Today, I want to republish – and to have it translated in english for the first time ! – that text I wrote in …2007, just before the big bun became my everyday classic !!! Kisses and have a wonderful Sunday!
I sometimes get the craziest fashion ideas that make their way into the deep back recesses of my virtual lookbook, full with platinum hair, florescent leggings, and Westons (actually, that’s been done). And sometimes, a little nugget from my sub-conscious fashion sense makes its way by accident into a drawing and reminds me of my crazy ideas of the past.
Sometimes all this makes its way into a party itself… Take for example our special Fuck Valentine’s Day party that we decided to rename (a little more modestly) It’s Complicated Party*. It’s a chic little affair** organized at the very chic Cé where the very chic Contessa gave me the chicest compliment saying “Wow, your hair looks so good when you let it down, Garance.” To which Jen thought it time to add, “Yeah, it looks way better than that protestant bun you always like to wear.”
Yep.
I’m not the type to get offended, especially when the remark comes from a girl who still hasn’t gotten any flowers in the mail from St. Valentine and it’s almost midnight… (though they did end up coming… I wouldn’t have been so harsh.)
But yeah, I thought I had to do something.
I didn’t let my hair grow out just so that people would call me a nun!
I let my hair grow out so I could have fun with it, let it down, twist it, mousse it (yeah, okay, not too much with the moussing), to do up-dos, to be like Carrie Bradshaw, you know? Except brunette and with no Manolos. Okay, maybe more like a poor-man’s Carrie Bradshaw.
So back to the sudden appearance of my crazy idea, and the incredibly sound argument that any woman with things to do on her agenda can’t spend her entire life with her hair down***.
I thought about doing a bun. Yeah, the one in the picture, up high. And then there’s this picture here. And the bun Carrie has. Or even the editorial in Elle #3236 that was just so awesome that I thought about tattooing it all over my body just in case…
I even did a terrible job scanning in the Elle for you!
The thing that I’m wondering though is whether or not you can even do this in real life?
Or am I swimming too deeply in the deep-end of some fashion pool to realize that a bun like that is just going to make me look like a post-nuclear apocalypse Medusa?
If that’s the case, I’m begging you, please tell me.

Feel free to stay that way and allow me to explain… on Facebook, you’re either single, in a relationship, married, it’s complicated, or in an open relationship which kind of seems like all of the above or something. I dunno.
** weirdly composed of almost all bloggers. I wonder if there is some relationship here between cause and effect? Do we maybe need to pry ourselves away from our screens and head out into the real world or something? The real world… a place with a million of nuanced options that lie between married and it’s complicated. Wait, everything isn’t just black and white?
*** Actually, I know tons of women who spend their entire life with their hair down, but sometimes you have to just let things be to keep the stream-of-consciousness spirit of the post. (If you didn’t understand anything I just said, don’t you worry one second, because I didn’t either.)

I love the post, and even back in 2007 I did not think that this kind of bun was crazy. I for one love it, and I must say that for the past two weeks that is all I have been doing to my hair, I guess I am trying to perfect the art of the perfect high but casual hair bun.

Yes, I do it all the time with a bun donut, or hair foundation (I think that’s the technical term). The best part is that it stays in all day long. If you have really long hair just loop it through the donut twice, wrap the rest of your ends around the bun and pin. I love the thing, but my dog thinks it’s a toy whenever I leave it around….

difficilement applicable…! mais moi je le trouve bien ton chignon habituel! et tu vois, je porte mes cheveux longs toujours lâchés, pas parce que je veux avoir l’air sexy, mais parce que je suis nulle en coiffure. je suis donc envieuse de celles capables de faire un simple chignon!

Leaving misogyny aside… I think that nowadays it is probably totally OK to do a bun a la Elle editorial (I mean, look at what Anna Dello Russo sports on her head!).
This is one of the things I miss terribly since I cut my hair short… variety! (And well, being able to hide my bad hair days…).

Ben moi, le chignon perché sur le haut de la tête, j’adore! Même si je sais que bcp vont trouver ça étrange…
Par contre, je n’oserais pas, je pense, me coiffer de cette manière pour aller au boulot. Mais bon, tout dépend du boulot aussi. Dans certains milieux, on peut se le permettre sans problème. Dans mon cas, … j’avoue.. je me sentirai mal à l’aise je crois…
I thought I would grow my hair long so I could wear it in a bun or a ponytail or something and when I had one of the “mean reds”* I just cut it off with a manicure scissors into a really short bob. It looks terrible right now but I FEEL MYSELF again. And from now on I am going to follow my heart and take advice only when I’ll want to.
* – it’s from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” one of the lines of Audry Hepburn.
Oh Garance! I’ve been thinking of a bun too, but with braids…you know, like Solange Knowles. Even went out to braid my hair yesterday in Paris…let’s just say “utter disaster”…hahaha. Still not discouraged though.

Ben moi, du même avis que Jennifer, j’adore. Je trouve ça plutôt tendance, un chignon coiffé/décoiffé, qui mise tout sur sa hauteur.
Au boulot, en week-end, où tu veux, je le trouve magnifique. Après, peut-être que mon avis n’est pas très objectif, puisque je m’affuble chaque matin d’un chignon haut (un peu moins haut que celui-ci tout de même) et d’un trait d’eye liner (deux, sinon ça le fait pas).

Je serais plutôt partante, il faudrait faire un essai.
Mais le côté chignon “décoiffé” casse l’effet trop classique et “prout prout” d’un chignon.
Moi je me lancerais bien mais il me manque de la longueur et de l’épaisseur de cheveux.

j’adore ce type de coiffures mais j’ai les cheveux trop épais alors je ne peux pas en faire snif !!!!! c’est tellement japonaise !
J’adore l’illustration, les couleurs sont fantastiques! Pour ce qui est du chignon, j’aime beaucoup le méduse-look, en plus, ça ajoute quelques centimètres quand on n’est pas trop grande! Mais sur les autres, étant moi-même l’une de ces filles non-normalement constituées, portant toujours mes cheveux lâchés, lol!! Mais c’est bon, j’ai l’habitude, je peux manger de la soupe sans avoir de longues mèches qui trempent dans le bol! (beurk)
Mais j’essaierai peut-être le chignon, la version relâchée avec quelques mèches qui tombent (forcément qu’il y aura des mèches qui tombent, trop nulle en coiffure pour faire un truc bien lisse qui ne tombe pas au premier coup de vent). D’ailleurs, je me suis toujours demandé comment faisaient certaines filles pour se faire un chignon sexy-cool en fixant le tout avec un simple crayon…

Il y a deux sujets : avez vous l’air d’une none avec vos cheveux attachés cm d’ahb et ce chignon est il portable ? Alors je dois dire qu’effectivement je vs vois sur les photos tj coiffée pareil ou avec un chapeau et que c’est un peu tristounet . En ce qui me concerne je trouve que les cheveux long c’est a traiter en accessoire,: il faut les changer en les coiffant , c’est ça le plus . Ce chignon je le trouve craquant essayez et vs verrez bien comment vs vs sentez dans le rue avec, et puis vos chapeaux ça vous vielli alors allez y amusez vs avec vos cheveux !

I am getting a haircut in two weeks! I will do this style for now, but having your hair up like that all day can give me a headache. I used to do buns all the time when I was actively involved with ballet.
There’s something going around the Internet like a virus called the “sock bun.” But remember, we may think they’re so chic and casual but buns are non-negotiable man-repellers. Just sayin’.

Ok, se chignon, je trouve qu’il est à double tranchant. Il peut faire classe et “boho”, mais il y a aussi un petit côté champignon qui me plaît pas énormément. Le truc qui le rend plus classe je trouve? Qu’il soit plus petit et un peu mieux rangé.
Ce chignon, est magnifique, même si difficile à reproduire et à porter. Enfin, j’ai tout de même hâte de voir le résultat sur notre Garance préférée.
Je pense que le chignon (je ne sais pas comment on dit “bun” en français) est très classique et ne vieillit jamais. À mon avis, le chignon ne te retire pas la féminité. En fait, il s’agit d’une altération de cette.

Je me reconnais un peu dans ce texte ! je n’aime pas lâcher mes cheveux, je suis la spécialiste du chignon ! d’abord parce que je me sent mieux comme ça , puis ça me va mieux je trouve. Mais je vois bien que ça chagrine les gens, les rares fois ou je lâche mes cheveux j’entend des réflexions du genre ” hoo mais en fait tu as de beaux cheveux toi ! ” ” tu devrais les lâcher plus souvent ” ou encore ” rien à voir avec ce que tu te fais d’habitude ( mes chignons )..
mais bon, je m’en fiche, je vais chercher des variantes pour les attacher autrement, ou plus joliment ! :)

Tout comme Maryse, je me reconnais également dans ce post. Dans la vraie vie, j’ai toujours les cheveux attachés. Quand je les lâche, c’est tout de suite panique à bord: ‘Mais qu’est ce que tu fais 0_0? Tu nous la joue femme ‘sexy’? Du coup, je me range tranquillement. Avec les années j’ai acquis une certaine maîtrise de l’art du chignon :-).
Mais je ne l’ai jamais essayé aussi haut perché sur le ciboulot. Peur de donner l’impression qu’un nid de cygnogne s’y serait installé. Finalement, à voir!
Juste pour faire un pied de nez à tous ceux qui me contraignent à porter le chignon, parce que ça m’irait mieux, j’ai posté une seule & unique photo de moi les cheveux lâchés sur mon blog, histoire de créer une autre moi, virtuelle…et à l’image de ce que j’aime.

J’habite actuellement en Ecosse et ce genre de chignon fait un tabac, énormément de filles se coiffent de cette manière et ça leur va plutôt bien ! Moi perso, je n’ai jamais testé mais pourquoi pas.

I have such thick, strong hair, that when I put it up I’d get bad headaches! I now have a funky ‘chin-length’ graduated bob which now seems to get a myriad of compliments. Putting this double-crowned nightmare mane up was painful … you’re lucky if you can ‘put it up’ … the alternative, for me, was like wearing a continual thick blanket!

Je fais un chignon à peu près 4 jours par semaine et à force, j’ai l’impression que je ne sais plus le faire, et puis je m’en lasse, mais bon c’est tellement pratique!! Demain j’essaierai de faire un mix des deux je pense :)

Well, I am a type of girl who has her hair down all the time, but then again I have to put mousse and dry it nicely so I could have volume and a a nice shape. But that’s just for when I have to see people (and they have to see me ) cause at home I almost all the time have bun :)

A bun up on top or side or nape is always super stylish. and besides it tends to aid that a little lift by the side of the face – not that we need it mind you! Down , up , braided, plaited, long hair means variety – vive la difference!

J’adore ce chignon! Malheureusement, à moins d’avoir des cheveux hypers épais, diffcile d’obtenir ce résultat. J’ai les cheveux longs et fins, du coup mon chignon a l’air d’une petite crotte!
La solution : j’utilise un boudin pour avoir un beau volume. Je vais bientôt mettre une video tutorielle sur mon blog ;)

Aujourd’hui mon boss déboule dans mon bureau et me dis: “J’adoooooore Metronomy! Tu sais surtout la chanson n°3?” #?….;#@?
Alors franchement là j’ai envie te dire que le chignon façon “Fukushima”, pourquoi pas ? On pourrait aussi l’appeler “Hiroshima” ou “essais nucléaires en Guyane” tellement ça coiffe en décoiffant.
Je dis qu’il faut oser!
Bon après, pour l’aspect technique je dirais (me concernant) que c’est pas gagné avec mes Ni-Ni (ou mes Mi-Mi). Je proposerais de commencer par le shampoing sec qu’on oublierait de brosser et puis ensuite on remonte le tout (d’ailleurs ça m’évoque des oeufs battus en neige, étrange?) et on plante des épingles à cheveux au hasard. Un coup de laque Helnett et le tour est joué!

Bah…le chignon ci-haut me fait penser a la fille starbucks: eternellement en yoga pants, avec un sac geant qui lui pend a l’avant-bras, des lunettes de soleil et le chignon un peu MPN.
Mais si tu n’essayes pas, tu ne sauras pas :)
J’ai la plupart du temps les cheveux détachés (après les avoir portés courts un long moment) mais quand je les attache c’est pour me faire exactement (bon… presque) ce chignon ! :)

i grow my hair long so i can tie it up without all these strings on hair around my face.it may be boring but its practical.i used to love ponytails but now my hair is so long it tickles my neck.very disturbing.so here im enjoying my boring self with a hair in bun and i dont care as it feels damn right.and even if i go to hairdresser (havent done for a while as my hairdresser thinks my hair shouldnt be so long) i can stand my hair down for few minutes and then its back to normal,back to bun.maybe we should try treating our hair bun like a red lipstick,signature.much more cooler.its all about attitude dont u think?big hug

I’ve been growing my hair for two years now just to be able to have it on a high bun. Now I have had it on that bun for a year and I’m holding my rehearsals of wearing it open, which is much trickier than I was ever able to imagine! When hair is open it gets in to all kinds of trouble. I eat it, I accidentally pull it with my bag, with my scarf, with my hand, with my jacket – you get the point. But the worst pulling happens when I’m dancing, (being a contemporary dancer I spent lots of my time rolling on the floor) so when I’m rolling around I’m usually rolling on my hair, if it is open. It’s painful!
So go BUN so you have FUN. or something silly like that.

Je me fais ce chignon quasiment tous les jours depuis quelques mois, j’utilise un “Donut”, je ne sais pas du tout me coiffer mais avec cette petite chose c’est très simple! Ça vaut le coup d’essayer..
