There’s a lot to love about Haley Boyd. At the top of the list is her personal style; timeless with a modern edge that somehow checks the box of both femininity and functionality, all the way down to her shoes, which she happens to design. Marais is her made in Los Angeles line of strappy slides, sandals, and mules that are as approachable as they are colorful and could accompany you to just about any occasion.

From her clothes, to her work, to the glimpses of her personal life she shares on Instagram (file farmers market meals and vacations to Italy under “reasons to love”), Haley encapsulates California ease in a sort of Didion way. So much so that even on a rare cloudy afternoon in Downtown LA with our friend Angi, her style and warmth were still distinct.

How do your shoes and your shoe brand influence the direction of your outfits getting dressed each morning?
I usually decide on clothing first and shoes last. Shoes are the easiest part – I look at my outfit and know whether I want something elegant and unobtrusive (the Classic Mule), casual and flat to dress down my look (the St Tropez Sandal), and so on. Over the years, I’ve tried unsuccessfully to have the willpower to not own one of everything in the collection. Needless to say, I have every style in every color.

LA gets a bad rap for having an overly boho aesthetic, but your style is so refined! Any tips for achieving an elevated look in coastal climates?
Keep it simple. Search for really perfect pieces that stand on their own. You look ‘dressed’ without doing too much, and the look is classic and straightforward and makes sense in a casual city like LA (or anywhere). There are a lot of small details that make a huge difference. I love a high crewneck that covers my collarbone. It accentuates the length of the neck, and it looks intentional so you don’t need a necklace or a belt or anything to jazz it up. Try taking a picture in the mirror of the fitting room. It’s so much easier to see those nuances in 2D. At first it’s a lot of work to build your wardrobe this way, but you wind up with a closet that will dress you in seconds for pretty much any occasion. Shoes aside, my closet is tiny.
