thakoon-white-dress

11 years ago by

For this summer, I am craving this type of shirt dress: white, short, fresh, light, cool.

I did a lot of research (the one in the picture is Thakoon) and tried a lot of them (I tried on an Alaïa at Colette that’s still imprinted on my retina)(as well as the price tag) but each time something was just off…

I found out that the problem is that actually, a white dress can easily look pretty bland and way too waspy (Can you say that? What would be the equivalent in French, BCBG? Bon chic bon genre?)…

Like, with ballet flats it’s freaky, way too proper, not cool at all, -12 on the Altimeter of Fashion.
With sneakers it’s not bad but it casualizes (let’s say that’s a word) the dress too much.
With high heels, well you kinda have to want to go around in heels in summer. I don’t.
With Birks, I don’t think I am ready.
With Birks AND socks, why not? But would I stand the weird looks? (Oh, do you want to talk about the subtle difference between Birks with or without socks or are you just extra tired of hearing about those shoes?)

With mmmm…
With combat boots, like in the picture?
Naaaaaaa, I love it. But it’s not for me.

Gladiators? Espadrilles? Flip flops?

What would you wear?

  • #TeamEspadrilles !!

    Birk… with socks? Please don’t… :-)

  • i don’t know if i like the outfit, but i do love the dress. and this is coming from someone who never wears white :)

    http://littleaesthete.com

  • I wear them with brown wedges or strappy gold flat sandals.

    xo
    http://pinksole.com

  • Perfect with t-strap sandals

  • Gladiators definitely a possibility, casual leather ones, no metal or bling. A statement belt or necklace…maybe some even more conspicuous combat boots. I love the simplicity of a clean-cut white dress, and the very impracticality of a white dress (so easily destroyed) is part of its charm. A hat, maybe. Very possibly a hat.

  • What does that mean? Why would a white drew get destroyed? I suppose it can get dirty…but so could a yellow, pink, beige, or chartreuse dress….is that what that meant? Dirt? or are white dresses more thin?

Hi Garance! I actually think that it could look cool with ballet flats! Some special ones – not classic plain ones – ie some pointy flats!

  • Francesca May, 15 2013, 9:19 / Reply

Plain and simple: gold or silver sandals.

  • I really like this dress style too, I need one like this for this summer!!

    DIY ON MY BLOG

    http://www.thestelstyle.com

  • You can wear it with your Chanel espadrilles ;-)
It depends on the style of the dress, my lace summer dress I wear with sandals (flat or wedge) and the office dress I wear with heels (peep toes or sandals)

  • Flip flops for the beach. Strappy flats for any other time.

  • I would wear it with walkable low wedge sandals, like these

  • Clara B May, 15 2013, 9:33 / Reply

  • Anette May, 15 2013, 9:37 / Reply

Sneakers! Definitely! But not those big, heavy, awful ones. Nice, leather sneakers, like these: http://www.candicecooper.de/#22/details

    Bisous !

  • Sandrine May, 16 2013, 6:25

  • Sandrine May, 16 2013, 6:30

    Ah oui oui oui !

  • Wow, that’s a really pretty dress! I would pair them with MM6 Wedges (http://eboutique.maisonmartinmargiela.com/nl/sandals_cod44526058jo.html) or with those in black, I can’t find them online but they sell them in a store next to my office and every morning I walk by and I feel the urge to just hop in and buy them (fortunately the store is still closed when I walk by in the morning, so this means I won’t splurge anytime soon!)

  • Soizic May, 15 2013, 9:51 / Reply

Avec des boots Weston! Tout simplement!

  • Love that look. I live in Southern California and will add combat boots to my white cotton dresses in late summer early fall with a denim jacket. I love the contrast between white and tough girl. During the heat of the summer, I wear the California staple…flip flops. I would also wear a Golden Goose distressed trainer/basket. Super Chic.
    Cassie http://www.itsmecassie.com/

  • Edgy sandals or your new Chanel espadrilles for sure. Some killer lipstick or accessories can also help in making it less clean-cut, like the girl’s Wang studded bag in the photograph!

  • I love to wear (white) dresses with loafers, preferably with a leopard print. Ladylike with a pinch of edgy.

  • DomiRandez de Montréal May, 15 2013, 10:02 / Reply

  • My favourite way of rocking a white dress is paired with tan leather sandals.
With simple strappy tan leather sandals you will have a minimalistic look and with gladiator-ish tan sandals you will have a more bohemian look. The vibe depends on the type of tan leather sandals that you choose, but you should choose tan leather sandals!

    :)

    Spot on!

  • Agreed

  • mmarie May, 15 2013, 10:09 / Reply

  • Charlotte May, 15 2013, 10:10 / Reply

I guess it depends on the type of sneaker: Converse or Bensimon, yes!

  • I love a white dress in the summer and mostly wear them with suede ankle boots in neutral tones (a little less harsh than black leather IMO). I see a lot of girls in new york in these Marant ones: http://www.lagarconne.com/store/item.htm?itemid=18594&sid=1235&pid=1233 but I personally prefer and wear this similar pair from Acne: http://www.lagarconne.com/store/item.htm?itemid=19120&sid=294&pid=121
Or sandals… agree with Annemerel on MM6 wedges – these are great: http://www.lagarconne.com/store/item.htm?itemid=19642&sid=691&pid=119
I’m lazy and prefer flats, so I recently got these and they are super soft and comfortable, great for the price: http://www.net-a-porter.com/product/336909
Let us know what white dress you end up settling on! Somehow I imagine you in a crisp shirtdress style like this http://www.shopbop.com/shirt-dress-plackets-ellery/vp/v=1/1521322112.htm?folderID=2534374302063518&fm=other-shopbysize-viewall&colorId=29105 or this http://www.shopbop.com/double-layered-shirtdress-back-cutouts/vp/v=1/1547384492.htm?folderID=2534374302063518&fm=other-shopbysize-viewall&colorId=12908 or even this http://www.farfetch.com/shopping/women/31-phillip-lim-sleeveless-flirt-dress-item-10408372.aspx (I think they made a pure white version too)

  • Virginie May, 15 2013, 10:20 / Reply

    * ne soit pas transparente
    * tombe bien
    * ne fasse pas gamine ou bourge ou coincée
    * ne soit pas trop courte
    * ni trop longue !

    alooooorrs ?

Flat strappy sandals!! Either tan, or gold, or black, or multicolored!!

Also, Reiss has these beautiful flat shoes (the shoes model is Honoree)… See how the blogger and stylist Gala Gonzalez rocks them with a baby doll dress:

    http://www.reiss.com/eu/explore/fashion-features/spirit-of-summer/

and Massimo Dutti has some shoes following the same “concept” I think:

    http://www.massimodutti.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product/dutties/es/massimodutti/609001/1904998/BAILARINA%2BCADENA

I think they should look good with an oversize short dress.

  • You can always wear a White Dress… sitting down somewhere – especially outside – is difficult :-)

  • I’d wear it with flat, slouchy “peter pan” boots, maybe in suede…..and if I felt particularly reckless, I’d make them toeless. hee hee

  • I echo wearing with brown wedge sandals, or gold strappy flat sandals (classic thong, or gladiators work, too). I have a simple, white jersey dress bought years ago, and I still cannot wear it without receiving at least one compliment. And those are my go-to shoes of choice with said dress. :)

I got me a white Isabel Marant Étoile Dress this season and had the same problem Garance. But for me Espadrilles are perfectly working with the white dress (I have the Chanel ones as well but in a different color). Sneakers do work as well as long as they are not too sporty. So at last it would say your new black Chanel Espadrilles will PERFECTLY fit with a white dress. It’s so you and please don’t do the Birks/socks thing :).
    Love

  • biker boots ! that would break the look bcbg , and what about those Chanel espadrilles they would be perfect with a little white dress !

  • I’m all about a printed or colored sandal. I have a black/white chevron print sandal and I can imagine how fab it would look with this dress. Or maybe a brown gladiator sandal, channeling a little inner Michael Kors feel.

  • I have this white linen James Perse dress that looks really cool with my Alexander Wang Anouck boots. These boots have just the right amount of cool to tone down the dress without looking too casual. Probably any sort of mid-calf to low boot would work. Tan legs are probably a good idea, too.

And I have a question about something for a cold summer nigts, whitch goes with white dress eg like this. Sweater in white? Or…?

  • I think natural leather looks great with white. A flat strappy sandal would be nice.

  • I like sandals or ballet flats but in really loud color so that it doesn’t seem too put together. If I wanted to keep it low key gold or tan sandals could work. Somehow all of my sandals except for one pair are black and gladiator style. I just think you have to keep the white dress from becoming to precious looking or waspy.

  • I think depending on the length of the dress I would wear gladiator sandals or wedges or the new white Saint Laurent sneakers :)

    http://www.timelessdifference.com

  • I wore my white dress with the Zara gold sneakers from seasons ago, you had the same if I am not mistaken and it looked great.

  • I agree with Tati. It depends on what look you are going for.. converse for casual sporty . flats for chillin, brogues for a masculine/ feminine mix ! I can’t embrace the birks with socs… its too ironic.

Aide moi stp Garance !!!

  • Gotta say I love the way you champion the Birks with socks thing. I’m with you all the way. Don’t care what others think. For me, it’s a groovy look…. And a certain white dress with the right socks and the right Birks… I think it could totally rock! Yeah!

Knee-high gladiator/ cage flat sandals in a metallic would also be adorable

  • Gladiators!!! Especially if it’s a shirt dress or loose fitting dress. The gladiator sandals will give you that edge, while still keeping it femenine. You can even try gold sandals if you are feeling a bit “Godess-y”. Now…..high gladiators or low gladiators…that’s up for you to decide!

  • Personally, I’d just go with simple strapy sandals. I think the key to making it work is your accessories. Your jewelry. Clutch/purse. Scarf. Maybe this just reveals that these are my favorite ways to really make an outfit stand out. I’d go for pops of color. A nice heavy turquoise necklace and coordinating earrings. Or a fun, colorful patterned scarf. Or a bright bag.

  • Gladiator sandals or the Chanel golden creepers (cool-factor +12)!

  • Whew — never got past the over $1,000 price tag for a cotton/poplin dress….must lie down….then will contemplate shoes…..

  • I would wear it with sandals or gladiators. I’m not crazy about white dressed because they get dirty very easily! But one thing is sure, dresses are for feminine shoes or maybe brogues, not Birkenstocks, not sneakers, not biker boots. That’s my humble opinion.

  • There are these cross between a ballet flat and a college shoe, with cat ears and face, they are super cute (I forgot who makes them) and they come in black, white and red. I think something like that might be nice on you Garance.

  • jennifer May, 15 2013, 3:23 / Reply

Cool pair of boots, like Isabel Marant Dicker boot or Rag and Bone.

    Bonne continuation !

    barefoot and on the beach!!!

  • I am definitely in agreement with those who say gold sandals. Casual without being too boring. I cannot wear a white dress, however. Inevitably I would spill coffee or spaghetti sauce all over myself.

  • I like white as edgy, with the black boots; but I have two more thoughts. 1) White can be charming -a pair of white Keds or white Cons (preferable worn in and slightly frayed); and 2) white can be ethereal- so a sandal that simulates “naked” as much as possible.

  • I love the idea of a crisp white summerdress, but I’d feel way to conscious in it I’m afraid. Because I think it should be wrinkle and stain free and I don’t think I could handle that idea, haha.
That aside, I think a white dress would go great with chestnut brown lace booties. I think with strappy sandals make it too cutesy. Some more feminine and sleak sneakers like Keds, as mentioned above, or low top Goliaths would look great as well I think.

  • Gabrielle May, 15 2013, 4:31 / Reply

I’d wear it with Fiorentini&Baker Elie Boots…. our spring/summer here in Switzerland seams to be seriously delayed, so warm feet are important! xxx

  • I’d make it casual with chucks or sneakers (oh my adidas la trainers, but the girly, narrow ones could be cool), but maybe it’s because I’m young :)

  • Funny you should post this. One of my clients is doing a photo shoot on Saturday and she and the other artist in the photo shoot are going with white (I opted to put my client in a tunic and capris whilst the other artist went with a dress). White can be difficult to do without looking a) frumpy, b) inappropriate (VPL? V-ALL-L!) , or c) cliche (I have a peasant dress and I wear it because my husband loves it..)

Other commenters are spot on – you should definitely wear gold footwear. White and gold together are angelic and over the top (in a good way) all rolled into one. And go with espadrilles with some nice thick ankle straps. It’s chick, comfortable, and easy and you don’t have to look like you’re trying too hard.

  • It depends on the style. I wear mine shortish tunic style one with bleached Indian leather sandal/thongs – the light beige ones – they have the hoop over the big toe and and a strap over the top of the foot and plaited leather joining the two but sometimes I cut off the plaited leather strap and just have the simple two horizontal straps. With perfectly pedicured feet with either black nail polish or deep deep dark colour and maybe a small gold toe ring (I know! – but I love them. they are kind of erotic).

  • I love how she’s worn her white shirt here! Would looooove to have her ‘pins’! I’d wear a white dress like that with my Chloe Susanna boots (black OR red, I like red with white!), or my Isabel Marant Bobby sneakers, or even my Nike Roshe’s…I like dressing a dress down :)

I have a white dress by 3.1 Phillip Lim. I love it! Usually worn with tan wedges or silver gladiator sandals (I think I look a bit brassy in gold). But as its headed into winter here I may just need to throw a denim jacket over the top with biker boots. Now, just have to find the perfect boots…
P.S. My feet are getting ‘old’ and have been seeing a podiatrist. She tells me that good casual shoes for my feet would be Birkenstocks. If you could use some of your style influence to make them über stylish I’d be super grateful! With socks – even better – it’s getting cooler here ;-) Ta!

  • Tattoos on the forearms are my personal favorite accessory to counteract any prissy or WASPy outfit aspects without changing shoes or anything else. Might be a bit drastic if you don’t already have and love them though…

  • Hiya Garance,
There are some Tabitha Simmons black patent flat studded points with t-bars, they have some in other styles too which are oh so cute! Or you could hope for a Zara pair to be released like me;-)

  • IsabelMarant LowTopSneaker i think. ahahahah~~

  • Jellies? Keds? Beat up old loafers?

  • i have a closet full of white dresses and from my own “research” they look best with sneaker wedges, or black ankle boots with a low or chunky heel; even better if they’re lucite. It looks sophisticated, but not played out like the combat boot, and not too “grecian” as you get with sandals.

  • Danielle May, 16 2013, 12:16 / Reply

Hmmm…thinking about it…I’d say black, crochet ankle lace flats. I know it seems super specific but I remember a pair that my cousin brought back from Paris and they would be ABSOLUTELY perfect with a white shirtdress!

  • Metallic flat sandals definitely! Pretty, feminine, edgy. =D

  • Hi Garance,
Since you’re a Parisien, you probably know about this brand but in case you don’t know it: COS.
It’s a sister of H&M and is has these type of dresses in the summer. Personally, I love the white cotton dresses. In Amsterdam it is either very hot or it rains with a chill, a cotton dress is the way to go. You don’t feel the heat and when it gets chilly (I don’t know if that’s even a legal word) you easily put on a cardigan. Let’s just say that in Amsterdam you will probably experience both types of weather in the same day; yeah. They also sell wonderfull shoes to match the dresses and the prices are very good. So there you have it, all in 1 store

I do it with either flat sandals (very low key, like some simple leather ones, not fulls of spikes or whatever like everything today) or some simple oxfords. Looks cool, not too dressy and you don’t run the risk of looking like you are going to get married (always my fear with white dresses :p) ;)

  • KristinK May, 16 2013, 11:34 / Reply

I’d wear them with flats- not ballet flats but with D’Orsay flats! Like the Jenni Kayne leather ones, to avoid being too freaky girly.

  • Church’s !

    Ballerine totalement d’accord off direct.

A lady-like, minimalist, suede or leather, pair of ankle boots.

  • Ai-Ch'ng May, 16 2013, 10:40

    What a lovely photo!

Although I’d never wear white dress, I’d do a similar thing – wear it a pair of low-heeled/flat, fitted, comfortable Beatle-style ankle-boots in battered olive suede, regardless of whether it is a broderie anglaise number or a white shirt dress. And my usual plethora of pendants on leather.

I do have a white, second-hand crochet knee-length second hand dress that’s just straight-up-and-down: very comfortable and losing its shape slightly with massive sleeves with all the wear it gets. I like it best over a cobalt silk slip, and with footwear of fitted, olive coloured Beatle suede boots and my over-sized ox-blood leather jacket from Chronicles of Never for when it is cooler. Comfortable all the way.

  • Ankle boots, preferably western-inspired and multi-colored. Boat shoes or gladiators should work too. And the more texture to the dress, the less “stuff” on everything else.

  • a simple brown leather chelsea boot with a white dress is my favorite pairing. or, a cute sneaker like a superga — casual but still kind of sassy, maybe?

  • Mireille May, 17 2013, 5:20 / Reply

  • I just purchased a fabulous, crisp white shirt dress from the Uniqlo flagship store in Ginza (the store is 12 floors!) and I recently paired it with my blue suede oxfords. It felt so fun and summery and very comfortable for miles of city exploring.

  • Flatforms!!!

  • I know what you mean, but something like a white dress has a mind of its own. It can choose to look good with a whole lot of things.

I have a pair of flat sandals, with a double criss-crossy strap around the ankle. They’re part gladiator, and part city girl. And the fact that they’ve got some studs on the straps, makes them more fun, and laid back.

    Hope this helps :)

I was drooling over a white Laurence Dolige dress last night on lexception.fr (love that site!) and I was also thinking about how the low palladium sneaker needs to make a resurgence..so with a white dress I would wear an off white or grey palladium…. chunky enough to have that combat boot vibe.. visually “light” enough to not throw the white dress off kilter.. and rugged enough to endure Paris schlepping.

Brouges? Casual, but not too casual. Or some cool old school sneakers, but not the canvas type. White would be most cool. Or A.P.C. leather sandals (no heel). Or Isabel Marant dickers. I think I would prefer sneakers, the other options seem a little bland, I recently brought these:
