How do you carry your bag? Bag as clutch? Ignore the straps? Multiple cross-body mini bags? It says as much about you as, well, your actual bag does.

Season after season we are shown all of these different ways to carry your bags and after last week’s Carven show (where models were holding onto their clutches for dear life) Alex and I decided to dust off our AP Psychology notes and figure out the true meaning behind each bag carrying method…

(Disclaimer: I’m pretty sure I got a A- in AP Psych…)

1. The shlutch (shield-clutch): You are a little bit paranoid (sorry, I had to say it). You turn corners carefully and won’t watch a scary movie without the protection of a giant pillow or boyfriend to hide behind. You guard your clutch like you guard your secrets… which you definitely wish you had more of. Relax dear shlutch girl, we love you even without the drama! [Spotted at Carven.]

2. The Blutch (bag as clutch): You aren’t here to conform, you’re going to carry your handbag however the h#@& you want, okay?! (Even if that means you’re lugging a duffle bag under your arm, making it nearly impossible for you to use your hands). But because you do whatever you want, you probably also have someone else doing whatever you tell them. Your assistant handles your texting, your taxi hailing and sometimes, even your waving at friends for you. [Spotted at Chloé, Céline and last season at Topshop.]

3. The Bag Lady: You’re an intern. But not a canvas tote carrying intern, you are a seriously chic intern. You’re an intern straight off of The Hills. You’re John Galliano interning for Oscar de la Renta. You still do the job, meaning you run errands and bring back the daily coffee order but there is no way you’re going to carry all of that stuff in a fabric tote. No way! You’re sorting it all into three gorgeous handbags. And who cares if it’s not the most practical, you’re a fashion intern after all. [Spotted at Balenciaga and last season at Chanel.]

Acne Fall 2014

4. The ‘What back?’ Backpack: You are a bit of a commitment-phobe. You love a trend/accessory/color/guy in theory, but when it comes down to actually owning it, you fall a little short. That Big Mac smells like heaven, but you won’t finish the last bite, that gorgeous guy looks like heaven, but you won’t say yes when he gets down on one knee and you want to be that backpack wearing fashionista, but you’re not ready to put it on your back. Baby steps little lamb, you’ll get there. [Spotted at Acne.]

As for me, I carry my bags pretty much the way they’re supposed to be carried.

Does it mean I lack personality? Should I try wearing my clutch over my head today? That could totally be my thing !? No?

What do you think?

  • i love the acne backpack! an instant classic! :)

  • Nice post!!! I like how the model is wearing the bag in the second photo!

  • Hmmm. I carry a shoulder bag and I wear it (gasp) over my shoulder. Am I hopelessly conservative — or maybe subversively conventional? Either way, I’d rather have my hands free and it reduces the chance I will leave my purse on the counter in Starbucks.

  • Love this post and how the model is wearing the clutch in the first photo. The photo colors are great!

  • I loved this collection !!

  • mdr !!

  • This looks so good!

Greetings from Germany and thanks for sharing!

Free hands is my moto…So, I always buy bags that I can carry on my shoulder or crossing my body or, even, the infamous backpack (huge fan, but in the “lady” version: leather and smaller). I have some clutches, but don’t wear them very often.

  • Since I’m guessing none of you have children, you’ve forgotten us mothers with young children who can’t tolerate anything but messenger bags!!

  • Hahahaha, yeah, bag over your head! You’re hilarious!

  • Love this! I’m surprised you didn’t mention the shoulder bag carried in the crook of the elbow? I do carry my bag that way on occasion but usually I just carry it on my shoulder… with my hand grasping the handles to keep it there. I wonder what that says about me?? :)

  • My bagologie is ‘I live in Paris and I’m afraid of pickpockets’, bag as baby.

  • Hahaha, super fun post :-D Carrying things on the head, well we might better leave that difficult task to the graceful woman all over Africa ;-) I was always amazed by that ability! They carry very heavy duty on their heads! I carry my bags just like you Garance and honestly…. on the runway it looks very chic, when the models carry their bags in a fancy way, but in reality, no thank you, I need my hands free and so I carry my bag either over the shoulder or at my wrist, cross-body is actually one of my favorite ways. I own some clutches, but somehow I almost never wear them…. I think when you wear your bag as it’s meant to be carried, your personality type is a pragmatic one, your the woman on the go, with a full schedule and you love to carry a beautiful bag, but you don’t have time to think about stuff like, “how should I carry my bag…” ;-) xxx

  • Ooooh! I love these bags way too much!

    xx from LA,
    Kristi

  • I always wear a rack sac, I think it’s really comfortable

  • I’m super boring. The last year I’ve been wearing only cross body bags. They are just SO comfortable! Now when I actually have to hold a bag it feels like such a burden. #dramaqueen

    http://newbornfanatic.wordpress.com

  • Stuck on my cross body bags too. Whenever I carry something else — I start obsessing about where I’m going to put it down…or hang it up…or have it on my lap!

Really — do all these fashionable women put their bags on the floor? In winter?

Always, always – a handbag or small duffle-bag of soft leather, with messenger-bag length strap for day, and hand held for the rare nights we head out on our own (I’m one of those with kids); or a lightweight, tan leather rucksack.

  • [As for me, I carry my bags pretty much the way they’re supposed to be carried.

Does it mean I lack personality?]

It means you’ll be remembered for yourself rather than for your bags. OK, G?

  • I am dreaming of carrying my bag as clutch but it’s just a dream…
The first photo is interesting. Thanks

  • I believe the bag itself is much more important than the way you carry them. The material, colour combinations, etc. says a lot more about a persons personality than the way they carry their bags

  • My run to, everyday, practical bag is a black, cross body messenger bag. Hum? I wonder what it says about MOI?

  • A quand les sacs connectés ?

  • Magali March, 6 2014, 2:10 / Reply

  • I didn’t think I’ll find an option for me here, but there it is in the last part! I love my fjallraven backpacks in all their colors and I wear them both on my back, as they are supposed to be worn, but also in my hand, when I feel like it. Should we call it ‘a bagpack’?
