Boredom
7 years ago by
When was the last time you said you were bored? I honestly can’t remember. Growing up, it was not uncommon for me to whine to my mom that I was bored and she would come back with a slew of possible things I could do to entertain myself, none of which sounded remotely appealing. Go outside! Climb a tree! Read a book! Walk the dog! She also would remind me how much of a luxury it was to even be bored. That one always went right over my head. Until now.
I miss the long, sleepy summer days filled with nothing to do, or seemingly nothing to do. I have some of the best memories of those times. Water colors in the backyard, making perfume out of my mom’s garden flowers, driving around with friends, talking about everything under the sun and more.
This may sound a bit romantic and nostalgic, but who cares? You can chalk it up to being a youth with no real job yet, but also to having to actually use your brain and creativity to entertain yourself. You couldn’t just pick up a device, open an app and while away hours scrolling through images of people you’ve never met. It’s almost like you have to work harder to avoid the constant onslaught of information around you. Truly uninterrupted time with yourself or friends is so rare nowadays.
My mom was right. Being bored really was a luxury.
