Oh, Iris!

Is there any character in fashion quite like Iris Apfel?
I went and saw her documentary the other day, and I truly loved it. You should go see it. Now. Tonight.
It’s more than a peek inside her expansive (room upon room) closet, which is filled with the most unique, colorful items you can imagine. The film is also an insight into the unyielding, curiosity-driven mind of a woman in her 90s who refuses to live life by anyone’s rules but her own… She’s the opposite of what G talked about in her Editor’s Letter this week — Iris refuses to follow the flock.
There are also really intimate moments that show how deeply in love she is with her husband, Carl. It’s beautiful and heartwarming, and vibrant — and they live in the most eclectic, crazy house… But you really need to watch the film to know the full story!!
Have you seen it? What other documentaries have you loved?
Iris is the name of the Greek goddess symbolizing the rainbow. Appropriate, yes? : -)
and Apfel means apple – and she really comes across like a crisp and juicy apple, doesn’t she?
This looks amazing! I will definitely watch it – just for her closet and thoughts on love!
Warm Regards,
Alexandra

Loved it! I laughed the entire time, what a character. She’s absolutely fabulous.
I don’t know if this is going to be in theaters in France, but I would love to see it !
By the way, I love your posts Neada ! Thank you for your great discoveries ;)
I’ve got to see this. I love Iris’s style — so bold, bright, & funky. :]

(cf Bill Cunningham)
Looking forward to this. Just saw “Dior and I” and loved it. The humanity and gorgeous fashion are spellbinding. Also, there is much for managers in any industry to take away from this film.
Iris is currently also the covergirl of “Annabelle”, the main fashion magazine here in Zurich. (http://www.annabelle.ch/leben/kultur/zu-besuch-bei-stil-ikone-iris-apfel-37964)

I saw the documentary and I love her sense of humor, her approach to life and her love for her husband. She had so much courage to make many of the decisions she did as a woman in her time such as not having a child, starting your own business and wearing what she wanted rather than follow rules I really identified with her not expecting to be seen as a fashion icon as I have been so surprised at being featured along with her on lists of older women in fashion. We are both accidental icons. I also got to see her in person after the documentary which added to the inspiration. She made me remember that the most important thing is being genuine and authentic and I think of her when I start to lose my way.

I can’t wait to see this in the theater. I saw “Dior and I” a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised how inspired I felt after watching it.
Saw her shopping in Hollywood the other day…..two words….STAR POWER.

Neada- this is a fabulous documentary about contemporary artist Carmen Herrera, who has a similar joie de vivre as Iris. It’s probably screening in NYC. http://www.the100yearsshow.com/#carmenherrera
I love her. I need to see this movie. This is not a woman who would wear her nail polish chipped just because “all the cool people are doing it these days.”
Saw Iris Thursday night and absolutely loved it! Also recently watched The Eye Has to Travel (about Diana Vreeland) on Netflix and loved that too.
Quel dommage…
Dior & I is not to be missed!
I’m a huge fan of such documentary ! I love everything made by Loic Prigent (like “la ligne Balmain”). I’m also a huge fan of “the day before”.
I love docmentary Bill Cunningham New York
Is that a new one or you are talking about the one from 2014? I’m confused!
