This post kind of makes no sense. Just warning you, in case you end up wondering.

xxxxx

I mean I did pretty great.

I left for a month. I went to Rome, Florence, Milan, Paris, Rio, Sao Paulo, Ajaccio, Porto Vecchio and then again to Paris. I knew that I was only allowed one suitcase on a few of my flights so I had to be super minimalist.

Oh here, let me give you a few techniques I’ve learned because I get a lot of e-mails asking for packing advice.
So in my suitcase weighing no more than 50 lbs (the max) for the entire month (!!!)(Kill me now!) I put:

  • Thin white t-shirts. They’re light and you can easily wash them by hand.
  • In the same vein, I recommend washing your underwear by hand. It takes three seconds before bed and they’re dry by morning (My sister, the Perfecta Laetitia, taught me this one).
  • White denim shorts. They get dirty easily, but they go with everything (and you can make your mother wash them as soon as you get to Corsica).
  • Two pairs of jeans (one white, one cream). Not the most practical, but I’m just so obsessed with white these days.
  • A cashmere cardigan. (wool works too, it’s just that cashmere makes it sound more “fashion model advice!”)
  • My military jacket, which works with everything.
  • A black blazer.
  • Classy pajamas that I have to show you so I can putz around all classy like (even though I sleep naked, like all top models) on vacation.
  • A nice party outfit. Skirt + Peter Pilotto shirt, can be separated if needed.
  • A white dress shirt, this one actually. Amazing, light, and goes with everything. Wear it to the beach or around town.
  • A few silk shirts. Yeah, they’re light but they get wrinkly super fast. To avoid it, don’t fold them. Lay them flat, one on top of the other, right at the bottom of your suitcase. They’re super easy to wash by hand as well and they dry well if you put them nicely on a hanger.
  • One workout outfit (which I wore only once. SHAME.)
  • A travel outfit (sweatpants, ballet flats, scarf).
  • Ah yes! Two men’s shirts, light and huge. I wear them during long shoots to protect me from the sun (+ my SPF50)(buttoned up all the way up my neck)(with sleeves down to my hands). Paranoid much?
  • And then two pairs of sandals, one pair of heels, one pair of slippers, a scarf, and a few random things and there you go!

You know what kills me every time though? Toiletries…

I am just not the kind to pack them well without a whole bunch of little Muji containers.

Soooo, I kind of end up bringing 25 liters of SPF 50, 45 hair products, big pschiiiiiiit of Evian… All of it.

But still, I had done pretty great.

Except by the end of it I couldn’t stand any of my clothes anymore. After a month of wearing the same stuff and even if you found a good way to wash everything, and even after a week of a fashion strike, you want to commit suicide when you look inside your Rimowa.

Quick side note. Rimowa is a super pricey metal suitcase that’s supposed to last a lifetime. After this trip, it was just as beat up as I was.
Wheels broken, metal torn (srsly) and the little clasps totally crushed. And it just so happens that the guarantee doesn’t work in New York, jerks. I was lucky that it didn’t explode in the bottom of the plane.
OKAY.

What we’re leading up to here is that the last day of the last part of my trip from hell, I had no idea what to wear. Everything seemed dirty, ugly, so played out, blah, I was so tired of everything and I knew I was going to be filmed that day (for the behind-the-scenes of the shoot)(oh hell, getting filmed when you’re taking photos is the worst. You’re already ugly enough)(and compared with the top models all around me)(in a giant men’s shirt + SPF 50), yet still I was so suitcase depressed that put on my comfy travel pants – you see just how low I had fallen.

And it wasn’t like… Isabel Marant sweatpants with high heels and everything like in 2010, nope. Flats and only a t-shirt that barely survived the suitcase explosion.

And you know what?

(and that’s where this post turns into a free fall, but who cares, I’m going on with it)

Everyone loved my outfit.

(I know, a weak ending to an all-over-the-place post. Keep this up and I’ll have to start writing shows for Gossip Girl)

But seriously, everyone liked it.

(just an FYI, whenever I repeat something like that, it really just means I’m trying to figure out what to write next)

Everyone: the hair-stylist, the camera man, the artistic director, Lou Doillon, the baker, everyone.

(you think I’m kidding about the baker because of the ridiculousness of my story, but I’m not. That part’s all truth)

As far as I’m concerned, I packed my bags like a pro.

  • Haha same thing happened to me when I was on a buying trip in Berlin – I had nothing left to wear so was forced to pair an animal print skirt with a blue and white gingham skirt, which I thought was pretty questionable, but turned out everyone I crossed path with thought the outfit was inspired! It’s all about random mixes!

  • Illustration sublime! Arf!
    Xo

  • and spanx that can double as a maillot!

Grand bien me fasse apparemment :-)

  • Great tips! I get these problems all the time though. Most of the time, I just throw on something really basic and add a few accessories if I’m out of ideas.

  • J’en ris encore!!!! ;D merci pour ce post complètement déganté!!!

  • I hate packing suitcases and I hate living out of a suitcase. But I love to travel.

  • Your illustrations are amazing! I really need one for my blog :)

Parfaita.

  • This story is perfection– total Garance– and yet there’s something important missing… photos!!! We need at least one photo of the outfit that everyone loved. Because I seriously can’t picture it in my head. Pleeeeease??
    xo,
    Ali

  • The toiletries get me every time too!! I think I’m doing oh so well with my random yet completely overthought mix of “spartan chic” separates and then I lug my bursting-at-the-seams dopp kit in only to find it just won’t fit. Anywhere.

Love the packing list and completely agree it’s those inspired (or uninspired?!) mixes you’re forced to make at the tail end of a trip that garner the most compliments! Go figure…

  • A very endearing post, your honesty is so refreshing!

  • Garance! I was on your flight from Paris to NYC Sunday (blonde, black & white striped top). You looked chic as always. I thought “why didn’t I wear my sweats like Garance?!”. Your packing advice will be very useful on my next trip. I didn’t want to bother you, but love your blog!

  • Interesting, interesting. What a nice post.
My plan for my next trip to NY will be to pack stuff that has holes, is torn and is quite old already. After wearing it over the day I will just throw it away there and buy new stuff, which I start wearing the next day. So I will come back from the trip with a lot of new stuff and the old clothes are gone.

    Greets, Anja

  • Good post! I am going on a roadtrip in Europe and am rather limited as I have to pack in a duffelbag and I cannot bring anything expensive as we are camping, it’s a challenge!

  • Garance I love you!!! You are so hilarious, you put a smile on my face everyday!

I agree with you, toiletries are what kills me too, I have oily skin and am prone to acne, so travelling with face lotion, face wash, serums, eye creme, cotton pads, and toner are a must, they take about half the space in my luggage. And on top of this, the perfume, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner (I have fuzzy hair so not all shampoo works for my hair) that I can’t live without and leave behind when I travel.

  • Garance, I love your posts. Reading them is shiny moment of my day:-) thank you

  • Oh, I love packing lists, ’cause like others, this is something I struggle with. I know just what you mean about being sick of everything in the suitcase by the end of a trip. even if I have things I haven’t worn, I’m sick of looking at them. And don’t get me started on the toiletries… I always have too much of this and not enough of that.

    Great story.

  • Anja, I agree…my last trip to NY …big suitcase only with underwar, found hotel next to the shopping centre, came home with a lot of new things:-)

  • Fabulous illustration – they always have so much movement in them. I always like to pack lots of different types of scarves.

    http://illustratedlines.blogspot.co.uk/

  • Great post and illustration! Love reading your blog!

    http://www.thefashioncuisine.com

    Alors quelle marque ton jogging?

    jolie ton illustration :-)

    Bises

  • Love it. That always happens to me. When I “NEED” to look good and I have nothing to wear and feel cute in nothing. So I just put on ‘something’ that I totally don’t want to wear but I have no choice left, and it turns out as a hit. Planning ahead doesn’t always work!

    xoxo

  • You are a pro . I love packing lists. I never know what to pack and I can totally relate to getting so bored with everything at the end of the trip! Let’s see the sweatpants t shirt pics!!!! Great post as usual.

LOL

  • Totally adorable!! These are my favourite posts. I love a good packing list!!

  • I wear my fathers shirts to get away from the sun and slober SPF50 all over. To me my skin seems really brown and I compalsively examine part of my body that were exposed to the sun after I get home afterward –> that is paranoid!)) Everyone though says that my skin is really pale. I don’t get it.

  • Haha thanks for the advice! I’m packing for NY today!

  • hi garance. i read the whole thing, and loved it. your posts are the best wake-up routine for me. all the best with your return to HOME. cheers. l.

  • Skirt suggestions? Have been looking for some great options for a while

Allez savoir !

  • Salut,

  • Do you handwash Equipment shirts? I am tempted to buy one but only if i can handwash it!! (dry clean is too much pain for me and you if i remeber correctly!)
    Merci!

  • Garance, I’m sooooo desperate, where are the sweatpants from? I’ve been searching & searching to no avail. I need well fitted lightweight grey jersey seats, not fitted, not baggy. Help me please.

  • C’est vrai ton post a n’a ni queue ni tête mais il a le mérite de m’avoir bien fait rire. J’aime beaucoup l’illustration surtout comment tu as dessiné les lunettes de soleil. Fallait y penser.

  • I LOVE YOU!

  • You’re awesome! This post was incoherent and amazing. Just like your outfit!

  • Tu as un style … ! :)))

    http://www.loulune.wordpress.com

    Comme quoi, less is more.

Can you give me tips on how to wash silk shirts? I love wearing silk because they are so light and easy to layer, but I’m always afraid to get them dirty because that means I have to take them out to dry clean. Help?

  • Haha, so funny and recognizable! When I think I did great job when it comes to packing I always forget to pack my toiletries and then we have a problem ;p My husband always wonders if I try to pack my whole closet but I actually bring almost nothing (I think) untill I look at his suitcase :P And when we have arrived at our destination I miss most of my clothes at home and hate what i have with me…Oh well…

  • Just put me off Rimowa, which I have been lusting after for so long…

  • Hi Garance,

That’s a great list. I have been looking for that white shirt dress since you have posted, where can I find it? I would really appreciate if you could give me some recs.
    Thank you
    Hera

(On y croit.

  • HOME SWEET HOME!!!!

hope the traveling subsides for a while… =)

  • Haha, totally imagining a suitcase explosion in the bottom of an airplane, silk t-shirts and sweatpants all over the place. seriously packing clothes for a long trip: horrible. Next time I need to do that I’ll rely on this post :)

Merci!
    Gros bisou !!!
    Love
    a

  • As long as you don’t start wearing your ugg boots to photo shoots! ha ha

  • Hilarious, Garance! Merci pour ce poste!

  • Crap! Tomorrow I have to pack for ten days in the Netherlands and two in Paris. Not as glamorous as your destinations, but I had my wardrobe figured out until I read your humorous post. Well, since you packed and wore sweatpants, I am giving myself permission to take my black crochet UGGS just because I want to! Won’t wear them in the daylight or in public, but I WILL pretend that they are cashmere! Thoroughly enjoy your blog….

  • Srsly, Garance – you write so privately, personally (and on the other hand not to intimately of course), that one just want to read your memoir (i think i can call it this way) each day. I started to read your blog for your photos, and i kind of miss the way you shoot people few years ago, but instead i started to grow my devotion to your writing, which is even more satisfying for me. I like to get back here each day. Frankly saying i check for new posts few times a day :) I just need them to make my day better, to comfort myself. They are so – i don’t know – honest? It is maybe to big word for blog about fashion, but yes – you are sincere and frank. Very sincere and straight forward. Not trying too hard, no playing someone else. You are this kind of blogger that if you were an actress they would call you girl from neighborhood. Summarizing – huge thanks for please my inner reader :) And: good night and good luck!

  • great post! Can you reveal where you buy your shirts?

  • It always takes me a very long time to pack my clothes. It is important that the right wardrobe would suit to the destination and with the people around. You got some very nice destinations yourself. I envy you!

  • My friend told me ,,If you are going to Milan take lighter suitcase and MOOOOORRRREEEE money, girl!”
    Great post Garance! as always:)
    Bissou!!!!

  • garance thak you for the packing list. love that white dress and your writing style

  • Excellent post Garance!!!!!!!!!
3 valises?

  • this is perfect. your posts make me smile because they bring such an energy to the fashion life. xxx

  • Your so talented…love this illustration!

  • Probably that’s the way I am going to pack for my Paris trip this September…! Only I will lower the cost…..a lot by replacing Isabel Marant with Zara. Just to get in touch with reality after reading your post, which always makes me dream… dream… and dream…!

    MERCI !

  • Whenever I’m in a rush, grabbing at piles for something decent to wear, not really caring, with messy hair and last night’s eyeliner, that’s often when I feel the best. Sweatpants- when done right- can give off the confidence that comes with the mentality: that’s right people! I’m wearing sweatpants! I don’t care what you think! Nonchalance.

  • Ahahaha magique ton article Garance =)

  • What are the perfect pair of travel pants? I hate traveling in jeans and everything else seems to wrinkle and look so messy!
    Help? Thanks!

  • J’adore ce post!

  • Oui!

  • Great post! I love your honesty :)

  • one word on suitcases: TUMI

i had a stiletto go through the zipper of mine recently, and while they couldn’t replace the exact same snakeskin print, they did ship me new suitcase post haste.

    LOVE Tumi.

  • You read our minds? I was looking for advice on packing and there you go
    Merci!
    :D

  • Oh my god, this is hilarious! ! ! Merciii :)

  • hello, garance! i enjoyed reading this post.
i recently went to london and paris for two weeks and worried about what to pack since it was my first time in europe! someone sent me this youtube video…it works! i couldn’t believe what i fit into my small suitcase. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDn9l20NlWw&feature=youtube_gdata_player
(don’t mind the awful clothing he’s packing!)
p.s. although i packed some great items, i wasn’t able to wear half of them since paris and london in may felt like december. :(

  • Well done for mentioning Rimowa! Power to the people.

  • this is such a great story! perfect example of why “just be yourself” is the best fashion advice out there. :)

  • what sort of magical sweatpants were they? I think I need a pair!!

  • Bon alors :

  • Garance! Try a TUMI suitcase…. Those do last a “model” travelling lifetime….

  • Garance!! Merci!! As always the best advice!
T es toute simplement la meilleure!

  • Hi Garance! I am trying to learn French so I always try to read your posts in French and then use google translate when I can’t understand something. I just thought you might find it funny that when I couldn’t understand “pour me la péter fille chic” I google translated it and it informed me that your pajamas are “farting girl chic.” Maybe I should use a different translation site! :) Love love love your blog!

  • You frenchwomen make everything look so chic all the time. Je suis jealous!

  • jajajaaaa, I was laughing out loud while reading this fun post !!! wonder how you looked like in that outfit that everyone liked in the end. could you show a picture in another post ?

  • Garance, where do you buy your sweatpants from? I would love to know because I am travelling in September but I don’t even own a pair.

I welcome advice from the readers too. Any idea where I could get a pair that is comfortable and stylish?
    Thanks a bunch,
    Yuliya.

  • Ah ah ! Bisou bisou

Garance, I have to say this is up there at the top of my favorite posts of yours. So witty and honest- refreshing, really! This is fantastic advice; all of these wonderfully accessible posts you’ve done recently have really encouraged me to simplify my wardrobe and buy things that I know will last for years. Things that, like those sweatpants and your lovely utility jackets, require little effort! Keep it coming!

(Oh, and just to echo everyone else, I’d just love to see those sweatpants…)

  • Garance!

I was so double minded but kept going back to a pair of designer sweat pants again and again…finally I bought them!
I’m so glad i did cause I imagined thirty ways to wear them…and hen when i read your article above, I’m simply over joyed!
By the way, I love your fashion videos.

  • Jesus girl, how did you manage to go to all those places in one month?? Have you found the secret to teleportation?

And for a second I thought you visited Porto, which is my hometown. But then I read the Vecchio and was all like :( oh.

I had to pack for a two-month trip with a 50lb limit too, and I totally nailed it! I even had space left to bring a bunch of souvenirs with me, woohoo!

    http://captivelouise.wordpress.com/

  • I pack small. A carryon only after having my luggage broken into 3 times. Brazil, LA and Italy my luggage was pillaged. Now I only take two colours, nothing I adore and minimal. I am such a shopper, I have to ship anything I buy home or try to hide it in the luggage of who ever I am travelling with. People can’t believe how little I travel with. I never travel with a jacket, even in winter, I buy one where I travel or suck up the cold with sweaters and scarves. I have a lot of coats ha ha.

  • Wow, you pack a lot…I agree with you that the facial cremes, etc take up most of the suitcase…I travel a lot….My formula remains to be….3 day out fits, 2 night out fits…plus a pair of heels and some other minor basic pieces…My golden rule is to pack my favorite pieces…Works every time…and thanks God for H& M….when I need a missing piece.

  • Absolutely AMAZING! I love. You were the biggest inspiration when i started illustrating a few years back, now working as a full time designer, fashion illustrator, and artist! I adore you.

  • Garance, you rock !! Posts like these make my day :)

PS I pack more toiletries than clothes. My lip gloss addiction always make me carry like 100 lip glosses and well in the end I just use one or two. EVERY TIME I swear…

  • I’m already buying a pair of sweatpants. Nice. xo

    Bisous Garance!

  • moi aussi! the toiletries do my head in. every. single. time.

  • seriously, I LOVE how you write.. i lovee it. This is the first article I’ve read in your blog and I loved it, I got surprised haha. You really are an inspiration lovely.

  • You should take a photo of your suitcase and show us! =D

  • I’m not by any means a model, but I do travel a lot for work and I love your sweatpants outfit. Over the years I’ve found that yoga pants and a flowy top are my go-to travel outfit, for all classes of travel, and recently found the perfect pair of pants: the “Everyday” pant by Lucy (around $80). They fit amazingly, look like business trousers, feel like sweatpants, and even have little zip pockets that don’t bulge like other pockets but are perfect for your boarding pass and a credit card or two. Bonus: they are lightweight enough to be comfortable in southeast Asian humidity and come in both black and gray. Highly recommend!

    You’re so adorable!
The type of person I’d love to have lunch with. Great Advice :)

  • I’ve been looking at all of the travel posts on here to help me pack. I’ve never really traveled.

And the Gossip Girl comment? Priceless.

  • Hahaha this post is awesome!! Very nice and funny written!
