Here you have an overview of my mascaras.
I loooooove mascara. It’s beautiful…
Okay, I mean I love it in the morning when it’s time to put it on and I hate it at nighttime when I’m on my fourth cotton ball trying to get it off looking like a depressed Kung Fu Panda. Even though I’m in love with Kung Fu Panda.
Ooookay. Let’s stay postive. Today, I want to talk to you about my love of mascara and of course all the different types of brushes. As you can see in the photo, there’s something for everyone. Brushes come in all shapes and sizes.
…
(Heeey!!! Get your mind out of the gutter!!!)
(You can really can make innuendo out of anything…)
I’ve tried so many of them and every time I get a new one, I think it’s my favorite.
There’s the super precise brushes that give you those extra long lashes, and then the bushy ones (Ooooh, quit it!) that give you those long thick ones and then there is the crooked ones (!!!) that are supposed to make the whole operation easier but I always end up with mascar everywhere every time.
That all said, I think I’ve found my perfect brush.
What are your thoughts when it comes to brushes? How do you prefer them? Ahahaha ;-)
L to R: Maybelline Great Lash, Maybelline Lots of Lashes, L’O’real Volume Millions de Cils, L’Oreal Telescopic, L’O’real Volume Millions de Cils, Maybelline Full & Soft, L’Oreal Telescopic Explosion, Clinique Bottom Lash, Dolce & Gabbana Intenseyes, Lancome Virtuose.

It really depends on the effect you’re trying to achieve: natural or dramatic? For the dramatic/fake lashes looking version, I love the rounded, spiked version by Givenchy, as well as the YSL fake lashes mascara (a little less good than the previous one though). For a more natural, ‘of-course-my-lashes-look-like-that-without-anything-on-them’ finish, I use brown mascara and a thick brush, but just one coat at the roots, and the cheaper the better, Max Factor is usually very good.

i love the classic maybeline but also something volumizing :)

You are so lucky that you can wear mascara and yo have big pretty eyes too. It would all work on you I bet. I love mascara too but I can’t wear it. I have NO BOTTOM lashes. I even tried the $40 ‘tube’ stuff and I look like a racoon in ten minutes. What should I do? Help me Internet friends!
Just don’t put any on your bottom lashes! The little bit that will blink onto your lower lashes is enough. This is the way I do it, also I use brown because I have red-brown hair and fair brows and lashes – black lashes look silly on me.
I never wear mascara on the bottom lashes! It accentuates under eye bags etc!
I don’t put mascara on the bottom lashes as I have none. What happens is that the mascara on the top lashes just kinda breaks over the course of the day and leaves black under my eyes…I know that these are not real problems in the grand scheme of things but I had to ask.
Hi Amm!
I have asian monoeyelids and short sparse lashes so I have been using Japanese brands and they work best on me! Fasio, Majolica Majorca for mascara and Stila (made in Japan though a Japanese brand) for eyeliner works for me so far!
Humid hot weather, oily eyelids, and yet no smudge after 12 hours. It’s a godsend, I tell you. I ran a search and you should be able to get it here!

Garance, tu as oublié les oscillantes!….;-)))))))))))
http://curiosites-futilites.blogspot.com
Oups je ne suis pas réveillée! Je voulais dire They’re Real de Benefit!
I’m a mascara addict as well, and recently discovered the Kevin Aucoin one’s. They are AMAZING, make your lashes look super long and beautiful, and the best part is they come off with water like little tubes off your lashes… no mess, no cotton balls, just WATER :D
Très chouette ce visuel Garance !

Trop belle ta photo !

Uh oh, I am going to have to out myself here as a major mascara junkie. Not proud, but there it is.
I started out with the usual gateway drugs like Maybelline and Revlon, but soon that wasn’t enough anymore, I needed L’Oreal, sometimes 2 coats at a time. I thought I had it under control, and for a long time I did until a pusher named Allure magazine started showing me what I’d been missing. Dior came into my life like a dark mysterious friend, whispering in my ear about backstage secrets and untold thickness. I was hooked again. Now I need Lancôme Hypnose, Star and Drama, as well as all the black Dior’s, not to mention the YSL and Givenchy.
Did I mention the Japanese?
I hang my head…but you can still see my lashes!
You are a great writer – I love your comment !
I love this piece, its really creative :D AND I love the mascara-girlies you made, the drawing is really nice!!
http://blog.miamarionette.com/
As tu essayé le LACÔME Hypnôse STAR?
The best way to take of mascara is a few drops of almond oil. It is amazing how easily it makes every trace of mascara go away AND it nourishes the lashes AND it is good for the thin lines and the black circles around the eyes AND it is natural!! kisses from a Greek island!
I was going to suggest the same thing and guess what… I’m from Greece too! :)
Thanks for the greek tip! I’ve tried many removers, and none of them works properly. Does almond oil work for waterproof mascara as well?
yes, very smart picture indeed!
pas trop courbée et pas trop touffue!!!!
:D
I have a few too!! My fav at the moment is one by dior. :)
http://www.bonnieclydemarni.blogspot.gr/
My favourite one is They’re real! by Benefit, with its fat brush, I love it! It makes my look sooo healthy and cool!
ciao
I like mascara too. I use it every day. Long lashes looks amazing. Have a nice day.
http://fashiondenis.blogspot.sk/
Hi, to add to Katarina’s almond oil, olive oil is also a great way to get rid of makeup and clean your face. rub it on, then with a hot towel, rub lightly and boom. its all gone. Olive oil apparently has the same ph level as the skin, so you dont get that dry skin feeling afterward. love the photo!
alors 2 choses :
* la photo-illustration est terrible, comment as-tu fait ??
* tu as mis un lien vers le post How to take it off : il a 850 com’ !! Est-ce le meilleur score du blog ? C’est fou.
Sinon rien, j’ai arrêté de me maquiller. :)) (ca me fait plaisir)
I’ve been using Dior’s Diorshow mascara (waterproof!) since 2007. Tube after tube after tube! One coat in the morning, and I’m good to go. It’s always in my purse so I can add another coat, just like there are always heels in my car just for those day-to-night occasions. :)
I’ve tried them all. Nothing compares to the L’Oreal Voluminous CURVED brush. It is magic! The bristles aren’t too long or too thin. Expensive mascaras are no match. It’s the best deal ever, and makes amazing lashes!
I’m just glad I wasn’t drinking coffee when I read this post because I would have spit coffee out onto my from laughing at “crooked ones”! I’m still giggling. Btw, awesome picture!
For me it’s not the brush it’s the mascara. I love estee lauder double wear because it’s REALLY no smudge, it stays it stays forever (though I hate it too a night…) and I can use it also on my lower lashes, that’s cool because I tried million mascaras all the brands you can name and no one works, but this one…andit’s like a waterproof one but is not waterproof (easier to remove!). It’s fantastic.
I’m with you on this one; the mascara itself is more important. None of the brushes I’ve used ever did what they promised. Ok, they did make my lashes longer or thicker, but I usually find that whatever brush I use, the result is that my lashes stick together. And that’s not what I want! But perhaps I have a terrible technique??
I like Clinique Lash Power because it only comes off with warm water, and not with oil (like waterproof mascara – I’m told this is the reason it always smudges underneath your eyes, because it reacts to foundation, oily skin etc.) or cold water/tears. And I seem to be allergic to the stuff that makes mascara waterproof :)
C’est une photo ? Vraiment ? Bluffant.
Here is what I do to clean mascara easier: I wet my fingers and then wash my lashes ( with tap water). Only after this I clean the mascara with a special lotion- it is much easier this way.
Please stop Garance! I’m laughing out loud while I’m supposed to be productive!!!!
Did I miss the part where you say which is your favourite brush? I’m eager to know! The best one I’ve had so far was a L’Oreal Volume Mascara that came on the front of a magazine years ago. It was small & didn’t last long, & I am still looking for a brush as good.
I was recently given a curved brush which I am finding tricky to handle – like you I get it everywhere! I did find a great brush from MAC but the mascara was so full of bits that I had to ditch the whole thing which was a shame because the casing was beautiful.
So do please tell!
There i only one mascara I’m using really. It’s Dior Iconic Show. It’s byeen my absolute favorite since it’s been released. It really makes my lashes look longer (really, just like in the ads!) and is quite easy to remove. I just wash it off while taking a shower.
I like the bottle as well. It’s silver and sooo sublime!
I use Maybelline mascara because is the only one that keep my lashes curve and not down, i also have a loreal stillettos but i have to put it very quick and only once.
To take off the mascara I use biotherm or neutrogena oil that is veeeeeeeeeerry good try it.
kisses from Chile
Hypnôse Drama de Lancôme, THE best!
I’m on my third tube of Maybelline Colossal Waterproof, and I dont think I’d change for any other! It’s so perfect! every other one that I tried before ended up making me look like a panda by lunch time, but not this one. It gives great volume, it’s buildable, and makes the perfect natural lashes as well, and it doesnt come out! that’s actually the only (super small) problem for me… It’s really dificult to take off… I wouldnt mind if they changed the packaging, (it’s so ugly!) but it is great and for a great price!
A ajouter à ta collection ?
Bisous et bravo pour la photo exceptionnelle !
Anne
Lancôme’s Hypnôse Doll Lashes because it separates my lashes and it smells nice. =)
http://tseparfait.com
Garance je t’ adore! I’m a make-up addicted…well I mean that I have insane passion/possession anxiety of make up products…so I can suggest you for a wonderful effect They’ re Real of Benefit (a fantastic brush) and Hypnose Drama di Lancome that has also a fantastic rose scent…… the first has the brush like the third from the left, the second like the first from the right but more rolled….ciao!
Dear Garance, you should use Micelle solution as make-up remover! Its the best, Bisous, M.
There is an American drugstore brand called prestige that makes great macaras. I use theirs called ” my longest lashes” and also love Clinique high impact mascara. The prestige ones do come off pretty easily which is one of the reasons why I love them.
a good brush makes all the difference!
check out my giveaway!
http://lavieenliz.com
Belle photo, by the way.
GARANCE!!!

I have a new favourite; MSCHIC’s TLC Mascara. It’s super easy and fast to apply. It curves and gives volume at the same time, which is exactly what I’ve been looking for!
Love it and love your illustration, as always!

ODE TO THE MASCARA BRUSHHHHHHH!!!!!
the photograph is excellent!
A bon entendeuse ;-)
T’as oublié celles à boule! =D
:-)))))))))))
Garance coquine?… Troooooooop bien.
Love the image Garance – they all have your bun! I totally agree the brush is key to getting the look! Since I started wearing mascara (oh about 20 years ago eek!) my eyelashes would fall out and remover would sting my eyes. My absolute must haves are Arbonne (Swiss + botanical= beautiful) triple action mascara (volume, definiton and LENGTH) and the eye make up remover clears everything off no stings. Xxx
Hi Garance, My favorite, and the mascara I’ve been using for years is Diorshow Iconic by Dior. The key is the “Iconic” version since the brush is so fine that it elongates and thickens lashes without making them look clumpy or “over-mascaraed.” It’s also not too bad to remove at the end of the night since it doesn’t dry up too much.
ISL Shocking in metal gray. Gives you the fake eyelash look w/o the pain ;)
I love Chanel inimitable intense or Lancôme xoxo
Beautifully written! I had to laugh out loud quite a few times.
I currently use Diorshow Extase and so far I’m very happy with it. It’s not waterproof, quite easy to take off and doesn’t smudge. The brush is a bit hard to handle, the first times I used it I had mascara everywhere around my eyes, but it makes my short and straight lashes look amazing! I used Lancôme Doll Eyes before, but non-waterproof makes me look like a panda within a few hours and the waterproof version is too heavy for my lashes, making me look tired and exhausted (well, thank you, that’s exactly what I need) and it doesn’t go off at all when you want it to.

I mix brush with a different mascara :)
* best brush: Telescopic/ Clean definition
* best mascara- Telescopic carbon black.
You end up with extra black, long, clean, natural looking eyelashes!
Garance, so many brushes – so many uses. I’ve never been faithful to just one mascara. Some of the less expensive drugstore brands like L’Oreal’s Voluminous have always been good. Tried some of the latest ones from YSL & Givenchy but haven’t been overly impressed. Love the Diorshow electric blue for a real color jolt & Shu Uemura’s brush for natural looking non-clumpy lashes. Have you ever tried Mineral Mascara? One of my favorites is MicaBella’s mineral lengthening & thickening mascara available at http://www.intrigueimports.com You can’t go wrong with this one & the brush is very nice & flexible.
http://www.intrigueimports.com for MicaBella Mineral Mascara – lengthening & thickening glamour.
The photograph is stunning!!! It gives me inspiration for a painting! Hope you don’t mind…? It won’t be a copy though.
My all time favourite is Diorshow mascara: I love the volume, the length, and it doesn’t apply that clumpy. But with the way my eyes are set (I think this is the reason), eye makeup just ends up everywhere within like an hour :( So for everyday use and long lasting wear, I use tube mascaras. I’ve only tried two but so far my favourite is the Kevin Aucoin curling mascara. Doesn’t really curl but doesn’t go on goopy and really lengthens lashes. I can feel my lashes touching my glasses sometimes when I have the mascara on! Also, so easy to remove. They come right off while I’m showering. No Kung Fu Panda eyes!
Love volume brushes, especially the Chanel one. But I never ever wear waterproof mascara, I just can’t get if off my lashes and I also look like a panda at the end of the day so it doesn’t really matter what I choose ;) xx
http://www.creativityandchocolate.blogspot.com
DIORSHOW!! Fat bushy brush = fat bushy lashes! hahaha
I don’t wear mascara, but I probably should! I’ve always been a little intimidated by it. My lashes are so short, I never know what to do with them!

Internet friends – what do you think about coloured mascara?
For me, Chanel makes the best mascaras, no doubt about it
Wahou !
Without a doubt, Armani Eyes To Kill is the best I have ever used.
My, someone’s feeling frisky!
I love Blinc.
You must try Benefit “They’re Real” mascara. MUST!!!!! Looks like you got eyelash extensions (well, just about!)
The best mascara was 2000 Calorie by Max Factor, which I think has gone out of business. I haven’t been able to find it in the U.S. on my latest trips, after having faithfully purchased a ton of it over many, many years. Personally, I am allergic to Maybelline Great Lash (not funny, since I purchased a ton of it to carry my through a year until my next U.S. voyage). I have been leaning toward Cover Girl–inexpensive but I think the quality is OK. There is cheap and there is good value, and I consider Cover Girl to be good value.
After nearly 40 years of practice, I still get mascara all over the place when applying and have to clean up with a cotton swab. Maybe my lashes are just too long ;)
Bises
Xx
Nice tip!!
I’m posting accessories from Los Angeles on my blog!
Take a look!

I adore mascara, but despise the fact I can’t wear it for work (being a school photographer I take over 1000 shots on a normal working day, so I would end up looking like Alice Cooper!!!). I have heard Blinc mascara is meant to be run / sweat / everything proof …..anyone used it? The same goes for eyeliner – I’m a massive fan of eyeliner/mascara/nude gloss lips but lips are the only thing I have going on a work day. leaving me feeling very unglamourous!!!
http://glanceobservecapture.wordpress.com
Bisou
I don’t comment for 6 months and now that I’ve started I don’t seem to be able to stop!
So, here’s my humble contribution to the debate:
I have long eyelashes which I always get complimented on ‘you’re so lucky, they’re so long’ or ‘I really like your eyelashes where did you get them done?’
The trouble is that I can’t go for the glamourous black mascara look because I constantly have dark circles under my eyes – I repeat constantly… So black mascara means comments like ‘are you OK you look tired? ‘ or ‘I thought you had quit smoking’…
The solution – or shall I say the compromise was to buy transparent mascara – no real effect but I feel more feminine just putting it on – it must be the brush effect :)
The brand – unremarkable, uncomplicated N°7.
I picked up Boots #17 midnight black when I was in London, and I can’t say enough good things about this mascara.
Kanebo 38°!
Its the only one that keeps me from looking like a panda during the day. And at night I just take it off with warm water.
I can cry, sweat, run in the rain, whatever, it just stays in place.
They have a base-mascara to add, if you want it all look really wawawooom too. : )
And it comes in three different brushes.
“They’re Real” by Benefit !!!!
I have been using the Diorshow Backstage Mascara for 7 years now. Even when I was still in University and basically broke all the time, I would still pay a little more for this Mascara because I really think it’s the best out there.
The Kevin Aucoin stuff is the best. So easy to take off
helloooo Garance
I have my henna done every two weeks by my amazing french beautician Sylvanie!
No mascara gives me the fresh look like henna, and I look nice first thing in the morning with no smudged eyes:)))
As to express my eyes even more I use black Chanel mascara and dark blue Sisley mascara.
I love blue as my eyes are crazy blue and I like myself in it…somebody said blue mascara is so 90ties but I don’t care LOL!

For every day use I have to favourites:Chanel and Clinique, their brushes are amazing and both come off with a warm water. For special occasions YSL Shocking is perfect, since the added length and volume is really shocking!
Lovelovelove the new Givenchy. It came recommeded by a makeup artist. It is a 3 bump brush. I have NEVER had my lashes look so long and feel as light as a feather. I don’t even feel like I am wearing any mascara.
And…Garance, I cannot believe that is a photograph. Sooooo beautiful!
I agree with Paola – it’s ALL ABOUT the Kevyn Aucoin mascara. It stays put all day long – ‘no Panda’ guarantee! Plus, it slips off the lash in tubes at the end of the day with a little warm water and a gentle massage of the lash. It is half the price in the US compared with Australia….so, I ask all of my friends who travel to the States to bring it back for me as a special favour. The last friend picked it up in Bloomingdales and the salesperson made a comment about how many Aussie girls come in and buy so many tubes of it!!!
Great photo as well Miss G, nice work!

Paola and Bethanie are on the right track Kevyn Aucoin rocks, but if you want the same thing but cheaper and more choice of colours (ie browns, blues, etc) go for blinc mascara. Same stuff, stays on all day, even if you cry or go swimming, no panda eyes even if you do your lower lashes and comes off with water. What’s not to love? And you Australian girls can by it from SkincareStore.com.au.
just try another mascaras from Japanese brands, they are amazing – girls with natural born short eyelashes know what they are looking for.
I love that still life. It’s so graphic and cool and at first I couldn’t tell what it was of. Fantastic!
Another response about the panda eyes but trust me Garance this product is brilliant! I discovered this local Brooklyn all natural skin care line Sprout at a cute little shop in Greenpoint, The One Well. Their makeup remover is an absolute dream come true. It’s 100% natural, almond, olive, and jojoba oil, and it’s locally made. No more panda eyes, and it supports the neighborhood :)
Mascaradict of the world! do try Ana Sui mascara, is a secret…
Coucou Garance,
inimitable intense de Chanel-it’s really inimitable
Loreal Voluminous Original Mascara is my tride and true friend when it comes to long, voluminous lashes! It’s the only drug store make-up I purchase but I love the brush and it lasts me about 2-3 months. My ultimate fav is Lancome but for the cost of this little magic bottle it only lasts like 4 maybe if you are lucky 6 weeks…. but its really dry at 6 weeks and your topping that coat with the Loreal Voluminous to pick up where the Lancome left off…. just not worth it for the $35. Dior show was ok… but the brush is a bit cumbersome.
xx
i love this illustration!
I’ve tried hundreds over the years and as I get older I have found that the best mascara for a natural look is Bare Minerals Flawless Definition Volumizing in ‘Espresso’.
I’ve selected mine (last week), too, my top 5 Mascaras!
Ce dessin est super, :)

I loooveee Maybelline Full & Soft!!!!! I have experimented with other mascaras but this is the only one I’ve returned to over and over again for the last 8 years. Plus it is one of the easiest mascaras to remove at night :D
Unfortunately, it seems to be harder to find these days…I’m not sure if they are phasing it out, but they shouldn’t!!
<3
