What The Hell Does My T-Shirt Say?

The other day, I told you about my Woody Allen t-shirt, way better than a cigarette as a conversation starter.
I love t-shirts with writing on them. But I actually own very few, cause there aren’t too many things I want plastered across my chest, you know?
And so the other other day, I was strolling through the aisles of H&M (in order to buy that) when suddenly, this t-shirt pops right out in front of me. Yep. This one up there in the picture…
I thought it was pretty from afar, so I zoomed in a little closer… And… Mmmmmm…”LA N°8 Noire (with a stain)”
“What the hell does that mean?”
I thought to myself that I had to talk to you about it ASAP, then of course, I forgot.
And in the meantime, I wandered over to Urban Outfitters and I saw this:
“Va te faire voir” is kinda just like saying “Go to hell!” but sort of meaner, like “Go fuck yourself!”
Yeah.
And a little more worrisome :
(Don’t worry it’s been taken off the racks since then.)
So all this makes me wonder, how do you guys choose your t-shirts ?
Do you like t-shirts with a real message? Like “Obama Rules”? Do you like photos? Illustrations?
Or do you like stuff that doesn’t mean anything and is mostly graphic like the one in the photo? (What do you say when people ask you what it means?)
(I’m not asking if you’d wear a go to hell t-shirt as I forbid any of you to wear a go to hell t-shirt. ;)

j’adore les tee shirt à messages, les motifs non, j’ai beaucoup de mal! ce tee shirt “la N8 noire je l’ai vu au rayon grande taille d’H&M il était tout seul, j’ai longuement hésité à le prendre…j’aurais du car du coup je suis sure qu’il n’y sera plus!

Un jour j’ai acheté un tee-shirt avec sur le devant “Buongiorno” et derrière “Arrivederci”. Grande fan de l’Italie je l’arborais à longueur de journée… Jusqu’à ce qu’un ami m’avoue que c’était très “bitchy” ! Pour lui c’était une grande ouverture pour les gens que je croisais de face… et finalement une grande claque hautaine du moment qu’ils m’avaient dépassés. Depuis je n’ose plus le mettre :( Je pense que les messages n’ont donc pas forcément le même sens pour tout le monde il faut donc réfléchir à toutes les interprétations.
Moi j’aime pas du tout! J’ai une poitrine donc les lettres ne restent jamais a leur place !! Et puis je ne aime pas être lue!

A few times I got shirts that had some little statement or design…but I never wore them. Or, I only wore them to sleep.
I can sometimes appreciate them, especially if they are obscurely funny, like this Flight of the Conchords Tee that just said ‘We like to rock the party’, but I don’t find within myself any interest in wearing them. I even sometimes like to browse those clever T-shirt sites, and kind of want one about velociraptors, but they might as well be clever cards or comic strips. I’d rather just think about wearing them, and am quite content not to ever really wear them.
I have this Boston Bruins fitted tee as sort of a costume piece, when I want to play the hockey fan.
Jamais d’inscription pour moi. J’ai l’intelligence tellement fine que j’ai jamais trouvé quelqu’un à ma hauteur. Muoahahah !
Non en vrai je trouve que les vêtements, l’attitude et le style parlent d’eux-mêmes, rajouter une inscription, ça fait trop, ça suppléante d’un coup toute l’expression contenue dans les autres pièces. C’est une contrainte énorme en plus, et de taille.. Et c’est déjà assez compliqué de trouver de quoi s’habiller le matin !
Et ben, elles sont balèzes tes lectrices, parce que franchement “la nuit noire” (??!!!) il fallait le trouver!! :p
Plus sérieusement j’adore les tees “imprimés”, mais perso je suis plus du style à jouer le second degré à fond en optant pour un groupe de rock (j’en ai un des Beatles par exemple), ou même un personnage de fiction (je viens de me commander un pull Zoé Karssen Batman sur Net-à-Porter). En gros je ne suis pas du genre à porter “une phrase”, mais plutôt une illu sympa, un groupe qui me plaît ou juste un imprimé que je trouve décalé et fun ;)

J’avais 2 t-shirts “à message” que j’aimais bien, car ils avaient chacun 2 significations pour moi.
L’un portait “Qui se soucie de moi.”, écrit en blanc sur fond noir, acheté pendant une tournée de Cali, dont une chanson est intitulée ainsi.
L’autre avait juste écrit “PAZ” en rouge sur fond noir, acheté pendant une tournée de Raul Paz, génial chanteur de pop cubaine (dont Paz est le vrai nom, et qui veut dire aussi “paix” en espagnol, pour ceux qui ne le parlent pas).
C’était à la fois des petits messages et des bons souvenirs de 2 super concerts, et en plus les t-shirts étaient très soft, pas de photo du chanteur dessus, pas d’écriture bizarre. Mais sortis du contexte, après coup c’était moyen, car l’un voulait un peu dire “regardez moi, j’ai besoin d’attention” et l’autre “je suis pour la paix dans le monde”, comme les réponses des Miss France à la question de Jean-Pierre Foucault : “Quelles valeurs défendrez-vous si vous êtes élue ?”.
Bref, j’ai arrêté les messages, et j’en ai pas trouvé de neutres et biens…
As I was raised at a catholic nuns school I like to wear a t-shirt saying in big handwriting style letters “holy chic”… maybe i never get off this resistance thing….haha and I like to wear statement t-shirts from 5 preview like the “55” or one stating “femme fatale no. 221” – so although Obama fan (whatever people think he is the coolest president on earth…) I wouldn’t wear a t-shirt supporting that, rather those having a special sense of humor and at least kind of a message… I am going for clear text massages and it should have a nice typo too. Maybe you should ask H&M for the meaning, but if trying to find something with the big search engine – first hit was: there is a computer game called L.A. NOIRE…..

I like go for simple messages that may carry an understated message, i.e. I have a UNIQLO t-shirt that says SHHHHHH! on it and I used to wear it when I had presentations at uni.
For me the key is that message has to be cool, something you’d read and think its funny, cute or simply cool. For that I love UNIQLO. I have one that says “Girl going to work in an office”, and my sis one that says “Nobody understands me”
In Spain around 7 years ago everybody wore a Zara t-shirt that said I (heart) my boyfriend, and for me it became the never-to-wear t-shirt. Itseemed a cheap message to up out in a t-shirt (that’s not how I would let people know I love my boyfriend).
Also around that time Zara used to make t-shirts with messages in “English” that made no sense gramatically so it was weird because they really didn’t mean anything. That’s why I opt for cool/funny/cute (/ironic) messages.

J’ai un t-shirt gris que je porte tout le temps, avec écrit ‘mit pommes’ (avec des frites en allemand) à l’indélébile par un ami en fin de soirée… mais je ne porte presque jamais de -shirt imprimé à part celui-ci celui-ci parce qu’il a une histoire, et que c’est de l’humour absurde

C’est drôle, il y a deux jours j’ai vu un t-shirt avec “I JUST WANNA GET HIGH”. Je suis pas contre les inscriptions mais ceux qui veulent les mettre devraient au moins savoir ce que ça veut dire.. Ou comme ce t-shirt que ma pote avait failli acheter pour son mec, de près il avait un effet graphique hyper sympa pleins de carrés noir-blanc mais de loin… ben c’était une photo érotique. Arf.

This is something that PLAGUES me. I love the look of shirts with writing on them but I agonize over buying them because of what they say. Same goes for cool band t-shirts. The only thing I’ve ever settled on is a cool band t-shirt of a rapper I’ve seen twice already in concert and am not embarrassed supporting. THE WORDS THOUGH, they are tough. My search goes on.

I actually kind of like the very first shirt in the post, I kind of like that’s it’s indiscernible. Although I myself never wear shirts with writing/messages on them, I’ve just never been drawn to them, I do like that this one is kind of more graphic than textual.
I probably avoid these type of shirts for the same reason I’ve never gotten a tattoo – I don’t feel strongly enough about anything that I’d want it plastered on my body, for any length of time.

I fear I am way too firmly entrenched in late middle age (55. Zut alors!) to wear message tees but does that stop me? Hell, no! I have my “as seen in Vogue” Warm is not cool tee, a striped one from J.Crew with ” Bonne Chance” across my bosom, and a street fair ” West Village 10014″ that I like to wear when traveling (a subconscious ” if lost, please return to…”). However my favorite tee this summer is a printed photo of palm trees and surfer boys by Henry Holland from Sandro men’s. Pour ton déchiffrage d’inscription, j’aurais dit que ca faisait référence à la boule noire au billard. Mais l’hypothèse de La nuit noire est beaucoup plus logique.
Sinon, pour les t-shirts à messages…. j’en ai que 2 que j’ai acheté il y a quelques années, 2 t-shirts Marc Jacobs. L’un dit Don’t fret my pet et l’autre You change your spots. Autant dire que je les avais achetés pour les illustrations, mais les gens ne remarquent que le texte. Immanquable. Lassée de leur questions, je les porte à l’intérieur d’une jupe taille haute par exemple. Maintenant, il y a que les dessins qui sont visibles. Yeah!

I got a shirt that has a line drawing of an old cassette tape with the tape coming out (all you who listened to music in the ’80s remember what that’s about) that said “Analog is warmer”. I wear it to concerts and it appears to make me seem a little more cool to all the music nerds…I’ve had band members comment on it, which makes me feel pretty good and less like the square 39 year old, poor dancer that I am!

J’aime bien les t-shirts à inscriptions, mais davantage pour le côté graphique que pour le message, donc je préfère ceux avec une écriture très travaillée, quasiment illisible :-)
Le “eat less” me laisse songeuse, et le “va te faire voir” waouhhhh ! C’est presque aussi classe que les t-shirt avec deux mains plaquées sur les seins et l’inscription “don’t touch” qu’on voyait dans les années 90 :-)
Les t-shirts à vrais messages, je ne suis pas fan, les photos non plus, par contre un beau dessin, oui !
Juste une piste pour l’interprétation: je ne pense pas que cela ait rapport à la nuit… mais à la boule de billard n°8, qui est noire!

I’m more of a graphics girl myself. Like you Garance, I rarely find a message worth publicizing across my chest. But then my friend launched a t-shirt company dedicated to aiding victims of human trafficking and all that changed. She designed a beautiful collection of tees with soft faces sketched on the front. And you want to know which is my favorite from the collection? The one with the words all over it!! At the moment I quoted this article to my husband he pointed his fingers to his own shirt with the line “Coffee is always a good idea”. Why do we buy t-shirts with funny, ridiculous or random quotes or words. Mostly because its fun I guess but… I don’t buy pieces with curse words or disturbing lines like the tee above with “eat less”. Kind of a weird happening all those words on clothing, besides of what you say you must watch what’s your shirt says too now. xx

To this day, my favorite t-shirt ever just happened to pop-up one day in the sale section of Urban Ourfitters’ website. It’s got an excellent self-portrait of Robert Mapplethorpe (http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mak1qsfq7f1r0m5ryo2_1280.jpg). I’ll never get rid of it!
The only t-shirts with drawings/messages I’d consider wearing are the ones with your thin sketches from the GAP which are lovely (I loved the printed shirts you did for Kate Spade), cool vintage rock ‘n roll & faded mickey mouse. Many might draw my attention for a laugh but I don’t like to advertise. I once saw a guy walking hand in hand with a pretty blonde on the beach wearing a custom design t-shirt that read “I’m Fucking Her”. N I C E!

I heart Vinyl (but the heart is one of those 45 record adapters)
Joy Division Unknown Pleasures album cover (this gets me the most compliments)
“Black Nerds Unite” (people love to ask where it one came from)
“Art is a Way of Survival” -Yoko Ono from Zara (I tried to re-size it and ruined it)
Bottom line is that they all say something about me. As random as I can be in life, I don’t wear random slogans that have no meaning to me. :)

Je ne suis pas fan des t-shirts à messages, car leur interprétation est, comme ce t-shirt “nuit noire”, parfois dur à saisir. Et souvent les messages ne volent pas haut; je me dis qu’encore, quand c’est écrit dans une langue étrangère, ça atténue le sens. Mais parfois le message fait vulgaire comme tu l’a montré, et je trouve qu’un t-shirt à message donne un aspect négligé ou enfantin… non, pas trop mon truc. Quoi que, de la poésie ou des citations sur des t-shirts, écrit dans une jolie police etc, pourquoi pas !

J’aime le concept mais c’est très rare que j’en trouve un dont j’aime le message. Ca me rappelle que j’avais tenté le t-shirt à message pour donner l’idée de m’appeler à un mec que j’aimais bien, le t-shirt était parfait, message subtil, sûrement trop subtil (presqu’autant que la n8 noire), et bref il n’a pas capté.
I mainly buy plain t-shirts but when it comes to printed ones they usually come by whim.For example Lately I’ve been wanting to buy a white t-shirt with a simple black “Au revoir shoshanna” (From Inglorious Bastards) on the front, and I think I’ll even have to do it myself. But I’m crazy for logo t-shirts, with superheroes or bands. I own a (pretty funny) t-shirt of Ringo Star staring at whoever dares to look at him.
J’adore les tee-shirts à message mais je n’en porte presque plus… depuis que, portant ce tee-shirt Karen Walker, j’ai dû expliqué à un vieux monsieur dans le bus que Salzburg n’est effectivement pas aux USA et que c’est juste une blague… qui n’est pas drôle, mais qu’il ne faut pas non plus prendre les tee-shirts à message trop au sérieux ;-)

J’aime bien les tees Zoe Karssen aussi, le graphisme est top, mais souvent je passe mon tour à cause du message…

Sinon, j’ai un tee-shirt à message que j’aime beaucoup. Il y a quelques années, je suis allée voir une représentation de Jesus Christ Superstar (que j’adore depuis l’âge vénérable de 8 ans). Et je n’ai pas pu résister : j’ai acheté un tee-shirt sur lequel était écrit “Prove to me that you’re divine”. Souvenir d’un show que j’ai adoré, une “catch phrase” qui m’interpelle : comment j’aurais pu résister!!!
Whenever i see graphic/slogan tees on other people i think they can look really cool, but when i try to find one for myself…it’s another story. As you say Garance, there’s not a lot that i want plastered across my chest, and quite a few that i see on the high street always say cheesy things about love, shopping, boys, blah blah blah! It will forever be my quest to find the perfect graphic tee.

Sachez que derrière toutes ces opérations la consommatrice est trompée et que les grands magasins ZARA…H&M…, boutiques de marques ou fabricants qui vous invitent à ces ventes prennent leurs dispositions pour conserver une marge en se retournant sur leurs fournisseurs ou en fabricant des séries spéciales.La majorité des détaillants multimarques indépendants qui découvrent pour nous les consommatrices à l’affut les coups de cœur pour lesquels on as encore le plaisir d’acheter, ne pratique pas ce genre d’opérations car ils ne veulent ont pas envie de nous tromper. Ils ont pas la même marge de manœuvre que les boutiques de fabricants.
Bref ont peut épiloguer sur ce sujet pendant de longues heures…Je sais pas si certaines peuvent le comprendre ..Pour les indépendant oui …ou Garance Doré…Mais c’est une consommation qui pousse les petit indépendants à mettre la clef sous la porte…10% des emplois menacés …Alors H&M et ZARA moi j’en peux plus…Ensuite ca parle de l’horrible histoire du Bangladesh mais ça achète chez H&M??..et de pollution, et du made in France……Je dis merci à nos vitrines comme celles de toutes les boutiques indépendantes de ma rue ! Et j’espère que les mentalités des consommateurs vont se diriger vers des produits plus juste…

J’en ai deux. C’est des flashs, je les vois, je les veux. Je ne sais pas expliquer pourquoi, mais sûrement parce que c’est vraiment ce que je pense et que c’est léger en même temps. Sur celui que je porte en ce moment même est inscrit “don’t beleive the hype”. L’autre, un gros coup de coeur c’est “in Karl we trust”. Et oui, je crois que la mode c’est bien pour s’inspirer, que c’est beau mais qu’elle ne doit pas être un dogme et j’adore, j’idolâtre Karl Lagerfeld. Est-ce que c’est contradictoire? Naaaan. Karl serait d’accord avec moi…
Don’t believe the hype c’est pas plutôt une référence à Public Ennemy plutôt qu’à la mode ? Enfin pour moi ça restera tjs PE mais bon…

Garance – I know what you mean. Why display personal private stuff on a t-shirt? But actually, you know, that is the whole point of a t-shirt – we get to play, provoke, be ourselves, have fun, confuse, challenge, express, disappear. I like the ones that make people look twice. The ones that are not trying to be clever like the ones you’ve shown, but the ones that have courage, are kind, funny, that open up the personality of the wearer, that allow them to be themselves, to expand themselves. I like Hometown Glory Ts – a little company in London.www.hometownglory.co.uk They are quite new and are doing something really clever yet simple – creating t-shirts of unknown hometowns that are audacious in their content and style, yet they are not trying to be cool. They just are cool. They are just doing their thing. I like that spirit and it feels good to wear their t-shirts.

Une amie prof d’anglais qui faisait passer les oraux du bac a vu arriver un élève avec un tshirt “bullshit” “f** bitch”. Il n’a pas eu une très bonne note. D’où l’importance de comprendre le message du tshirt avant de le porter !
Premièrement pour un garçon c’est plus simple ce genre de truc… Deuxièmement j’ai un ami fan de bon jeux de mots et autres phrases farfelues et qui plus est est un excellant graphiste amoureux de la typographie. Du coup il fait régulièrement des t-texte et j’adore. D’ailleurs lors d’un wkd à Barcelone j’en avais un “maximum top class” ultra graphique et il est pas passé inaperçu ou était ce moi?
Lol funny topic. I say, leave the tees with pointless words to the teenagers. Anyway, it reminds me of wearing tees with the brand name spelled across (which I also associate with middle school lol). Unless it’s something super clever, but I have yet to find any super-clever-to-me sayings sprawled across the chest. However, I’m still a big kid (I’m 20) and will still wear some with animations haha.
My boyfriend and I had a big argument about his tee shirt when we were travelling in Prague. His mother gave it to him and it had a mug shot of President Bush above the words “Wanted War Criminal”. I agreed with the sentiment, but not with offending all the American tourists we passed. We ended up in a little restaurant seated between two groups of what sounded like Americans and I asked him to go and turn it inside out, which resulted in us leaving the restaurant and me pulling it off him in the street. Our most dramatic episode so far. I let him wear it back to our apartment (inside out) and then I cut it up with my nail scissors.
En fait, je ne porte jamais de tee-shirts à inscriptions. Je fais un énorme blocage là-dessus. J’ai l’impression d’être désindividualisée, d’être instrumentalisée au service soit d’une idéologie, soit d’un courant d’opinion, soit d’une marque, etc. En somme, je sens ma personne niée. Ce n’est plus moi, ma personne avec qui les autres entrent en relation, mais avec le message que j’arbore et que quelqu’un d’autre a écrit pour moi (ok, on peut inscrire ses propres messages sur un tee-shirt, c’est vrai). Cela me met très mal à l’aise.
Et je ne parle même pas des noms de marques. Le sweater siglé “Kenzo”, par exemple, je trouve cela carrément attentatoire à la dignité. Porter le nom de quelqu’un et en plus le payer pour cela ?! Personnellement, je refuse d’être une esclave.
Mais je dois quand même reconnaître que le tee-shirt gris de chez H&M n’est pas mal du tout. Graphiquement il est réussi. Bon choix.

My fav printed tee is from Acne, last summer men’s (I always buy men’s tees), and it says “peace” in jumbo gigantic letters on the front. When I found it I thought to myself “now that’s a message I can stand for, and wear on my chest”.
If I’d wear a statement shirt (which I don’t really), I’d choose something funny, but not offensive (in my terms, whatever that means). But, I still have to see that statement shirt I am just so willing to wear.

pour moi, l’inscription me rappelle le billard. la boule #8 est effectivement la noire et celle avec laquelle l’on doit finir.
mais je dois avouer que “la nuit noire”, serait vraiment une bonne déduction aussi !
j’ai un tee-shirt “i’m more attractive than you” au début je le trouvais marrant mais maintenant je le trouve trop méchant ^^. tant pis, sinon j’ai customisé un crop top tout doux sur lequel j’ai écris “lazy day” et ça passe super bien :).
If I wear a T shirt that says something, it’s usually from someplace–a vacation, an event (like a 10K) or, my favorite, a prize for having traveled the farthest to my high school reunion with an inscription that could be taken very wrong in English.
I notice lots of guys where I live in southern France wearing T-shirts that are factory-worn (like there’s a little contrasting fabric band around the neck and it’s all frayed though clearly brand-new) and covered with all kinds of nonsensical English phrases in a sort of retro typeface. I don’t get it.
I also get a laugh out of the fake U.S. university sweatshirts and hoodies with names of schools that don’t exist.
Every year at this time, I buy T-shirts with French inscriptions to take to my family in the U.S. (there are few things that you’re allowed to take on a plane from Europe to the U.S. these days). It gets harder and harder. Logo and message T-shirts are everywhere but everything is in English.

I LOVE statement t-shirts, hoodies and whatever there can be. Right now I’m eyeing one that says ‘Ain’t Laurent without Yves’ by cool russian brand Capslockshop. Their other things are also super awesome and sometimes edgy, true, but this one is soooo desirable)))
I adore patterned Ts! Always so comfortable… slouchy Ts with an animal’s face printed on it, tie-dye, white and black/navy/scarlet stripes, and grey marle, a splotchy burgundy and washed out navy.
My favourite slogan apparel is a very long, loose-fit, deep cyclamen purple singlet with asymmetrical hem past the bottom area, which has hand written on it in boldly sloping writing, “Peace on my Mind”. I always default to that for summer… and will replicate it when it finally falls apart.
A man’s over-sized T with cut off sleeves and cut open neck, on which flies an American eagle against the same country’s flag on a background of tie-dye black and navy, and an olive tie-dye T in the same cut with a huge print of a tiger on the front are my other patterned favourites all year around.
Bright Ts with giant spots, paint slashes (DIY) and bits cut out here (also DIY) are my other wardrobe favourites.
The only plain coloured Ts I have are three white linen Ts (bought seasonally from the very inexpensive Sportsgirl) and a vermillion Bassike slouchy T that I adore wearing with equally bright red skinny jeans.
J’avoue que j’ai toujours mon mot à dire…Donc j’aime bien les T-shirts à clefs.
Là j’en avais trouvé un tout mignon chez Zara: un petit bulldog déguisé en bunny qui disait: no more pictures please. Je ne pouvais pas le laisser là!

En voyant les T’s, mon idée était que le N8 représentait la boule numéro 8 au billard qui est toujours la noire…pour moi ça a du sens, qu’en penses-tu?
J’ai un tee shirt Kookai que j’ai depuis que j’ai 16 ans qui dit: “Je n’en ai jamais assez…” Je l’ai remis récemment mais bon avec les années il est devenu pas mal moulant et genre crop top, mon homme avait l’air dubitatif devant ce message lol!

La N°8 Noire, c’est la boule de billard n°8, qui est noire, et qui est aussi la clé de la victoire au billard ;) !
C’est mon interprétation, mais c’est ce qui m’est venu en premier en voyant ce t-shirt ! Du coup, je le trouve plutôt vraiment cool, moi qui ne suis pas spécialement adepte des t-shirt à messages !
I do like a graphic t-shirt, but mostly band or film/tv tops. I do have a few tops with writing on; I used to have a shirt that said ‘I Carried A Watermelon’, and I currently have one with some Muse lyrics on. I guess I like them to reference something, like a movie quote, rather than just random.
I love this T and have searched 4 H&M’s trying to find it!
since the H&M’s in NY tend to have slightly different things depending on location, maybe you can tell me which one you went to??

Ouh, la, la les t-shirt a messages, moi j’évite.. et oui même si je suis jeune, je devrai tout oser, j’évite vraiment, entre les camarades de classes qui ne savent pas lire l’anglais et les mamies dans les rues qui essayent de lire, pour le bien de tous, il reste dans mon placard!!! Alors que les t-shirt avec des images c’est parfait, surtout les images faussement niaises, genre avec une poupée, un nounours, des licornes, ça c’est top, tout le monde rigole, on te dit “oh il est sympa ton t-shirt” toute la journée et en vrai c’est tellement ridicule de le porter que même ma petite soeur ne veut pas me le piquer!!!
Et sinon UO ils avaient quoi dans la tête quand ils ont mis en ligne ça ?!

je n’ai pas de tee shirt à message car je ne trouve jamais de message qui m’inspire. Je porte plutot des tee shirt à motif, mais pas des photos de gens célèbres. Par contre le “eat less” est un peu flippant en effet. et le va te faire voir, vulgaire… comme beaucoup de tee shirt. En fait, c’est pour ça que je ne porte pas de tee shirt à message. Beaucoup trop de “fuck”, “im a bitch”, etc. Pas mon truc du tout.
J’avoue avoir craque pour un “quit work make music”……la honte, je le porte desormais a la gym…
