zara-bag

The Question Is…

11 years ago by

Can you guess where this bag came from?

It’s from Zara. When I saw it, it was all alone on the shelf, like all their cult pieces that we talked about before. I jumped at it in a passionate rage. Of course, it reminded me of an Isabel Marant piece, or maybe a particular Prada collection, yeah, and a Miu Miu collection too…

A few hours later, at dinner with Aurélie… “Oh, how cool is your bag!!? Is it Prada?!”
And then the next day, at breakfast with Delphine, my agent, she said, “Who made your bag? Isabel Marant?”
Then again later, in the street, “Love your bag! Miu Miu, right?!”

My response every time was, “Ummm, nope! It’s Zara. See? What do you think? It’s inspired, but not a total copy, right? Or do you think this a big step backward for my fashion karma*? Or should I just not care? What does it all meeeeean? I’m so looooooooost. Heeeeeeeeeelp!!!”**

What do you think? Should I keep wearing it or toss it into the pile of shame***?

————

* I don’t talk like this in real life. I’d never say fashion karma. Who knows why the written word makes me so cheesy.

**Okay, I just said thank you to the person who stopped in me in the street.

*** The pile of shopping errors. You really don’t want to know what’s been tossed on the pile. Birkenstocks maybe? Nope, not yet at least. But never say never.

    http://www.pose-mag.fr/2012/08/n13-en-ligne-special-anniversaire/

  • OMG ! Il est vraiment trop canon ! Sans aucun doute à garder !

    http://en-mode-parisienne.com/

  • That’s the reason I only buy classic pieces from Zara. I never buy their trendy, “inspired by” pieces.

  • Zara! :)

  • Who cares! If you look good in it and it makes you feel good, rock it!

You know, most of fashion is a copy and an evolution of another persons idea. ^.-

  • I agree! Just rock it without shame (my initial guess was Prada or Mui Mui too!)

  • Nooooooooooooo why do you toss it!!It’s so cute and like a piece of art ,
If 3 peoples guess different brands so it means that the brands either copied each other or got inspiration from each other so let it go and just enjoy the bag

    Deal?!
    n.

  • I say keep it or give it to me! :) No , just kidding of course. For me, I don’t like it when it’s obvious where they stole the design from. Also, if it’s obvious, then I’ve seen the design before, and I don’t like all things. I always go for things I’ve never seen before, so by definition they can’t be copies :)

  • Isabel Marant and Miu Miu also took inspiration or copied or whatever you wish, from older brands and models -often literally and shockingly- but only Zara gets sent to the naughty step.

I see Seville, Gypsies and flames in that bag. Also vintage Balenciaga and yes, contemporary Miu Miu.

Luxury houses should be judged by the same standards as the high street.

  • Couteau, I agree!

  • Yes, yes, yes! You are completely, right? There are so many things that this design can be contributed to and I think the way that Zara has interpreted it, is a credit to them. The same can be said of Balenciaga, Prada and the like. On the contrary, like you wrote, all companies should be judged equally when it comes to originality and inspiration.

I say keep it, Garance. I mean, you wouldn’t really toss a bag, would you?

And on another note, I am one of those horrible people who never tells people the brand of my clothes, even if is a high end brand.

  • If one of Christopher Bailey’s critically acclaimed collections can be blatantly inspired by the African Chitenge then surely you can carry around a Prada inspired Zara bag.
Even the Marni collection for H&M had a few items inspired by the chitenge.

    see this link (first dress)

What is so sad is that the other day on the BBC documentary I saw a poor woman wearing a chitenge and immediately I was reminded of this print.

Isn’t it awful that I thought of a luxury brand when I saw a poor woman’s clothing? This is when I am glad you cannot patent fashion.

  • Garance, a few time ago I wrote a post on this subject. I think that you should hold your new bag!

oh yes, I second Anniek, this is Zara! They have ballerinas with this exact “western” pattern! I’m not quite sure it like it, though…

Enfin, si Buffalo Bill avait porté des sacs à main, of course.

  • ahh I stood in the ZARA with this bag in my hands a little while ago as well. absolutely loved it! unfortunately it costs more than my monthly clothing allowance (yes, I give myself clothing allowance. it’s the only way I’m still able to do my grocery shopping at the end of the month.) I’ll have to wait for the wintersales. Only 5 more years till I’m not a student anymore! Ha.

but I think it’s totally ok to use this bag. like you say, it’s not an exact copy. it’s inspired. and more importantly, it’s very cool.

I’ve always wondered what the big deal is about buying copies. Is it because you have to support the designers? Do they really need SO MUCH money? Or is it because people in the fashion industry raise their eyebrows at people who buy their Prada-bags at Zara? Or is there something else I’m missing? I don’t mean this to attack you or the fashion industry, I’m just really wondering what the problem really is.

  • I say if you like it and it looks good, then work it girl (in my american voice) which is very hard for me. I like it! Stop saying that you are going to get rid of your Birkenstocks, maybe if you wore them and rocked them, they would be become a fashion statement and everyone would say ‘Garance wears them, so I am’.

  • Remember Meryl Streep’s ‘cerulean’ speech in The Devil Wears Prada? This bag is just part of the fashion food chain!

I don’t mind when it is just a derivation but blatant copies are sad for the designer and the consumer who paid hard earned money for the ‘real thing’.

  • Yes I love that comparison and it’s very true…

  • I don’t think it’s sad for the designer or the owner of an original, at least in the case of derivative pieces done by Zara or H&M. In most situations, the designer isn’t losing money because their client will buy their piece over the knockoff, and the purchaser has a beautiful, quality piece that’ll last. I’m sure they don’t see a twinge of regret when they encounter a poorly made imitation with the shelf life of a few months or a year. I do think it’s really sad, though, when smaller designers are knocked off by larger ones. Look at Bliss Lau. Her body chains and crocheted metal were so original at the time, and Erin Wasson ‘created’ exact copies in the beginning for LowLuv.

  • Zara collections is always the same, their ”inspirations” for the collections is almost the same original pieces!!

    http://www.thestelstyle.com

  • The thing is it looks so Prada or Marant on you, the Queen of good taste. On me it would probably scream out Zara or even cheaper Primax. I believe that what makes a huge difference between High Street and Fashion houses is probably something you can’t see in a picture, even in your perfect ones: textures, odours, weight, sewing, the inside… Oh yes, the feeling of your hand inside the bag.

  • Voza I agree and on that chapter, a lot of designer bags are very disappointing…

  • Isn’t it said that imitation is the highest form of flattery? It still boggles me why affordable lines shouldn’t let themselves be inspired by luxury lines and transform those concepts into more ready-to-wear affordable looks. In my view, that is how fashion is meant to work. Luxury lines exist to inspire small lines. (Come on, so much of what they design is better as a concept that as an outfit). There is a big different between someone selling a fake Prada bag and someone selling an item inspired by Prada.

I agree with Couteau that Luxury houses (and all designers really) take inspiration from other places and people. That’s art. It’s interconnected and messy. There is never anything like true “purity” in art. I think that this is part of what makes it so fun and interesting, noticing all of the different inspirations that a designer has used to make something their own.

You should be proud to have the eye to pick out a good bag from Zara that is mistaken for a bigger name brand. It reflects good taste on your part and good design on theirs.

I agree with most of the comments. Prada/Miu Miu/D&G/Etc. how convenient that they all look the same, so add Zara to the pile of rocking accessories (not the pile of shame) and enjoy it for a while. The problem is the fake bags with a Prada label stitched to it purchased on Canal street from some guy in a van. (guilty! and reformed :-))
But that bag looks gorgeous and expensive–maybe that’s why you’re getting all the compliments!

Enjoy the bag and at least it will be a way to introduce any conversation ;)

THE QUESTION IS: Do I feel the same when I wear a Margiela piece and when I wear a H&M x MMM ?
    xx
    Nathalie
    http://www.lettreaelise.com

  • Clothilde November, 28 2012, 9:44 / Reply

Au pire si tu en as honte, je le veux bien moi :)

  • If you like it and it makes you happy that is all that matters. And the fact that you got it for a fraction of what you might normally spend is just icing on the cake. I am a huge fan of Zara, but it is true that I tend to go for the more subdued basics rather than the big eye-catching pieces from there. On the other hand, right now I’m looking at their harem pants:

    http://nomadic-d.blogspot.com.es/2012/11/harem-revival.html

so maybe I should just eat my words! Basically what I’m saying is, the whole point of the ‘democratization of fashion’ is to have access to options, and if you love it, then it was meant for you. Don’t overthink it!

  • Although my first thought was PRADA, PRADA, PRADA… I would say keep it and rock it. Because nowadays almost everything has been already made and everything what we see have some kind of inspiration from somewhere. OK, it might be true that for few things it is more obvious then for other…. but this is not a complete copy… and its level of cuteness might just make an exception!

    http://www.madarafreimane.blogspot.com

    http://www.whatdialike.blogspot.com

  • J’adore ce sac :) ! Tu devrais le garder!

    XX
    http://lauralexo.blogspot.com

  • Keep it! Western style with flames is hardly a creation of Prada or Mui Mui-which are Italian brands who were inspired by the western look of Texas and whatnot. Fashion these days is hardly original and everyone is inspired by something else they saw, you shouldn’t feel ashamed to have to bought it!

  • Why on earth would you toss it? It’s a pretty bag. Does everything in one’s closet have to cost over a thousand dollars to be worthy of wearing? If you don’t want it, email me, and I will buy it from you. I love it.

  • I think that have a great style means only how to wear and match and feel good! That’s why with a Zara bag you can be admired as well as with a Prada bag and I feel very proud of myself when everyone notes my Zara or H&M look!!

    http://whiteindoor.blogspot.it

  • “The Birkenstocks” — You had A good idea there for a moment and may have lost it !

  • Honestly, Zara’s pretty awesome. In my humble city in Manila, Philippines, Zara is quite expensive and has nothing of the stigma it seems to have in wealthier countries. If anything, it almost has the opposite effect here. Like if you’re wearing something from Zara, you must be fashionable and probably well-off. I get how its being a fast fashion brand doesn’t appeal to people who buy luxury goods often but I’m just saying, Zara is really not all bad :))

  • Since everyone’s saying different designers that it reminds them of… it’s a keeper. A knock off is cleary a replica of a specific print/brand/design/etc. Not necessarily a collaboration of amazing designers who followed a look/trend for a season. Super cute!

    xoxo

  • Keep it & be honest about where it comes from. Inspired by is different from very close copies, which can be very destructive for independent designers. In the UK there has been more than one case of a designer put out of business trying to protect their design from a major high street chain. If you can find great items at Zara be happy. In each case, it’s value at the price point. Some top end items are original and beautifully made and some mass items are great value and fun; both can be value at the price point, but I feel that many things in the mid range, which are mass produced, are very expensive for what they are…

  • See? That’s the kind of piece that I never buy. I see it (in fact, I saw it) I touch it, I try it surreptitiously (sorry for that word, it’s horrible, but that’s what my dictionary said when I looked for “disimuladamente”) and then I leave it right where I found it. I guess I’m all for basicneutralclassicIwanttobeareallyelegantgrownupbecauseI’mamanagernow pieces…
But yeah, I miss all the fun. And all the compliments!

    http://www.isatoutsimplement.org

  • you know what, when I first saw the picture of this bag, I thought it was a necklace… and a very pretty one!!
Judging from the appearance, it is a fairly pretty bag. But I really hate it when Zara copies design from other brands (and that’s basically what it does all the time) and it made products of really low quality. Disregarding this aspect, it is a fun bag. Wether to keep it or toss it? It actually depends on what you care most, the quality, the brand or the design?

  • SHAME??? Are you kidding me? Being fashionable is not all about designers and stuff (and the fact that they attached it with 3 different brands proves how the big brands copy each other!!!), buying only high brand stuff cuz of the brand is being a SNOB. Not being fashionable.
I love it. I would deff buy it !!!!!

  • Bonjour Garance,

  • The Question Is… WHO CARES??

  • Exactly right! Who cares if you have a zara bag or wear birkies so long as feel good. Hmmm, problems of the first worl I guess…

  • I simply refuse to buy bags (even some clothes) in Zara, because of its clothes’ low quality – but that bag is absolutely eye-catching (like many their pieces of garb). And what strikes me is the fact that all of “I-am-still-looking-for-my-style-but-in-mean-time-look-like-anyone-on-the-street” ordinary girls looks exactly the same (in Poland). The same “Zara-styled bag”. In addiction to this, I will never buy a bag in Zara because of my squarely ideological thinking.
Sometimes my complaining gets tedious, but it gives me motivation to sew my own bag. And even if it were a “Zara-styled-bag”, it would be made from pure leather, not some mix of leather/dermo/polyester, as I call it “stereo and video”.
    xo!

  • I totally agree with Sara, who cares where it’s from? It’s beautiful and a statement piece. I would say. keep it! xx

    http://www.creativityandchocolate.blogspot.com

  • Sandrine from Toulouse November, 28 2012, 10:45 / Reply

Pour moi the only question is …est-ce qu’il va pas déteindre sur les couleurs claires sinon moi je dis j’achèèèèèèèèèèèète !!!

  • antoinette November, 28 2012, 10:49 / Reply

I love it! it is a wonderful pice of art!!!! wear it if it feels good! Everything out there is a ciopy…..BIG HOUSE or little house. xoxo

  • Nan mais franchement Garance…!! Comme le dit précédemment Sara “Who cares???” Ce sac t’a plu? Et bien je dis “choix validé!”. Point de honte quand on aime! ;)

  • Keep it…

    At least for awhile longer.

It’s simple with a hint of kick-your-a** attitude.

  • it’s zara:)

    http://www.thesartorialist.com/photos/all-the-pretty-photographers-mix-print/

    http://www.zara.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product/fr/fr/zara-W2012/269200/928548/SAC%20%C3%80%20BANDOULI%C3%88RE%20ORN%C3%89%20D%27APPLIQUES

donc moi je dis, bonne pioche!

  • Once you have bought it already, it would be ridiculous not to wear it just on the basis that it looks like a high fashion wannabe. Somebody’s work and some animal’s skin would simply go to waste if the bag will stay forgotten in a corner :) (smiley, yes). And it’s a very cute bag!

What I have in mind recently about clothes is how they were made. In all this frenzy to acquire cool things one should think for a moment about the process behind them. Yes, design and originality is an important part. But if Zara not only that it copied the design of the bag, but it also made it in a sweatshop just so we can have an affordable taste of fashion, then I wouldn’t feel very good about that. Or if the people who work to make Prada, Miu Miu or Marant are paid poorly/have bad working conditions, then no cool design in the world can save that for me. Yeah, it sounds hippie and against the superficiality that being a fashionista implies. But I guess it’s good to be interested about where your fashion comes from, in the same way you care about your food.

The point I’m trying to make is that respecting the designer isn’t everything. We have to respect all the people that worked in the chain that worked so we could own a pretty thing. And most of the times, that’s not as obvious as an “inspired by” tag.

PS: The short version: the bag is a keeper.

  • I agree with Georgina that once you have it, it’s better to keep and use it (or if you really feel icky about it, pass it along to someone else before its shelf life comes to an end) because the manufacturing standards and processes are pretty gruesome a lot of times. There have been more fires in Bangladesh factories lately, even this week, and of course none of them have been Zara-related but it would be foolish not to consider that a possibility. More reasons to have a smaller collection of the best you can afford rather than a large wardrobe of “affordable.”

  • Oh yes, I think it should be your fashion karma! ahahhahaha

    http://lifeincurl.blogspot.com

  • i’ll take your “pile of shopping errors” … with pleasure.

  • Good style is not about labels, its about wearing what you love with confidence.

    Bises,

  • I think I would feel uncomfortable wearing it, simply because it is so obviously copied. Kind of hard to explain but it just the feeling that it is not ‘an original’.

  • Hey Garance!
I saw the bag at Zara two weeks ago or so and I loved it! You should totally keep it, it looks so confident and powerful :)

  • It’s pretty so it doesn’t matter :)
    bisous

  • Every once and a while I think it’s okay to have an “inspired by…” piece. I mean, if your whole wardrobe was like that it would be weird. I love this bag, by the way, and have been coveting the matching pointed flats!!

    on Couleur Spleen.

  • It’s ok, there are some pieces that you don’t want to invest because you know you will get tired of them next season

  • Excellent achat!

  • If you like it, you should wear it. Your doubts are what I find rather ‘pathetic’, or bad for your fashion karma, to use your words; if you only buy high end brands because they are expensive, or because they happen to reinvent a print that has been existing for ages, you should question your style; if it fits you, it shouldn’t matter where it’s from, or how much it costed. If it fits you, it fits your style and you should wear it with pride!
PS: if you want to come across a bit more chique, you could always get your bag very dirty and tell everyone it’s vintage, haha

  • I’m so worried about Zara… Greenpeace says some of their collections are made with hazardous materials. But I LOVE their clothes!!! What do you think about the Greenpeace argument, will you avoid Zara until they detox their items or do you think it’s sensationalism? SO confused.

There are two types of girls : those that can make cheap clothes look expensive and those that make designer clothes look cheap. »

  • I will tell you what I think about your Zara bag, even though I believe there is no way, with your busy schedule, you will read comment number 97. But, here it is anyway. You should wear your bag whenever you feel like it and say it’s Zara if you are asked. Designers are inspired by one another all the time and I am sure Zara has talented designers that some times take a trend a step further creating amazing items. You just need a good eye to spot them. I will remind you Amancio Ortega has been placed third on Bloomberg’s latest list of the world’s richest people.

  • I love it ! Everything is inspired by something else…. its playful and not a “knockoff” (yuck!) Love it up and embrace the high low mix ! Don’t overthink it…..

  • He he, I saw it at Zara long time ago, and striaght away I knew that I saw it somewhere before..the Isabel’s collection of course:)) Its lovely, but I guess I would get bored with it pretty soon. And it is suede, which ages not very prettily. So, a big no for me:) But you go girl!!!:))

  • Keep it!! Who cares? Exactly like everyone else said before. I can see tossing it out because it is a total knock off or has an actual fake label. This is inspired by, which is a compliment to Mui Mui, Para, etc. Work it!

  • Nini Piccola November, 28 2012, 1:11

Oh, and I stole that from a blog called http://www.iloveyourstyle.com

  • Someone said it looks like Seville/Spanish/Gypsy influence. To me, it looks like a beautiful artsy interpretation of a rodeo shirt! I was thinking you might say it was from a tiny shop in Texas!

  • encore Zarraaaa !!

Nuance !!

  • Please keep the bag. Remember that moment when you ran up to it hurriedly and without hesitation. Wear it with that thought in mind, and whenever someone asks you, tell them your crazy story about how it was the only one of its kind in Zara. If anything they will be amazed at your ability to find the treasures at Zara!

Take care!

  • I think what Zara does is ok, because everyone knows the quality is different than the real design items and they don’t pretend to be something else ( no fake logos or anything)
    It’s a cool bag

    http://www.tripsandtreasures.net

  • All brands have so nice pices. Like that. Have a great day.

  • I know you love your Zara (and generally I agree with you), but aside from their creative copying issues, there are some other things about Zara that bother me more. Like this, for example: http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/en/campaigns/toxics/detox/zara/

To me, this is more irresponsible and unethical than a case of who-copied-what-first. Just sayin’.

    – moira

  • J’ai le sac et les ballerinas. Très cowgirl. J’aime beaucoup et mes amies aussi. Alors, je dirai: go for it, girl!!

  • I agree with Voza regarding one thing – if you would be wearing this bag it’s a bit different because you have a good taste so immediately this bag gets a different look on you … but in my opinion it’s not the question whether it’s zara, prada or whatever … in this particular case I do not think this bag is your style … (and I appreciate your style a lot because it’s defined and in my opinion coherent with your personality (as long as I am allowed to give any opinion not knowing you personally ;)) that’s one point
the other point is the “inspiration” who is inspired by whom … ha ha ha … this is in my opinion bla, bla talk because there are really not so many people now who would wear sth ONLY because they like it, especially fashion bloggers (sorry), now-a-days it’s really sometimes like a brand contest … but I know you’re aware of it, you had a discussion about it and street fashion, in the car, on one of the videos …
    greetings !!!

  • i know exactly what feeling you’re talking about. but if its cute just rock it!

    http://newbornfanatic.wordpress.com/

  • wear it, it s amazing!

    Petite anecdote :

    Bref !

  • Hello Garance!you always pick up great pieces-i think i need to check out my zara store :)))

  • When I saw the picture, I thought Miu Miu!
As for me, I try as much as possible to steer clear of close copies of designer stuff when I shop at Zara. But hey if you like it, I think you should carry it.
And if you don’t feel comfortable carrying it, then you can toss it in the pile of shopping errors…God knows one isn’t really living if one doesn’t have a pile of shopping errors.

    http://www.stylishevafter.blogspot.com

  • it only shows that you are not a snob or fashion victim and this is exactly why we love you

  • Hey Garance, the print is totally inspired to last year’s Carven gargoyle pull!

  • “The question is, where do you draw the line” c’est pas du Dirty Dancing ça ? ;-)

    http://cargocollective.com/mlleeuge

  • This is an old dilem, but we can’t forget nothing is really original anymore, right? even high fashion designers get inspired by another designers or collections, so… if you like it, then why you should feel ashame? I guess it’s a little different when you work in fashion or live in a fashionable enviroment :) but in our normal lifes, who cares! it’s an amazing bag, enjoy it!

  • Who knew Zara could inspire so much moral theology. I frequently find myself wanting to take home a whole pile of things but the moment I start culling things due to too much ‘influence’ or ‘inspired by’ I end up with one lonely white tee.

Probably explains why I have so many white t-shirts.

  • I knew immediately it’s from ZARA when first saw the picture. Love the design and color, but not sure about the quality as most of their bags are not made of leather or not made of fine leather. I am living in Buenos Aires and the bags here are made of good leather but the design is not the most stylish :(

  • At the end, what do you like? The brand itself, or the design? If you fall in love for any colletion its because of the designs, details, etc. Then with not just wear the design, without the huge amount of money that the designers make you pay, and just enjoy it? Isn’t taht what’s fashion about? Just love what you are wearing and feelling pretty? I think it’s kind of a tribute to the designers “I really really like what you do and create, but can’t afford it, so here I am supporting you!” ahah

  • toss it to the pile!

  • Up until a few weeks ago I would have said hold onto it – being someone who has no chance of affording the real thing, I probably would have jumped on it myself! However I read this article on Zara on November 9 in the Times’ T Magazine: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/11/magazine/how-zara-grew-into-the-worlds-largest-fashion-retailer.html?pagewanted=all
I highly recommend making an informed choice over an instinctive one in this case. Zara is a place that pumps out nice-looking but unoriginal clothes constantly to feed people’s need for conspicuous consumption – maybe there’s a dash of creativity somewhere but it’s only for the sake of copyright laws. I think the fact that it forces designers to pump out so many collections each year is a real reason not to buy there. Imagine how much more thoughtful, inspiring and original designers could be with their collections if they came out with only two instead of six each year (as they are now required to do in order to break even)?

    I’m curious what you think!

  • Jane with the noisy terrier November, 28 2012, 11:30 / Reply

I knew it was Zara because I bought the cowboy boot ballerinas in the same pattern this fall. Unlike other readers, I’d rather get trendy pieces at Zara that I can pass along guilt free when the fad fades, rather than spend $1000+ on items that are so closely identified with a particular season. My investment dollars go towards basics from Jil Sander and seasonless pieces from Dries.

  • Tammy Pearce November, 29 2012, 1:19 / Reply

    Sorry, it’s a Prada rip-off for sure!

  • To be honest I immediately associate it with Miu Miu but thought it wasn’t made with high materials because of the suspicious red! hahaha My eye is well educated :p I love it and remember “it’s not the clothes but the person who is wearing them” (My grandmother always tell me that) so keep it!

La copie de designers, no way!

  • When I first saw the picture, I initially thought it was Prada.

You know it’s a beautiful piece, so why throw it away?

  • Salam Garance.

    xxx

  • Better think twice before buy it, than toss it away! You liked it that particular moment when you bought it, wear it with pride! It’s your low-budget trophy!

    Zut :)

  • Tu les portes, of course!!!

  • Keep!!!!!

“Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery – celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from – it’s where you take them to.”

    ? Jim Jarmusch

  • Cool ! Garde le. J’aime beaucoup. XX

  • haha, I definitely thought, “prada … no, miu miu… no, it’s probably vintage… or is it vintage prada…?” I say if you like it and no one reacts badly when you say it’s from Zara, keep it! Zara is good at designing things to look..designer. That’s the truth!

  • Elizabeth November, 29 2012, 7:33 / Reply

If it’s true that three different people guessed 3 different designers, I say it’s “inspired by” but not copying, so you may keep it.

    You’re welcome.

PS you can toss the Birkenstocks on the pile of whatever, you won’t hurt MY feelings.

  • Wasn’t a key piece of advice for shopping at Zara to skip the pieces that were basically designer imitations?
In the case of ‘inspired by’ versus ‘imitation of’…I’d say that this bag is a little too close to the latter for comfort.

I’d advise on being consistent in approach. If imitations are ok – then they’re ok. But they can’t be verboten one week/post and then a-ok the next…

  • Return it, Garance. It’s a screaming wannabe Isabel Marant/Prada/MiuMiu!

  • I love it. That said I bought the cutest, cutest bag at Zara this summer. Like you, got multiple comments each time I wore it. Everyone thought it was designer something. Although it was not on trend and was an apparent inspiration of everything.

And then one day it drizzled a bit and the paint came off the leather on one side of the purse! Ugh.

  • wow. a Zara bag

  • for the very 1st look i said Prada! i didn’t even finished Pra.. and said Zara! of course.., okay..whoo caress?!! ha?! the bag is absolute beautiful everyone likes it and talks about it and thinks it’s a high fashion bag so it should makes you a little bit happy inside cause you’ve got for like how much..?? cost you nothing really comparing it to Prada or Isabel, bottom line.. don’t worry.. be HAPPY! and yeah i Love Zara :D

  • Mes copines m'appellent SUSAN! November, 30 2012, 7:41 / Reply

Garaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaance!!!!! That’s the question!!!!!! .

  • I suspect that you will always feel a little less than about it.
Because they can’t possibly produce luxury at a high street price point. But you should keep it, because it is beautifully designed aesthetically. You don’t need the badge surely…

  • Why would you throw this? It’s not like Isabel Marant, Prada or Miu Miu came up with those cowboy motifs, the aesthetic doesn’t ‘belong’ to them. In fact, my first guess was “that bag is vintage”.

It’s beautiful, who cares if it’s prada or zara what matters is if you like!

    Kiss from Lisbon :)

  • dearest garance, the thing i’ll remember most of all your blog columns is your comment on not buying cheap copies. You convinced me, that it’s just wrong and shows no respect. and thats what zara (et all) is all about. just wrong and no respect. oh, not to mention, slavery, pollution and garbage bags full of stuff that never actually looked good, but, to be honest, rather cheap. PLEASE, PLEASE, DON’T EVER WEAR ANYTHING LIKE THAT AGAIN. LIKE EVER.

YOU ROCK !

  • Well, you can still wear it Garance but yeah, looking at the photo, it is PRADA/Miu Miu that started that style so Isabel Marant certainly got a lot of inspirations from that!

  • you love it, don’t you? if it’s inspired by a designer you can’t exactly pinpoint, then it is completely the point of the buy. it looks good but no one can tell where you got it from :) unless of course they shop at zara.
