautifull!! Also, you have that shine… that LOVE thing. I’ve been reading your blog for years and girl…… best moment ever!

  • Jolanda May, 20 2015, 6:38 / Reply

Garance, chic, sympathique et pétillante ! Super!!!

  • Hélène May, 20 2015, 7:26 / Reply

  • Bella! :) You look fabulous and happy.

  • Who is Chris? No introduction. No last name. Surely he deserves both.

  • The total white outfit is so stylish!

  • You look beautiful Garance! Tres chic! I definitely agree with getting your clothes tailored to your body; it makes the world of difference.
How could you think you would look anything less than stunning which that elegant black dress and slicked back hair and a gorgeous man on your arm!!? Good work!

  • You look stunning, and very elegant. And Happy! (most importantly) I only have one small gripe. I really wish you wouldn’t second guess the beauty of your body. I’m not going to guess your dress size, it’s none of my business, but your proportions are very feminine and attractive. There are many women whose bodies do not fit that description, women who have “real bodies” they have to accept everyday after constantly looking at images of size zero models. It’s always nice to be modest, but really Garance, you should accept that your body isn’t even close to being on the larger side, your legs are out of this world, etc. I think it’s time for real women with “real bodies” to stop referring to their bodies as “real” as if that’s a negative thing. I find it’s much more negative to maintain an unhealthy size 0, or constantly compare ourselves to women whose bodies are unrealistic, and frankly, not very feminine. I’m finally feeling better after an eternity figuring out medicine (my thyroid gave out and I had no control over my weight-I felt trapped in someone else’s body). I look back on my size 6 body with so much regret that I didn’t love it when I had it. I was always ashamed of my curves. Now that my doctor has controlled my levels, I’m focusing on getting back in shape (now that it’s possible!) I really hope we’re coming close to the age when women no longer compare themselves to an unhealthy standard. Oh, and in my humble opinion, voluptuous women look infinitely better naked. just saying:)

  • WOW, you look amazing!! And so does Chris, you look really happy together!

WAAAOUH !

  • Look how beautiful you are!!!
Also, I must know–what is the trick for widening shoes??

  • Garance you look divine in that Jil Sander dress! So you!

(p.s as a personal shopper myself, I think it is fun to have someone to work on an outfit for you, it will push your limit and try things you wouldn’t otherwise)

  • Garance believe me when I say this: that black dress is so Bond- girl-like and you look so hot on it!

Just wanted to add a little thing: You really DO look gorgious AND no need to show your boobs and your belly button in the same decolleté ! I don’t feel a mormon, I do wear some plunging necklines sometimes but it’s disturbing me this year in Cannes those dresses the actresses are wearing, competing for who is showing the most…
I’ve been following you from the beginning, I’ve seen you evolve so much, going so far away from my sphere but it is a real pleasure to see these pictures today of a person looking great, glowing with love and passion, you’re THERE; Keep going girl !

  • Garance, you look stunning! The Jill Stuart dress was made for nobody else but you. Really! And, I happen to think, you have a great body and killer legs :) I have an indescreet question – what type of underware one wears underneath a dress with such a revealing cut? It’s not pure curiosity, you know – my secret dream is to wear a dress with a dramatic cut one day. On my 40th birthday (one more year to go!) for example :) Seriously, you look stunning and very “you”, which means that the stylist did a great job!

    Sylvie

  • Garance, hands down YOU wore that dress, the dress didn’t wear you! MAGNIFIQUE – I’m admiring you more every time I read your posts in my bed before shut eye. Not to be a jinx, YOU are in such a good place now, it enthuses in your smile and halo. Your company, studio, relationship, being in your skin, turning 40. They always say, things come to you when you are ready for it …and I am seeing that with you. Your transition was done with steps and I followed it and I am looking forward on my transition also EXCITED even…being in a good place with myself, my body, giving up Corporate and venturing out on my own. Turning 37 and looking forward to it and meeting someone good for me, that excites me everytime I see him.

  • You look stunning! Who is the guy next to you?

  • This is only my second comment on your blog even tho I have been a reader for 8 years or so. I have looked to you, your style and your work to inform my buying for my boutique. You have been an invaluable resource for me. Tho’ we have never met, I feel like I know you, your writing is so personal and real. This post however is different. I feel like documents such a significant moment for you. It is really inspiring to see a woman fully realizing a dream right before your eyes. I just can’t stop looking at the photos. Apparently everyone else though so too – I think your site crashed last night!! Even just being a witness to your journey has been amazing and exciting. Seeing you arrive at this high platform of accomplishment is absolutely incredible. Big congratulations to you Garance, on arriving in such amazing style. It is just so inspired. Thank you.

  • Garance, I don’t know what size you wear, but you are a beautiful woman! Truly beautiful.

  • Wow!! You look seriously stunning Garance.
Fantastic outfit, but I must say that your best accessory is your confidence (and that oh so handsome Chris on your arm is pretty good too!)
Good on you for empowering women everywhere to look and feel their best!

  • Hello Garance, I’ve been following your blog for about 4 to 5 years and have watched it, your style, and your career magnificently evolve. Congratulations – an inspiration for sure! Renee in Portland, Oregon

  • Can you tell us more about the tricks of a stylist? How do you widen your shoes? She really did a great job.

  • Garance, you look so incredibly gorgeous in these photos and I’m sure, in “real life” on the runway. Thank you for sharing the behind-the-scenes to what we see on the red carpet–so interesting & complicated. Not a surprise, I suppose, but still intriguing! I am so in love with your Jill Stuart gown. It’s sleek, sexy, and still completely classy–in the totally not boring kind of way. As always, your anecdotes are so entertaining! Thanks for including us. :)

  • You are such a beautiful woman. All the clothes, which were great BTW, were just a nice background :) really good job!

You are absolutely stunning! The hair, makeup, accessories and the dress are just gorgeous – perfect fit on your elegant body! The two of you look like you own the world! <3

Please do not get thinner – you have a killer figure!

  • Vraiment belle, vraiment beaux.

Waouh !

  • Vous êtes magnifiques!

  • Just one question: was there a “high heels is a must” rule?

  • I think you should see your psy….. because you look so stunning! And the dress, the pictures with Chris… Feel like you just come from a Hollywood movie!!

    bisous bisous

You don’t look like you, although you look more than great, you actually look fantastic but not you.
I have been following you for quite sometime now, I love the way you write and your honesty and I love your pictures and your style.
But I have to admit that when I saw the picture of you wearing that dress it
Just felt weird, like you were a different person, looking amazingly good but different than the image I have of you and similar to everybody else.
My feeling is that you are evolving and growing and reaching a new status which is all good but then I just hope that you do not start looking like everybody else, as you mentioned in one of your recent post, we all tend to follow and like what every body likes and then becoming the same as everybody else, we tend to align ourselves with the rest of our surroundings and I hope that doesn’t happen to you

What a great post and love the detail you’ve gone into to explain the various elements of a stylist’s job – really captures that it is not just picking a few dresses and voila! You look lovely in both red carpet outfits and I love that it totally reflects your sleek style – and esp. love both you and Chris in the black outfits. As Rachel Zoe would say – I die!! Magnifique!

  • Ai-Ch'ng May, 22 2015, 12:54 / Reply

You are just absolutely RADIANT! Both of you – overflowing with joy.

What I see first and foremost here is your unconfined happiness, elegance and beauty! And the clothes you have both chosen to wear – well, they are spectacular in every way: but, would you believe that your clothes here, really are a very far second to the vibe you’re emanating in these photos? Those clothes are gorgeous – but they’re really just an expression or extension of your inner (even more profound) gorgeousness. You really are beyond beautiful here.

Tu as bien assuré, cependant !

  • MelissaCD May, 22 2015, 11:47 / Reply

OMG! you are totally channeling Claire Underwood from House of Cards! I love it!!! Power styling!

  • Sorry but I don’t see why you have to be in Cannes at the film festival with burrowed clothes & all.
The whole thing looks staged and fake. It would have been interesting if at least you were the stylist of your own look or at least someone from your team. The article gives the impression that you are a simple “clothes horse”.

  • Garance…daaang…!!! Girl, you look good. You look like a legit movie star. I mean, that side-slit with the horizontal strap! And the sunglasses, my dear! That’s the way to top it all off. Did it come from your own closet? ;)

Wow, you and Chris looked INCREDIBLE for Cannes!! That Jill Stuart dress looks like it was made for you, and your hair and makeup were perfect!! ;-) I recently read an IntoTheGloss feature about Sarah Slutsky, and I fell in love with what she had to say about her passion for styling. Then, coincidentally, you made this post about her being your stylist! Funny how when you read about someone in one place, they tend to pop up again, like a sign from the universe that you should pay attention to this person :-)

  • Wow…breathless…Trop belle!

you looked absolutely fab, bravo to the photographer, my fav pic is when you walk down the corridor. the black dress and heels were my fav, you looked really happy! very gorgeous pics!

  • Your dress
    Your body in the dress
    Your hair and makeup
    is perfection.

  • Garance, you have to tell us, how do you widen shoes?!
