Here’s the last episode in the Changing Lifestyles series. You may remember how I told you all about how my move to New York threw me off and why I gained weight and how I ended my negative thought cycle to finally find some balance.

This last chapter is the last chapter because it explains how I became Gwyneth Paltrow. Not as blond, but just as dangerously Perfecta.

That said, I have an appointment to the hairdresser tomorrow. I might become a blonde…

Naaaah, I’m kidding.

So… A moral tale.

Once upon a time, there was a young (yeahhhh) girl who loved chocolate and cigarettes but hated exercise. All exercise except for snowboarding and go-karting and of course, surfing, which she was a professional at, but besides those, all exercise was such a chore that she had to come up with a final solution:

She’d just never exercise.

She really liked exercising yep, in her daydreams. But she just never had time. She only had time to smoke cigarettes outside the cafés, but not for exercising. And on top of that, she traveled a lot, and with all those trips, how can you expect to exercise regularly?

Run! You can run everywhere, right?

Not good enough. Running messes up your joints, everyone knows that. And it’s no good for your breasts! And really, running… I mean c’mon, could it get more boring?

Use the gym in the hotel!!! Easy.

Not so much. I love sports… Real ones, that is. Not machines. They just won’t do. Pfff! I’m not gonna go all hamster on a cardio machine.

Do some yoga!

Nope. It’s boring and there are so many people who eat organic food in there. And plus they say the most annoying things like “Namaste” and “Ommmm.” Can they just say “thank you” like everyone else? And what the heck is that anyway, ommmm?

So yeah, you get that this young girl is me and you get a taste of the 18,000 excuses I find for not exercising.

From time to time, in a Gwyneth Paltrowed haze – once every three months or so – I would toss on my running shoes or hop on my yoga mat and of course, I would hate it even more, seeing how absolutely out of shape I was.

I could have kept on like that for a very long time.

The real problem actually was my stress level. I was always somewhat of the anxious type, but the more time passed, the worse it got.

Like I told you before, it was during my trip to Australia that it all came to a head. And being so far from everything, yoga – and the meditation that goes with it – was the only thing that calmed me down.

But how do you do yoga all by yourself? I started looking around on the internet and I found the coolest thing. It’s called MyYogaOnline and it’s simply a site of yoga videos. You chose your level, what type you want to practice, and one of the really well-known teachers gives you a class.

I started with the 15 minutes classes. After about 10 minutes, I was so bored I’d start thinking about which restaurant I was going to go to that night, what I was going to post on the blog or if I had locked the door to the apartment. I’d often quit half way into the class. But there was no one there to judge me. And even 5 minutes of yoga did me some good.

Once I got back to New York, I kept with it. The positive effects on my mood were amazing. Ask Scott, my yoga changed his life too. I wasn’t as anxious and stayed relatively calm in the face of problems. I was feeling good and so well rested.

I went to one class a week. It was tough… I’m not flexible at all and I didn’t have any muscle to sustain my downward dog. Sometimes I’d just quit in the middle of the class and ran back home.

But despite it all, I continued on.

Because at the end of class, I was always smiling.

—–

So it was in Paris, if you remember well, that I started changing my way of eating. The day I decided to stop eating bread, I also decided to start running. And I don’t really know why.

I bought a bra made of reenforced concrete. I put Florence and the Machine in my headphones and out I went running, so totally inspired.

So totally totally tooooooootalllyyyy, inspi….

I didn’t even make it through The Dog Days Are Over.

It’s the first song on the album.

I’m not kidding. I made it about four minutes before I was swimming in sweat. After about 8 minutes, my legs couldn’t move anymore I was so out of breath. So terrible. I got back to my house hiding behind my iPhone.

But same story there… I don’t know why, but I continued on.

————-

Months passed. I did yoga when I had time and a little bit of running when I needed to release the pressure.

I still didn’t feel at all sporty. I was still the worst in every yoga class I went to and none of my jogs lasted more than 25 minutes.

But I continued on.

———

And then summer arrived and that’s when I was transformed into Gwyneth.

I don’t know what happened… I just suddenly started loving all of it.

Without really realizing it, my muscles got stronger and I was getting more flexible. The frustration turned into pleasure. I swear, I never thought I would’ve loved exercising.

Maybe I need to make you a little table so you can understand. I don’t know Gwyneth personally, but she seems really perfect, always in tip-top shape, well put together… She’s a good cook, she’s cool and smiling… and so yeah, I guess the opposite of me is what I’m saying.

Gwyneth, I love you and you really seem nice. But you just seem too perfect!!! You piss me off you piss me off you piss me off…

That said, I kind of shifted from the right side of the table to the left. Not saying that there’s anyway I’m getting up at 4:30 in the morning to do my sun salutations (Gwyneth, is it true? You seriously do that?), but I bought some cute outfits to go to the gym in – and a pink yoga mat (I have an exercise personality totally the opposite of my daily persona. I let the Jane Fonda part of me come right out. A pink yoga mat, can you imagine? Oh man…)

So that’s how you become all Gwyneth Paltrowed and how you too can become annoying – the kind of girl that says, “I love yoga! I love running! Wahoo!” (in a high voice of course) – so just a warning, this next paragraph is going to be a little annoying – (well, I should say, this paragraph would have TOTALLY pissed me off before I transformed into Gwyneth Paltrow).

But seriously, it’s true :

In yoga, you don’t look at yourself in the mirror. You get really concentrated on your movements and breath and let yourself get into an almost meditative state. You don’t question why you’re doing what you’re doing, you just are.

For one hour, ou are neither laughing nor cynical, nothing. You are just present.

And that’s what’s so fantastic about yoga. Not only does it blow off steam, strengthen muscle and stretch you out, but take it a step further and it gives you a totally new mental strength that changes your life.

“The important thing is just to continue on.” The wise words from my philosophy teacher back when. I’m almost positive he wasn’t talking about yoga, but still, it stuck with me and it fits.

We’ve reached the end of my Changing Lifestyle series. On that note, I leave you with that as all these good vibes have made me want a glass of red wine. Yeah, it’s 5:30, what have you got to say about it?

Gwyneth might not approve.

  • Garance, you are a star…

  • Dear Garance,

Thank you for this wonderful illustration! But, your editorial is even OUTSTANDING!!!

  • c’est ça, le sport: une drogue. Suffit de tomber dedans, c’est tout. Après, tu peux plus arrêter. “you can check out any time you like but you can never leeeaaaaave” (Hotel trèèès California)
Suffisait de commencer. Ton show must go on!!! courage!

  • hahaha, the Garance vs. Gwyneth table made me laugh so hard! I’m so glad you found the balance and started exercising! Excellent post series Garance, I’m so glad you decided to share them :)

    xxx,

  • Haha! I love yoga, but only when it’s over, which is basically how I feel about any kind of exercise! I saw Gwyneth interviewed by Jonathan Ross during the iTunes festival. There were about thirty five or so other people in attendance and let me tell you, she was just as flawless and lovely in person as I imagined. For what it’s worth, she did admit to taking her kids out for “junk food” at Pizza Express sometimes, though.

Tu me fais du bien. Bisous.

  • chchchggggchchcgggggggggg!
(the sound of a standing ovation)

  • This is oh so inspiring Garance! I feel like I’m on the edge of a big lifestyle change and I promise you I’ll even make it to that double spinning class today I love to hate! ;)

  • Et c’est quoi le yoga que tu fais? Hatha, Ashtanga, Power?

  • I really enjoyed this post, Garance. Very much appreciated!

    bisous, M.

  • Another fab article Garance. Merci. Thanks for sharing your workout experiences with the rest of us. I ask myself “What would Gwyneth do?” quite a bit. I’ve been trying out the recipes in her cookbook and I surprise myself when I make “healthy blueberry muffins” with spelt flour. Yeah – spelt flour!? Enjoy your new found muscles!

  • OMG I TOTALY GET THIS! You are too funny. I am reading this in the train and laughing so hard I am crying…. Hamster reference is killng me.

I adore the discipline in GP and love her new cook book. She is easy to mock, but something seems so genuine in her. Xxx I am inspired by your quest to better yourself. GOOD FOR YOU! I suppose we need to work at keeping our bodies and spirits centered so that we are better people to our family and friends, funny how that works. When we are indulgent by giving ourselves some time to be healthy we reciprocate the good to others.

Great lesson, you will now inspire me to slim down and shape up! I was 140 pounds at my best. I am 155 and lethargic. Yoga mat is by the door heavy with dust. Best part of yoga is the end when you are encouraged to breath, and close your yes…ya baby. I will try it again!

SHOW US A PICTURE OF YOUR NEW SELF! :-)))))

  • I have enjoyed all of these changing lifestyle posts. Very fun. And now I’m going running, in the rain. You’ve inspired me.

  • Bahaha, Garance, you are a hoot! Loved your Garance vs Gwyneth table. I myself am trying to ‘Gwyneth-fy’ myself a tad by giving her ‘exercise guru’ slash business partner Tracy Anderson’s DVD’s a go. And they are GOOD! Bad, because I can barely do them, but boy, does it give you a workout! I will still try to get to the gym to do some occasional Zumba classes, but thankfully, with the DVD’s, only my 16 month old daughter seems me embarrass myself with all the huffing and puffing and going purple in the face. :)
    Bisous,

  • … et tu as arrêté de fumer aussi ?? j’ai du mal à y croire …

  • Fabulous! :)

  • Great series! I almost lived them through myself by reading (and a little as well in real life)! Very inspirational.
    Thank you!

  • Oh Garance, I know exactly how you felt. I’m still in the pre-happy-about-exercise stage & feeling worse about my weight gain than ever. I love to eat & drink good wine. Thing is, I go thru stages of exercise & good eating as well, and just as you said, it makes things worse! In a couple of weeks when I finish my cross-country move, I’m determined to join a gym – even more so because I read your post this morning. I now feel like I have some more hope to get in shape because I’m not the only one in this dilemma. Thank you for your honest & refreshing look at how real women see the world :) Blessings, Erin xoxo

  • I absolutely love this post :-)

  • Ahhh Garance, j’adore ton article !

  • It’s funny how stuff like yoga and running don’t make sense until they do and then you love them. You do have to invest a little time in it to really “get it”. I just tried yoga for the people on 38th and 6th last friday and I loved it. It is only 5$ a class which I think is important because yoga shouldn’t be an expensive luxury. So when I find a place that makes it accessible, I like to patronize it. Yoga shouldn’t be 15$ – 20$ a class. Check them out. If I see you there on Friday nights I will buy you a Yogi cocktail (read: bottled water).

    Kisses, Francine

    bises!

  • Well… My first Yoga class will be Sunday!! This post came right on time!

    Thanks!

  • Garance,

  • that´s so funny garance keep sharing you funny funny life! i have also started doing: yoga (only once a week..), cycling and boxing! its great

  • Just dance,girl!

  • Hahaha Garance !

You’ll see, little Garance !

  • Thank you so much for always keeping it real Garance! :)

  • Hilarious! Thank you!

  • Now that you have tried your first doughnut (as I just read on some blog called The Sartorialist) you must forget yoga when you get back to New York and go directly to the Doughnut Plant for the best doughnuts in the world. That’s perfection!

  • Wow canon Garance! Tu me motive! Namasté! :)

Like another person commented your posts are like wine they get amazing and amazing every day.
    Love,

  • I’m a long time fan and have loved every line of this series, mostly because it speaks to me – the girl who loathes yoga and running and has to talk herself into going to the gym every single time. That said, I’m also refusing to buy into this whole ‘middle age’ thing and I won’t accept my rear end residing on the back of my knees. so every excuse that I make, I will remember your series here and just keep going. Thank you!

  • Merci Garance!

  • Namaste! Love the post and i am you – well minus the running – my joints are that bit older and seriously dont need the pressure but you want to see me walking – at speed – god i think i have turned into my very own alter-ego! xx

    http://fashionandfrank.blogspot.com/

  • Puffffffff !

  • I LOVE yoga (did twenty minutes on my bedroom floor this morning!) but I totally agree with you on the grocery-list thing. I mean, HOW do you do this “focus and get centered” thing? Because that’s what’s supposed to be the whole benefit of yoga, isn’t it? I do it because it stretches my muscles and I love that feeling in the morning. But that “zen” stuff? I have yet to master it.

  • What’s flawless is this piece. You really are turning into Gwyneth — but in a good way. ;)

  • I like to read that you feel great after your yoga classes Garance!!
That is the whole point of exercising!! Give a better mood and feel
    good about yourself.
    I loved the comparison!!

    Bisous

  • Oops, I think you mean you went from the LEFT side of the table to the RIGHT — sorry, proofreading has been a big part of my work life.

That said, this is fantastic! It is amazing how addictive exercise can be. I started swimming a couple of years ago and go several times a week. My gym closes during the last week of the summer before Labor Day and I have been nuts without my tri-weekly swim.

    Great post!

    MERCI

  • I love that you’re sense of humor through it all, and you’re recognizing that you needed to make some changes in your life, but you haven’t changed what makes you-YOU! :)

    Merci !

  • Mouais…

  • Garance, I think this must be my favourite post you have written.

Absolutely hilarious! And I agree on the view regarding exercise…. For four years after graduating from high-school I did no exercise. Until I met yoga. Back problems disappeared, I have a healthier lifestyle, and just feel better overall.

(I’m still laughing at your Gwyneth vs Garance chart)

  • I read your blog every day and I this is my very favorite! So funny, so true. Good for you!!

  • After I started reading, I was wondering wether was you or me you were talking about, I make the same excuses about excercising, i guess i’ll be back to use the bike as main transport, it was so good, but it got stolen and i just couldn’t trust the world.

  • I love this. You have such a great raw tone to your writing and seem to reach people at any level in their life, everyone has something that they’re just not into but need to look at it from a different perspective. I did this same thing with running. It just makes you feel that much better about yourself and you get an every-day healthy platform to start off your day!

  • Loving loving loving this post…I need a kick in the behind to start exercising again. I have managed to keep weight off so I keep telling myself, “why do I need exercise?” THEN I went into a dressing room and got a real look at my ARMS ewww! I need exercise going to the yoga website now….

  • Brilliant as always!

  • Amazing post! I totally feel you, well, the pre-gwyneth you at least, yoga stresses me out and running basically sounds like hell to me, mostly because everything hurts and I have zero stamina. But I thin kalso, we can all find something, some way to get exercise that isn’t torture, that is actually fun, maybe even from the beginning, without even having to force yourself to learn to like it. For me, ballet classes are like meditation, probably the way some people feel about yoga. You focus and concentrate and go deep within your body to try and get it to function beautifully and efficiently and healthily. And then for cardio, I’d much rather do a hiphop class than run! Or go swimming, which is my newest obsession:

    http://nomadic-d.blogspot.com/2011/07/suit-up.html

I think it’s great that you’ve found love in your heart for yoga and running, but there might be some physical activity out there for you that doesn’t require learning to love it. Just saying. Meanwhile, congratulations on becoming gwynnified!

  • I’ve tried to be Gwyneth Paltrowed too, but it just never worked out for me. I’m glad it worked for you, Garance! BTW, ur too funny it hurts…now, I hate you too:P

  • A few years ago I had to join a gym, because I can’t run for more than 5 minutes. But if I just make myself go to the gym (and don’t think about the working out part), they make me work once I get there. It gives me more energy for the rest of the day.

  • Dear Garance,
Gwyneth Paltrow is no longer in possession of her body, after a few flops in the film business she sold the rights over her body to a consortium of macrobiotic food producers, ashtanga yoga gurus and pilates dictators (remember the Stepword Wives?). Didn’t you know that?!
Having said all that – check out yogatoday.com on the itunes store, you can download free video podcasts with great yoga exercises :-)
    stay true dear!
    bisous!

    http://misslittlecm.blogspot.com/

  • Hilarious. I was an extra in a movie with Gwyneth Paltrow _(Sylvia)_. She seemed really nice (everyone on set said so, too). Yet, do not worry: *no one* is Parfaita | Perfecta or Parfaitus | Perfectus for the men. Everyone has a bad hair day, a bad breath day or just a bad day.
Glad to see Yoga is helping! You almost convinced that I should try. Almost.

  • garance, you’re ace.

my best friend just asked me to become a bridesmaid so i too am having to change my lifestyle so i look my best for her day. no one wants bridesmaids with chubby arms and a bit of belly roll do they!

so i am ignoring chocolate and resisting wine, i went to a spinning class last night and it’s legs, bums and tums tonight. and i find it so boring and hard

but this has shown me that there is light at the end of the tunnel! maybe i’ll become like gwynny too….
    xx

  • of all of your posts, i love your changing lifestyle posts. they are so well thought through and positively executed. this one is super cool. i’m a huge fan. thanks for sharing!
    xx, http://wordbyjessie.com/

    http://www.chocolatetvieillesdentelles.com

  • Hey Garance, have you picked up a copy of the current American Elle magazine? Miss Gwyneth admits to enjoying the occasional cigarette, which I find delightful to no end. Thought you would enjoy this tidbit too!!

  • Hahahah, this was so funny! I do bake with spelt, even before I heard Gwyneth does that, I do yoga too, and I smoke the occasional cigarette, (and I have intention to give up ) that means I am also almost Gwyneth :D

  • GARANCE! I am so glad you have transformed, you must be so happy — But please never change who you are! Never give up the glass of red wine a day!

I too hate intentional exercise. I hate anything that requires a different change of clothes and more than an hour of my day …

Until I found dance class. I take modern dance classes, and I really feel like I’m making art, and working on remembering the routines. The exercise is secondary.

Also, I started riding my bike to work, which will help me get rid of tummy fat, I hope.

    BEST of luck to you!
    xx

  • Thank you so much! Your blog is soooooooo funny and you are just as cool as Gwyneth, maybe a little cooler. She probably can’t draw! :)

  • All is well !

  • I love your honesty, as well as your sarcasm ;) I had a similar battle with yoga and now consider myself an addicted yogi. It’s like my body started to crave it! I wrote all about finding my type of yoga on my blog here:

    http://www.thestylegloss.com/2011/01/19/cleaning-cooking-and-gardening/

  • J’ai assisté à mon premier cours de philo aujourd’hui :)

  • Bravo, Garance! I, too, started running this year & hated every minute of it, and now, I’ve started to like it (not in love, yet), much to my surprise. I’ve been doing yoga for years but have made a personal goal to start meditating, which, for a talkative, extroverted person like myself, is harder than getting up to run nowadays. However, the benefits of both are slowly showing and I’m that much happier for it. Thanks for sharing your personal journey with us!

  • Garance!
    S

  • Ah I don’t know what to say except that you’re so funny, and I love reading your blog so much. Oh, and I completely agree about exercise.

  • I love, love, love your sense of humor.
I love that you are unafraid to make fun of yourself…and somehow come off writing a post that ends up being completely inspiring and sincere. xx

  • Bidonnant cet article!

J’aime ton illustration ! On reconnait bien Parfaita ;-)

  • HAKUNA MATATA d’ailleurs, pas Acuna Matata …

  • Excellent! Thank you for this series – I just debated on taking a ballet/Pilates class and I’m glad I signed up. Thanks for your inspiration!

  • Oh wow – I think I have found a new friend. Thank you for the humor and realness. I rather walk the streets for hours – but then somehow I always end up in a cafe drinking vin rouge.

    http://laperleaparis.blogspot.com/

  • Thanks Garance for the lovely editorial! I understand you perfectly – I went through every fitnesss/yoga/ pilates/etc class available in my city, and decided that’s just not for me – dying of boredom/lack of upper body strengh/and no shape at all, during the first 10 minutes of an overcrowded class filled with women, all dressed in the newest sweats worth 10 times what I was wearing..

I decided, I’ll just stay as I am, no biggie, who needs muscles anyway..?

And actually a solution found me – my friend bought me a jack russell terrier for my last birthday… You have no idea what a life-changing thing that was! Jack russell needs at least two hours of running per day, otherwise it just eats your couch and all of the Christian Louboutins – those most expensive ones.. After 8 months I’m in better shape than ever, becasue of all that running and stupid games at a park. I know it must sound crazy as a method for staying fit & healthy, but it was definately a life changing experience…

  • Ca me rassure, finalement on est toutes pareilles. Xoxo

    http://mesptitesideesmode.wordpress.com/

    Bisous.

  • AMEN!!! Love the blog. I learned yoga when I lived in NYC and loved it…but I eventually learned to incorporate my style of relaxation(not involving organic food eaters, natural birthing mothers or self righteous whatevers), so I do the basics at home and put on the music that I like most. Yoga is about finding ones own personal balance, flexibilty. When we age we lose this joint/muscle flexibility, yoga(or gymnastics for that matter) helps us to maintain it…it also has other benefits.) So get yourself a yoga mat, and keep doing it at home to the music you like best in your PJs.
    Kisses

  • Great article and beautiful illustration Garance!
It was so nice to read your experience as today is my last day of the 30 day yoga challenge, I am in NO WAY fit, I hate hate hate working out, but I had decided, after turning 32 and quitting smoking after 15 years, that it was now or never!
I kept going, I tried very hard not to give up and now, after 30 days of doing yoga every day, I can very much relate to all the positive things that you mentioned!
The trick is indeed to keep doing it until it becomes a habit and no longer an effort.
    Cheers to yoga!

  • So lovely! and I laughed (:

  • superbe.

  • You’re just so lovely… and the feeling you have about exercising (I mean… the ones you had before….), are exactly what I feel.
I just envy people who love exercising…. I wish I did.

Oh well… let me get back to my reality now… that is, no exercising at all.
    =)

  • Ben oui, so what (you’re still a rockstar :p) ??! ;)

    des bisous

  • Garance, you’ve convinced me to stop using water! Now Caudalie micellar solution is my water replacement! And my skin looks better :)

Now you might have convinced me to start doing yoga (you, not Gwynnie) :)

    Love your blog xx

    Bisou bisouu

  • Garance! Have you ever seen the amazing Body Heat? Where William Hurt runs in the hot summer nights, ending his treks on a steamy pier, only to pull out a soft pack of cigarettes in the end?! My dream. I totally get it. Love the posts.

  • But, you see, you’re mad at her for being so perfect but I’m reading this and thinking you are the most wonderful thing and how much I enjoy what you do, how you do it, and the smile I make in response to your character. Who needs perfect?

Simply put: love this. a lot.

  • I love this post! I strapped my boobs down with a sports bra and have been the little hamster in the gym. But after three days, it is the most amazing feeling. Yet, I am still not excited to exercise. 45 minutes in the gym, and I’m done. But I would love to become Gwyneth and be happy and fit and perfect!

  • There’s nothing wrong with a glass of red wine everyday :)

    -Grace

    http://www.theafeminada.com

Merci pour ton post, yes we can!

  • I love your chart;)

  • absolutely hysterical! i have tears running down my face from laughing so much!! but so true that you get to a point where you end up enjoy exercising. great it is helping you holistically. tx for the inspiration.

  • Gwyneth & I have a love/hate relationship, too…and she doesn’t know me, either. Probably best to admire her from afar. There’s got to be someone who knows something unsavory about her somewhere & when it gets revealed, that person will become Most Popular on the PLANET. You are already very kind to share these thoughts…I’m waiting on one of Geneen Roth’s books to arrive at my library, ’cause I’m pretty sure this problem is all in my head. In the meantime, let’s keep on keepin’ on!

  • this is such an inspiration for me…
fact is, that the reason that your blog, is my favorite blog, is because you are being a human and not pretending to be all that perfect!
    kisses

  • oh garance!

Thank you so much for the series! It has really resonated with me at this time in my life. Your posts are like warm messages from a friend I’ve had all my life.

    xxoo

    Amanda

  • I have had more or less same experience with sports as you…but over the years I needed the gym/running to keep in shape. and now i have even got at personal trainer – you need to try that. ITS THE BEST ( i’m smiling now – because it’s seems as every chic american girl has her ovn PT…but anyway…).

    E

  • I’m a big fan of Gwyneth but that “perfection” thing is why I like you and your site more. Your blog/stories/personality seem so honest and real (and HILARIOUS), whereas Gwyneth’s blog/stories/personality sees like a facade of a fantasy dreamland-castle. Keep being who you are Garance Dore because I think that’s REAL perfection!

  • je chiale de rire
    best post ever
    xoxo eloïse

  • Gwyneth is not perfect. The one thing I remember off top of my head is an article criticizing her for allowing her girl to skip class for beauty salon. But she’s a chill and cool person overall.

I think most people are nice and perfectly charming most of the time, but we mess up, we curse, and we just really don’t feel like ourselves sometimes when things pile up. It happens and then it’s gone, and we are still cool. If that make sense.

  • kelliblue September, 6 2011, 8:54 / Reply

My parents: both athletes (former). My brother: triathlete. Other brother: bikes across the country. My sister: bikes, hikes, walks, loves all things outdoors. ME: tired, overweight, computer geek of a couch potato. Where did I go wrong?

So Garance you’re very inspiring–I may just finally start exercising myself–some day. At least now that the temps are finally below triple digits.

    Shine on you crazy diamond.

  • one of my absolute favorites!!

  • “The important thing is just to continue on.”
Absolutely brilliant! I am going to remember that because I often start and then just as quickly stop the new good habits I try to pick up!

By the way, it is so funny you write about Gwyneth Paltrow because the reason I discovered your blog was that she talked about you and your fabulous blog on her Goop site! I’m smiling just imagining what her expression will be when she logs on and reads this post (which I’m sure she will!)

    All the best,
    Mary

  • I want you to be my best friend.

    : )

  • Thank you! Your whole attitude emulates mine when it comes to exercise, smoking, don’t have time, etc. Summer is here (Australia) and I’m about to start running. Just had to wait until my ray ban aviators arrived as you can’t exercise in Karen Walkers… I will definitely not delay now, you are an inspiration. Never expected you’d be an exercise inspiration but I’m glad you are!!

  • What more I can say? As funny as usual!!!

  • i just think, what would gwyneth do?

  • I am so in love with these kind of posts… Garance, you’re hilarious! And yes, that last paragraph was a bit annoying, because I am still in the ‘ignoring phase’. For a while there I went every second day to the gym – lifting weights and the occasional run on the tread mill. I felt good. Then a few days I got busy and didn’t have time to go to the gym… Guess what, that was the end of my Sporty Spice days. I have been trying to convince myself to start again ever since. But I guess what you’re saying is true and I might just give it a try again this week. I might, I’ll try…

  • I just want to say thank you for sharing your thoughts in the “Changing Lifestyles” series – it’s very brave of you to be so honest with your readers and I really, really appreciate your insight, humor and honesty.

  • Bonjour Garance,

  • Love the way you write. I started with pilates and it’s like you said, you’re so concentrated on breathing and your moves that you don’t care about the f**** mirror. Hope you have another series in mind.

  • I’m so happy for you!! Do you have any tips on good looking running outfits? Besides Stella?

    lots of love

  • Dear Garance,

Your best post EVER!!! Sooooo fun!! I’ve totally seen myself, only i haven’t reach the 100% Paltrowed state yet. But I’ll keep trying!!

You are the prove that being cool + loving fashion + not taking anything too serioulsy (at the same time) is possible.

    Thanks so much!

Je me sens bien.

  • Garance, you are very talented writer. And get us a lesson – it’s a philosophical question – to be self or to be “look like”? To be unique or to be “like ” known and famous person in all the world? It’s a serious job to make an image/to be perfect. Also difficult to follow this success example. How to be a perfectionista when you are writing or painting or…playing…or…illustrating? Or cooking crepes? Mission Impossible.

    http://loulune.wordpress.com/

  • Thank you so much for these posts. They are very inspiring.
I needed it, Thank you again Garrance.

  • Haha !
    J’adore ton blog, merci !

  • Thank you so much!!!! I’ll try the Yooga on line you recomend us!!! It´s been very funny reading this post series, a bit sad cause it’s finished, i´m gonna miss it!!!!

  • Fantastic post! I totally understand where you’re coming from… about 2 or 3 years into my gym membership I finally ‘got’ the fitness thing, and now i like to work out several times a week (including yoga, but I look in the mirror to see if I’m doing Warrior pose right…) The ‘continue on’ point is so true! But I’m not all Gwynn about it..there is no way that I would get up super early, or even early to get to the gym..!

  • :-)) so funny!

  • J’ A-D-O-R-E!

    Bonne continuation, Garance!

    http://www.ladynblogspot.blogspot.com

  • as tu arrêter de fumer?

  • Garance your stories are always so awesome if normally I’d stop half of article on your blog I can’t stop reading ahhaha
    great job really!

    Dear garance,
I just wanted to rectify, I don’t wear Stella, but Balenciaga when I go to my yoga session.
My very good friend Nicolas design sweet sweet gentle sports clothes, specialy for me.
    Love from,
    Gwynny.

  • Watch the very funny “SPAIN- ON THE ROAD AGAIN” series featuring Gwyneth
She’s cool and loves to eat, that’s why she cooks! also has a good balanced perception of life and just makes you smile

  • I hope you are writing a book…a very funny book about life changes and sticking to it! It’s so true about yoga and the sticking to it part that sucks sometimes. Just started taking classes at Strala yoga on broadway…it’s great and no ommmm you should try.
xoxo- love your blog almost as much as mojitos:)

  • Dear Garance, this is so inspiring! Thank you for your honesty. I have problems with my sugar and really need to look out what I eat. It’s not easy, because I love desserts, bread and wine. But I will work on myself :)

  • Excellent cet article ! Haha !

    Bonne journée

    http://www.jeunesgenscommehier.com/

  • Ummmmm, looking at your post, I feel so guilty to my body.
I lack exercise and have ” no muscle ” !! And easily get tired and is so weak!

I like your blog! Esp. the thing you talk.

  • Dear Garance,

I’ve been reading your blog for years and you were always such a fabulous company, just someone I can really relate to!
With these series you’ve totally inspired me! And for that, I just want to say thank you, merci and obrigada!

    Love from Portugal!
    Bisou

  • I can totally relate to your sentiments! Thanks for being so honest. It helps the rest of us forge on! And after all that inspiration I too am in need of a glass of wine ;)

  • Uauuu! you really are so funny! your man is very lucky!!
    bisou,
    e.

Nope, can’t believe it. But whatever gets you there…Il y a longtemps j’ai recommendé YogaToday.com–glad to hear you are finding what works for you day by day just as we all need too…

Namasté, as you know, means the best in me salutes the best in you–and cheezy or not, you do deserve it…All the happiness you bring to so many of us all over the world…

  • Nice job, Garawyneth! She pisses me off too, but in a good way. Keep on going with your bad self!

P.S. I hate the “namastes” at the end of the yoga class too. ;)

  • Ahhhh…

    http://www.elpais.com/articulo/agenda/caida/desgracia/Gwyneth/Paltrow/elpepugen/20110613elpepiage_1/Tes

  • Garance – please can you tell me which type of yoga you do? I get so confused over which one to do!

PS. One of my favourite blog posts.

  • Hahaha ! Enorme :D

  • don’t hate on the yoga! “namaste” and “om” are actually sanskrit, an ancient indian language. how is that annoying? they have meanings you know. i suggest you look some stuff up before you decide to just hate it.

  • Hihi, Garance! Many will recognise this! I always have my healthy/sporty periods in which I start by wearing more sporty clothes!

Ur so funny and seem refreshingly normal for someone working in the fashion ind.

    I wanna be a Gwyneth too !!!

  • Garance, you are such an incredibly charming woman! Reading your blogs always reminds me not to take myself too seriously and that fashion is meant to be fun. But this series has been especially encouraging and enjoyable to read.

    :)

  • Garance it sounds like some of the yoga you’re practicing in NYC isn’t challenging enough. I recommend you check out Elena Brower who teaches Anusara in Soho – she is amazing! Seriously cutting gluten out of your diet makes one thin but I must say it’s no fun! Good Luck

Connais-tu la méthode The blood type diet? http://www.dadamo.com

  • This entire series has been amazing. Thank you for sharing your story with us–so many women struggle with body stuff (I do, anyway), and it’s hard to get to a place of feeling comfortable. I’ve always been inspired by your talent, and now I’m inspired by your courage and honesty.

  • Garance- please read Gwyenth’s interview in Elle USA , September issue. She admits to sneaking an occasional cigarette with her girlfriends! I adore everything she writes, wears and does( that the press lets us see) also AND adore you ( and everything you let us see!)

  • It’s really great that you shared this with us! I can really relate to the whole “j’ai des trucs bien plus sympa à faire que du sport”. It’s ironic because I used to do synchronized swimming for 7 years at a highly competitive national level and when I quit and started modeling, I just stopped everything…just to lose all the muscle definition acquired from intense training. So I just dieted and led a totally sport averse lifestyle until I started university and gained a LOT of weight. I was miserable for so long because I just couldn’t recover my ex-fabulous metabolism of an athlete and had developed a very unhealthy relationship to food in general. Finding a happy balance was so not easy! Nutrition aside, it was just very difficult to find a meanigful physical activity that I could stick to. Gym was out of the question because I couldn’t force myself to do boring, repetitive sequences over and over, and admit it, a space choc full of sweaty, houghing people is not particularly chic ;) swimming…well, I kind of had a self professed allergy to chlorine water!!! So, when I discovered hot yoga, it was a beautiful revelation. For me, it was an instant coup de cœur with its graceful asanas and such positive energy currents! And the best part of it all is that it brings discipline back in your life and tunes you in with your body-mind connection, so no more emotional chocolate, only du chocolat pour se faire plaisir, ce qui sera toujours à la mode ;)

  • Oh Garance you are fabulous!!!
Your adoable blog post total speaks to me, as I’m the same exercise, although unfortunately I haven’t reached your Gwyneth Paltrow stage yet. Maybe I’ll try your philosophy.

  • Don’t we all just want to be as perfect as Gwyneth?

    http://fashionthroughtravel.blogspot.com/

  • I love this post…so funny and so true. Why do they say Ommmm???? You are always so charming and hysterical!

    http://www.twinkletoes-golddangles.blogspot.com

  • this made my WEEK! so funny… i am NOT an exercise/gym person either (maybe i have some french in me, haha) i do like sports, snowboarding, tennis, because it’s a game (and tricks you into exercising, you never really have to think about the working out part!!!) i run or pretend to do yoga like once a month. oh, but you must try pilates too! i use dvds and i do it for like 15-20 min, which is so minimal, but better than nothing?! all about baby steps.

  • This is a very funny and inspiring post, Garance, really! And because I know only a little bit of French, I read it in English! I think in French is hilarious :D Keep up with the good yoga work, Gwyneth :D!

  • Garance, having just seen photos of you on Sartorialist’s site, I am speechless as to a moving piece you recently wrote about getting fat since you now live in America.
To think I felt sorry for you and somehow kindred to your struggle! Jeez! You’re so bloody skinny women!
All my sympathy has evaporated in exasperation!
Some people have no idea what it is to actually be fat/overweight.

    My advice now?
    Get over yourself love!

  • I used to go to latin dance classes in the university. I continued for more than two years – 10 hours per week. After some time, I combined it with yoga but it lasted only 3-4 months. after some time, I quitted both and never exercised again.

today, I suffer a lot from back pain. I work 8 hours sitting in an office chair and it doesn’t really help. So I started my sun salutations again. I don’t have the nerve to get up at 4:30 and really salute the sun, but I try to do it regularly. it feels great.

just wanted to thank you for keeping it real. Your posts, with minor confessions of imperfection, are way better than Stepford Wife stories :)

  • J’adooore!

  • Booouuuh… Moi aussi je veux être une Parfaita! Tu nous as abandonnées, Garance! :D

  • Funny post – I don’t see why you don’t have to give up bread, though! I think people have a tragic misconception that carbs are evil. One just has to choose wisely; wholegrains over refined flour, for instance, and exercising portion control.

Bon j’ai aussitôt pensé à toi et un peu à Sex and the City quand même ;))

  • I LOVED this post. Hysterical!!!
Funny part was I just did a post on my blog about wanting to be Gwyneth! She’s simply too perfect!

    Thanks for the laugh….

  • MERCI Garance !

  • Garance,

This post really made me smile. We all have our own inner Gwenyth to live up to. Sometimes we get there only when we aren’t fixating too much on it. strange but true! Love your writing! <3

  • Hi Garance!

Please try functional training. Stott pilates. It’s more strength training than the lifestyle that yoga is. I live in Stockholm and am an instructor here. There’s a place called ‘Pilates on Fifth’ that’s surprisingly on Fifth Av…heh That’s just one I found online but it might be better if you ask around.

    Best wishes, Jehane

  • sorry… I meant it’s more strength training than the lifestyle choice that yoga is…wow don’t know how that got so mixed up hah

  • Garance is in GREAT shape now – see her latest pictures at The Sartorialist

  • Nous sommes vraiment toutes les memes!
    Merci pour ces sourires!

  • I read once that Gwyneth wears Spanx. Now every time I wear them I say, ‘If it’s good enough for Gwyneth then it’s good enough for me’. This can convince anyone to wear them. Sometimes I say ‘if it’s good enough for Garance then it good enough for me’ about other things. You are just as wonderful as Gwyneth you always make me smile. Thank you.

  • LOVED this! You are so, so funny, and I was laughing my way through the post!

  • You’re so funny! Thanks for sharing and putting a smile on my face…this post is my highlight of the day!

  • Thank you for these! You expressed my obsession with exercise, or lack there of.. and the obsession with every morsel I eat. I’ve been in a self-loathing trance for years. I think mine has to do with fear. And my therapist said I just talk about how scared I am. So, the answer is to face my fears. And I am.. (applying to grad school, volunteering in the field, taking pre-requisites.) Those are the deeper issues. Weight is a part of that. I’m not sure how to tie the two together. When I exercise, it certainly isn’t for me, but I want it to be. I may try yoga. Thanks, so nice.

  • You should try working out at the gym that Gwyneth uses/half owns. She works out with the teeny tiny Tracy Anderson. I bet you would love her, and I bet you would look forward to your workouts then. Alot of us do her DVD’s at home. Let me know if you visit her gym in Tribeca or the Hampton’s. She also has one in Los Angeles and maybe in London too. I’m not sure. Have fun! She will work your tail off!

  • Can’t stop smiling.

  • An enjoyable post and a lovely blog you have here:)

I used to be like the old you too! I was out of shape and I hated exercise (stupid mean sport teachers at school!). But now I like it:) I used to do yoga, but it is so far from my house that I had to give it up (going to yoga would take 4 hours all together and I really really hate the bus and it never turns up anymore grrr). But now I power walk…everywhere! It’s so good for you:)

    Kim

  • I totally find myself in this post :D.

  • I loved this post. I really became inspired. I think will do some yoga tomorrow and start running again.

You are so funny in the way you describe things!

  • Oh my goodness, I loved this so much. I think because I identify with the whole damn thing!

Break up with ciggies and do yoga.

    I might try it. :)

  • Bonjour Garance!

    Merci !!

  • Garance I have read your blog for years and loved it but never felt compelled to participate in the comments (a blog voyeur perhaps?!) until today. I’ve been in bed on a beautiful Saturday morning catching up on my favourite blogs and I’ve just finished your Changing Lifestyle series – I’m so moved! I think you’re fabulous, you’ve been able to so succinctly describe your experiences, and mine as it turns out! Reading this series was so incredibly relatable (which spell check seems to be trying to tell me isn’t a word). I had no idea that other woman had the same experiences and thoughts as me when it comes to weight and everything thing related. It made me laugh and put a little frog in my throat.
    Thank you!

  • Raphaele January, 2 2013, 8:50 / Reply

  • tear* grin* laugh* approval* pours port wine* grateful* Kiss*

  • Ordinary things done consistently produce extraordinary results :) I am happy for your transformation.

  • I love this series; so sad it’s ending. I really enjoy your humor and down to earth-ness. Thank you.

  • Tes posts me font vraiment beaucoup rire :p

  • I suppose I have lost the whole point of this article as I keep thinking of this pre yoga Garance and what a fun person she would be. Gwenyths are many many in this perfection seeking metro but the mojito dreaming Garance can only be one.
    Absolutely loved this post.
