Fashion! Drama!! Suspenseful music!!!

This trailer for the new YSL biopic has us on the edge of our seats (okay, that two-second flash of Pierre Niney posing as a nude Yves Saint Laurent probably didn’t hurt either). It came out yesterday in France (jealous) and we are patiently awaiting the debut stateside!

Are you going to go see it?

  • I have been thoroughly put off by the bombastic music used on the trailer

uh oh…..this does not bode well

if they need to underline the drama with such a dramatic musical score it might mean that the film is weak

    Musical overkill = Huge anticlimax

I”ll go and see it even thought the performances feel very theatrical at first glance

    agreed

  • everybody’s looking forward to it!!! :)

  • Yeah, that was my reaction as well… But sometimes trailers do overdo it quite a bit and the film itself is less bombastic :) (You never know though).

  • Garance, I’m absolutely agog with huge anticipation. One of the greats who changed how women dress irrevocably, undeniably forever. Just hope the movie does justice to this genius.

  • OMG looks really special!

  • Very nice. I like new YSL.

Si?

  • Oooooh I just can’t wait any longer…!

Come over and check out the brand new and relaunched WHAT PIXIES WEAR ?

  • Most definitely! Saw the trailer a while back and was literally on the edge of my seat with my nose touching the screen! Can not wait!!! C x

  • agree about the music…. gaaaah… I hope it’s not like that all through the film!! The rest looks like fun… did anyone else read The Beautiful Fall? Excellent about Yves and Karl and Paris…. great book.

  • The Beautiful Fall : Best fashion biography EVER

I did an internship for a year at the Haute Couture press office at YSL in 1978. I was a shy young kid .

Our office was next to Pierre Berge’s office and 2 doors down from the studio where Monsieur worked with LouLou etc
Because the assistants and interns could not afford to wear expensive clothes to work there, we were given a white pinafore to wear. Monsieur St Laurent wore the same one so that we would not feel awkward

I was too shy to go to lunch at the cafeteria with the others and would sit everyday in the press office reading magazines , Monsieur St Laurent at another table, alone, smoking cigarettes and reading.
We never exchanged one word in one year. I felt he was there hiding from the rest of the turbulent world and intrigues of the Maison.

The book also describes well an epoch that I knew and lived in when I started as a photographer’s agent in the early 80’s , you can read about it here http://www.fashionsphinx.com/tony-viramontes-part-3/

Everything that I experienced, first by working at YSL and after that through the parties and people I frequented , is absolutely in that book and written in the most truthful way.
I was there, in the office, listening to the big Karl disputes …etc etc nothing has been fabricated.

can’t wait to see the film

  • Fashionsphinx, thank you sooooooo much for sharing your personal experience of those amazing times!! The Beautiful Fall really captured the essence – the great creativity and the harshness as well, and to have you confirm it really made my day. So few biographies really capture the real deal. I’m glad to have my perception that it did validated. I hope someone (maybe you?) writes a fantastic novel about it.

  • MROSS thank you for your nice compliment and yes, I am in the process of writing a book . I have many photographs of those years and I will make it as real as it was, no sugarcoating.

But working at YSL was the best experience of my life , one that I will never forget, for many reasons. And also the first time I ever faced such complicated relationships, tensions and intrigues…it was very very complicated and full of daily dramas and lots of shouting and screaming.

Some of the time I was also the gofer for the in-house models (who also terrified me)…Mounia, Katiusha, Pat Cleveland, Violetta Sanchez ……they used to send me out to buy them cigarettes since they were all day on call for the couture clients and for the atelier fittings, in full hair and make up ,in a white bathrobe and slippers, all day long.
But I did get to go on the photo shoots and assist in the Couture shows .

I hope you have the time to read the 3 parts of the Tony Viramontes story I shared here above and again…Alicia Drake ( who I know well ) did an incredible job. I know many people were mad at her and she had many legal problems but in my opinion it was well worth it because fashion is not The Devil Wears Prada . It is also dark and dangerous.

Thank you also Garance , big shout out ! for allowing us readers to comment and write and to share our stories with hers on her amazing blog

  • I got so caught up in that music – it looks absolutely fantastic! Living in NZ I’m hoping it won’t be too long until it is shown over these ways. Perhaps I will have to wait until the French Film Festival.

The trailer doesn’t reflect the movie, I saw yesterday (and commented in french in my blog) … Much more about feelings than about fashion… and quite “explicite” about the sexual life of Saint-Laurent, even for french people… I think the book of Alicia Drake, “Beautiful people”, is very interesting…

  • Oh wow! It is going to be fantastic xx

    qu’ YSL…

  • Garance: Thanks for sharing this with us! I cannot wait to see it!

  • Le film est absolument fabuleux. Incroyable.
La performance de Pierre Niney est remarquable… Bouleversante.

Blur, Montell Jordan, Menelik, Dr.Alban, Lauryn Hill, Nelly Furtado, Mellowman, Offspring, Bambi Cruz, Alanis Morissette, Jamiroquai, etc…

  • Wow….I have to see this before i make a comment…J”Adore St Laurent…

  • I want to thank Fashionsphynx for sharing his experience. The behind the scenes is always the most interesting.
I saw Yves Saint Laurent several times at the Mamounia in Marrakech. When he was there he’d spend time everyday sitting in the hall (my guide told me that before becoming sober it was at the bar drinking). He was sitting there with a Morrocan secretary and Moujik. I had my dog with me who barked at Moujik. Yves Saint Laurent was very shy and didn’t want to interact with anyone. You felt like you’d agress him if you went to talk to him. But one evening I was passing in the hall I was wearing white Moschino pants and an electric blue Emporio Armani top and high heels sandals. Suddenly my eyes were attracted to a corner of the hall where he didn’t usually sit and there he was staring at me. And I was like: waouw he’s got all the most beautiful models on his runways and still he did notice me. I always regretted that I didn’t walk to him and say: Mr. Saint Laurent I admire your work, I love your clothes. For years I kept reproaching it to myself until that day in Paris when I was at the Georges V bar. I was sitting there and suddenly I saw a man sitting alone at the bar, when he turned I saw it was Yves Saint Laurent. Then he left whithout looking at anyone, completely closed to the outside world. There I understood it was not my fault. It was just the way he was.

  • Great story Andrea! I think it is a good thing that you did not disturb him. YSL was a very shy and very sick man, he already was very sick when I worked in the Maison in 1978 . He had to be carried up to the first floor most days. I do not think he would have appreciated an intrusion , however heartfelt and honest it was. Better to enjoy your memory as it is , as platonic encounters , non ?

I remember one funny episode when I was working in the Maison : one day I was given the task of cleaning out the model’s lockers. There was a room specifically for them , to store their street clothes and do their hair and make up. After that they sat in another room in their bathrobes and stockings, smoking and bitching, all day long , on call.

Some of the girls were very mean and scary , and I say SHE DEVIL scary.

I started clearing out a locker at the top of the row which seemed abandoned. The lock was broken and the door had been taped closed in a weird way. I opened it distractedly and it was stuffed with junk , so I got on a ladder and started pulling out stuff : out fell a black voodoo doll full of pins, some locks of hair, clothes, dried stuff and weird shit…..don’t want to know what those bits and pieces were but they looked very dead.

I ran screaming to the Couture PR office where I worked and brought down my 2 bosses and we poked at the locker with a broomstick until more stuff fell out….we screamed and ran around the room unable to touch the stuff…it was so scary !

Turned out that it belonged to THE muse of the house ( name withheld ) , Monsieur’s favorite black model , a fierce high strung girl that scared the hell out of everyone. She had cast a voodoo spell on one of the other models and had collected her hair and stolen pieces of clothing to add to the mix.

We ended up having to call the janitor because no one wanted to pick that stuff up with their hands. He swept it into a garbage bag and threw it away. All the girls burnt sage for days after.

That was the kind of thing that also went on at the Maison . I am also looking forward to reading Laurence Benaim’s YSL biog. I have been told it is very good. She is a fantastic writer.

  • Vu hier soir! ;)

  • Definitely can’t wait! I have no actual YSL to wear, so I’ll have to deck myself out in some YSL makeup and Manifesto for the occasion. :)

  • I had no idea they were even making a movie about him! Now I’m so excited and I can’t wait to see it

  • Always controversial, a little theatrical in music… but never the less I am interested to see it!

  • OUI OUI OUI :)

YSL is my inspiration for designing…..I literally cried at the last exhibit of his work….!!

  • I absolutely can’t wait for this film to come up! It looks great! :)

    ANDREA

don’t be put off by the stupid trailer music–it’s what movie companies have to do these days–they think it sells the film by increasingthe ‘drama’..
the film music is never the trailer music! (my husband is a composer)

    FONCEZ !!

  • I absolutely loved the trailler and I cant wait to watch the whole movie. The music in the trailer is amazing, by the way.
