Since I chopped my hair, red lipstick has made a huge come back in my life. Now, not only do I want to buy a different shade everyday (I refrain, promise) (still carrying 4 different shades in my purse), I also would like to know how to apply it correctly. So, we asked the wonderful Alice Lane !
The Right Shade. It really depends on the girl. It depends on her confidence. One color might look a certain way on someone else and completely different on another person. I personally hate make up rules, I’ve never been down with that or listened to a word anyone says. You should go with how you feel, what you are wearing, what the weather is like outside.
Prepping your lips. You can exfoliate. Girls with a larger lips tend to have more skin that needs to be exfoliated. Put some lip balm on and let it soak in for a few minutes and then remove it because you need a clean surface. If you leave it on, your lipstick will go on unevenly.

Application. I use my finger. I barely use a lip brush. I use my finger because I can press the color into my lips, I can seal the edges. It doesn’t bother me if it goes over the edge a little bit because I’m just going to clean it up. It’s more natural to use your finger or apply it from the tube. Somebody back in the 20s did a good job and designed it like that for a reason. It fits your lips. The more your use it, it molds to the shape of your mouth.
[Editor’s note: Lipstick on your fingers? I reach for some Bioderma, it’s great because you can put a little on a cotton swab or soak an entire cotton pad. It removes everything! And don’t worry those of you not in France, it’s available online.]
Lip Liner. If you are going for really big impact, if you want really full lips, it will last a little bit longer if you do a liner.
I really like the NARS lip pencils because they do the whole thing, You can draw in the shape and fill it in and they feel really soft. I find that lip liners are so pointy and you have to make them really sharp so it feels quite dry going on your lips. If you have an uneven lip shape, which a lot of people do, it can be really unforgiving.
Blotting. I always use the back of my hand. I kiss the back of my hand. The skin is soft, it’s moist. Doing it with tissues makes it dry and takes off too much and you end up putting more back on and going in circles.
[Editor’s note: Reach for that Bioderma or a removing wipe if you are on the go to remove lipstick from the hand after blotting.]
Gloss. Put it in the center of your lip. Don’t smear it all over just drop it in the center and pat your lips together a little bit. But be aware, if you do a gloss, you’ll need to be checking on it so it doesn’t go all over your face.

Touch-ups. People tend to think you’re going to put that lipstick on and that’s it, but it does require maintenance. You need to check it and you need to reapply. I think there is nothing sexier than a girl reapplying her red lipstick in the street, it’s kind of amazing. When you have this gorgeous lipstick and its in your handbag, you want to take it out and put it on again.

well, from my point of view bold lipstick can change your day!
yes, especially when I am low in mood, I put little eyeliner, lots of mascara and a bright, bold lipstick. It just give you that wow factor, that confidence that would bright your day.
There are manu shades, so red can be wear even for very shy girls.

J’ai également coupé mes cheveux à la fin de l’été et depuis j’ai tendance aussi à mettre plus souvent du rouge à lèvres. Ca doit être le fait qu’on se retrouve avec une coupe courte plus masculine, on a envie de féminiser encore plus notre visage, et tant mieux ! Bisous à toi et à toute l’équipe !

I used to always use lip pencils to colour in and a balm over that to keep my lips soft, but these days I wear lipstick (faster to just swipe it on if I’m in a rush).

I try to wear red lipstick but I always end up taking it off! I think my lips are smooth so I put it on, then there’s just that bit of skin that’s secretly dry, so I have to take it all off!

J’aime le rouge. J’utilise actuellement Stila. Je le mets le matin et c’est parfait. Mais après le déjeuner/avoir mangé, ca bave de partout… comment eviter ce problème? J’ai tout essayé.. le poudre sur les lèvres, le crayon… mais ca bave toujours sur mes lèvres.. :-( Quelqu’un a du conseil ?
Red lips are key to feeling fabulous on a day when you might otherwise not. And yes, touch-ups are just a fact of life, but I find that if you use a more matte shade and skip the gloss it will last way longer. Nars Heat Wave is one of my favorites and it lasts pretty well. If you do want that glossier look, I’d say go for something like the YSL Glossy Stains, which are amazing and last for hours.

Le choix d’une couleur de rouge à lèvres est toujours très délicat ! J’adore certaines couleurs, mais pourtant avec mon teint clair et mes cheveux blonds j’évite d’en porter… ;-) Mais avec une coupe très courte je trouve que ça fait ressortir davantage le visage !

The RED lip colour in your photo for this story is truly devine. Blue reds/blood reds really are so much more flattering for most women (and they have a whitening “effect” for teeth, yellow reds and orange tones – the opposite). These are such great tips, I’m red lipstick lover as well.
I love red lips, but I prefer a matte finish. My fave at the moment is Rouge Coco in “Gabrielle. The description says it’s a bit shiny, but I like to apply it only on one lip and use my finger…it’s more natural, like alice says.
I’m gonna say it out loud: I LOVE ALICE LANE. Since I chopped my hair (it’s not your influence, Garance, really, I chopped them about a month ago, what a coincidence!) I started to pay more attention to my makeup. And Alice Lane’s videos on vogue.com – the one about highlights and the one about bold lips – taught me a lot and actually became a base of my daily routine.

Poste qui tombe à pic pour un remerciement. Etudiante, ma faculté est un défilé Maje/Sandro/The Kooples toute l’année. J’ai associé ces codes à “la mode” et j’ai vite été écoeuré par ces filles (mal) habillées par le gros salaire de papa. Ma réaction a été de prendre le contre sens en éliminant tout signe féminin (bijoux, maquillage, talons…).
Et j’ai commencé à te lire Garance. Tous les jours depuis deux ans maintenant. Cette semaine j’ai accepté une chose : la mode, celle qui rend les femmes belles et qui nous donne confiance, ne rime pas avec superficialité. Je peux être féminine sans être associée à quelqu’un de peu profond. MERCI ! (ton post sur Marine de Girolata a été le déclic).
Mais je bloque encore sur des choses simples comme.. mettre du rouge à lèvre en public. Est-ce le cas de certaines ?
Tout ça pour te dire qu’à mon sens ce blog va plus loin qu’une leçon de mode, et je trouve ça génial. Alors merci :)

J’ai complètement flashe sur cette photo. J’adore tout : la peau veloutée, les yeux accentues juste un peu, la bouche rouge et la queue de cheval savamment négligée… Ah la la, tu me rends nostalgique du temps ou je portais du rouge a lèvres super colore tous les jours !
I like to apply reds and other deep colored lipsticks with my finger, then use that little bit left on my fingertip as blusher. Not only is it a sure fire match, but it keeps me from looking too drained by the lip color (or too goth!) Even if I already have blusher on, this little trick wakes up my face. Lisa Eldridge has also done some excellent tutorials on red lips if you like more visuals and her yummy plummy voice.
I love a red lip as well and that is a great red because it has a blue tone. blue tones make your teeth look whiter and your skin brighter. I like to apply in layers to really seal in the color, blotting in between, and using a deeper red lip liner for the outer corners to give my lips dimension. I also lube the outside of the lips with concealer to make it stand out even more! lots of work but so worth it!

J’adore vraiment le rouge a lèvres, rien que le fait de s’en mettre, on se sent plus puissante quand on en porte, c’est un peu comme les talons !
Mais je ne sais pas si c’est moi qui fais une fixation, mais je trouve que le rouge à lèvres c’est toujours plus beau sur une belle peau ! Ca à tendance a faire ressortir les imperfections, les rougeurs notamment et autres boutons ! Et ça peut donner un air sale ! (je crois que j’ai quelques traumatismes ! ) Donc merci pour ces conseils ! :)

Sephora’s Cream Stick is AH-MA-ZIIIIIING! applies like lipgloss but dries like lipstick and stays put! always use it whenever I go out for a night on the town and I still have to use make-up remover to take it off.
