Last week, I popped over to Marina’s apartment in Brooklyn– she’s due any day now to have her second baby! I love her pregnancy style, it’s really simple and it’s all things she can wear again after she has her baby. She told me that she never really invested in anything “maternity” but instead just bought bigger sizes and wore her husbands clothes.

A few of her style essentials?

– A drawstring pant. These ones from 1.61 are unisex, they are like a cool mom maternity khaki.
Equpiment blouses in a size medium or large. They will look cool and oversize so you can wear them even at your bgigest. Afterwards, they are good to have when breastfeeding.
– A sexy flat. Your ankles will start to swell. No matter how cute or chunky the heel is, it’s not going to work.

She looks lovely but her bump is tiny! Mine looked that big at 4 months… so draw string pants and large shirts were fine until I was about 6 months preggers, then clothes looked more like tent dresses and at least some pregnancy clothes were a must.
Also, personally I just didn’t want to wear pregnancy clothes once I was done breast feeding. :-)

  • I love her cute maternity style! That ruffled shirt is fabulous!

  • Marina- what a classy lady! Her style is impeccable. Great rainy Monday post!

I agree that her bump is especially tiny. She is super lovely, but I don’t want women to get too into the idea of being able to wear size medium or large shirts as the answer to maternity wear. Having been pregnant three times, I can tell you that most women will not be able to do that. Only the tiniest of the tiny can do that, and they’re very lucky. Also, silk blouses for breastfeeding made me laugh out loud. They’ll be ruined in seconds by the milk that (sorry, girls) leaks!

  • Thank you for pointing this out! Marina looks lovely but is obviously a tiny tiny person to begin with. I wear a size large in Equipment blouses NOT pregnant, so definitely would not work for me or most women.

Also, laughing about wearing silk shirts when nursing…not to mention baby spit up too.

  • Inspirant pour une prochaine grossesse!

  • Soon, Garance will have a baby ;)

  • I love the pictures but at leats in my case right before giving birth, I went from 120 Lbs to 160 Lbs and I looked very different from Marina… I did avoid maternity wear but for trousers. Still quite different sillouette.

  • Will be a beautiful mother!

  • Hi Garance. Nice post. I am pregnant myself and would love to see more of blog posts about pregnant women/mom’s styles. Thanks!

Her necklace! It’s got my name. :)

  • Every pregnant girl is the most beautiful woman in the world.

  • I loove the photos and how superbly relaxed Marina looks, also the embroidered dress is beautiful! I know matching mother daughter outfits tend to be horrific, but I can see Marina in Elisa Sednaouis capsule collection Little-a-like quite well. For a glimpse click http://www.fairaporter.com Sunny side up! Alex

  • I don’t understand why some women absolutely want to avoid maternity clothes. We don’t live in former times when you could only get ugly things! There are many brands that create absolutely nice, stylish and comfortable maternity clothes.
I guess for most pregnant women it is impossible to wear just bigger sized jeans. I tried with my husbands jeans during pregnancy and it was absolutely uncomfortable and impossible in the last months. Invest in a nice maternity jeans, it’s worth the money!
And: To wear “normal” clothes in a bigger size does not look nice when you have a huge bump, e.g. T-Shirts look like a tent on you.

Anyway, Garance I really like your blog and I’m a very loyal reader :-) Cheers!

  • I agree with you. I’ve never been pregnant, but i worked in h&m and i talked to lots of pregnant woman about how great are these clothes. It doesn’t matter if you wear a bigger size, it will still cut your stomach, simply because the waist line is right in the middle of your bump.

This post made me laugh. She looks absolutely lovely, but I am 40 weeks pregnant and not that big, but way, way too huge to get into anything that is merely a size or two up. I even grew out of some of my maternity clothes. My uniform these days is stretchy dresses. Thank god for ruching.
