The story behind this photo is simple.

I loved this awesome top from Zara so much, I wanted to show it to you. That said, I think it’s the kind of piece that’s hard to figure out. Just on it’s own, with it’s embroidered fake leather, it’s just…. uhhh… how should I put this?

So, I thought the ideal thing to do here would be to do a little style session with one of my friends. I took my top to Andi and we played around with some of her clothes and here’s the look we liked the most.

It’s exactly what I’m looking for right now. It’s very of the moment, yet can be worn every day. Easy, comfortable, cool – it’s right up my alley.

Voilà !!! What do you think? Does this make you want to wear embroidered fake leather or what?

————

PS : The top is, of course, from Zara (in stores right now!) and the shirt is from J. Crew (which is from a different season, but hey, it’s easy enough to find a striped shirt). The pants are Stella McCartney and the shoes are Church’s, where else? ;-)

PPS : Andi is a very good friend and she is also the owner of my hair salon in New York City, Three Square Studio.

PPS : The photo in the background is by Eric Ray Davidson.

  • I would personally never have worn in that way, but it looks great on her! That’s why I love styling sessions, it opens up one’s style mind :)

  • I like the watercolor behind her. Who is the painter?

  • It’s actually a photography ! I don’t remember the name os the photographer but I’ll ask her.

  • this girl looks lovely and I’m not a big fan of that Zara top but I have to admit I really like this version with shirt under :)!

  • thanks I paint -just an hobby (watercolor) and love so much the payne grey
Answering your question I love this style it’s pretty and very comfortable…I def. would buy it.

  • I like it, would wear it exactly that way. The only thing is I do not like fake leather. A nappa leather one would be much nicer and comfortable, don’t you think?

  • Hmmm…I like the top on its own.
And I can kind of wrap my head around the button-up shirt underneath it.
But I think having the shirt tucked in (and not sticking out under the peplum) would have cleaned up the look-

Bravo for having the courage to consider a peplum…alas, they’re not meant for all shapes and sizes.

  • I like the idea (and it’s great that you are sharing some styling advice!), but this one’s not for me. I don’t like faux leather, and peplum+my hips=not a great combination :)

  • I thinks it’s a bit of an unexpected way to wear it but it looks amazing on her.

I wish I could do this look. I like peplum shirts and teases in jewel tones.

  • I really love her style!!! she has a different and an amazing style!!

  • teases= dresses (oops)

  • Fantastic look (and captured wonderfully in your photo)—nice work! The pants and the shoes (!) sync perfectly with the peplum top. Have fun with the outfit!

  • Andi has beautiful dreamy eyes.

  • Beautiful woman, beautiful photograph. Would love it even more if the feet were not cropped off. It shrieks class and chic . . .

  • That’s the one thing about being a guy that I keep forgetting (and it bugs me).. it’s OK to go through the closet and try a bunch of different combinations for a hard-to-fit piece. If I bring something home and realise it’s hard to fit, it just goes to the back of the rack and is forgotten about. It’s like, I lack the patience to go through my things and find what works.

  • Elisabeth October, 22 2012, 11:39 / Reply

Ohh, I loove the backgound – gives a dramatic and easy feeling at the same time! Please Garance, would you tell who did it please?

  • She looks great… she rocks with this peplum from Zara
She did a classic chic outfit with a chic twist!

  • This is a really cute idea and I love the look. I wouldn’t look twice at that top on the website but styled like this now I would. I hope you continue these Garance. Besos x

This look somehow reminded me of the Medieval times like if Jeanne d’Arc would wear something like this)

This look good on her and I can imagine that it look good on you as well. On me is a big NO NO…….. XX

Super mignonne =)

  • Sunny Side October, 22 2012, 1:43 / Reply

    xx.

  • I love how she combines feminine with masculine! I would have never thought of wearing a peplum top like this, but I love it, she looks grate, very relaxed.

  • what a beautiful girl!

  • Love this, Garance!! It reminds me of the post you did featuring the bra-lette type half shirt over the white button-up blouse. Great practical advice for a lady wanting to wear current fashions without shocking the town too much (maybe only just a little).

  • I love this photo!!!! And I love the idea of wearing another shirt under a short sleeve peplum top– it’s an idea I actually got from you, Garance!! It’s soooooo cool!!
    xo,
    Ali

  • I did this the other day – only with a wool peplum and a crisp white shirt buttoned up – then I added a vintage brooch on the top button and I tucked the shirt into skinny leather trousers with ankle boots.

  • Benedicte October, 22 2012, 3:11 / Reply

  • Sublime. Love the mix of menswear and super-girly peplum. I have a hard time figuring out some items in my closet, they are outliers, not something that is easily worn. In my case that means, it’s way to girly. So I try to also figure out how to blend them into the rest of my stuff, pants, shirts. Got inspired by this.

Btw, love the timbre of the picture. Is it a special filter that you use.

In fact, do you have infos on cameras that are good for fashion photography? This would be a nice technical piece that I’d really be interested in.

  • Just bought the same top on Saturday- took it out for the evening with a sheer black button up, long sleeves, and a sequined skirt. It was sexy

  • I love the way you’ve dressed down the leather peplum with the striped shirt! Super inspiring, even though I don’t wear peplum

Tu devrais proposer cette rubrique “This is how I would wear…” régulièrement. Super idée.

  • I like what you and Andi created with your peplum vest. That piece is awesome. Thanks Zara!!
I’ve seen Andi photographed all over and she has this way of adding flair to casual looks, making haute couture effortless and everything in between. She is fascinating.

  • She looks beautiful! and she pulls this look off very well!

    http://currentlylovingblog.blogspot.co.nz/

  • Garance, the picture is beyond beautiful, but I am still not convinced that the zara top with that embroidery is going to look anything like this in real life. I loved how u wore the maroon peplum with the kenzo shirt. On my, to do styling list. Thanks for writing and sharing

  • Andi looks absolutely beautiful :-) xx

  • Brilliant styling and photo, Garance! I was skeptical of the peplum too, but in your hands it’s gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous. I have that striped shirt and feel I must defend its virtues, though, as it’s really quite special. :) Yes it’s “just J.Crew,” but it’s not a generic basic–more important to the outfit than you think! Lovely GREY (not black) and white striping, ever so slightly sheer (which comes through gorgeously in your photo), a half buttondown/half tunic silhouette, and the button tabs on the sleeves are fantastic used or not (in fact, you see it above–the fact that your styling didn’t even bother to do up the tabs, even though the sleeves are scrunched high enough for it, even adds an extra feeling of insouciance to the ensemble).

Also, it’s woven silk which gives different drape than either your typical super soft/loose crepe/dupioni silk, and the stiffer creasing of ordinary ironed or starched cotton. So the “medium drape” would’ve looked particularly good against your embroidered faux leather (scary)–neither too hard nor too soft. I think a different striped shirt would’ve probably looked awkward and over-formulated, rather than effortless and chic like this combo!

(Also, that shirt is machine washable. It’s basically Shirt Superman. Don’t hate on it, I know you dislike dry clean only! :) ).
