It is funny that everybody is saying the French are rude because compared to the Germans they always seem like the most warm people to me.

Funny, but not really true. At the big department stores maybe, but at the Gap, Zara, etc., the mostly young people are very helpful. The trick is to look as if you’re about to cry, preferably for existential reasons or just because you’ve had enough. Fool them into thinking they’re about to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back, and they’ll come around. You can do this all day long and have perfectly nice experiences.
ps Don’t try this in Germany.
