The Jeans

11 years ago by

Alex showed me these jeans the other day and my first reaction was that I just loved them!!!
I’ve also seen these in a lot of magazines – patched jeans are everywhere !

But then I wondered, would jeans like this cut your legs in two? Like, as soon as you put them on, would you be 5 inches shorter?

What followed was a long conversation about leg length and patched jeans… We decided we had to talk to you about it.

What do you all think?

PS: You can get these jeans by MiH here.

  • these jeans look unexpectedly cool :)

  • I. absolutely. love. these. jeans. (one word for each photo)

  • mmm…. bof.

  • Soooo cute! I sort of wish the slimming darker part was on my thighs, but oh well ;).

  • I love it, this jeans can change a simple outfit and give more interesting look…

  • I love these jeans but I couldn’t wear them – I have short little Bono legs.

  • While fitting in a size 2 dresses 26/27 in jeans I have a very curvy body type and thick legs and on top of that I’m 5’4 so I cannot wear jeans like these. Like you said they will cut off my legs I can only get away with them if I wear 5 inch heels. But they are very cute indeed.

  • Hey!

These jeans ar awesome, in my head they are going with classic black jacket, blue silk blouse and with black sneakers!

So casual, stylish and chic at the same time!

  • Love the cut (love MiH en général). Hate the patch thing, it looks silly/odd/gimmicky to me. As if they didn’t know what else to invent, and they came up with that… And I don’t think it looks particularly flattering (that’s my polite way of saying that girls under 5’8″ and over 130 lbs should stay away from that).

  • Yes, absolutely, these jeans would cut your legs in two. Maybe if you are a tall and lanky model you don’t mind, but on mere mortals, I just can’t imagine these being a good idea. Could we at least have the darker part on top to be a bit more slimming the thighs? Even then… I don’t know… I’d pass. But then my legs are extremely, ahem, athletic, so I don’t think I’m the target consumer for these particular jeans to say the least.

  • honestly, sorry girls, I do not like them. This jeans look too self-made for me. I hope you forgive me ;-))

  • Really like these jeans!!!
i don’t think they look like cutting the leg, at least in the picture.
i think it’s great to have more patchwork jeans wearable options, for a change to plain jeans, as it makes otufits look wholly more thought-through.
Genius option on a daily basis. I vote yes!!!

D’ailleurs…

  • yes yes yes cut cut cut…it’s where your eye goes..

    http://www.laurablogmode.com

  • I love them! they’re so original!

  • Well, I don’t think it shortens the legs. I just think that patched jeans can’t be worn by girls with fat legs (like me). It draws attention to this part of the body, which we try to hide.

  • you know, my first thought is: so cool! but then, yeah…they do seem to cut the legs in half and make the wearer look shorter. i still like them, though, but wouldn’t wear them myself. :)

  • Two tone jeans like this might really shorten the legs, but there are other patched jeans where the patches are over the knees or above or both, there is actually quite a cool version from Zara! I find that when the jeans are just patched over the knees or similar they don’t shorten the legs. xxx

  • I am 5’3″, but I would rock these. They wouldn’t be my go-to jeans when I’m having a “fat day” (haha), and I would probably have to get them tailored (like everything else I purchase that isn’t already ankle-cut). Otherwise, they’re very cute, and I don’t think the color block would make me look THAT much shorter. I must agree with a previous comment and say that they might look better paired with a heel on someone who is short.

    A bientôt,
    Nathalie

    http://modeskinen.blogspot.com

  • Love em! Buuut I think you have to have LONGGG legs to make them work. Short legs would be trunkated!

  • I think that if you really want to put it to the test, you need to see what the jeans look like on someone say 5’3″. Beautiful long legs can wear anything. But short legs??? That’s wear things get tricky

  • They look really good on the size 0000000 model but I don’t think they’d work for everyone. I know I’d be vertically impeded in three seconds. Here’s to dreamin’ of long legs. *LeSigh

Trop pinterest, trop dyi, trop j’ai-le-goût-d’être-différente.

  • I think it might be better to have the darker denim on the thigh area, as it would make the thighs look a little slimmer (for ladies who have that…cough*me*cough). However, I think the look is very relaxed but unique. I like. :D

    http://www.mode9.fr

  • C’est original! Bien porté, cela peut être sympa!

  • The thing I love about these jeans is the interest they create: you can’t just glance, your eye is drawn back again and again with the questions. Ultimately for me though the answer is similar to others, I wish they had put the darker colour on top….oh, but then they would look like the ombré Rag and Bone….hmmm. Must say the length is parfait!

  • Yes, I would wear them. They would be fun to wear for the weekend.

  • jeez, haven’t commented for 3 years here….
but, have you ever heard of horizontal mapping?
and why stripy things don’t really make you fatter, if the stripe is of the right width, the result is quite the opposite. the trick is in the placing, or, where they are cut. if they don’t cut through the widest part or your leg, but through the thinner ones (note the visible ankle, definitely the thinnest part of the leg), they can actually make you look thinner.
same with putting the darker shade on the bottom, the place that is normally in shade due to perspective (talking about normal situations, no funny stuff). that also contributes to the effect that your legs are aaaall up to there, to the ground.
    all clear now?

from the side they are tres chic and almost elongating. but from the front, leg shortening/widening. tough call but so fun!

J’aime.

  • I say fine if you are a size 0. Me, not so much. At 5’3 and curvy, the faded jean is more fatal than a white jean, and I believe if you are not at least 5’6, you run the risk of being chopped off at the knee.

  • No, these wouldn’t work for my little leg stumps.

  • well of course they look great on the toothpick in the photos! ;-)

  • lili tebaldi February, 4 2013, 11:27 / Reply

    bof !

  • On dirait que le jean est trempe!

  • I love them! What an interesting idea !!!!
And the pictures are awesome!!! Love this post! You’re great!
    http://www.cecilleblog.blogspot.com

  • That jeans looks great. I really like that color. Nice day.

  • Tizzylish February, 4 2013, 11:50 / Reply

They are a bit on the tacky side…not for me…

  • Those jeans would look great on someone tall and lean, like, maybe…hmmm…. a model? Or at least someone skinny. But being 5’4″ and having a healthy weight I wouldn’t dare put on jeans like these.

  • Ce jean est juste ouf !! J’adore :)

    xx.

  • Hmm, I can’t call this. I think they look good in the picture, but personally speaking, I wear jeans to show off my assets…I don’t know too many people who want to draw attention to their knees. Then again, if you *want* to divert attention away from problem areas, this could work, but if your legs are short then it could backfire on you. This is the most flip floppiest post I’ve ever made!

  • Love these jeans

  • Euh ?

  • Ha ha hah! Completely!

I loved your comment (sorry, mon francais est terrible!).
I am soooo surprised so many of us like these jeans!
It really screams to me ‘what gadget can I invent today?’
Very 80’s philosophy (the gadget decade!) very useless, very unflattering, very very UGLY!

  • If only I had legs like that, I wouldn’t care whether they looked short…

  • These are the kind of jeans you love to wear until you see a picture of yourself wearing them and realise you look half your regular size.

Still probably would wear them though..!

  • endless summer February, 4 2013, 1:50

I totally agree! I would try them on and make a shopping buddy take a pic of me in them to make sure I wasn’t making a vertical purchasing error!

  • Maybe this can inspire another DIY post. How to patch jeans in a lengthening (and slimming!) manner. Long patches on the outside or inside thigh? Faded blue on (your favourites) white jeans?!

  • I looove these jeans exactly as they are worn in the picture! And exactly on people that size!

  • mimi aka cigalechanta February, 4 2013, 1:20 / Reply

Ther first time I saw these jeans, I thought, no way. At 5ft 2 andhalf inches, I’d look
    like Toulouse Lautrec :)

  • I think the fact that these are ankle length makes up for the leg-in-half-cutting! Those bare ankles make for some extra long legs :-)

    <3

    Xx
    http://Lauralexo.blogspot;com

  • I love them! But I also love those white sneakers! Where are they from?

  • These remind me of something I tried back in the 70’s when I was a kid! Love them…

  • Carole b February, 4 2013, 1:55 / Reply

  • I don’t know what to make of this jeans, but I kept on playing with the arrows, just to make the girl move like an animation…

  • they look great on those legs [whose legs are they?]. but what about the white sneakers??? tell us more about the shoes!

  • i think it’s a bit like boots over skinny jeans, if it works it works, if it doesn’t it does make you look chopped off and shorten your leg line. color and seam placement would make a difference for sure! i love it on the model in the pics, very cute with her white trainers ;)

  • 2 jeans en 1, l’idée est bonne !!

    http://lanoura.blogspot.fr

  • Please give sneaker details! Thanks.

  • Trop beauuuu!!

C joli sinon

  • Yes they would make anyone look shorter x

  • OK, I totally didn’t think I’d like them, but I LOOOOVE them!!! Yeah, I guess they would make my legs look shorter but I’m pretty tall so that’s OK… I just love the whole patched look. :) So cool! x

  • It’s funny how I really love the profile phots, but then when I saw them up-front, I found them quite unflattering, so I’m in doubt…

  • They’re weird, odd, funny….but I think I love them!

  • Love them… but not for me… Want them… but they would make my legs look shorter…:(
They are very cute though… xv

  • I can’t decide if I like them or not. I like them from the side but when they are shown from the front I feel like they don’t look as good. Her legs still look very long though!

    http://www.deancorno.blogspot.com

  • Ok……if you’re 5″10″ plus maybe you can wear these jeans but the average woman ot there…a definite noooo!

  • on an unrelated note – i really enjoyed clicking on the pictures backwards :)

  • I’m 5’11” and wear inseam 34/35 and I still wouldn’t wear anything that makes my legs look shorter, including ankle length jeans.

  • Ai-Ch'ng February, 4 2013, 7:59 / Reply

They look great on the girl in the shot – slightly cropped to show her ankle, and paired with those simple, clean, white shoes.

I’m just 165cm tall – not super-thin like the above model – and I love to wear my patched jeans. Our shape is what it is – you can’t really hide it/shorten it/slim it/lengthen it/widen it, and it’s OK to be who we are and wear what we like, if we love something.

I would, however, agree that wearing patched jeans looks most flattering when we wear them exposing the ankle, with a streamlined shoe – either like the demure sneakers above, or with a fresh, white, perforated Church’s Burwood brogue, and a simple T-shirt or singlet.

It’s not about how tall we are – it’s about the proportions of the jean (where it falls on the leg/how fitted or loose they are on the leg) and its patches (where do they fall? Lower suits some, while higher and random suits others), to our height and body-shape.

Last month, I fell in love and bought two (yes -two – I loved them so much) patched pairs from Zara in a size larger, to wear loose and cuffed high with my white perforated brogues or slim, grey ankle boots and over-sized indigo tie-dye racer-back singlet… I don’t think the patched jeans make me look taller, but they are so comfortable and I feel so happy in them.

  • I’m not really digging the 2-tone jeans. Maybe there are other patched jeans I’d like more but it Looks like beach-only wear to me — however, I
LOVE how they spark conversation and opinion. That’s a great post! So much fun to read!

  • Really like, bug would not use it… I think only super tall models would pull it of :)

  • hmm…they loook cute in the pictures but just can’t see myself wearing them. maybe i need more convincing…and i rarely wear jeans anyway. :P

    http://newbornfanatic.wordpress.com/

  • I think you’re right Garancé, especially since the upper half is lighter than the bottom half. If your upper and lower legs aren’t the same size, then it’s going to majorly draw attention to the upper half! They’re beautiful though, I think a patchwork jean can be slimming if the darker portion is on top…

    Isa

  • love these pictures done in a sequence…. kind of like a go at your own pace gif… really makes it come alive!!! I like the pants.. yes she has skinny cute long legs.. I do not know how they would look on a pair of shorter gams.. hmm.. and I thought at first they were dip dyed.. that would be a cool idea too…

  • These jeans and the white shoes = brilliant!

  • I like them, with the right style they can be cool, but I think that a big miss is round the corner!

wow. i absolutely love those jeans!
Great idea! Think i`m gonna buy two pairs and and make two different kind of jeans – the one with light top and with the dark one! Let`s see how this would work out ;D

  • The length is great, love the cropped jeans, but good point about the 5 inches shorter… i’m 5.8 and still i would have to take a long look at the cabin door mirror to figure out if i could pull that off :))

    Bisous!

Beautiful from the side… makes you look shorter full frontal. Poop…

  • I love this jeans! would definitely buy one if I am leggy…

lets not forget the bangin bod of this person compared to say me..

  • itadivine February, 8 2013, 5:53 / Reply

I love the CONCEPT, but I think what would be WAY cooler, would be the same style in black and white denim (white on the bottom) or EVEN BETTER in a dark denim/black denim combo(THOSE i would rock the f*ck out of..).. In this pair, the light 80s wash on top and the darker down below seems harder for normal women to wear.. MiH! make me dark denim/black colorblocked jeans! ok thanks.

  • Forget about the jeans. WHAT SNEAKERS ARE THESE!!!!!!??????

  • I would have to agree. These jeans would probably make your legs appear shorter (or maybe even bigger) such would not work for everyone.

  • I really like the sneakers the model is wearing. Can someone tell me which brand they are/where I can get them?

  • I really love these jeans. I can’t believe i like them!

  • Oh please please tell us where those perfect sneakers are from! PLEASE!

  • It’s wonderful

  • Yuk. The low rise makes it even worse. They look pretty unattractive on whoever is wearing thm. Maybe on a very, very leggy woman. If the rise were not so low, perhaps it could even out.

  • And while burlesque often does involve some clothing
removal, in most shows this is simply a tease. This new youth market was reflected in the name ‘jean’ being formally adopted by Levi’s in the 60s, as jeans flooded Europe and Asian markets, and
became a symbol of youth, ideas, individuality and leisure.
