My friend Violaine is pregnant (Yeeeey!!!), and all her outfits are so simple and cool that it gives you the feeling that figuring out what to wear when your belly is round is the easiest thing in the world.

Which isn’t true at all, even if Violaine, being naturally thin and can still wear most of her old outfits, there are still a few things that you really can’t avoid. Like maternity jeans for example. These ones are from J Brand and what is funny is that in the beginning, Violaine didn’t even want to hear about it.

It’s funny, I think it’s happened three times now where friends swear that they’ll never walk through the doors of a maternity shop (I don’t know why?) and then finally end up cracking and buying maternity jeans. They put those jeans on and feel alive again.

Interlude I love her shoes.

Voilà!!! Big hugs to Violaine and to all the little babies out there!!! (???)

  • Yes! Now I have little 3 weeks old home, but when
I was preggo I refused to buy maternity clothes! M The only I bought a couple maternity jeans in blue white and black and the rest I used what I could from my or my husband closed! And I’m happy I any ugly maternity tops, they just make you feel big, fat and not yourself:( and not stylish and trendy at all!

Its so nice, when you see pregnant women, that are not wearing some sort of leggings! Actually the clothing thing just makes a headache the last two month. Before you can always wear some of your old clothes (because the real pregnancy clothes you will never wear again afterwards).
With Jeans the best are from Christoff (never buy h & m), they give a hold on the belly.

And in summer its all the time easier to choose the clothes (even if your feet are two sizes larger), because you can wear shirts, skirts and dresses.

  • loved these images… I looove to see stylish women pregnant. i would wear everything even without a baby bump. During my pregnancy i refused to use any maternity clothes i just bought a bigger size jean with a really low waist and 2 size bigger shirts… i did have a dress custom made… never dared to white jeans though… they look great!

  • She looks great and very happy! Pregnancies come in different shapes and sizes, and I think pregnant women always look great. But Violaine looks cool too :)

  • Yes, I love her shoes, too. Where did she find them? Brand? They look so comfortable, pregnant or not!

    Hi Garance,
Based on my experience, I think women refuse to wear “real” pregnancy clothes for two reasons:
1°) Most maternity brands design maternity clothes thinking “Mummy” and not “trendy”. Which is slowly changing I admit. But there is a deny of most of these designers that a pregnant woman would like to wear black leather, cool Ts or a clean-cut shirt. Some brands in France seem to sell the whole I-live-in-Neuilly-and-this-will-be-my-fourth-child kit.
2°) Buying from a maternity shop when you are more and more pregnant is like giving up on fashion. You admit you are now too big to keep looking at the new collections, because you are just not able to wear them. Bye-bye favorite designers, yes it is just for one season, but it is still heart-breaking.

  • I think that for many women there is another reason to refuse buying maternity wear: the really nice and stylish stuff is quite expensive, and who would want to/can spend money on something you wear only for a short period of time?

  • I love her style, it’s simple and just perfect!! The first and the last outfit are my favourites

    http://www.thestelstyle.com

  • I totally love her shoes and I want that last outfit!! I’m not pregnant, though. But it just looks so comfortable and lovely! And well, let’s face it, sometime I eat too much and I look like pregnant ;)

    Congrats Violaine!

  • What a gorgeous and stylish mama-to-be indeed! I do hope that I’ll look that hot when I’m expecting!

  • She looks fantastic and I love her style. Ha, I was just the same, “no maternity stuff please”…. but well, I also ended up buying four!!! pairs of maternity jeans and even a dress… ;-) and I was so happy, cause the normal pants are really so uncomfortable after a while. xxx

  • oh, how lovely .. my most congratulations!

Adore her style and that last look, with the polka-dot blouse! xo Cam

Love the shoes too! Any info on their source? Thanks!

  • Awww… she looks so happy and cheerful!

I remember when my mom was pregnant 2 years ago. The thing that I enjoyed the most from her wardrobe was the long dresses she wore during the summer!

Violaine is my all time favourite. She looks stunning as always :)

  • That shirt–with the white jeans–is from the polytechnic college where I currently live! This is the last place I thought I’d see such a thing make an appearance. It works, though. (Not possible for something not to work on dainty, elegant, yet sassy Violaine!)

  • Aww she looks adorable pregnant. I really love the last look. It looks incredibly comfortable yet really chic. Great style and congrats Violaine.

  • That first photo is really perfect. She looks great in all, but the first… Perfect shades and great job.

  • Very stylish pregnant lady! I am pregnant with my second child and have found it quite hard to find decent maternity clothes, but ended up buying some nice dresses in http://www.isabellaoliver.com/maternity-clothes

  • Violaine looks lovely and her outfits are easy and stylish. It is true that in the first part of your pregnancy you think you’d get away with just wearing normal clothes, however, the second half is a rude awakening as you get a LOT bigger than you think and a LOT more uncomfortable. So maternity jeans/trousers and maternity bras (no wires!!!) are really important. I think it’s great that one can find really cool jeans maternity now. They make you feel great and cool, however big you get. Long stretchy fitted tops always look good – everything else makes you look like a tent! Time to accessorize with lots of jewellery to get a different look. I enjoyed being pregnant (twice) and felt really special – full of anticipation. I just went with the glow!

  • I love how she carries herself!

  • Glad you did a maternity post. Just got back from NYC and was shocked by how few women are pregnant there – everyone seems to be pregnant out west.
That said, totally agree that most maternity wear is a huge waste of time. The exception being J Brand jeans and Hatch Collection which does amazing, easy pieces that don’t look like maternity wear. Rick Owens and Anne Demeulemester have great non-maternity pieces that still make you feel like yourself.

  • Fantastic style! I love the simplicity. Great job! Garance, could you do a spring essentials guide for upcoming garden parties, weddings, graduations, and spring events? I need help please. Easy looks that could be dressed up or down. I need a makeover! If only I looked like cool Violaine..

  • I managed someway to never step into a maternity shop, it was hard, but i did it!
the answer: dresses, long shirts, loose jeans and leggings (finally i had an excuse to wear them)
btw, love Viola looks, i want that dotted bra!

I also finally caved and got some maternity jeans, but have been working very very hard at not buying all maternity clothes. Lots of tunics, layering camisoles, leggings etc….so far, so good.

Mais, ça me rassure.
Bref. Merci encore pour cette inspiration !

  • These photographs are so beautiful, and brings so much peace.
She looks so happy at this stage of her life so beautiful …
I want to be very fliz! Beautiful pictures!

Wow, a cool NYC/French girl wearing a NAIT Ooks shirt! Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Athletic teams have the owl mascot. It’s name is called Ook, the Inuktitut word for Snowy Owl. A bit of nerdy Canadian trivia on a glam fashion post :D Thanks Voilane for making a basic T look smashing.

  • Happy pregnancy Violaine! You look fabulous! Thank you for wearing that shirt. :)

Go NAIT Ooks! I work at NAIT, read your blog all the time and a big fan. I was so surprised to see this vintage NAIT Ook shirt! The athletics department we’re all happy and surprised as well. I honestly almost fell of my seat! :)

  • Totally surprised and pleased to see a NAIT tshirt on this site too! What a nice surprise for a Spruce Grove girl! Violanne looks lovely and so happy – so nice to see in a mom-to-be!

    Salut Garance

  • Elizaveta April, 9 2013, 9:47 / Reply

Great pics!) I’m jealous of the choice you get for maternity clothes in NY, not much here, in Dubai..

  • Emilie April, 9 2013, 5:40 / Reply

  • what do you mean, BABIES, Garance???

By the way Congrat’s to Violaine

  • Such a gorgeous woman. The first photo is stunning!
