I was walking in the streets of Brooklyn with Zuzanna and she was telling that when she is putting on an outfit, she always tries to follow these rules :
One thing new, one thing vintage and one thing from her mother*. Then I wonder if she added one inexpensive thing and one luxe thing because as she was talking a big truck went by making a huge noise that covered her voice and then she had to jump on the L train to go to a casting.
So here we go, Zuzanna’s math : Alexander Wang top, vintage Armani short/skirt from Poland, Celine bag, shoes from J.Crew (I think that’s what I heard, big truck again) and a pair of vintage YSL sunglasses.
Let’s talk about fashion math again, I find it a very interesting subject. Kisses !

c’est marrant je n’y avais jamais pensé sous cet angle disons “mathématique” mais j’essaie aussi de mixer du old + new et cela sans m’être jamais dit de ne pas déroger à cette ‘règle’.. mais en l’appliquant toujours presque systématiquement..
ça fait plaisir de voir les rayons du soleil qui sont ici (geneve) absents avec une telle assiduité !!!

Lorsque je fais des folies dans les magasins, eh oui je fais des folies étant donné que 1/ je bosse jusqu’à ce que les magasins ferment le soir et
2/ les we je ne peux pas toujours
3/ Je me lance des challenge qui me donnent l’impression de ne pas être (si) superficielle que ça.
…ce qui génèrent une énooooooooooooooorme frustration shopping.
Donc je finis par mettre mon short orange en soie avec un sweat doudou que j’ai acheté pour mon homme (sitôt offert, sitôt piqué… comment fait-il pour me supporter?!!!), et un petit col en fourrure acheté pendant les soldes mais of course, de la nouvelle collection!
Bref, du total neuf, et cela le lendemain même de l’achat, voir le soir même si je ne mâte pas en pyj des épisodes de mad men….
bref, mixer neuf, vieux, vintage, j’y arrive pas.

Yes, I just realized that I do color math . . . nerdy but true. These days I’m going for three colors. Like if I start with a black and white outfit, I’ll throw in a third color or color family (shades of brown or pink-beige or blues) to keep it from looking like a formula (OK, to keep it from looking like an easy to decipher formula). But I love mono-chromatic outfits too (what formula is that? 1=1). And I have to stay away from really complicated color math, i.e. many different colors put together magically . . . I love to see other women who do it so effortlessly (probably because they are more artists than mathematicians when it comes to colors) but that’s too advanced for me.

Ha Ha I was scrolling down to leave my comment when I saw Shini’s and I was just about to say the same thing. Although I live in Poland right now and have for four years I have never found a vintage store, just used clothing. Proudly advertised as clothes from UK or US but all it is is the rejects from those countries, most stuff is from Tesco or Walmart. Topshop would be a score. So please have Zuzanna share how one shops amazing vintage in Poland.

Perso je vois pas trop l’utilité de se fixer des règles hyper strictes en manière de fringues mais ceci dit j’aime l’idée d’associer les maths à la mode et dans son cas l’ensemble est ravissant, spécialement le sac et les lunettes !

Poland is known for great vintage finds for fifty cents a piece!:) I come from the city on the border with Germany, Szczecin, it’s only 2hrs from Berlin and all the goodies flow from the rest of EU. Some of the stuff is dated but over years my Mum has collected pieces like Chanel shoes, Kenzo jackets, wacky JPG green leggings (though I still haven’t found courage and occasion to wear them ha ha), camel Jil Sander coat, lots of designer clothes for kids (baby Dior etc), not to mention incredible fur coats from pre-war times. Most of it is below $5 as the price translates into the weight. There is still a belief in Poland that high street brands such as H&M, Mango, Topshop are way better than vintage, used, second hand clothing, only because they are brand new. It doesn’t take just one vintage escapade, my Mum has local places she checks few times a week, it has turned into addiction, or retail therapy at some point, though no bank breaking!
PS. Shoes are from Merci, concept store in Paris, that’s when truck nearly ran as over;) Also wearing my friend’s bracelet, JESSICA BARENSFELD, reminds me of knitted golden Missoni from 70s, she’s very talented!

Merci pour ce billet, Garance. Je peux enfin me sentir moins seule. Un jour, j’ai, en effet, posté un commentaire sur un blog de mode où il était question de la robe en dentelle blanche Dolce e Gabbana que portait Diane Kruger sous une veste militaire. J’avais émis l’avis que la silhouette était ratée à cause d’une mauvaise équation. Mais certaines commentatrices avaient constesté mon approche mathématique de la question.
Et pourtant, on a bien tort de sous-estimer l’arithmétique fashion.
Je trouve très pertinent le raisonnement (et oui, se vêtir quotidiennement réclame beaucoup de réflexion ! Le style, ce n’est pas à prendre avec désinvolture) old + new. Et je vais d’ailleurs m’en inspirer.
Neuf + neuf = manque de personnalité et de créativité
Vintage + vintage = fille un peu bizarre et fauchée
Mais neuf + vintage = fille avec un sens inné du style et un goût sûr, qui jongle avec les tendances et sait reconnaître les pièces intemporelles.
En ce qui concernait le cas Diane Kruger, ma théorie était la suivante : son look associait une robe du soir (vêtement à la fois féminin et sophistiqué) à un treillis (vêtement masculin et déconstracté). Cela ne pouvait fonctionner, car tous les paramètres étaient antinomiques. Or, à mon sens, lorsque l’on combine au moins trois paramètres, il en faut au moins deux identiques. C’est comme avec les couleurs.
Donc, la bonne équation aurait été :
robe du soir (féminin et sophistiqué) + blazer (masculin et sophistiqué)
ou bien :
petite robe en coton (féminin et décontracté) + teillis (masculin et décontracté).
Je suis sûre que ce modèle d’équation est juste !
D’ailleurs, la siilhouette de Zuzanna le prouve : elle joue sur le contraste sporty vs. ladylike, mais toujours sur le thème monochrome noir&blanc. Un troisième élément, comme de la couleur, viendrait casser l’haromonie, je pense.
Ca serait amusant d’analyser les silhouettes présentées sur ton blog selon des modèles arithmétiques.
J’adore moi aussi les maths de la mode, et j’espère que tu en reparleras.
