They say style is in the details… Well – one of the things I do the most, without even thinking about it, is rolling up my sleeves. I even roll up the sleeves of my coats ! At this point, it’s more a weird habit than any kind of style science – and that why I thought it was time to explore the cuff, but like – seriously.

I asked Brie to give me a few pointers…

Here’s what I’ve observed from Chinatown to Fashion Week…

There are just a few simple steps to three very chic (and sometimes old-fashioned) rolled sleeves. This is an art form we’re taking about here!

The Pro Roll
– flip back the cuff once
– pull the cuff up past your elbow
– bring folded sleeve up and over cuff
– pushup to your liking!

Simple Flip
– unbutton jacket sleeve buttons, turn back once
– scrunch up to elbow
– flip cuff over once
You’re done!

High and Tight
– pinch excess sleeve fabric, fold left like a pleat
– fold back cuff several times to secure
– wear high at bicep
– note: best with 3/4 or short sleeve shirts

I’m with you on this one! Buttoned cuffs just seem so restraining ( plus I have longish arms so they hit awkwardly) that I immediately roll back my cuffs a couple times–mid-forearm is good. I think it’s the reason I prefer jackets with bracelet sleeves.

  • I also rolling up the sleeves without thinking about it and then I realize how much I love this detail! Awesome pictures, I love the denim combo and the great tips!

  • Yes, I like to wear the sleeves rolled up!!!!

  • Now that you mentioned it, I can say it happens to me too. It’s a reflex.

  • Love this, I never met a rolled up sleeve that I didn’t like. :) I admit that I’m not skilled in one or two of these techniques, I’ll have to experiment this week.

Check out my new post on the Dior and I documentary that was screened at the Tribeca Film Festival last week. Would love to hear thoughts!

  • I love rolling up my sleeves…and I even don’t know why. I suppose it kind of makes it for more relaxed outfit, you know. When everything is too polished…this details just adds a bit of ‘i don’t care’ or ‘effortless’ kind of feeling.

  • Am quite the rolled sleeve gal myself. Love this little tutorial. It’s all in the details!

  • I always roll up my sleeves, even when I’m wearing a blazer over my shirt. I will find a way to roll them out. Arm parties, DUH!
I remember J. Crew had their own specific guide to rolling up sleeves, but the “pull up my sleeves” look is easier and better off for me.

  • Such a great post, very helpful. And the images are gorgeous. It would be great to have more style how-to’s. :)

  • Love this! I’m also a serial sleeeve-roller – it’s the only way I feel comfy in shirts…

  • Love this guide, it’s so helpful. Just wondering what brand the jeans are in the photos? It’s so hard to find nice denim in a higher rise, and these look perfect. Thank you!

  • Hi Kitty! They’re by Mih Jeans

  • I always roll my sleeves even my knits. Could be just an illusion, but I think as well as comfort it narrows the hips.

  • I’m a serial roller and I know it. Nice tips! Also kudos for working the double denim to a tee (pun unintended!).

  • Thank you Garance and Brie. This is awesome!

  • My husband does this so much that I now also do it to my son who is 2 years old! I can’t help it, its standard behavior.

  • I love rolling up my sleeves too! Especially with knits. However sometimes the knit is too loose to stay up which can be irritating. To get around this I bought some elastic bands and tied them so they fit perfectly just above my elbow without being too tight (very important…don’t want to cut off circulation!). If you just roll the sweater around the band a couple of times you can then just pull it up to your elbow. Works like a charm.

Thanks for your always insightful and entertaining articles!

Loooove the Rock-a-billy meets “Rosie the riveter” look with the flexed biceps! Great photo!

I really needed this post, thank you! After a misfire with layering a shirt under a top today, it would be great if you did a how-to post on layering, a la the pic of Christine Centenera (I think the relative lengths of the shirt and top is a key success factor, by the way).

  • In the 80s everyone began rolling up their sleeves. Everything comes around again.

  • I can’t put my finger on why exactly, but there is something very sexy about a rolled up shirt sleeve. Maybe it’s that photo of David Bowie by Helmut Newton (in Monaco) that was the initial turn-on. I’ve dedicated a pinterest board to white shirts that features him and others who enjoy rolled styles.

  • Funny thing: I’m sitting at work, it’s crazy hot (like middle-of-July hot), the sun is hitting my window as I’m retouching some pictures, my shoes off, my sleeves rolled. I take a short break to read my favourite blogs and I come here and just as I see the headline I stop to fix my sleeves so that they look more tidy. Now I can read the article without the guilt pang.

Gorgeous outfits, and yes they profit from the rolling of sleeves. I love the look. Its so very useful looking. But sadly I can’t seem to make anything stay up. Perhaps I’ll read this carefully and practice.

Please make a video for this ! Love from Australia
