Ah, I have so much fun with my mini photo studio*!

Recently, I realized that I had jumped on the burgundy** trend without even knowing it was a trend, so I told myself that I had to show you a few of the things I had accumulated…

Of course, there are some accessories that I’ve had for a longtime, like this bag that I love with all my heart. Lately though, it has mysteriously made its reappearance on my shoulder.

Then, little by little, without even being conscious of it, I bought some sneakers, a pair of jeans, make up, and a few tops, all burgundy in color (one of which you’ve seen far too many times for me to show it to you again), telling myself all along that I was a super original girl with my eye for subtle and refined ideas in color tone.

And then one day, I came across and editorial in a magazine called “Burgundy” and I came to terms with the fact that I had been totally brainwashed and didn’t even realize it.

I even wondered if this whole burgundy thing wasn’t really just a bordeaux, repackaged with a much more sophisticated name.

Pfffff.

The gods of fashion are dangerous.

Meh. Whatever. I love this color. It goes with everything. It’s sublime with grey (my favorite color for clothes***) and I wonder if I should buy a few more fabulous jeans from Topshop before the trend disappears.

Do you think you’ll still want it in two months?

Is Sandy going to take us all?****

Should I buy another pair of jeans?

————

*A white table in front of a window, professional isn’t it?

** Apparently, in English, it’s “burgundy” and in French, it’s “aubergine” (meaning eggplant). That info comes from a very credible source and by that I mean Grazia.

*** That said, what isn’t sublime with grey? Ha!

**** Today is kind of a vacation day in New York. Everyone is stuck at home waiting for Hurricane Sandy to pass. Yeah, some people are out clearing grocery store shelves while I’m sitting at home wondering if a need another pair of burgundy jeans.

Top, Marc Jacobs; Bag, Louis Vuitton Sofia Coppola SC; Sneakers, Adidas; Jeans, Topshop Baxter; Nail Polish, Essie Berry Naughty; T-Strap Sandal, Cole Haan.

  • Wow. I love that burgundy color. It is one of my best. Great.

  • Gorgeous! Especially that bag – just looks better with age.
I have loved burgundy forever – and it’s such a rich tone, I think it will outlive trends. This season, I plan to invest in a burgundy leather bag – haven’t decided on the one yet, but I have a few more weeks :)

  • I think we shouldn’t worry too much about blindly following trends. After all burgundy has always been a sublime autumn colour, and it is the magazines that have declared that it should be a “trend”. I’m increasingly distrustful of what are seen as ‘trends’, because somehow I feel like it robs me of what I truly, really like.

  • Monny Karen October, 29 2012, 9:15 / Reply

Believe me!

  • ah..those adidas! needs those asap. men’s or women’s? details pls!

I think there will be a lot of Sandy-inspired online shopping in the New York metro area in the next 36 hours! I love burgundy with camel, navy and unexpected brights like coral and deep turquoise. Yes, and maybe a pair of velvety plush cords in a wine-soaked hue as well?

  • Jane – I’ve never felt comfortable in cords – I don’t know why ! Are you stuck at home too ?

  • that is true – if we don’t lose power

  • Oh !

  • Ah, Garance, you are so adorable! I saw couple of articles about this trend back in August in Elle and couple of Vogues and I was constantly writing on my blog about this, yet my lovely mates were like ‘meh, we had bordeaux before’ . Guess what? We have prom this week and almost everyone bought a burgundy dress haha. I love this color for sure, so I think another pair of jeans is a fantastic idea!

    Have an amazing week! x

  • Lovely photo, and thanks for sharing-I have been oggling your burgundy :) top on your videos and was wandering where you got it from, ah Marc Jacobs, I wish I could afford his stuff! Anyway I have funny relationship with ”red wine” colour:): first I loved it as a teenager, then I stopped weaaing it as I though it made me look old, lol, and now I redisocover old stuff I have in my closet-a cashmere burgundy scarf (love it) and accidently one of my bags is kinda burgundy, well dark red anyway:)). Good luck with hurricane, I do hope it will not be that bad and you will be safe!!

  • It’s weird, I really thought I wouldn’t jump on the bandwagon with this trend, but now I’m totally into it – despite the fact that I’m usually into pastels and softer colours. But there’s something sophisticated about burgundy… Love it! xx

  • Whatever, trend or no trend. I have been noticing that it is a beautiful color on you with your coloring. I’d go for another pair of those jeans because it is always going to look pretty on you.

  • Literally, The color from fall, love it!
The Adidas are ” a need”!!!

  • I love Burgundy, as I agree it is such a great “neutral” that goes with everything. More than anything I love accessories in that color, feels a bit more classic, no? You can have it forever. And no, I don’t think Sandy is going to get us, but it will be a very rainy couple of days here. I just love the american hysteria always believing that Armageddon is going to happen ( thanks to all the news channels), therefore lets quickly buy all the food there is out there just in case!

    xxx

  • Très beau avec du vert sapin aussi! Sublimes baskets au passage.

  • Such a hot trend for a total look
    http://loulouclouclou.blogspot.com.es/

  • où as tu trouvé ces adidas “aubergine” trop belles??? me dis pas a New york !!

  • I love the sparkling top! I’m sooo into sparkling things this season. But it’s probably just another trend…

  • I think the Adidas sneakers are : adidas Originals Adistar Racer in either light maroon or burgundy, not sure. Really cute!

  • Jane Elizabeth October, 29 2012, 10:10 / Reply

Oddly enough, I just bought a little burgundy dress with a peplum yesterday! But I think the trend will last. Anything that can be considered some shade of red is always classy.

  • Yeah… I totally undestand you. I’m the most brainwashed person in the whole world. But on my defence I have to say that I do own a burgundy bag that I bought like five years ago and it’s my favourite bag in the world. And now that I think about it, that goes on your defense too because I took that bag with me to a Scott’s book signing in Madrid like three years ago and you told me you love it and asked me where I bought it (It’s from a store called Hakei).
So yeah, I can confirm that we both loved burgundy years ago. And I even have a photo of you touching my bag. Well it sounds a bit weird, but I was ashamed to actually pose next to you, so that’s everything I could get. Anywhooo… That’s graphic evidence of our burgundy love!

  • Burgundy is also one of my new obsessions! xx.

  • there are worse trends for certain,I’ll take the bageand hte nail polish. mmm, the nail polish is affordabke and I can have it today!

  • I loved it!!!!
I’m posting looks from L.A. and accessories:

    http://www.thegavlaks.com

  • actually burgandy came from “bourgogne” in french. I checked it from wikipedia.
sorry if I was wrong ;)

  • Tres jolie selection ! Cette couleur est vraiment chic et jolie.

  • I love burgundy, aubergine, deep purple, purple-brown or whatever it is called. I want it all!

Stuck at home without a credit card to do some online shopping :(

  • Jolie photo !

  • I’ve been wondering what your top is! It’s so great..

  • Nice burgundy color. Vary fashion for this season.
    http://streetfashionmore.blogspot.com/

  • Garance, this is awesome!!

SINCE WHEN does the SC come in burgundy? Is it new?

My navy one is my favorite bag, ever. So practical. Holds everything, hands-free. Hands-down best bag.

  • The fashion gods are fooling us still because I keep hearing the term “Oxblood” in reference to this color trend (it might just be a tad more red than this Burgundy, though).

Either way, I agree… it’s a lovely way to add color to smokey neutrals like grey during the Fall and Winter months. And I love that it feels warm, cozy, sophisticated, and sexy all at once!

    Be safe while Sandy passes!!

  • aubergine is a deep purple very different to burgandy (maroon, oxblood, bordeaux…) Shame on Grazia.

  • If not for the reddish tones, they look like chocolate. ;)

  • I am so much in love with this burgundy trend right now! And I think this color flatters me. Your blog is so inspiring, and sometimes I feel you can read people’s mind :-)

  • I really love this colour!!! the bag and the shoes are my favourite pictures!!!

    http://thestelstyle.com/

  • Stay safe in the storm! Even if you are thinking about fashion instead of food, at least it’s a way to take your mind of the craziness outside. I love this trend. I think it’s going to stick for a while. The color is perfect for fall/winter and does match pretty much anything.

    xoxo
    http://www.thewrittenrunway.com

  • Aubergine is more purple (has more blue in it) and burgundy is more wine color (has more red). I don’t wear burgundy much but I like the richness of these for fall. Also love the Marc Jacobs top!

“Oh, Garance, you are so shallow!” :))) C’est ce que j’aime et ce qui me trouble chez toi :)))

    http://loulune.wordpress.com/

  • Don’t let Sandy deprive you of your burgundy jeans!

    http://www.suspironews.blogspot.com

  • T’es à New York ?

  • Ha! We have the same jeans! Bought them last autumn and still love them! But I tend to wear them more often during fall and winter time. Love your collection! Mmmmmh! Let’s hope that this storm is being overrated, so snuggle up at home and for buying new jeans…. well Yes! There is always this one pair that’s missing ;-) xxx

  • Elizabeth October, 29 2012, 11:45 / Reply

I would say that aubergine is more purple than this, it looks more like oxblood (darker than burgundy but red tinged). My sister spent last year looking everywhere for oxblood items but couldn’t find what she wanted, this year they are everywhere. Perhaps she should be a trend predictor

  • I’m loving burgundy too, and that Marc Jacobs top of yours is to die for!!! That subtle sparkle is dreamy!

And, for what it’s worth, I think burgundy is a pretty classic Fall/Winter color (not like the neon yellow that we’ll look back on in a decade and cringe when we see it).

    xo,
    Ali

  • Well, I’m in my 50’s so I have all type of “vintage” burgundy and greay combinations you can imagine… and I was wondering a few days ago were was your top from, since I really foundit beautiful…. and yes Garance, go for another pair of jeans!!! Now I’m looking for a burgundy coat!!! (I’m from Spain, and the color for us is Burdeos!!!!)))

  • Fan de ces pièces :)

    Et particulièrement le sac !

    xx.

  • Being from London I know the colour under both names. I love the colour and at present have that colour on, in the form of a top with black jeans.

  • Yay for your studio, I’ve been working of building myself a similar set up!

I’m loving this color for a trend, I was getting a little color dizzy from all the brights from summer, no? So many colors, so many patterns I was starting to feel like I lived in a Tim Burton’s movie!

    http://www.houseofhemingway.com

  • Love this color! So chic and so sophisticated!

    xoxo

  • Garance I have never seen so many people with pizza boxes in my life. All the bread and beer in the supermarkets seems to have cleared out too:)

I have always loved burgundy ( or Bordeaux) it seems to be one of those forever returning fall colors. It’s really flattering though so I don’t mind!

  • Et avec le camel!

Je partage ton amour du gris. Que Dieu nous bénisse! Haha

    See you,

I really like this kind of posts…actually I have a similar section called “anything else things” on my blog that can be about a color or a travel as today… “American Life” :)!

    Lens&anythingElse

Et bon ouragan, on pense bien à toi !!

  • We love that colour this season! Its perfect for autumn! Especially we like the make up!

dear garance – i,t oo have fallen for burgundy – just bought a pair of
vegan sandals by jeffrey campbell – very cool – love them and oh so comfy.
    http://www.convertstyle.com/shoes/jeffrey-campbell
they call the color – ‘church wine’ – go figure!
i disagree with the french/english translation though – aubergine is PURPLE –
NOT burgundy – very different colors – non?

  • So funny! I just had this same thought about ox blood. I was thinking isn’t it just burgundy? I have lots of this color in my closet from seasons past that I wear quite often. I think it’s just a basic Fall color.
Here’s to wearing the colors we love no matter their name or status!

    Live. Love. Remember.

    vert foncé , marron et bordeaux ( je prefere “aubergine” un peu plus bleue) ce sont les faux noir de base , c’ est tres dur de ne pas s’ en sortir ;
    et sans oublier le marine super fonçé qui est l’ ubber black qui donne à la peau brune ou blonde les plus beaux effets, les plus jolis teints et les plus belles allures au monde: les marins, ines de la fressange, moi aussi!!!!!!!!!!!!;
    la couleur c’ est fou
    plein de bises

  • I have always loved burgundy, regardless of it being in fashion or not. It’s such a beautiful color; and yes, looks wonderful with gray. So, even when it is not in fashion anymore, I will still wear my burgundy.

    Love you Garance!

  • How funny. I think the same too! I bought green dark pants recently…thinking – nice, different than what I’ve seen lately. Now it’s all over the place for fall! So true. So many things going on in the world and I think do I really need another… shopping trip.

  • Jolie sélection comme tjs! J’adore surtout ton top marc jacobs!

    Merci
    Emma

  • I think you definetly should buy some more. Whether it’s burgundy, bordeaux, maroon or just wine red, this trend seems to re-appear every autumn/winter. Investing might not be such a bad idea :)

  • burgundy = bordeaux = bourgogne = oxblood = aubergine?
    hein?

    http://www.informedstyle.com

    bonne soiree a toi .

    Kate

    Merci !

Et bon courage pour l’ouragan !

  • OMG Garance! I was going to make a post on something similar to this, I was going to title it Sneaky Trends. It’s amazing how these things sneak up on us without us realizing. But mine isn’t about Burgundy, it’s slim fitted turtle-necks (can you imagine!), and those mini skirts with the “flippy” hems (pardon my inadequate fashion vocabulary)
I had one of those skirts some years ago, and it wasn’t my favorite, only for me to find myself wanting and collecting them now without realizing they were trending…and then I realized it was all Stella McCartney’s fault! (to mention a name)

PS I: Maybe I’ll still make my post.
PS II: You are divine Garance…xx

    http://www.stylishevafter.blogspot.com

  • Funny how color trends come and go – I prefer aubergine to burgundy – how about burgine as a new description? I just got rid of a pair of a pair of burgine cords and leather shoes. Can you ask for something back after giving them away? Maybe it’s time to invest in a few new pieces – I love the matchstick cords in Cabernet (another way of saying you know what) at J Crew. Actually I think this color is a good neutral that goes with a lot….especially grey. Yeah I love grey too and have all the different shades. Maybe you should do a post on the many shades of grey?

    my blogette: http://intrigueimports.wordpress.com

  • Lovely burgundy collection!! Love the shirt! xx

    http://www.creativityandchocolate.blogspot.com

  • Garance!!, I love burgundy, I have few pieces but when I wear them it’s sublime.
I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina and there is a storm here too!! Evacuated people and everything, it is a disaster.
Are you going to take pictures of the storm, (from the window of course)?? Stay safe!

  • Hello Garance,
this is a very nice post! Thank you for sharing.
Burgundy or bordeaux – i heard even cooler name recently, such as “oxblood” – to me they just all look the same and I love them the same way :)
    etiene-et-eugene.blogspot.com

  • this shade of burgundy is the best – dark and classic. and definitely goes with all colors.

  • This is my favourite colour! Its rich and decadent and so classic. I particularly love lipsticks in this colour plus always choose berries fruit smoothies! X Polly

  • Isn’t burgundy/bordeaux/oxblood in trend every fall/winter? I remember being very happy with it last year. So is it just -more- trendy this season, than it usually is? It has been a “hipster” color for a while, along with dusty navy blue and khaki green (see Wood Wood).

  • Garance-
I’ve been searching for your Marc Jacobs blouse for quite a while now and am having real trouble finding it. If you still have internet access, any chance you could help a gal out? I loooove it!
    xo,
    Ali

  • This does look like a lot of fun! :)

  • I love that burgundy is a “thing” right now! When I was little I had my room decorated in burgundy and navy. So happy to see it everywhere in fashion. :)

  • Troooop booooo :)
So while waiting for Sandy to stop by, je valide : Le panier @ topshop

  • I’m not sure but i think shoes are adistar racer :)

Garance you make me so laugh….**** Today is kind of a vacation day in New York. Everyone is stuck at home waiting for Hurricane Sandy to pass. Yeah, some people are out clearing grocery store shelves while I’m sitting at home wondering if a need another pair of burgundy jeans…

  • I love this trend because you don’t have to spend $1M to achieve it and the color (burgundy/ aubergine/ bordeaux) is very rich looking in most textures.

I found a cool burgundy sweater at Nasty Gal- it is short in the front and longer in the back. I like to wear solids with a texture or print so I have been wearing it with a Missoni skirt.

    Beautiful image, by the way:)

Enfin aubergine. Non j’exagère. (A peine en fait.)

  • Garance…. Do you know what sucks????

We little fashionista’s down here in the southern hemisphere (New Zealand to be precise) see all this beautiful stuff on your site & wonder how can we translate it into our wardrobes right now… you see, we are going into summer!

This presents a unique challenge, because, by the time it is Autumn down here, we are well and truly over any ‘trends’ or ideas that we see from you guys up in the Northern Hemisphere, yet our stores are packed with the stuff that is 6 months behind- sucky sucky sucky.

So a question – do you think burgandy is too heavy a colour for us to wear in summer – I was thinking about rocking it back with some white jeans for a fresher look?

Also, thank God for Net-a Porter and others where we can get our sticky mitts on fresh style right now!

  • Fun fact: the brits call eggplant “aubergine”. We Americans call eggplant…..eggplant.

I’m good with the facts, no? hehe

Amazing stuff, Garance! I also have some stuff in this color, but the funny thing is that this season they changed the name, now it’s oxblood.I always think how funny fashion is.

Hope you and all who are in the city are safe!

  • It’s my favorite colooorrr!! And I’ve been using the nickname “burgundylips” for so many years (for all my social media.. :D).. I wear make up and nailpolish in the color of burgundy for so many occasions.. thanks for this post! looove it!

  • If I wear this with lemon yellow or turquoise blue I shall be very happy. Otherwise the earthy colours make me look very washed out and sickly — its a blonde thing I think.

  • A lot of talk over this colour lately, similar to maroon but not quite haha, I like both, and am really liking those jeans!

    Besos

  • Garance, are u o.k? I mean, Sandy seams pretty stiff and difficult to handle!? Hope, it’ll pass soon! xxx

  • please tell us more about those adidas trainers!!!

  • Right now I am wearing wonderful blouse with bow in the very same color. I also have similar bag (which j’adore!) and I would really like to have these addidas tr’s. As for color itself, I love its complementarity with beige..

  • I absolutely love burgundy! and I’m so scared that the trend will pass and then it will be so difficult to find again! Also, the colour really suits me and I love it with a dark red lipstick on.

  • Burgundy for the win!

  • hi garance
i JUST bought wonderful winterboots in exactly that colour! and i just just love it… i have been thinking to buy grey jeans with them… it is also great with military-green! i thought: what an unsual clour i didnt know it was a trend :)
    xxx

  • Hello!

I love the burgundy collection! Where can we get that Marc Jacobs glittery top?

  • Sure hope you were all safe from “Sandy”, have got oodles of food and water and lots more time to contemplate delicious Burgundy. Get another pair of jeans I say…just to celebrate :)

  • Burgundy is a new love for me. I don’t know why I have avoided it in the past. I just re-discovered a burgundy velvet blazer in my closet and recently came across those Cole Haan heels. Since it’s yet another Hurricane Day for my office, perhaps tomorrow, I will paint my nails in Mac’s Carine Roitfeld “Underfire Red” – which looks like aubergine to me.

    Thanks for the post!

  • on pourrait même plutôt l’appeler “vin rouge”!!

  • Darling Garance, you are my girl crush, so cool and adorable :) I am so in love with those trainers that I made it to the Adidas store on Oxford Street today (I hate the crowds, but anything for that pair) – yet they don’t have them! I agree with a few people who posted above, it does look like an adistar racer. That style doesn’t come in a burgundy though, only a so-called red. If you can’t find the style name, perhaps you can share where you bought them with us :) Cheers x

  • THANK YOU for not calling it “oxblood.” I’m already over that name…

  • I like the photo!

  • Looking forward to winter 2013 in Capetown! I love combining grey with purple or aubergine accessories! It is less predictable than a true red. I made a blog post to help people differentiate between burgundy and aubergine as they are different colours. Have a look at: http://shopgirlcapetown.wordpress.com/2012/11/01/winter-trend-forecast-aubergine-and-burgundy/
    Enjoy!

Love the sneakers! Where can I find them??

  • You have the best sense of humour! Always find myself chuckling at your unexpected remarks and observations – though I should have grown to expect it by now :p

  • I love this Burgundy colour, I’m looking, for awhile, for a big sweathr in that colour.
    Michelle

  • Burgundy is my old time fav. I used to wear it in my twenties then I stopped for a while but never forgot. Suddenly for couple of years now it’s a trendy color. Well what ever is it I love the color. I’ve been looking at this picture (kind of stuck with it) and really wondering if I made a mistake to get the cobalt color LV-SC bag?! This burgundy (jasper) is simply gorgeous. In the store it didn’t seem such beautiful burgundy when I saw it first. Maybe in time and use the color shows off more or this is a newer version? I also got obsessed with that Baxter jeans so got one (from someone in Poshmark????). Love the Adidas too. Anyway, thank you for the great picture, very inspiring ????????????
