Weekend Guide: Upstate

Weekend Guide: Upstate

I could not have been more ready for a weekend out of the city. So, at 2pm on Friday, I hopped in a car and drove to Barryville, New York…
Wait, Barryville? Where the hell is that?!

Ok, so I hadn’t really heard of it either, but it’s a small town in the Catskills right on the Delaware River (so it’s mega beautiful), and it’s only a two-hour drive from the city. If you find yourself looking for a weekend in nature in a town that feels a bit untouched, here’s what you should do when you get there:

Stay: Hillside Schoolhouse, a two-bedroom hotel in a converted schoolhouse that was built in 1893 and was recently restored by Bronson Bigelow and his wife. The schoolhouse feels like the Upstate home of your dreams, with a communal first floor that has a kitchen, dining area and a bunch of records and games for guests to play. We had the hotel to ourselves for the first two nights and it really just feels like an amazing house. I’d recommend either going with friends or renting out both rooms so it’s just yours. It’s total Upstate bliss.

Eat: The Heron. This farm-to-table restaurant is about a 30 minute drive from Hillside Schoolhouse and has the best damn fried chicken I’ve ever had. The staff are extremely nice and the food and cocktails are delicious. It feels like what most Brooklyn restaurants are going for, but is actually authentic to the area. Make sure you get dessert.

Shop: Nest. This shop is just across the street from The Heron in Narrowsburg and has a really great selection of vintage furniture at prices that are still pretty reasonable (well, compared to Manhattan). Anna, the owner, worked at W and Vogue before opening her store and starting her own line of hand-made Brazilian goods that she sells in the store.

Do: Mongaup River Trail. Ok, so I threw my back out and couldn’t go kayaking, but I did manage to do a very mild hike on this trail which was four miles of nature bliss (yes, those are dams built by real beavers) that ends in a small cemetery from the early 1800s. A little eerie, but also pretty special.
