J’ai eu les même pour Noël, (mais des Manfield, question de budget ;-) et je les aime aussi ! d’amour même ! elles ont la forme et la couleur idéales, celles qui vont avec tout. Elles sont masculin/féminin, et c’est pour ça que je les kiffe tant !

Très jolies mais pas pour moi, j’ai du mal à aimer une chaussure qui n’a pas au minimum 8cm de talon. Mes préférées? Des sandales à plateformes et talon de 12, achetées et portées par ma mamy dans les années 50. Je les mettais chez elle qd j’étais petite en rêvant au jour où elles seraient à ma taille pui je lui ai empruntées pour une soirée disco il y a 10ans… sans jamais les rendre en retour.
@Frida: je trouve votre commentaire so infondé; c’est le constat affligeant que j’ai fait à propos de tellement de blogs et justement celui-ci est celui que je continue de suivre assidument car il prend l’exact contre-pied de ce courant!
Acne Pistols are my go-to everyday boot. I like a small heel on me, and I can still walk for as long as I want. I wear Church’s penny loafers often too.

Garance: It is not only todays post. The product placement and others marketing tools are used in almost every post. You can talk about fashion without brands if you talk about style – the composition, colors, proportions. You can show your favorite shoes but you don’t have mention the name of the brand but …. it will not be so profitable. In some way I understand your reasons but I am also tired that there is no marketing-free cyber/public space.
Garance, They look so comfortable and cozy, like old friends. My favorites are a chelsea boot by Johnston and Murphy called Lyla. They feel like slippers and the leather is burnished for extra charm ;) I’m a horsey girl and they remind me of my old field boots!

Garance: I agree with you. This is a fashion blog so obviously many brand names will come up throughout the post. Posting this pair of shoes without the “artist’s” name would just create a million questions as to where they come from and “who made them”. So long as the items you feature are uniquely your preferences (which I feel they are) then you are absolutely right. :)
Frida: I also feel for you. I understand that many blogs are becoming more and more about promoting a brand. Unfortunately blogging is something that is constantly evolving into a contemporary business option. Which is a good thing for some who have made it their career to promote items they love and earn money while doing so. I hope that some of your favorite blogs continue to be “true” to what it is you love about them.

I hate brands too, really. Mainly because I am middle class lady with upper class taste. I prefer style and hate to look like I am stuck in Barbie ‘s world. But something gets to me and I crave a great purse. But I too hate brands. So, I settle for a budget friendly bag and snuff the rest!
I love summer, do not get me wrong, but when the weather starts to dip I get out my boots, LOVE wearing boots. Even heels are easier to wear in boots. My fav is a tall-over-the-knee boot, wearing my Kors riding boots with big beautiful zipper and half leather half stretch, making my legs look looooong.

Those shoes! I also love my Prada loafers from when before Prada was discovered by TV characters, and my lovely cashmere bed socks, which make me pity those shuffling around in fleece lined slippers.
My very favourite are my English boots as well! Having said that, I am not saying this to tag along with you, Garance. I got this pair in 2004, on the sale. They are knee length, dark brown, extremely comfortable, sawn on a side with nice details and have the most charming leather laces on both sides too.
I think there are basic characteristics that make the difference when you talk about something classic and they are:
1. Good finish (and the British are worldwide recognized for that)
2. Materials of good quality
3. Beautiful design
Although I moved from England that year and I have shopped in various other countries, those boots (and other shoes as well as clothes I got there) remain my classic endless choices.
Des ballerines repetto et une paire d’escarpins Tod’s me suivent depuis 2/3 ans, increvables .. le reste tourne assez rapidement et les boots ne font généralement qu’une seule saison !
frida : I understand where your concerns come from – but unlike you I am not opposed to talking about brands – even more so when it’s a beautiful and very discreet brand as Churchs – brands are part of our life and so they are part of Internet.
If you want to do a fashion blog totally free of brands I would love to check it. Even though, as Lucero says, I would be the first one to ask you : “where does those shoes come from ?”
I love shoes so much. I am so attached to all of them, each one seems to have a personality. My favorite are a pair of Ariat riding boots that I was given for free in 8th grade. I used them while I rode horses, but I also began wearing them outside of the stables. Now that I don’t ride, I still have those lovely boots to wear. They are the perfect concert shoe.

My go-to boot is a biker boot from Gap from two years ago (I know, I know, Gap – not very exciting) which I bought just before I moved to Paris. I walked all over the city in them (literally, I would be out walking for hours every day) and they were SO cute and comfortable that when I went back to London a month later, I went to every damn Gap in town until I found them again…and bought two more pairs. The first pair is nearly dead now, but I’m soooooo happy that I have duplicates because I still wear them almost every day. The perfect boot= bliss…
Enfin je découvre la marque de tes bottines… Si je ne me trompe pas j’ai dû voir quelque part une photo de toi avec ces chaussures que j’ai tout de suite aimé (Sartorialist ?). Sur toi elles me transmettent la même chose que tes photos/vidéo pour Petit Bateau: c’est comme ci c’était vraiment toi… même si ces “vraiment nous” peuvent avoir différentes variables, il y a tout un fois un parfum de vérité-honnêteté qui prend le dessus et rend beau. J’ai la petite théorie que certaine personnes ne devraient porter que de l’atemporelle: c’est le marc parfait d’un esprit et d’un caractère bien marqué, coloré. Question d’équilibre…

Frida: I do understand your point, yes there are other blogs and they are certainly annoying. However, I do not think this might be the case. Plus, through acceptance, we can live happier, maybe? :)
If you had a label, wouldn’t you want that the stuff you create be recognised by its name?
I think that false modesty days are gone and we need to call things by their name.
A brand was born as a product of creativity _at some point_ right? The fact that it turns into a worldwide brand does not take any less credit of the creative work, except that it becomes successful, hence sometimes you cannot actually feel the “human touch”.
So, here, I do creative stuff as well, but I would not want my photos/paintings to go around the world unnamed because they do have identity, you know? And it is not bragging, it is just a matter of addressing/calling things as they are :).

Je les porte non-stop en hiver, elles ont même passé la nuit sous la pluie sur mon balcon (ce genre de choses arrive quand on est tête en l’air) et elles sont ressorties intactes. J’ai des tonnes de chaussures, des vraiments hautes, recherchées, de marque ou non… pourtant ce sont elles, les boots pas franchement glamour mais qui vont avec tout que je choisis!

Moi ce sont des boots Cosmoparis couleur cognac que mon homme m’a offerte à mon anniversaire en décembre dernier. Elles sont à talons (8 cm : hauteur idéale!) et je dois les mettre 4 jours sur 7 tellement je les trouve parfaites!
J’aime beaucoup tes Church’s. Mais moi le plat, mes petites jambes me le rendent pas trop bien…

wow… If I had to chose only one pair from my shoe collection I’d say whichever of my Ash ballerinas (after many time looking for the perfect ballerina I found those and now I can’t help but buying just Ash ones…). But I gotta admit that I just can’t chose only one pair… also my Pura Lopez high heeled sandals, my Chie Mihara boots, my Chucks (Converse are so versatile, aren’t they?).

Frye Harness boots! Quality clothing, shoes, accessories, etc. usually have a brand name attached. Ever knock-offs have a brand! Plus, if anyone were to adore these boots you’ve posted a photo of, they would need to know who made them in order to acquire their own pair.
What lovely ankle boots! My favorite boots, or just shoes in general and that I wear with everything, are my Fiorentini + Baker mid-calf black leather boots. Three buckled straps, and bad-ass looking!

Les sandales à semelles de bois qu’on trouve chez K.A., boulevard Saint-Germain. Elles n’existent qu’en deux couleurs (naturel et marron foncé), mais la teinture pour cuir, c’est pas pour les chiens. Donc je les ai aussi en rouge, kaki, et bleu. Chaque année ou presque, je leur offre une petite soeur.
Le problème, c’est la valise au moment de partir en vacances : quelle(s) paire(s) dois-je abandonner ?

J’aime beaucoup mes bottines en suède noir Clarks, modèle Yarra Desert. Tout le confort des Clarks, même avec un talon plateforme. Je les ai eues dans les pieds tout l’automne avec mes boyfriend jeans!

Malheureusement pas de talons, j’ai besoin d’être à l’aise!
J’oscille entre une paire de bottes cavalières tan faites sur mesure pour ma mère dans les années 70 (un luxe, mais ça fait 7 ans que je les porte sans arrêt et elles sont toujours aussi belles, sans parler du fait que ma mère les avait portées avant moi!) et une paire de bottines vintage lacées, noir et brun, type victorien, ajourées avec des glands au bout des lacets (et réparées 5 fois chez le cordonnier, tellement je les porte!).
Je trouve la discussion à propos des marques intéressante. J’ai l’impression que pour éviter qu’elles entrent en jeu, il faudrait présenter des items vintage aux marques oubliées, puisque beaucoup de pièces sont facilement retraceables de nos jours, ou de présenter des vêtements faits maison, mais là tout le monde voudrait le patron ou l’origine du tissu utilisé, ou savoir si la personne compte vendre ses créations… On s’en sort difficilement.
Moi, de ce post (où tu présentes ma paire de chaussures idéale pré-post et post-post (haha) mais inatteignable, Garance!) je ressors qu’il est important d’investir dans des chaussures de qualité si on les portes très souvent, mais aussi, qu’avec un peu de persévérance et de discernement, il est possible de trouver des items semblables à notre prix si l’on cherche un peu–ou beaucoup.

Speaking of boots, every year I set out to buy the perfect pair of knee-length boots for winter, but for many reasons, including, I’m not very tall and the boots are often too long, I fail miserably. I think I’ll go out looking for ankle boots now…
I am always glad to get good tips on cute AND comfortable shoes. They are hard to find. I am still searching for the perfect shoe.
In this case, I wanted the brand to be mentioned. However, I do often feel overwhelmed by advertising on the Internet and TV. And since people aren’t watching/reading ads anymore, they are often encorporated into the primary material. It can seem authentic (like this post), but it often makes the material seem like an advertisement. It is a fine balance.

I appreciate your blog. I have been following it since the very beginning. One of the many things that make me come back is the witty writing skills, but what I like the most is that, unlike many other bloggers, Garance keeps her target audience in mind.
Many among us are interested in the brand, not necessarily to purchase any products, but also because a lot of fashion followers like to see the paths a specific brand choose to follow this season. Now, when you have a nice brand such as Church’s Garance does not even have to show an item from this season, but many ago.
When writing your comment you made a choice not to like this specific blog. That is okay, because just like fashion that is a matter of taste, but choosing to share your negativity with other people who actually enjoy reading Dore’s blog feels like a waste of time. I agree with Clémence, and don’t really understand the reason to post a such negative comment.. I always found this blog delicate and true, sometimes it shares very personal feelings, and made me discover a lot of amazing things. Brands are part of this universe, there’s nothing wrong with it.

The boots i’m loving right now are chocolate FIT FLOP breathable booties with double-faced deluxe sheepskin – built for comfort & the best thing is you don’t even need to wear socks with them! They look similar to UGGS but better because they’re ergonomically correct for your feet. You can walk forever.
That said, my favorite pair of shoes are still sexy high heels.

Mes chaussures préférées, ce sont des vieilles Santiags que j’ai achetées au Texas il y a des années. Increvables, et toujours au top avec n’importe quelle fringue !

I found a pair of paddock style boots like the ones you have above about 5 years ago and they only came in men’s sizes and I tried to fit in the smallest man’s size to no avail. Now, voilá! They make them for women…oh the tireless world.
HouseShoes (knitted by my grandma) are my all time favorite. They keep me warm and my squeezed tippy-toes can recover from a day in the high heels.
The leather boots are lovely. Nice golden detail. Anyway …who needs a uniform? You can wear these shoes naked!

Garance (je te tutoies, ok?), juste un petit mot pour te dire combien j’apprécie la probité et la patience que tu mets pour répondre aux commentaires parfois négatifs qui peuvent être laissés sur le fil. Ce n’est pas le cas de toutes les blogueuses, et je trouve que c’est (en partie) ce qui fait à la fois la classe et la chaleur de ton blog: un espace de discussion où l’animosité, lorsqu’il y en a, est tout de suite neutralisée par ta gentillesse et ton honnêteté.
Bon, pardon pour ce commentaire qui flaire le cirage de bottes (bottes qui sont fort jolies d’ailleurs!), mais c’est un élément tellement appréciable de ton blog que je me suis permis de le souligner et de t’en remercier.
En ce moment, mes bottes Anniel, confortables comme des pantoufles… J’ai juste envie de confort, tellement envie!

Je pense sincèrement que je ne pourrais me passer une jolie paire d’escarpins. C’est la paire qui définit le mieux ma personnalité.
J’aime beaucoup ton travail.
Il y a aussi les tennis B., les basses avec élastique. Dans tous les coloris. J’en ai eu jusqu’à neuf (paires).
Mais je ne les aime qu’une fois passées en machine et séchées au soleil (ou à la lune). C’est alors que la couleur devient vraiment intéressante, même le bleu marine.
I noticed you wearing these in Scott’s series on women photographers. I love having one pair of go-to shoes. In spring and fall its a pair of ballet flats, this past summer it was a pair of Cordani sandals and a pair of Tom’s (sorry Garance I know you “hate” those), but this winter, I’m rotating between three pairs of boots.
It doesn’t look like that particular style of Church’s is still available. And, alas, as a mostly unemployed writer (but far from unemployable!) they are beyond my current price point anyway.
But I love these and love the idea that even with the variety in your closet, you play favorites and help teach folks like me about “the classics!”

It will be a pair of Converse. Even though you have to get a new pair every 2 years or so, I have been wearing Converse since I’m 14 and it is still a most in my wardrobe. …and it totally reflects the Parisian style too ;)
BTW, I disagree with Friday, what I like about your blog is that it has a clean and modern layout, it’s stylished, easy to browse, without annoying and ugly commercial floating around… and after all we live in democracy, it’s your blog and you can do what you want, and people are free to check it out or not. and also I love your posts, super down to earth and funny…

Frida, should Style.com not report what brand the show is that we are looking at during fashion week? Should we not call a model by her name in a magazine interview? Tell me that Elle, Naomi and Claudia are not brands in their own right? As if you can’t call an item by it’s brand name… You’re being over sensitive.
C’est drôle que tu montres celles-là, ce sont les chaussures de ma mère, invariablement depuis des années. Effectivement, elle a toujours l’air parfaite avec. Si j’étais moi histoire de dire “j’ai du caractère moi, je me démarque”, je choisirai un modèle chez eux, avec un empiècement toilé qui monte sur la cheville. Quand je serais riche. )
Si j’avais ces bottines ce seraient mes préférées. pour l’instant ce sont mes bottine Fiorentini and Baker achetées chez Barney’s Coop il y a quelques années. Intemporelles (ils font encore le modèle, et quel cuir!), increvables (j’espère), rock n roll.

Aaaah, les chaussures italiennes restent pour moi les plus belles…
Mais depuis que je vis en Espagne, j’ai découvert une marque qui s’appelle Hakei (elle existe d’ailleurs à Paris maintenant au BHV) Il y a des chaussures vraiment sympas, à un prix abordable. Et leur cuir est magnifique…
Superbes! Le cuir à l’air de bonne qualité, j’vais voir s’ils en proposent pour homme, et je risque bien de dilapider l’héritage familial chez eux.
Mes chaussures préférées c’est le modèle Oliver de chez Minelli. D’une j’aime bien leur petit nom, du coup elles ont une entité à part entière (c’est limite si je converse pas avec elles) et de deux: elles deviennent de plus en plus belles au fur et à mesure qu’elles vieillissent. Un peu comme Demi Moore quoi (ou Jane Fonda).

I have a pair almost identical and in the same elbamatt tan from Folk in London, which my boyfriend gave me for my 30th. I adore them – although they got ravaged in the rain recently :( and are in need of a polish!!!
Church’s are on my wish list too, I was always a regular visitor to their Regent Street store when I lived in London.
My other favourites are my Rupert Sanderson Saddle Oxfords though I am always too afraid to wear them and wreck them.

Et pour en revenir à la réflexion de Frida qui est tout à fait légitime quand on parle de “mode”, je la comprends mais cependant on oublie souvent que derrière une marque, il y a un véritable savoir-faire, de la création, du talent, plein de métiers et de personnes, de “petites mains” talentueuses et parler de ces marques parle d’elles aussi. Une marque n’est pas uniquement un “attrape-consommateur”, c’est aussi l’image, l’histoire d’une entreprise et des personnes qui la font vivre.

I love Arche ankle boots, they’re so comfortable and they come in wonderful colours and soft leathers. I’m surprised none of your readers appear to have mentioned them because they are French. I buy Arche boots or sandals everytime I visit Paris. Perhaps your readers think they’re a bit old lady? I guess that doesn’t really matter for me, because I am a bit of an old lady myself. I also love the Italian Geox sneakers better than Converse. They come in great colours, are generally lighter to carry in a suitcase and the soles have tiny holes so your feet can breathe. Our long suffering feet don’t get hot and sweaty even if you’re wearing them in warm weather. I also buy them for my husband. Wonderful no longer having the dreadful socks to wash.

La recherche de chaussures parfaites est une grande préoccupation pour moi par après des années de petits escarpins achetés un peu partout, j’ai dû me rendre à l’évidence que même si je trouvais facile de marcher avec de hauts talons ( je pense marcher plus d’une heure par jour), mes pieds (orteils) étaient tout abîmés. Donc histoire de pouvoir avoir de jolis pieds en sandalettes l’été (et aussi pour ma santé bien sûr), j’ai tout repris à 0 et je remplace toutes mes anciennes paires petit à petit. Après avoir testé plusieurs marques connues pour leur confort, je pense avoir trouvé le bon compromis confort/style avec Camper (une paire bottines cuir lisse noir, une paire bottines cuir velours marron – toutes 2 fines et sobres pour aller aussi bien avec robes, jupes, pantalons – hauteur 3,5cm). Et bon, je sais que les hauts talons ça galbe la jambe, rehausse les fesses etc mais pour cela une solution imparable : le sport!

Frida: I would be sad if I didn’t get to know where the shoes were from! I disagree that the posts are all about branding. I also find plenty of inspirational blogs that only contain posts about people and style that not say anything about the brands they are wearing. You seem to be very aware of branding, it shouldn’t be a problem for you to “peel it off”.
I say always state the brand. When I see something I like I want to know where I can get them. If I cannot afford the brand, then I look for a similar style. When I have no idea where to start, I get frustrated.

Those are gorgeous! I love the craftsmanship of Church’s shoes and I’m awaiting the day when I can save up enough to buy a pair. For now though my black patent leather Ferragamo Varas are indispensable (through countless trips to the cobbler and long walks), even if sometimes they’re a bit uncomfortable, they’re just so perfect I can’t do without them!

i heart my fiorentini + baker short black suede eli boots. i planned to get the tall black leather eternity boots but kept holding off and when the suede was released i realized why. they are puuuurfect. and i bought the shearling lined minnetonkas from j crew based on your post because i had the same problem with the brand, that i loved the booties but the booties would flop. not into floppy booties! so thank you for your reviews of your own lovely apparel. it’s an amazing world now that we women (and men too, i love scott’s men’s recommendations and appropriate some for myself) can, although strangers, help each other out this way!

but i don’t think this blog is like that at all! i really do believe that garance maintains her own voice and writes about things she loves. and why not? it’s a personal style blog that just happens to be amazing that has garnered many followers!
we look to certain celebrities and influencers to draw inspiration, and i think it’s great to know where specific items are from (esp something as understated and perfect as these boots) to incorporate into our own style.
