When I say I love having a morning routine, I really love having a morning routine. It’s the same everyday, it takes me the same amount of time (give or take how many times I snooze my alarm or if I get stuck in an Instagram black hole– thanks Kim) which is actually less time than I thought now that I’ve really timed it for this post…

So, I asked Garance about her routine (especially now that we aren’t in the apartment to bother her), Daphne and Caroline to fill us in on what they do each morning!

Caroline:
Wake up. Stumble out of bed, puffy eyes.

1 min: Splash cold water on face.

45 seconds: Use Cetaphil cleanser and try to rub the puffiness out of my skin while cleaning it!

45 seconds: Pat dry and use either Creme de La Mer cream, rubbed and warmed up between my palms, or Embryollise cream when I’m travelling and try to give myself a mini face massage pushing upwards and around the temples.

5 min: My no makeup makeup. Use Charlotte Tilbury’s concealer in #2 Fair under my eyes, around my nose and to touch up any dark spots. I’ve also grown addicted to using her Wonder Glow primer for a soft irridescence along my cheekbones. I’ll use a Laura Mercier Creme Eye Liner in a pot that I’ll put a cat eye flourish with her eye liner angled brush and it stays on all day/night. Will curl my eyelashes using my Shu Uemera curler, and then use the Charlotte Tilbury black mascara, which doesn’t run or clump and is my new mascara nirvana. Lipstick wise, I’ll either go with a deep red by Tom Ford, Shisheido or recently a fave from Kanebo, otherwise I’ll use Elizabeth Arden 8-Hour Cream on my lips to moisturize and give a hint of shine.

Then I use the Charlotte Tilbury black mascara, which doesn’t run or clump and is my new mascara nirvana.

10 min: My showers are usually 10 minutes long, very hot, and I use Original & Mineral Hydrate & Conquer Shampoo and Conditioner which has really helped to tamed my frizz – it’s expensive but worth it. I’ll use Coco Chanel Noir body wash, and once I’m out, Jergens moisturizer all over.

My hair is the trickiest – if I’m running late, it just goes in a bun with an attempt to tame my frizzies with Aveda High Gloss serum that smells delicious and reminds me of my teens. If I’ve showered, I’ll work through some serum in my wet hair, and tie it in a braid, finishing off with L’Oreal Wet Look Gel. It usually only stays put with wet look gel!

Total Time: 17 minutes, 30 seconds.

Daphne:
Pali always tells me that showering upon waking is the best way to wake up but I go straight from bed to the kitchen and make coffee!

5 min: I take quick showers in the morning and long baths at night. I wash my hair every other day in the shower with Pureology shampoo. I use Santa Maria Novella carnation soap as a body cleanser and wash my face with Joanna Vargas Vitamin C Wash. Towards the end of my shower I spray a little eucalyptus oil above my head…it opens up my sinuses and makes my bathroom smell like a spa.

I go straight from bed to the kitchen and make coffee!

7 min: I get out and apply Complex 15 body lotion all over (really fast it’s kind of comical) and I use Joanna Vargas Rejuvenating Serum on my face (I’m a Joanna Vargas devotee). Oh and I use Clarins roll-on deodorant!

8 min: Lastly, I blow dry my hair a little (without technique and upside down) and spray some perfume in it. If I remember I dab on Cle de Peau concealer and use Kevyn Aucoin mascara. Usually I have an outfit vision in the shower but some days I have to try on 50 things before going back to my first choice.

My whole morning routine takes about 20 minutes start to finish. Baths are another story.

Total Time: 20 Minutes

Alex:
10 mins: Shower. I shower everyday (I have to wash my hair. There are only about 2 days out of the year when the hair gods look down upon me and say, “Go forth Alex. Your hair won’t be greasy today.”). I wash my face in the shower with my Tata Harper cleanser to save a little bit of time. I use this bar of lavendar soap my mom got me at Columbus Ave. Flea Market and John Masters Organics Lavender Rosemary shampoo. I rarely use conditioner because I feel like it makes my hair greasy (maybe I’m doing it all wrong) but when I do it’s John Masters Organics also.

Go forth, Alex. Your hair won’t be greasy today.

3 mins: Brush my hair, spray in my Balmain Hair texturizing spray (it’s probably my fanciest feeling product and helps me in my never ending quest to achieve French girl hair), apply Tata Harper Floral Essence.

5 mins: Apply moisturizer (also Tata Harper) and Chantecaille SPF 50 primer. I’ll waste a few extra minutes checking Instagram/making a Nespresso while giving moisturizer a little bit of time to soak in.

7 mins: Apply NARS foundation (I’ve been hooked on it since our foundation debate), MAC Studio Finish Concealer, Tarte blush, Benefit Brow Zing and mascara (currently testing: Ellis Faas.)

3 mins: My hair is just about dry at this point (I try to avoid my blow dryer and let my hair air dry, so I draw out my routine to give time for that). I’ll part it (down the middle) and apply another round of texturizer, this time Aveda’s Volumizing Tonic. Shake hair like maniac and hope for the best.

5 mins: Brush teeth then apply a lipstick (pick a color, any color). If I had a dollar for every time I applied my lipstick before brushing my teeth I would be rich. Spritz of perfume (currently, the new Eau de Toilette from Carven) and I’m out the door.

Total Time: 33 minutes

Garance:
3 min: I brush my teeth with a vibrating toothbrush. I really try to be careful and not brush too fast or too harsh. I care about my gums you guys! Brushing your teeth should be 3 min minimum. It’s long, so I listen to a a song and usually try to sing at the same time, which makes Scott laugh… a lot.

10 min: I shower every morning after my breakfast and I wash my hair every other day. I do it while listening to music (right now, I have a reggae obsession) and I may or may not sing from the top of my lungs (and dance, obv) in the shower.

I use Corriander Seed shower gel by Aesop and any shampoo and conditioner that comes my way, cause since my hair is short, it doesn’t really make a difference AND I LOVE THAT FACT.

I may or may not sing at the top of my lungs in the shower.

After the shower if I’m not lazy / in a rush, I lotion my body with some deliciousness by Aesop, again.
I love, love essential oils scents.

Ouh, was about to forget! Moroccan Oil, 2 – 3 presses in my hand and all on my hair, then brush and let it dry. That’s the way I get my hair to stay straight, but I told you about that already :)

Okay then face, this is fast. I use Bioderma Crealine, dry it by giving myself gentle slaps (no idea where this habit came from but love doing that), and then apply Tata Harper serum, Tata Harper moisturizer and Colbert MD eye cream.

(This is when the time consuming thing happens, aka picking out my outfit, but thank god it’s not the subject of the day. If not add an extra half hour for that. I just can’t make choices.)

5 min: After that I do my make up, in order: By Terry foundation, concealer by Benefit, NARS powder, Guerlain Terracotta, Chanel pink blush (I know so many face colors! It’s almost like I’m contouring!!! EXaCTLy!!!), NARS eyeshadow and Benefit Brow Zing.

That’s it! And then I always have a lip gloss / lipstick somewhere in my pockets or my bag. I apply it on my way.

I splash myself with my perfume of the moment, the Bonpoint cologne, and I’m ready.

Total Time: 18 Minutes

How long does it take you to get ready? Do you have a routine or does it change everyday?

  • my routine depends on whether i work from home or not that day (make up or no make up) :)

i don’t shower in the morning, always at night (it helps me sleep better)

i use warm water to open my pores and then nivea soft. it may sound basic but it works great for my skin. on colder days, i use some serum (caudalie, vichy) beneath my roche posay face cream, an eye product and some balm on my lips.

if i wear make up: it’s mascara, blush, eye brow product and a chanel lipstick. most of the times :)

  • My routine is super fast! A 5 minutes shower, during which I wash my body with whatever is in the bathroom + Roc face-wash (the pink one). I wash my hair at night, every other day, so I don’t lose time in the morning. I use dry shampoo if it is my second day after I’ve washed my hair.
I never apply moisturizer but I plan to change this. I remove the rest of make up that survived the previous night make up removing session – I ALWAYS have some remaining mascara, no matter how hard I try. Then I apply make up: foundation, bronzing powder, blush, mascara.
    Et voila! 15 minutes tops.

  • Have you tried using a cleansing butter? I use the Camomile one from TBS after I asked for a sample and it and it removed all my waterproof mascara. *all*. And it doesn’t feel remotely greasy afterwards. It takes some massaging the lashes and a few passages of a muslin cloth (that I haven’t figured out how to de-stain yet), I just press the lashes against my eyelids with it, but it works.

  • Ok…this will sound like a lie but try this: water. I gave up eye makeup remover only 2 months ago by using a saturated (in water!) washcloth, pressed to my eyes (eyelashes) while leaning over the sink. Rinse cloth, repeat. I do this about 6-7 times. It only takes a minute. I then proceed with washing my face with cleanser and *I kid you not* there is no more of that streaky, last bit of mascara still clinging in the morning.

I am 36 and first started wearing mascara when I was 12 so I consider this a very big deal!

  • good morning….under a half hour….i shower night before….hair is short….nars concealer, tart foundation, nars loose powder, l’oreal eye liner (pen..the best), they’re real mascara, RED LIPS!!!!! so many tubes of red lipstick i can’t even begin….lately loving giorgio armani 402…..just add some putty to hair…. put on a black outfit and off i go!!!!!! .happy day everyone XOXOXO

  • Great post, so useful! Also as I was looking for new products (not entirely satisfied with current ones..), so good – thankyou ladies!

  • What a great post.

Kevyn Aucoin Mascaras are the best! http://www.sablebeauty.com

    – creme hydratante caudalie
    – brossage de dents (2min)
    – stick levres nuxe
Total : 9 min grand maximum.

  • “If I had a dollar for every time I applied my lipstick before brushing my teeth I would be rich” HA HA HA HA

Alex – have you tried limiting the amount of hair products you use daily? My hair used to be pretty greasy and now that I have stuck to the basics (shampoo and conditioner) I can afford to wash it twice or three times a week. Maybe you should give it a try?

    xx

    Total 36min

  • I’m so sorry to pick nits (especially since this is in reference to Garance’s hair treatment) but in her post about the short hair, she recommended the MoroccanOil styling cream, in this post the link takes us to MoroccanOil treatment. Which does she use? I have thick, dry hair and am always fighting frizz and curls so would love to know which of those two she uses, since I also have some serious hair envy going on.

    Thank you Alex!

  • Hi Judith! My mistake on the link, it is the styling cream :) xo Alex

  • Alex, I’m with you in the greasy hair department, but in the past few weeks I think I found a solution, and I’ve been so so so stoked about it, because my hair has stopped being flat and greasy. I now have permanent beach vacation hair. It’s amazing, like each strand has its own tiny Tim Riggins coaxing it to be the best. SO, here it is– I stopped washing my hair with shampoo and conditioner. I know the “no poo” thing isn’t revolutionary, I’ve tried it before with the baking soda and vinegar solution, and it didn’t really work out for me, but this time I’m doing it a little differently. I just massage my head in the shower to get it clean, and then twice a day, morning and night, I spray Aveda’s Invati serum on my scalp and rub it in. Something about the serum keeps me from getting too greasy, and it’s volumizing at the same time, and it smells good. Haven’t had a bad hair day yet, and I don’t look like a greaseball. Maybe give it a try? Wishing you a lifetime of happy hair days!

Laurel, so glad to read this and can’t wait to try it – thank you! This blog is a worldwide girlfriend convention .. I love it. Thanks for the fun and enlightening post, Alex.

  • Merci beaucoup Tigrer !

  • I’m embarrassed to confess that it takes me at least an hour to get ready in the morning, and I don’t even shower in the mornings! (On the rare occasion I do, it takes even longer.) Hmm. Maybe I need to minimalize my beauty routine… Some days take longer than others, though, depending on if I get caught up doing things in between.

    Shani x
    She Dreams in Perfect French

  • don’t worry, do your own thing. I take HOURS to get ready and I start early. I have to ease into the day, and it is not in my nature to rush at all in the morning. I take a long shower, I sit down to eat, I do mositurizers and then sit and read some blogs. There is not a reward for fastest time, certainly. I can’t.

  • Great photo and I use moisturizing creams only now, but like they told me.. I need to youse it more often. Hm.

  • So inspired to de-clutter my dressing table now!

  • Everyone should know that Cetaphil is FULL of parabens. By full, I mean of the eight listed ingredients, three are parabens… synthetic preservatives that have been linked to cancers including lymphoma and breast cancer. In my mind – not worth it, no matter how well it works at removing my eye makeup.

    ;)

  • Does anybody mentioned pee? I swear, this is the first thing I need to do in the morning :-) But beside this, of course I love my morning routine so much! Half asleep with almost closed eyes I go to the kitchen to prepare coffee. It takes 15 minutes to boil it in italian moka pot, so I have time to shower. I wash my hair almost every day (always with Shu Uemura Velvet Moisture Shampoo), but I avoud masks or treatments. It takes too much time, so I do prefer some leave on conditioner. My top right now it’s mix of Shu Uemura Essence Absolue (massage into damp hair) and Aveda Smooth Infusion (finishing touch). I use Jo Malone shower gel in Lime basil&mandarin, it’s so refreshing and energizing! The benefit is that it moistures a lot too – you can save some time and skip body balm! Right after the shower I take my coffe out of the stove and I have couple of minutes for the skincare – I use Bobbi Brown hydrating face cream – it has a primer so my make up stay longer. Coffee time! A small hour with magazines and my favourite websites, chill out and relax before busy day at work. Face look much better, swelling and redness are gone, I can start with the make up! I must confess, I love this moment the most.
While doing make up, my hair gets dry. This natural way to dry my hair gives them nice shape and waves. All I need to finish it’s a bit of surf spray (Bumble&Bumble it’s my fav one) and, voilà!
    Ready to go!

Oh, wait! I have nothing to wear!

  • Hey guys?! only see one or two mentions of SPF! As an older person I can attest to why it is so necessary–wasn’t around when I was growing up. Save your pretty young skin.

  • TWO HOURS!! No seriously. I wake up, press the snooze button for 10-15 minutes (bad, I know). Then I make myself a hot water with lemon – in the dark because I’m still semi-asleep – and sip that while I read my scriptures, being the good little Mormon girl I am. Then I go to the gym, which I allow an hour for since it takes about 15 min to walk there, 30 min to actually do any form of exercise including generous amounts of stretching *cough* and then 15 min to walk back. Then I’ll have a shower, brush my teeth and moisturise and dress! I eat breakfast and do my makeup on the tube to work since I’ve already wasted so much time haha. My excuse is I move so much slower in the mornings!

  • Also I follow my routine meticulously, it is now a matter of habit otherwise go to the confusion… :-)
    Passa a trovarmi VeryFP

  • Ahh two of you use Brow Zing! I tried it as well for a while, but thought the effect with the cream especially was way too dense. Now today I bought Benefits Gimme Brow, which is much more of a mascara and gives colour and structure. And I absolutely adore it! I very much recommend it for anyone who isn’t too crazy about Brow Zing.

My routine is 10 min shower, making a cup of tea and eating some fruit, 5 min hair blow dry (after adding heat protection mousse) and then adding some structure powder, 5 minute make-up (mascara, bit of under the eye concealer, bit of blush (I have a BB blush cream from L’Oreal which gives a great natural effect) and also the eyebrow mascara). And then hopefully by that time I’ve figured out what to wear!

    hi girls,

    10 min douche +hydratation corps
là la galère commence : le make up full option (non négociable)

    love routines:)
the first thing i do is drink warm water w lemon 3 min
    shower+body milk – 15 mins
coffee and breakfast – 20 mins
    teeth – 2 mins
dressing up (clothes chosen night before or in shower) – 10 mins
face cleansing, hydrating and make-up – foundation, guerlain terracota bronzer, mascara, eyeliner, red lipstick – 15 mins
    hair – 5 mins

roughly 1 hour and 15 mins :) i like to start the day w/o rush and enjoying all little things i do

  • I always love hearing about other women’s morning routines! I feel like I take forever and appreciate tips and tricks. Am I the only person in the world who broke out in acne after using Tata Harper products?? I keep hearing about how they are practically miracle products, yet when I gave them a go, my skin freaked out! Sad face. I want them to work so badly. Maybe they just are not products meant for acne prone skin?

  • 30 to 40 minutes if I’m in a rush. And I take showers in the evening ’cause I have to get up super early (or maybe I just think it’s early, oh well). So I get up and my hair is a mess and it pretty much stays the same during the day but I’m well known for that super ‘just out of bed never seen a comb look’) I think it’s arty and not everybody can pull it off – so I’ll just hope that I can)
Then comes make up and because I usually prepare my clothes for the day the night before I’m done in no time.
Also this whole morning routine sometimes include a mug of coffee and a cig but that’s if I’m super lucky)

  • Every morning I wake up and make breakfast. I sit on my computer, browsing to my emails, facebook, instagram etc while I eat my breakfast. I am not a coffee girl, I am a tea girl! (That takes me about 20-30 minutes. 5 minutes if i am in hurry.) Then I brush my teeth. I wash my face usually with Apivita’s cleanser with propolis an citrus (my skin type is combination), the same toner and I continue with Ole Henriksen’s truth serum or Vichy’s Ideale serum, my day cream and eye cream both Korres of wild rose line. (that takes me about 10 minutes) I picking my outfit (3 min. and I am ready) Then it’s makeup time! Foundation by Clinique the syperbalanced one, by Benefit concealer, by Too Faced shadow insurance, by MAC blush (fleur power is my favorite), by Maybelline mascara and by Maxfactor powder. My eyeshadows are by Sleek or KIKO ot something else. I always have a lipstick or lipgloss in my bag, so I apply it on my way. (7-8min.)

I have a shower every night so I skip that step in the morning and I bath my hair twice a week also in the evening.

  • Thanks for sharing your tips to get ready quickly ladies!

I just had one thought for Alex, which could be that because you wash your hair so often, your scalp is overproducing oils that make your hair greasy! There was an interesting article on refinery 29 a while ago about this: http://www.refinery29.com/shampoo-free …I could be completely wrong but this was a problem for me too until I stopped washing my hair as frequently! xo, H

  • people always offer this as an explanation for oily hair and I’m sure this is true for some people, but some of us just have oily hair! I’ve tried washing it less a few times (and I never wear product) and guess what happens when I don’t wash my hair – it gets even oilier! then it gets waxy and no amount of washing with shampoo will degrease until I wash with vinegar. it’s disgusting. some of us are just meant to shampoo daily and that’s all there is to it.

  • v jealous of all your routines! Unluckily for me I have school every day, so the time I have to get ready is limited (I’m also the worst morning person in the world)
I usually shower/bath at night, as I find it too stressful in the mornings, and I take an unnecessarily long time.. then I try and eat something for breakfast, throw on some light makeup and tie my hair up in some sort of messy style. I never wear my hair down for school for some reason, kind of a ritual of mine now.

  • Love all the mentions of Tata Harper products! I’m a natural beauty junkie myself. You should try May Lindstrom’s skin line. Her problem solver mask and blue cocoon balm are AMAZING!!!!!! Truly transformative for the skin.

  • It’s true – May Lindstrom is the best! It’s so crazy for anyone to ever use La Mer – ever.

  • I’m thinking about starting zu use John Masters Organics and had a little chat about it with the hair dresser at my local store for organic beauty products. He told me to water down the shampoo and apply it to my dry hair… Do you guys use the shampoo that way? And is it working out well? Thanks! x

5 mins – brush teeth, wash face with cetaphil and shower with marks&spencers fig and orange shower cream/johnson&johnson whatever which is on the shelf

3 mins – skincare- pat hado labo toner on face, dior capture under eye cream, benzyl cream for breakouts and dior skin on whole face (i started using it about a month ago and it’s AMAZING) – lotion up body with nivea whitening serum (cos it has spf and I live in super tropical malaysia) – spritz on jo malone nectarine blossom and honey perfume

10 mins – makeup – eyemakeup takes the longest – i use various shu uemura cosmetics – base, darker brown on edges, highlighter on brow bone, blend, carefully draw gel eyeliner – curl lashes – apply dior eyelash serum and dior show mascara – comb it out and curl it some more with a heated eye lash curling wand – use a foundation brush to apply the thinnest layer of dior BB cream with SPF – smudge on some shu uemura blusher with brush – spritz on shu uemura depsea water to finish – clean brushes – run a comb thru hair and smudge on some shu umeura depsea lip serum – one more spritz of jo malone to make me smile (i am still addicted to the smell after 4 years)

my morning soundtrack is usually something on spotify – my fav song right now to get ready to is Happy OR i leave QI or a documentary on and listen while i get ready (stephen fry is THE BEST)

  • WOW you guys are FAST! I shower the night before and STILL take 30 minutes to leave home…

  • I want to steal your diptyque-as-a-container idea!!! ….how do you get all the candle wax out!?

  • Me too!!!! I knew I kept the burned out leftovers for a reason!!!

DH figured out how to manage this – turn the oven on super low, as low as it will go. Stick the dead candle in there for 5 minutes. Watch really closely to make sure nothing catches fire (that part is my contribution to the protocol.)

Use oven mitts to remove the glass container, and pour out the melted wax (not down the sink!!!!).

Wash the now empty container with soap and warm water.

  • I love love this!
Ok-here’s mine: iphone alarm sounds at 6:45 am. At 53 years of age I STILL want to whine like a baby when it goes off. Check Pinterest(addicting) and weather then jump out of bed. I’m so not a morning person so I take my shower at night. Wash my hair about twice a week because it’s thick and somewhat dry,and it just looks better when it’s not squeaky clean.
I splash my face with cool water, shove a clip onto my bangs and slather on an oil(Aura Cacia Rosehip Oil),then Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream. Menopause brings a new definition to “dry skin.” While my face is soaking in the moisture I brush my teeth with my electric toothbrush for two minutes. Garance, how do you not drool your toothpaste at 3 minutes??? I’m so impatient I can barely finish two!
Next is RMS UN cover up,MAC brow crayon in Lingering,Maybelline Great Lash Mascara in black,RMS Living Luminizer(it’s magic!),ending with RMS liptocheek in Diabolique on my lips. I throw my clothes on(black/grey/navy top plus denim),Ambre Blends oil(I’m loving Solace at the moment) and out the door with my coffee/soy creamer in hand!
    HEllooo morning!

  • I love that you admit to not being happy when the alarm goes off. Me neither! I set my alarm for the latest I need to get up to leave for work on time: 6:45 on a non-hairwashing day; 6:30 on a hair washing day.

5 min: I get up, stumble to the bathroom, take care of teeth/face washing/putting contacts in.
10 min: Shower – wash and condition hair (organix coconut milk shampoo & conditioner; am in the pool a lot yet no stylist has ever known that chlorine has even touched my hair. I credit the sulfate free Organix products), wash everywhere else, squeeze the extra water out of my long hair (fine hair with waves), spray in some bumble & bumble tonic spray as a layer before applying some alcohol-free lemon scented product (cheaper brand from the drugstore). Yes, I apply hair product in the shower so I can scrunch it up while wet, then I wash my hands so that I don’t get hair products on my hands when I’m doing my makeup. would cause major breakouts.

10 min: make a smoothie, drink it while perusing email/facebook/instagram
10 min: makeup (liquid foundation + pale eyeshadow + mascara – then toss on Eos lip balm in mint and then the latest lipstick color I wear daily) and dry my hair quickly..leaving the house with it 2/3 dry. (Wish I would get up earlier so that air drying my hair would be an option.)

If I am running late and get up at 7 AM, then I rush through the shower and getting ready, make a smoothie to go, and put on lipstick in the car. Have to leave home by 7:30 AM at the latest.

  • It’s funny, because the majority of my morning routine revolves around coffee and breakfast, which take a good 30-45 minutes and happen during my check email/the news (aka facebook and instagram) ritual.
The actual getting ready part is about 10 minutes – 5 for makeup and teeth and 5 for getting dressed.

I always set my alarm about 30 minutes earlier than I actually get up, in hopes that I might actually do a small workout. Snooze always wins.
No matter how much time I give myself though, I am ALWAYS rushing frantically out the door, running late, scurrying to catch the subway. That’s just the way it is I guess.

  • God, you guys are fast, very impressive. I stagger around for ages in the morning drinking tea and reading internet gossip. I’m just not a get-up-and-go type of person.

  • Oh my god I am in awe of all of you. I take 90 MINUTES to get ready! 90! And that’s not including a shower! (I usually shower and wash my hair at night and that’s a whole routine in itself.) Granted my 90 minutes includes preparing and eating breakfast (cannot leave the house without breakfast) and washing up afterwards. There’s the contact lens thing, the eyebrow tweezing thing, the wardrobe selection thing, the jewelry selection thing, the re-packing my handbag thing, the shade of eyeshadow selection thing, and the fact that even though I’ve been drawing cat eyes on my lids for years, I am still terrible at it and it still takes me ages. (But I’m determined to look like Anna Karina at all costs, so what can I say?) Oh and I have to take time to get the Democracy Now! podcast going so that my getting ready routine is as informative as it is productive. I’m lucky that my boss doesn’t seem to mind (too much) that I’m 20 minutes late every single day. The routine takes precedence.

  • No matter how hard I try, I seem to take FOREVER to get ready in the morning…

    – Quick shower to rinse off (I only wash my hair like twice a week, and I usually do this at night because my hair requires a lot of maintenance to dry).

    – Wash face/apply moisturizer/serum/eye cream. I’ve been struggling with acne for a while now, and I’ve been jumping between different product lines to see if anything will help. I’m currently washing with Clinique Acne Solutions 3-Step, then Clinique dramatically different moisturizing gel, Clinique Dark Spots remover for those pesky red acne scars. Not sure where aging prevention fits into this…too many things to deal with, and my skin freaks out when I use way too many things unfortunately.

    – Makeup. I started using Bobbi Brown Tinted Moisturizer, it’s light and gives that perfectly dewy look. Bare Minerals Stroke Of Light Eye Brightener, Bobbi Brown Pink Brightening Brick blush and Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hr Blush in Blissful mixed, eyebrow powder by Damone Roberts in Ginger (a godsend for us gingers). Benefit Longwear Powder Shadow in Nude Swings, Laura Mercier Full Blown Volume mascara, RMS Beauty Highlighter in the corners of my eyes and my cupids bow. Sometimes Lorac Front Of The Line Pro eyeliner, but not everyday. That is the best liquid pen eyeliner I’ve tried and worth the price, for sure.

    – A bowl of cereal in here somewhere

    – Hair. Generally a spray of dry shampoo at my roots and use my hands to rub it all in. Sometimes I’ll curl my hair into beachy waves, but lately I’m liking it a bit straight and tousled. Bonus points for less effort as well, IMO.

    – Clothes. My nemesis in the morning. Usually it’ll take like 50 outfit tries before I am honest with myself and throw on skinny jeans, a striped boatneck tee, and my delicate gold jewelry. I’ll swipe on some Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment, spritz on my favorite combo of Jo Malone scents (Peony & Blush Suede + Vanilla & Anise) and frantically rush out the door!

  • it takes me a really long time to get ready in the morning. i spend way too much time sipping my coffee and checking instagram. lol

J’aime beaucoup. Merci Garance !

I go straight to the kitchen and make coffee. Then my boyfriend comes down and makes me breakfast.

I wash my face in the shower with Aesop Purifying Facial Cream Cleanser; I only wash my hair on the week end (Kiehls: argan oil shampoo, avocado oil conditioner). I use a super-rich olive and green tea organic body wash from Nubian Heritage. My skin is crazy-dry, and so’s my hair (never gets greasy, turns into a puff of frizz when it’s squeaky clean).

I’m convinced I only have 60 seconds to apply moisturizer to my face once I’ve patted it dry. Right now I’m using this stuff which is just meh. I moved recently and haven’t found the great moisturizer for my new climate. 2x/week, I put a REN serum under it.

The electric toothbrush has a timer for 2 minutes; I use those two minutes to practice standing on one leg (for my ballet class). By then my moisturizer has set and the steam cleared from the mirror. I use this amazing tinted sunscreen by Skinceuticals called Physical Fusion UV Defense, which I apply with a foundation brush. It’s 50 SPF!

Then I need to do my eyebrows; they are SO pale I don’t pluck them, just use an Anastasia powder to make them visible. Marc Jacobs’ gel crayon eyeliner is my secret weapon: I wear big Buddy Holly-style glasses, and this is the magic stuff that makes my eyes visible through the lenses.

    8 minutes.
Plus a swipe of Lovemarc lippy after I’ve kissed my guy goodbye

Sometimes, if I care, I’ll eyeshadow: I have a Stila palette called “in the know” which is full of grays and neutrals. Sometimes, if I look particularly haggard or pallid, I’ll swipe on some blush. Clinique, with a big rose pressed into the powder, and I’m pretty sure it’s actually a bronzer.

    xxo,
    isti orange

  • It never ceases to amaze me how long my morning routine takes. I suppose I have never broken it down…
10min – Shower. Depending on the time of year, I will shower in the AM (summer slick rinsing), PM (winter) or both (summer). Shampoo and condition (every 2nd or 3rd day), soap – always in that order.
2min – Brush teeth; spritz thermal water on face.
15min – Moisturize my face and body. This is where it gets slow, as I wait for it to sink in while thinking about what to wear.
15min – Put on my face. Armani foundation, Cle de Peau concealer under the eyes and around the nose, non-existent dusting of Armani loose powder, maybe a swipe or smudge of blush or bronzer, Shiseido powder to fill in sparse Asian eyebrows, maybe finger-applying eyeshadow, Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner, black mascara on the upper lashes.
5min – Spritz on a scent and get dressed.
0-10min – Hair. It’s its own beast. I like to air dry it because I don’t know how to do hair, and because trying to fight slick, limp-ish Asian hair to look like Giselle’s often makes it more limp.
That means if it is a summer morning, my morning routine may take up to 1 hour. Que horror! What am I doing wrong?

  • Super sympa ce post!

    Bisous

  • 1. Wake up.

Somehow levitate out of bed, into the kitchen, make coffee and breakfast (usually cereal, sometimes a croissant, muffin, fruit & yogurt, toast, or oatmeal). Stumble into the living room and turn on Morning Joe. Stare blankly at Mika for 15 minutes while consuming breakfast and waiting for the caffeine to work.

    2. Shower

Kerastase color protect shampoo, and the new Volumifique conditioner, which I am loving. Begone, 5:00 limp roots. Also loving Uriage’s shower gel right now, and the body scrub from Melvita, which has a nice citrus scent. About 10 minutes.

    3. Post-shower

Various lotions and potions; Right now, Ole Henrikson Sheer Transformation for the face, Origins Ginzing for the underye area, and CO Bigelow lemon body cream. Product into the hair; Kerastase Ciment thermique, concentrating on the ends. bumble thickening spray at the roots. Forlornly check coffee cup to see if there’s any more coffee. About 5 minutes.

    4. Hair

Least favorite part, the blow-dry. This takes a good 12 minutes.

    5. Makeup

The easy part. Urban Decay shadow; Dr. Jardt BB cream; T. Le Clerc loose powder; Chanel blush; Almay liquid eyeliner; wait 90 seconds, then Guerlain mascara, but I’m thinking of switching back to Chanel. About 5 minutes overall.

    6. Dress

Perfume; Right now CO Bigelow lemon, same as the lotion. Fragrance never sticks to me, layering helps. Only about 5 minutes, if everything goes well, because I decided during the shower/post-shower/hair phases. Discovering a hole in my sweater, or that one of my socks is missing (or that none of my socks are clean), will set this process back.

    7. Pre-departure

Finding all the $h!# before leaving the house. One day I will get it together and have a system for this, and be sure everything is in its place **before** falling asleep at night (aka, losing consciousness on the couch while trying to stay awake through Jon Stewart). Phone, keys, notepad, laptop, wallet, scarf, gloves, coat. Earrings, generally removed in a semi-concious state the night before and left somewhere inappropriate.

I too am in awe of you guys at the studio – I could never, never make it out of the house in 20 minutes!!

  • Sounds very relaxing! Must try it out!

  • Just thought of sharing, my mother and grandmother grew up in a small town in Afghanistan and they had the most beautiful glowing skin. The secret..they used to use their own long hair to scrub their face every morning. Long before face cloths and scrubbing tools were available there.

  • My routine is the same, but changes in the products that I use, I change it up every few days, more posts like these please.

  • Love the photo…it’s my wallpaper now.

I have a couple of routines, one for when I get up on time and one for when I choose sleep over beauty. The second one is used much more often and takes about a half hour including dressing.

A méditer :)

ps.
