Mexico on My Mind

Vous savez, ce qu’on ressent quand on découvre une ville pour la première fois et qu’on a tout de suite l’impression qu’on pourrait y vivre ? Mais vraiment, pas de façon fantasmée. Ça ne m’est arrivé que deux fois. Une fois à Mexico, et à la Nouvelle-Orléans. Je suis allée à Mexico il y a des années, et je ne m’attendais pas à ce que ça me fasse cet effet-là. C’était sublime, l’architecture était magnifique, la nourriture délicieuse (à la fois bon marché et sophistiquée), les gens adorables, les musées incroyables. J’étais insatiable. Et là, une de mes meilleures amies vient d’y déménager pour le boulot ce qui me donne une véritable excuse pour y aller régulièrement avaler mon poids en tacos.
J’espère y aller dans quelques mois, quand NY sera encore ensevelie sous la neige, et j’ai hâte de découvrir ce que la ville me réserve comme surprises depuis mon dernier séjour. Ma copine n’y est que depuis un mois, elle commence tout juste à prendre ses marques. Alors j’aimerais bien savoir si vous avez des trucs à me recommander pour mon prochain voyage là-bas. J’ai déjà commencé une petite liste, mais s’il vous plaît, dites-moi ce que je ne dois pas rater à Mexico !
I live in Mexico City (I’m from Yucatán. You know, Chichén Itzá, Cancún, etc.) and I always feel like I don’t take advantage of all the things it has to offer, but I have a few recommendations: spend a whole Sunday morning at La Lagunilla, the antiques market and visit the Chapultepec Forest and Castle. Go to Xochimilco to eat and drink on a trajinera (a boat). The colonia Juárez an colonia Roma areas are full of great architecture, new restaurants and local boutiques, take a long walk there. For some « Mexican curious » shopping and great food, go to San Ángel on a Saturday. Even if the things they sell are not your style, it’s always a fun experiencie in one of the most beautiful areas of the city. I also love taking long walks in Coyoacán and drinking tea and delicious organic desserts at Ruta de la Seda Café.
I’m sure you’ll find lots of city guides and restaurant recommendations, since the city is kind of « fashionable » right now but if you have questions I’d love to help :)

Tout dépend du quartier où tu vas séjourner, la ville est tellement grande ! J’y habite depuis 18 mois maintenant, à ta dispo pour idées de visite, adresses de resto, et tips pour s’adapter à la vie locale
For a great food experience you should definitely visit Mercado Roma and La Condesa, amazing areas to explore and try different small restaurants and bars owned by locals.
If you’re a coffee fan, Cafebreria El Péndulo is an extraordinary coffee+library unlike pretty much anything anywhere else. Also Cielito Querido Café is a pretty nice and cozy place.
And last, but not least, you must have a walk around the Soumaya Museum, the architecture and collections are awesome.

Go to Pantera Fresca for the most original and cute icecles. My favorite is « Dead Gummy Bears, » which is lime with gummy bears frozen inside.
The Xaman Bar is a part of the city that is gaining popularity and their cocktails are great
Breakfast at Churros El Moro is a must
Dinner at Rosetta or lunch at Belmondo never gets old
As far as activities- have fun and drink your heart out in Xochimilco, totally worth the day trip on a weekend.
Rent a bike and enjoy Reforma on a Sunday when they close the avenue to car traffic and it’s 100% cyclists
Walk around La Roma, Condesa and Polanco and people watch : )

Frida Kahlo has a wonderful Museum there. great old buildings in the center of the city. It is crowded but a fun place to explore. Enjoy.

The Opera House, the extraordinary Pre Colombian museum, the ceviche at the San Angel Saturday market!, both Frida and Diego’s houses at Coyoacan, a trip out to Tepotzlan for lunch and market. Mexico City is a feast for the eyes! And mouth. And so much more – those are the wonderful things I remember.
You cannot miss Casa Barragán if you love architecture but you must make reservations. It is my favorite places on the planet. Frida’s house is also a must see when in DF to get a perspective into her life. If the line is too long, head over to Frida & Diego’s house in San Angel. Afterwards you must eat at San Angel Inn and try the profiteroles. To die for. As for food, in Mexico City you are not short on the amount of delicious meals you will eat. You cannot miss Biko, Pujol, Quintonil, Tori Tori and Mercado Roma. Drinks at Limantour, Dixon, Gin Gin and MM Roy are a must. Grab breakfast at Panaderia Rosetta on Calle Havre and walk over to Cordoba 25 to look at the current art exhibition. For shopping obviously Masaryk and El Palacio de los Palacios (the new Palacio de Hierro in Polanco). For local designers check out Yakampot, Roma Quince, Onora, Sandra Weil, Anatole 13, and Common People. Hope you love it!
