Luisa & Tine / Rome

13 years ago by

The rain never did end up stopping in Rome (no seriously, you see all the drops in the photo?), and I could’ve cared less because I had a most wonderful day with Luisa & Tine who are both so fantastic as they responded to all my extreme traveler questions coming from someone who has never bought a city guide in her life and always ends up at the Zara just down the street instead of visiting any museums (shame) and who isn’t at all afraid of using intro sentences that are entirely too long (shame number 2).

Luckily, this time, I came across the two best guides you could ask for and we spent the day laughing and zipping in between raindrops eating mouthfuls of Nutella (shame number 3).

So, here’s the guide to Rome from the coolest girls on the block. Yep, couldn’t be simpler. You’ll notice I snuck in some of the questions you gave me last time, as I’m just like Tine & Luisa : I like traveling with a team. So thanks to all of you!

Where to get coffee…

Piazza Sant’Eustachio is the best café in Rome, and the cappuccino is suuuuper creamy.

Where to go for a snack…

To the Bar Del Fico (NFTG : I think that fico means cute. Isn’t that cute?)

Where to get in some people watching…

At the bar Della Pace in the morning. It’s the most authentic, old Romans, you get the picture. But there’s also Calisto à Trastevere where you get the most delicious gelato for 1€. We love to watch everyone there. It’s a mix of chic tourists and old Romans, so anti Lonely Planet! Ha! (See! Right there! This is why I never buy city guides, ah!)

Something you HAVE to eat in Rome… And where?

The suppli! (A stuffed rice ball) and artichokes à la Romana (you’ll love them) (NFTG : I’m so crazy about artichokes, and I know you couldn’t care less, but I just needed to say it…), wich are good in the roman ghetto at the restaurant Da Giggetto.

Oh yeah!! There’s the granitta di caffee con panna! (coffee with whipped cream!) (NFTG : What’s this? I want I want!!!) The best is at the Pantheon in La Tazza D’Oro.

Also, no buts, you have to get the pizza al taglio del forno from Camp Dei Fiori.

A good restaurant for lunch with friends…

For light lunch with friends, Da Gina on the Piazza Di Spagna : the make great salads and the ambiance is totally girly.

For dinner, l’Osteria Chiana without a shadow of a doubt… You’ll end dinner dancing and singing with the owners who are two of the most beautiful young roman men.

The best pastry shop…

The 5 Lune : a tiny little bakery, so delicious. Get the raspberry cream cake. And the nutella tarts!!!!! (NFTG: So I think you’re getting that I have a bit of a history with the nutella tarts, a roman speciality that the girls made me taste that I dream about all night long… and during the day too).

Your favorite multi-brand shop?

There’s Degli Effetti (They’ve got a great selection of great designers), Butella, and Aynulindale, there, or where you got that picture of your Porselli! Oh and don’t forget Delfina Delettrez, whose jewelry is super beautiful !

Where to buy stuff on the cheap…

The vintage shops near Via Del Governo Vecchio, especially Omero e Cecilia. That’s where you got your good butt pants! (NFTG : Aaaaah, you wanna see?) In general, Omero and his wife Cecilia, and we usually end up talking for hours with them, and sometimes even finish totally getting drunk with some wine Omero bought from his friend net door! (NFTG : The vintage shop of our dreams, right?) We love them, they’ve got this wonderfully paternal side with us…

Oh, and there’s also the Piazza Augusto Imperatore market, every 2 weekends out of 4. (NFTG : Wait so every other weekend? Wasn’t quite sure.)

A hair salon?

Our stylist is Ony, via Delle Coppelle. He’s amazing because he can really get what you want without cutting 8 inches off if you asked him for just a trim! :-)

Your spa?

There’s an amazing new spa, they’re thai, in the Barberini quarter. Good for friends and lovers alike! You can ask to have the spa all to yourself!!!!!

Your guilty pleasure destination?

Oh man we end up there so often, wayyyy more often than you’d think!!!! We pass tons of time in the shadiest bar right down the street from us, don’t remember the name, it might not even have one, but sometimes we feel like we really look like shit and don’t exactly want the world to know!!!

The perfect day in Rome… And you can say anything, even sleeping!

Dream all morning and speak to no one :-). Go have breakfast at Calisto, watch the people go by… Get a second cappuccino (The second capoccino is mandatory if you want to really make a good people watch), go back to the house and change because in the morning you left wearing just whatever, draw/create, head out again to go get lunch with some friends at Da Gina, by then you’re more open and more awake and can talk more!

Then head out shopping together, have a cup of tea and get back to the house to try on your new stuff.

Then take a shower, put on some music, get yourself ready to head out to a gallery opening (there’s always something in Rome). And then head out to eat with friends (NFTG : these girls spend their entire lives in restaurants!!!!), but this time, invite the boys along too! (because you feel more beautiful at night) at l’Osteria Chiana. Then take in an awesome concert at Circolo Degli Artisti and finish up by partying it up until sunrise!!!

How to get around… Bike? Car? Metro?

MOTORINO!!!!!!!!! (vespa)

——————

Ah, and to close, a photo of Luisa, that I couldn’t get with Tine on the top picture because she was too busy smooching her dog Hiro. Okay… Yeah… I understand!

Okay, I send big hugs to all! It’s way too early and I gotta head out… I have a rendezvous with Istanbul!!!

    Shame n°1 : Yep, that’s bad.
Shame n°2 : Ehhh … not so bad.
    Shame n°3 : C’est Nutella madame ! Pas shameful ! Très bon !

    Hiro is cute, too.

Bonne journée Garance ! Bisous !

ça me fait rêver. Merci!

    kisses

  • ok thats it i am going to animal welfare to track down a dog to hug!!

  • Bonjour Garance!

  • Hiro is my hero! Great post. Thanks xox

  • I love Rome! I dream of living there!

  • Fico means Fig and in slang could be Hot or cool!
    :)

  • seriously are you going to Instanbul???
I was hoping to ‘meet you’ in Paris as I’ll be there on Monday for a week!
    ..next time for sure ;-)

enjoy the Italian bella vita, e Roma che é bellissima!

  • Garance, If you are in Istambul, you have to go and eat at The House Cafe in Ortakoy, it has a fantastic view of a beautiful Mosque and The Bosphorous. Istambul has a fantastic energy, the mix of eastern and european culture is incredibly seductive.

Sofa, a shop outside the entrance at The Grand Bazaar also has some wonderful vintage gold jewellery that I´m still dreaming about from my last trip there.

  • Hi! I’m from Rome.
Fico means “cute” in roman dialect but the name of the bar (and of the square) comes from the name of the big fig tree that is (or was) in front of the bar in the middle of the square.

    bacibaci

    Bisous !

  • Can’t wait to see what you share from Istanbul…can only imagine how lovely your photos will be!! xxx

  • Love your work and love you’re so in the top, having always a bird-eye on everything. Sometimes I only wonder if you have any outrageous taste, something that could take your blog away from the ELLE format. All what you seem to love, your girls, the places, the brands, are always so “put together” that I feel there is something missing or it’s maybe a matter of time. It’s so easy to like Chanel, Chloé. It’s so easy to like design hotels. It’s too easy to like slender, angelic, model-like girls. Try black people, try dirty, try messy, try old, try young, try real street fashion. I find no difference between girls you photograph in Italy, France, New York, Buenos Aires, Melbourne, Rio. Are all stylist girls like Daria Werbowy or Erin Wasson? The Sartorialist is a great master on that because he’s not trying to find only what he already likes, he seems to wonder around the world letting beauty express freely, sometimes in very awkward ways. Anyway, I know each person has her ow ways but I wanted to ask this to you for a while. Thank you so much for sharing for discoveries.

  • génial ce billet ! et géniale ta vie ! Istanbul maintenant ?? wow Garance tu nous fais rêver ! bises !

  • Garance! I love the dark grey jumper the girl on the first picture is wearing, do you now what brand is it?
    xxx, Cinta

ça me fait super plaisir.

    Bon voyage :)

  • Wow, this is amazing! I have been in Rome but only for one day (shame number 4), but next time I will definitely try all these tips and take the time to really get to know the city. And how gorgeous are those pictures?? And wait, you are going to Instanbul? Just how lucky are you??
    Take care!

    http://lhabitue.blogspot.com/

  • Merci Garance!

    Bon voyage! Baci
    Alex

  • Loving the photo Garance.. I can see the sunset coming down and reflecting her skin..
    J’adore you..
    LOx

    Besos porteños

    =^.^=

  • Hey Garance, fabulous guide/ advice on Rome – have you done the same ever for Paris? I go every year and stay next to Luxembourg Gardens, love Bar Du Marche etc. but want to know where you love?!

  • Bar del Fico is so called because it’s located in Piazza del fico; and “fico” is the name of a fruit (fig).
Good choice going to take a coffee in Sant’Eustachio!! It’s the best in Rome…
And I love Gina for her cheesecake!!!

    Cecilia

Merci!

  • Post it : Penser à visitier Rome !

    Alice.

Je me remets à mes créations :http://birdysdream.blogspot.com

  • yes yes yes. i love that they included ‘draw/create’ in their perfect day.

    love them.

  • OMG Garance ! Tu fais le tour du monde !
    A quand le Maroc ??

  • I would love to visit Rome, but never did it so far. If I will, I’ll defenitely use your tips, thnx!

SEXY ???

  • great photo Garance…and great post…rome is magic

    Total respect.

  • the market is held twice a month first and third sunday.
haha..fico means super cute but also fig (the fruit)
    granita..mmm…chipped ice with caffè!!! delicious!!!!
may I suggest Grom??it’s a gelateria that makes the most heavenly traditional ice cream (no additives, conservatives and that kind of stuff..just tha way my “nonna” used to make it when I was small)
and you must visit Mincio square, (Coppedè area). A little corner of very eccentric architecture that deserves a visit!!!
    love your blog!!!
    baci
    vanessa

des chaussures bout fleuri, cuir, cognac, made in italy, semelle COUSUE pour 49€

  • Oh, Garance! You know why i love your blog so mush?….not because of the beautiful photography, but because you make fashion more humane!!! you look at the fashion editorials and blame yourself for every extra calorie you’ve ate! but you make it so natural…..you write about Nutella craving and accept existence of fat on the ass and looking badly in the morning!!! this way, you make yourself closer to your readers!

  • I LOVE Piazza Sant’Eustachio cappuccini!!!! my friends and I would call it, il caffe testa cervo (the deer head caffe!).

LA TAZZA DE ORO! I would stop by there every morning before my Italian class for a little pick me up!

    Calisto à Trastevere…just mmm.

Rome is such a magical city, I wish I still lived there. Must leave NYC to make a trip back soon…La dolce vita!

  • Oh là là! really coming to ?stanbuul?
    Have a brilliant trip!

  • You should have seen London this week!

    have a great weekend

    http://bodieandfou.blogspot.com/2010/11/mood-board-for-white-something.html

  • I love your guides!! but…do you only have gorgeus friends?? they’re all soooo pretty!!!

    http://singinonmymind.blogspot.com

by the way, if you like electronic/ambient stuffs definitely check out genoese band port-royal. they are amazing, especially on the concerts and usually have really great gigs in rome especially.

  • i’m actually copy pasting this onto my computer every time you publish a new one xx

    Thanks!

  • I’m not usually one for animal-themed photos, but wow, that photo of Luisa & Hiro is really something… you really captured something in that pup!

  • garance!!!

  • I CANT BELIEVE YOU’RE GOING TO ISTANBUL!
I’m from Istanbul and you’re going there when I’m not there- when it’s been one of my dreams to meet you for almost 3 years now. Cmon, how unfair is that?
Anyways, I wish you a very magical time there. I dont know what the plan is, but I hope you end up seeing more of the amazing underground art culture then the usual touristic stuff.
    Aaaaarghhh!! :)

Si tu en as l’occasion, fonces-y !!
    Bacio.

  • You got the point, my friends…you draw a perfect portrait of the eternal city! So many tips for the “made in Italy” lovers…good luck for everything, you both deserve a great success…and see you soon in the most beautiful city worldwide…as usual I will be the one with the white vespa….

  • Great guide! I can’t wait to use it since I’m going to Rome this weekend! Thanks Garance.

  • Aaaah Garance I can’t believe you have Piazza Sant’Eustachio as the best coffee!! Four years ago we went on a family holiday to Rome and a friend took us there for coffee saying “ask any Roman and they will tell you this is the best coffee in Rome”! It turned me into a coffee lover completely! And now there have literally been 6 or 7 times when I have been talking to Romans and mentioned Piazza Sant’Eustachio and they have said it’s definitely the best coffee in Rome! I love that it is unanimously decided amongst all the locals! PS I love your blog, you have to come to Scotland!

  • Just indulged ourselves with cakes from 5 Lune. Yum, yum. yum!

  • Bonjour,

Bises, Jeanne (Paris)
