Black Tie Optional

7 years ago by

Now that we’re solidly into spring, and summer is just around the corner, aside from the swimwear and sun dresses, I’m trying to figure out what to wear to all of the fancy events I have coming up.

Yes…fancy events! You know, weddings, and maybe even a few galas. Ok, I don’t really have any gala plans, but weddings of the black-tie-optional sort are aplenty for me this year. Garance has written about the ease of the tuxedo (and we already know how good Aymeline looked in that custom Marni suit for the Met Gala), but truth be told, I’m too short petite to pull that off without looking like I’m five and also a boy.

What I’m constantly trying to achieve is what Elsa, above, pulls off so well—she looks incredibly chic but still looks like herself. She’s polished but not overdone, and she still has a style without just fitting into the black tie mold of being overly done up. I suppose this is all to be expected from the senior digital editor of CR Fashion Book. Her Rosetta Getty dress feels perfectly 70s, appropriate given that this photo was taken at a gala for a YSL exhibition in Richmond, Virginia, that Brie and Pia were lucky enough to attend last week.

How do you black-tie (optional)?
