ana kras street style garance dore phone photos

9 years ago by

Last week, I saw my friend Ana on the street. I was coming back from a meeting, and I didn’t have my camera with me, but thought she looked so chic that I decided to try taking a photo with my phone.

I had noticed that the iPhone 6 camera was pretty amazing. I’ve been looking for years for alternatives to my big heavy Canon, a small camera I could carry everywhere with me, and I hadn’t found the perfect one. Until, one day, I gave up. I preferred the photos I was taking with my phone to the ones I was taking with these small, complicated and very expensive cameras I was trying.

I’m talking iPhone because that’s what I use, but I’ve tried the Samsung and the quality is just about as crazy.

Okay, we are still far from the 5D… But, not that far!

I love that technology is putting such cool tools in the hands of everyone. What do you think ? Do you still use a traditional camera ?

It’s a great shot. Why mine taken with my phone (Samsung) are so utterly hopeless?

  • Hello Garance!

Go runners!!!

I’ve been leaving my lunky camera at home and taking pictures with my iPhone. I’ve been amazed by the quality and there are so many cool apps for photo editing out there!

  • Photography is not a crime!

  • Your just proved one needs an Iphone and talent.
It’s not only about the quality of equipment.
I love it: very nice shot and colours!!

  • I sometimes take pictures from my Samsung Galaxy Alpha camera for my blog cos I don’t want to carry my big camera everywhere and the results are not so bad. Thank God for Instagram!!

  • J’adore son look!

  • Amazing that you can take such a great shot with a phone and you’re right, you always have this little thing with you! Sometimes out of the blue a couple of shots on my iPhone 5 are excellent but I prefer relying on my Canon EOS and I love the sound of it! clic clac

  • Photography is not a crime, that’s a nice catch from the corner of your iphone camera!

  • MissPimpin February, 6 2015, 10:15 / Reply

  • Ana was so adorably sweet when I approached her a few months ago during breakfast at a small restaurant in the East Village. An attitude, a small gesture, can make such a difference. Thank you Ana for being so kind.

  • I love that there’s a bumper sticker on the wall/building that says “photography is not a crime”!

  • I think it is still a bit too grainy and the light is not captured in the same beautiful way that you usually manage in your pictures. The style is great however! Sophisticated and original.

  • J’adore le détail en bas à gauche de ta photo : “Photography is not a crime” !

  • Lovely shot! I take all my pictures for my blog lifestylenotes.nl and my instagram account with my iPhone 6. It’s just so easy to use and the camera works great! Also the app features to fine tune your shot are limitless in the app store.

  • La dame elle s’habille chez Emmaus ?

  • So, I don’t use a D5 because they’re so heavy and expensive and have all of these bells and whistles that I, who mainly takes product and lifestyle photos, don’t need. I use a mirrorless system camera, just one, with a few different lenses when I know I need a photo with good resolution.

I love my iPhone 6 camera, it’s amazing, the light is always perfect and balanced. But I notice that the resolution isn’t good when you look at the photos on anything bigger than an iPad mini. Your photo above is wonderfully composed, great light, &etc, but the resolution isn’t very crisp.

Still, I got rid of my other in-between cameras because all I need is an iPhone and a mirrorless!!

  • THAT BAG! Anyone know is it vintage or can I find it somewhere in stock?

  • Lisa Walker February, 6 2015, 12:18 / Reply

First of all, I want to be her. Secondly, I’m shooting all the photos for my cookbook with my iPhone(!) I love my point-and-shoot personal Leica but the iPhone has a readiness that doesn’t interrupt the process and the quality is great (not that I am a photographer, but for someone like myself!?). I post to Instagram (@stovetopped) and love their filters as well. Weirdly enough, it brings me so much damn joy…

    XO, @stovetopped

  • Oh, mon dieu, j’ai exactement ce même sac! Il doit avoir au moins 15 ans, et je ne sais pas où je l’ai acheté. En tout cas, à Madrid. Je l’utilise toujours, je l’aime beaucoup.

  • I love her bag and coat!! So chic!

I had a 35mm canon eos camera that I loved!! I miss it all the time. But I dislike my husbands point and shot canon or Sony cameras, I cannot get good shots with them.
My iPhone 5 not too bad. I keep thinking I want a new camera a real camera like I had but will I lug that around? So for now it’s the iPhone 5.

    Great shot!

  • “The best camera is the one you always have with you”, ever since I read that, my guilt flew away and I now shamelessly take ALL my photos with my iPhone

  • When I travel for pleasure and want to disconnect from the world, I put my iphone in the hotel room safe during the day and take my “old-fashioned” camera with me. When I return to the hotel room, I check the iphone to make sure there were no disasters during the day, and once I see that: “yes, the world goes on without me having 24/7 access to the iphone,” I lock it away again in the safe, go to the bar, and have a wonderful, relaxing drink and dinner. And when I get home, I’ll have photos to enjoy, photos taken while I was enjoying a true vacation from the world!

  • Baby it’s cold out there and this is the way to dress. Love it. I’m torn about the camera thing but I love having an iPhone 6 plus with me at all times in case I want to capture the moment. I still love the ability to pull out the big guns with my expensive canon but the ease and convenience of having a carry around camera is so nice.

  • I absolutely use a traditional camera. I also however use my iphone…. but most recently, I have been using my FujiFilm cameras… I use them for pro work. A lot of the images are in Ford and Elite model portfolios. Lightweight and awesome color rendering. I rarely bring out my Nikon or Canon anymore. Your images would be absolutely amazing.

  • bavarian_blue February, 6 2015, 1:38 / Reply

I tried sony xperia x3. The camera does a pretty good job. But althougt i hate to carry equipment with weight and volume I prefer my canon EOS, because I don’t like using the display. for taking a photo I have to look to a cameraviewfinder. Sick. isn’t it?

  • I used to carry my camera around everywhere because I was constantly afraid of missing a good picture (better safe than sorry) but as I am in Uni and also carrying my laptop with me most of the time I felt that my bag size was constantly growing and I didn’t want to end up walking around with sports bag (before someone actually made it cool hahahahaa) so when I got my new iPhone I realised how good the quality actually is (except the zoom which is pretty terrible) so now for everyday purposes I just take my phone and charger (because you know that batter can’t handle my photography/instagram addiction)

  • Great photo! But not so much the coat. Cruelty is never chic.

  • The face is too grainy and the background is sharp – all a bit flattened, and not quite as great as the photos you take with your real camera, but still nice!

  • I love her look!

Nope, I do don’t carry or use a camera anymore. I have an iphone and I’m more than pleased with the quality of its pictures. I couldn’t tell that the picture on this post was from a phone–it looks great, as usual. I work in the fashion industry and I use my phone for pictures almost everyday. No complaints here.

  • I see what you mean, but pictures taken with phones are never as good as the ones taken with good cameras. You are gifted and a professional – and your friend beautiful – so the picture is fine. But quality is poor, the back is all flat and the light not so good. That’s why I think phones will never replace a good camera, we can’t have everything extraordinary in just one device.

  • Great phone shot and love her layered look!

I totally agree Garance! I even took my brother’s wedding photos with my IPhone 5 and Hypstamatic app! Nice!

  • It’s rather terrifying how Apple manages to brainwash people every single time a new product comes out. For years they’ve managed to convince people that they need the newest version of their product… Consumption, consumption, consumption….instead focusing on more important issues…

  • iPhone is great in a pinch but if you’re a photographer…. you’ve got to stick with the real gear to continue to shine above the masses.

  • Clotilde February, 8 2015, 2:40 / Reply

  • Such a pretty outfit. Warm and chic at the same time. Wish I could look that put together when I step outside. I shoot with a Nikon but lately all my photo’s are taken on my iPhone, simply because it is lighter, always with me and the Nikon is a pain to travel with as it is so big and takes up a lot of room. X

  • Hahaha I’m using film! A Canon AE1. Makes me take less pictures, but try and optimize every shot. And I develop myself in b&w, I don’t know. This is great though, it’s the idea behind the picture what matters the most.

  • First off, top marks for getting the “Photography is not a crime” sticker in.

I still use “traditional” cameras* Range from a 7X17″ panoramic, through 5×4″(ancient field & homemade pinhole), Lomo, Fuji XE1(that’s the workhorse) a couple of vintage toys and my iPhone.

I don’t though use a 5D any more, I ditched it for the Fuji. Clients don’t notice the difference; but my enjoyment of photography and my back do.

*please define “traditional”. I’m pretty sure the camera in my iPhone comes close to a modern equivalent of the Kodak Brownie.

  • J’aime trop le “photography is not a crime”, il tombe à point nommé.

    http://cheyma.com

  • I say go back to film cameras! But I am constantly taking photos with my iPhone, it’s too easy.

  • While the pics from my Nikon are certainly better my Samsung will take a pretty decent shot if the lighting is good, not to mention all the amazing photo apps that are around to fix up my images.

  • J’aime beaucoup le “Photgraphy is not a crime” en arrière plan

  • Have you tried/looked at the micro 4/3 systems? They are somewhat similar to DSLRs, but are mirror-less, so are a lot tinier. We have an Olympus variety – OMD, I think is the model?

  • I definitely prefer a traditional camera to a smartphone camera. I don’t care what anyone says about their iPhone camera, it’ll never give you the control and quality of a camera. I use a Canon S100. It’s point-and-shoot sized but with more manual controls. Photo quality definitely waaaaaaaay better than any phone!

  • Jane with the noisy terrier February, 17 2015, 12:10 / Reply

I love taking photos, especially when I travel. And so last year I carried my not-so-heavy Nikon to Israel, Turkey, France and Italy…and ended up taking most of my photos with my iPhone 4S (I’ve now upgraded to the 6.) My model friend Roger introduced me to the Clarify option on the Camera+ app and wowza, my iPhone photos look better than almost anything I’ve taken with a traditional camera.
