I love plaid shirts, on women and on men.
I like them in a nice thick flannel so I can wear them all winter long instead of sweaters. They keep heat well and look so good with white skinny jeans.
They’re such a classic.
And even though they’ve become the go-to uniform for Brooklyn hipsters these past few years, not to mention Terry Richardson, I don’t care. I love them and that’s that.

These here are from Uniqlo, who have stepped up to the challenge of coming out with 150 different kinds of plaid this year. It’s made Scott and I a little loco because they’re oh so cool and so not expensive.

J’adore les chemises a carreaux, ca doit etre un de mes trucs préférés dans la vie. Deja c’est tres flatteur comme imprimé, et puis c’est juste trop cool. Ma favorite vient egalement de Uniqlo, niveau qualité prix ils sont imbattables, et la texture et la coupe sont parfaites.

I used to wear them, but I find myself a bit iffy now – wouldn’t the thick fabric bulk the figure? Might have to give it some thought.

J’ai decouvert la chemise a carreaux lorsque je vivais a Denver, c’etait un “must.” Tres cool a porter pour le look et tres warm pour le confort. Et plus elles vieillissent, plus elles sont confortables.

Literally 150?! That’s insane! I love fuzzy warm plaid flannels too, but I always assumed that was because I’m a product of the grunge era. Still, I will never get over them. Curious about the Uniqlo shirts now, I haven’t tried them before but am now totally intrigued!

Ahh, the perfect thing to wear today for our Thanksgiving meal. And I have just the one: “borrowed” from my son’s closet. This is the first time in 26 years he won’t be with us (he’s in the Peace Corps) and wearing his flannel shirt will allow me to have a little bit of him with me all day long.

Je viens de m’en acheter deux dans une friperie (une jolie friperie, où les vêtements sont lavés, bien rangés, etc… sinon, je ne peux pas !) et je n’arrête pas de les porter !
Nouée sur une jupe en cuir ocre, sous une boy-friend veste, juste un bout de col qui sort du pull… pour quelqu’un traumatisée par les imprimés comme moi (j’en porte peu, quasi que de l’uni dans ma garde-robe) j’aime bien le petit côté fantaisie que ça apporte, en étant toujours réussi…
En fait, la chemise à carreaux remplit un peu la même fonction que la marinière il y a quelques années, non ?
PS. L’avantage de la chemise à carreaux de friperie, outre son prix ridicule (20€ pièce, ah ah ah !) c’est la qualité : les miennes sont démentes, avec un col semi-rigide qui peut tenir droit, demi-droit, ou bien pointu, au choix… Et c’est chaud !

I agree…Classics. They can go from hipster to chic by adding a Barbour vest and some Wellies! Barbour even sells them for women. I love the country shooting party look! Ha… an idea for my next a post!

Plaid shirts are my staple because they make my super chic items (floor length ball skirts,etc) very casual. So funny that your boyfriend “goes crazy” over something like a plaid shirt. Also a little worrying maybe haha :)

I got Uniqlo plaid shirts last year, they’re great and that store is great!
Ah oui, les Uniqlo sont les meilleures : j en ai deux, inusables.
Mais j ai aussi quelques H&M beaucoup plus cheap ( plus fines, moins de tenue) mais qui donnent bien le change aussi.
C est un basique quoi.

ce que je préfère avec les chemises à carreaux, c’est qu’elles sont transgénérationnelles. De mon garçon de 10 ans à mes filles ados, de mon mari à moi. C’est un peu comme le jeans

Was at the Army / Navy surplus store yesterday, saw beautiful and inexpensive plaid shirts and couldn’t think of what to wear them with. White skinnies as you suggested is perfect.
Il y a aussi H&M cette saison, qui nous fait de jolies chemises à carreaux chez LOGG ;-) Toutes douces pour l’hiver qui approche. Garance, comment fais-tu pour tout rendre (ou presque) facile à porter? Toujours la touche magique qui arrange une tenue :-) Becs !
“Plaid-Mania” is in full bloom and I couldn’t be happier about that! These shirts make me think about racing downhill on my Skis and enjoying a Fondue…. which is a good thing, love them! xxx

I love plaid shirts!!! I bought one in September (Tommy Hilfiger Denim) and have worn like it’s the only item of clothing i own. I love the fact they are so comfy and like my PJ’s. The fit is everything though, otherwise you can end up looking like a lumberjack!

I loooooooooooooooooooooove plaid shirts! They are definitely a fav of mine. My guy is skinny and a little bit taller than me so I borrow his shirts all the time! And I have a few of these of my own. I try to wear them with something super feminine, like a skirt or a pair of skinny jeans and ballerina flats so I won’t look too masculine (I have a brother who could almost pass as my twin so I try not to look so boyish, otherwise I look at myself in the mirror and I see him).

Please say you are all joking about plaid shirts???? Wrong on so many levels. Maybe I have been scarred by living in Australia, here they are mostly worn with ugg boots and tracksuit pants by people who long ago gave up the will to look good. Sorry – they may be comfortable and practical but they are also deeply unattractive. (to me anyway)
I knew it! The first time I saw the picture, I thought, they must be UNIQLO! I love that brand. Others say they are just basics, and yes they are, but they are basics that are made so well. I love their jeans. Gotta go check out their store later and see these plaids, saw them last month when I visited the store but I was eyeing something else. :)

C’est le genre de chemise que je portais ado, à l’époque NIRVANA, bien sur je les portais 10 fois trop grande. C’était la mode du grunge et ces chemises pour ça était parfaites!

Garance, I am so happy you posted about plaid shirts. On my last shopping day (last Saturday) I bought one from Uniqlo as well. My guy friends say it’s a lesbian shirt but I don’t care, because like you I believe they are a classic and you can make different combinations with them. I think i am gonna try it with a skirt this winter.

I think 3 is the limit on plaid flannel shirts, with a Scotch tartan as the staple. I found a tailored blue/grey one by Victronix, recently.

As-tu fais exprès de faire un léger flou artistique sur celles de Scott.Je plaisante, mon mari revient de New York et nous avons trouvé dans la valise une chemise rouge et bleue de chez Hollister style pour le moins farmer mais très agréable au toucher.On va surement la partager avec mes filles qui la fashioniseront mieux que moi sans doute.

Elles sont trop bien !! Et c’est vrai qu’elles ne sont pas chères, c’est exactement le produit que je cherchai ! Chez Volcom et autres surf shops elles sont deux fois plus chères et pas plus jolies. Mais petit problème : Uniqlo ne fais pas de vente par correspondance.. Je suis pour une fois, bien frustrée de pas être sur Paris !
