Consuming Creative Mediums

Consuming Creative Mediums

The other night, I was catching up with an old friend of mine from home. I recommended a podcast I love, and he immediately responded: “I don’t do podcasts.” To which I immediately responded: “What do you mean you don’t do podcasts??”

Except, then I remembered…. I, too, used to not “do” podcasts. In fact, I’m relatively new to the podcast life. It wasn’t until I moved to the city that I came to realize their potential. Driving around in my car, I never wanted to listen to other people chat, I wanted to listen to my Sirius XM Radio and jaaaam. But, now that I walk everywhere, giant-headphones on amongst the crowd, I find myself getting bored of my tired playlists, yearning for more thought-engaging stimuli.

I’ve found other differences in my consumption of creative mediums since moving, too. While I used to spend hours curled up with a book on my couch in Ohio, now, I mostly limit my reading time to my subway rides.

I watch less movies, and more T.V.

And where I used to be happy spending an entire Sunday drawing and collaging away in the studio, now I feel myself craving fresh air and afternoons outside. Maybe, that’s because I live in a cramped studio…

Alas! I’m curious, has your consumption of entertainment / interest in exercising your creativity shifted in different locations or phases throughout your life?

  • Yes it has! I overheard one day (on the radio) about your motivation when you were younger. When I think about my most creative times, when I was exiting high school into college, I was always creating. I was a force. One day, I was reflecting on my drawing skills and thought, I use to be really good at this~ what happened? Oh, wait, Netflix and social media. I kinda want to get back to my creative stomping grounds, but sometimes at the end of the workday, I just crave a glass a wine and an hour of TV that turns into 3 seasons later and by the time I open one of the 7 books I’m reading, I pass out for the night faster than a turn of a page. And with everything amped up in the social media craze, I wonder how do these people create so much and so fast? So I’m glad to see that it isn’t just me. Cheers!

  • I didn’t realised until you said it, but I wasn’t a podcast person up until I started walking everywhere too! And it’s just for the same reason: there’s a limited amount of times I want to listen to music on repeat (which is, by the way, how I consume music).

Now, in terms of tv I used to love choosing among whatever was playing on the channels I had access to (which weren’t that many), but now Netflix is the only thing I have access to, so I spend my time with movies in the background while illustrating.

So curious how our lifes end up shapping our habits the same way our habits shape our life.
(Maybe too deep for this time of the day).

Thank you for your post, it’s been really nice to read you, as always :)
