Georgia on the Go

6 years ago by

I’ve always been incredibly inspired by women who manage to look chic and put together when they travel. For me, I try, but it’s definitely an effort—far from the effortlessness I imagine every time I put a suitcase together.

But when you’ve spent the last 5 years of your life traveling the world without a place to call home for more than a few months at a time, like our friend Georgia (Gigi) Hopkins, it’s something you start to get really good at. Georgia joined us in Marrakech for our Art of Storytelling retreat, after very recently relocating to Lisbon, and it was absolutely no surprise that she embodied a casual Moroccan-inspired elegance throughout our week together.

Describe your style in 3 words
Anything goes!

What is your ideal uniform to wear every day?
A skirt, sneakers, sunnies.

What’s the best piece of style advice you’ve ever received?
To wear what suits you and what feels comfortable rather than following the latest trends. I guess I stick to that approach. Oh, and mix your prints!

Where do you find inspiration, for dressing and beyond?
Everywhere, but especially on my travels. I am inspired by the people I meet, the colors I see, and the surrounding environment. I love learning about all the local artisans and brands in any of the places I am visiting, and love to support them where I can. In Morocco last week I was loving Belgian designer Laurence Leenaert’s brand, LRNCE; jewelry by French designer, Stéphanie Giribone; and the beautiful woven garments by Marrakshi Life as well. Right now though, it’s all about finding local Portuguese brands because we have just relocated to Lisbon. My favorite so far is JAK Shoes – leather shoes designed in Lisbon and handmade in the north of Portugal.

Do you have a fashion muse?
Not really, but my two younger sisters in Australia are the most stylish women I know, so in a lot of ways I guess they were my muses while growing up (and still are). I also love the classic, bohemian and causal style of all my girlfriends in California that I discovered while living in the US.

How has travel influenced your approach to style?
Living out of a suitcase for the past five years has meant I have inadvertently become a minimalist when it comes to my wardrobe. I have a good selection of basics and essentials to mix and match back with new pieces I collect along the way. Obviously with my entire wardrobe having to fit into one case, I look for pieces that are comfortable and easy to pack (and that don’t require any ironing!). Comfort is so important to me and my lifestyle.
