Rest
6 years ago by
Apologies to our english-speaking readers, because this is about Charlotte Gainsbourg’s first album in 7 years. 7 years! But totally worth the wait. “Rest” is sung in French for the most part, which is unusual (unfortunately) for Gainsbourg, so I’m sorry you can’t enjoy this mystical, half-whispered, almost transcendental album. But the upside is you can sing out to theatrical wedding vows on “My Deadly Valentine”, one of the few english tracks on the album, which features Dev Hynes of Blood Orange (Big fans here at the studio!). Other cool collaborators include SebastiAn and Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, who produced my favorite track on the album, “Kate”.
The whole thing is haunting, theatrical, delicate and graciously tragic. Almost cathartic really. But maybe play something more cheerful for the holidays? Keep this one for the gloomy NY snow days.
Great post

Comme si la langue était un frein à la compréhension de la beauté d’un album!! :/
Pas du tout, mais je trouve tout simplement que les paroles de cet album sont particulièrement bouleversantes x
You can’t enjoy foreign music when you’re English-speaking?
You definitely can! I just think that the writing made the album that much more intriguing x
