Here’s two or three things I did this week…
I got back from Las Vegas.
I don’t know if you’ve ever been to Vegas, but it’s the craziest city I’ve ever visited. You have to go at least once to see the faux Eiffel Tower (photo) and the faux Pyramids and the faux New York and the faux Venice.
Oh, and to see Cirque du Soleil. But I’ll talk to you about that in more detail later on.
A little less fun though are the hoards of wandering tourists spending their days in the low-light of the mall-casinos. Ouch.
I took pictures in an awesome apartment.
Monica and Sean’s place (photo) have a huge loft where they live and work at their brand Sea… I’ll show you everything next week.
I realized that I love fruit.
Actually, fruit is my favorite thing (Ok, up there with chocolate).
I realized it while on a shoot a few weeks ago where the catering was chuck-full of delicious fruits. Soooo good.
That’s why, when I got back to New York, I had to feed this new found fruit craving and decided to go to the farmer’s market to get some gooood stuff and there, pffffff…
They only had apples! And three strawberries that seemed like they’d been through a war with one another. I mean… Isn’t it primo season for a lot of fruits?
I’m so lost in NYC sometimes.
I had a Spa day.
Honestly, when it comes down to it, I’d rather get myself a massage than a pair of shoes. I love, love, love massages. It makes me love life again when I’m just beat from traveling.
I took a photo from the pool deck (yeah, they have massage chairs IN the pool!!!)(and you can go totally nude in the pool)(only open to women, or else I wouldn’t have gone for it)(a little weird, but totally awesome at the same time) at the Spa in the Mandarin Oriental in Vegas (where I was staying), and it was one of the best spas I’ve ever been to.
I decided to go to Bali.
I mean, Scott and I decided to go together. I’ve dreamed about Bali for ever. We hope to go this summer so if you’ve been before and have places you think we should go, give me your recommendations!!!
In the meantime, a super cool Balinese restaurant opened in Brooklyn called the Selamat Pagi (photo)(I guess I’ll find out what that means later) and I’m going to go check it asap to see what balinese food is all about.
I decided to never leave home without my own tea.
Give me a good tea and I feel right at home no matter where in the world I am. Everything feels better and life makes more sense.
Give me a bad tea (like the yellow Lipton… I mean, WHO came up with this thing?!) and I want to cry.
I finally figured out a solution. Now, all I need is a little bit of hot water for everything in life to make more sense again. I always have some good tea in my bag.
Yeah, totally a grandma thing, but grandmas know everything!!
I never leave home with my moisturizer.
See above, replace “tea” with “moisturizer”.
And finally, BMOTW (Best Moment Of the Week !!!), THESE GIRLS.
Monday, I was invited to a party that Glamour put together called These Girls.
I didn’t know what it was at first. I mean, Alexa Chung was going to give a little talk, as well as Emma Roberts, Amy Poelher and Zosia Mamet. I thought they’d be telling little stories from their lives but I honestly didn’t know what to expect.
Omg it was so great. It was actually full-on stand up comedy, and I LOVE stand-up comedy !!!
Not only did it confirm all I thought about Alexa Chung (not only is she super stylish but she is just as intelligent, hilarious, and deep. She told a story of her heartbreak and did so with such radiance and humor, it was perfect).
I loved Zosia Mamet too. She’s the actress on Girls that everyone loves and is a pro when it comes to stand-up. Lucy Punch had me cracking up so hard too.
More than anything though, I discovered the brilliant lunacy of Amy Schumer who was so crazy funny (and gross) that I just have to step aside and show you some of her videos. I think she’s gonna get big.
Oh, and I should add that I was seated next to Meg Ryan and oh, she was totally the cutest.
See all these women telling intimate stories from their lives and with such humility, humor, and generosity made me love being a woman. Bravo Glamour.
And with that, I’ll let you go!! Scott finally got back from Barcelona and has a million stories for me.
Wait, nevermind. He fell asleep.
…
Oh who cares?! I’m gonna wake him up! Big hugs!!!
(Pfff, I thought I would do one little sentence for each photo and put together a punchy short little post but I suffer from a severe and irrevocable logorrhea. Look it up!).
PS: I printed out my Instagram photos using Printic. It’s so cute to see your photos finally jump out of your phone screen and be able to hold them in your hand.
This Glamour party sounds fun and Bali is such a great idea I’d love to go. I never ever leave my home without my own tea. The last time I did I had to drink this lipton nonsense I was not happy.

what a fantastic week!!!! xoxo (love alex chung!!)
Oooo, bali! We stayed at Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay but honestly, there are plenty of gorgeous places to stay, you can’t go wrong. Definitely eat at the “fish restaurants” they bring on to the beach at Jimbaran Bay – easily one of the cheapest meals but probably one of the best in all of Bali. Grilled seafood, spices, and beer, perfect.
For sure Uluwatu but my favorite was Tanah Lot. After you see the tide go in and out, grab a perch at one of the local restaurants that looks out over the tide area for satay and Beer (I realized I’ve mentioned beer twice now and I don’t even like beer, but it seemed to go well in these two places).
And an absolute must is the Four Seasons Sayan in Ubud – architecturally, one of the most interesting hotels I’ve stayed at. The villas are gorgeous, restaurant tasting dinner very good. They can organize hikes into rice paddies and to surrounding artists – amazing photos to be had. Their spa is also first rate.
Enjoy!
Selamat Pagi , ça veut simplement dire Bonjour !
Bali sounds like so much fun! Oh, and I’m so glad I worked from home today – that video made me laugh so hard!
I was in Bali 11 years ago, in Begawan Giri hotel in Ubud…. heaven!. You should go, at least one night to experience the world famous “asian luxury”
SELAMAT PAGI means good morning in english and it is the very basic words we learn in elementary school along with hello and have a nice day.
Hope we can (accidentally) meet each other in Bali,
gimme good style
Merci bcp… :)
Ohhh Bali ! ‘My’ little paradise ;)
-The restaurant- beach club Potato Head is a place you can’t miss.
-To stay, I would definitely recommend Seminyak area.
-And the nicer shop for leather items is 2ndskinonline in Pettintenget . If you meet the australian owner Tynuska, let her know I recommended it, so maybe she will get you a discount.
And now…just run and grab the Lonely Planet ! haha
Kisses!
Bonjour Garance,
Alors Selamat pagi veut dire : bonjour (matin) !
Proofreading police here. Don’t you mean you’ll never leave home WITHOUT your own tea? I homed right in on that because I always bring my own tea when I travel. Who needs that Lipton crap.
Merci Garance!
Sinon, Amy Schumer a un show, “Inside Amy Schumer”, presque mieux que son stand up!
Bali is a greeeeaaaaaat idea!! I’m from indonesia and i’ve always excited about Bali. Ubud is a must. Gives you a different kind of bali not just beaches but also serene and lush rice fields. Go to Uluwatu for the beautiful cliff and the Kecak dance (the mystical ritual-like atmosphere of the dance will make you hold your breath). You’ll be amazed by how art is an integral part of the Balinese people daily religious life. I hope you’ll bump into a traditional religious procession there. It’s a sight to behold and the women dress in the beautiful traditional kebaya. The Gilis are actually located in Lombok, a different island but will not disappoint you. Gili trawangan is sublime! You should really go there!!! They are not as crowded and touristy like most Bali beaches. But the most important thing is once you’ve arrived in Bali you have to go to a spa asap. It’s soooooo heavenly good you’ll crave for it again and again and again! :D
Love the Instagram printing app! Thanks for the heads up :)

How was cirque? Hope you loved it! Good call on avoiding the casinos. I know you have a funny Vegas story waiting to be told… :)
That spa sounds divine and Bali sounds amazing.
Tu me donnes envie avec ton resto balinais!

Super sympa cet article !
xx.
I don’t usually comment (even though you are my first stop every morning and a vital part of my day), but when you mentioned Bali, I had to share. I stayed at Como Shambhala (http://www.comohotels.com/comoshambhalaestate/como-shambhala-estate-bali) near Ubud for a whole 8 days all by myself two years ago, and it was one of the most special, most luxurious, most important experiences of my life. I loved it so much that I’ve made it a life goal to go back for a week in a year’s time. I’m saving a little each month, and booking off the time now to ensure I actually do it. Wherever you end up staying, I can’t wait to see the posts! xo
Plage de l’hotel The Legian a Seminiak. Mer forte.
a voir.
I cant wait to see your Vegas pics either!! i live here and am always interested in the public perception of my city.. I suggested a few shops on your Instagram photo of New York New York, did you get to see any of the local shops like fruitionLV or Coterie? Btw, love your blog.. its a constant source of entertainment and inspiration.. J’aime trop! <3
These Girls event sounds amazing! It’s inspiring to hear other women’s experiences. xx
http://www.timelessdifference.com
Selamat Pagi means Good Morning. Balinese food is my favorite! It’s so exotic and deeeeelish!
When you visit Bali, also visit Ubud. My grandparents are living there. I love Bali so much. Such a magical island.
Warung Italia has the best Ravioli al pesto! Myyy gosh you make me wanna go home to the island and eat that delicious Balinese food…
xoxo Maria
Merci merci merci, made my day !
Selamat Pagi in Bahasa Malay simply means Good Morning, Malaysia and indonesia shared the same language roots.
http://www.laurablogmode.com
If you happen to go to Bali you should try “Nasi Pedes Ibu Andhika (Mrs Andhika Spicy Rice; it’s open 24/7) and “Nasi Ayam Kadhewatan (“Kadhewatan Chicken Rice). It’s not a fancy place but the food is great. But if you like to go to a fancy place, you could try “Metis” and “Warisan”. For lodgings, I suggest you stay at the Seminyak area for great hotels and villas near the beaches (and also great crowds too) or you could stay in the Nusa Dua area (5 star chain hotels with private beaches). Or if you like some peace and quite, you could always go to Ubud area (beautiful place with lots of paddy fields surrounding the area). You could also stay at the Legian or Kuta area if you’re accustomed with clubs and bars, as they have a lot of bars and clubs that usually opens until 2-4 AM in the morning. But I suggest you go to “Mantra” (it’s a small and currently happening bar in the Seminyak area) and Motel Mexicola (a bar with a Mexican concept and a very cool place to hang out). For beaches, you could always go beach as there are many beaches to explore (I suggest you hire locals to guide you to many small and secret beaches). And if you’re staying long enough, you should try Gili Trawangan (an hour trip from Bali with a boat), it’s a small island with beautiful beaches and calmer place than Bali. Just check out http://www.thebalibible.com . Dont hesitate to ask the locals, they’re such nice people.
xx G.
I love meg ryan!!intelligently-sexy.centerblog.net

Love your collage!! Fantastic week and Bali…must be amazing!!
http://heelsandpeplum.wordpress.com/
I really like this little meme and I may have to steal it.
Definitely travel with your own tea. Teavana actually makes good travel tea sets and I keep a stash of tea bags in a little pouch that I take with me. I’ve even made tea in a hotel with a travel candle, matches, a cup of water from the sink and four metal stacking bracelets. (Go girl scout me!) it wasn’t the hottest, best cup of tea, but it worked for the time considering there were no in-room coffee machines!
http://www.marvelocitystyle.com
Las Vegas hotel survival tip. Some of the major hotels (Palazzo, Venetian) do not have coffee makers in the room and it is a lonnnnnnnng walk to find one and then often lonnnnng lines (which can be fun if you want to meet people at 7 am — I don’t) . Since then I travel with a nifty $10 little heater coil. You just stick it in a cup and it boils the water and then, voila, you can make tea or even drip coffee (yes I bring my own little drip cone and coffee) in your room. I never travel without it. It’s so comforting to know you can have your own favorite tea and coffee anywhere.
WHAT tea would YOU pack?? What tea makes you feel like ‘home’??
Dine at Mozaic and Bumbu Bali
Drink at Kudeta
Ride a bike through the rice paddies of Ubud
Go to Canggu beach in Bali (it’s maybe 1hr drive from Seminyak?) to see gorgeous padi fields next to the beach and both tourist and local surfers catching the waves. Very laidback and cool
Bali, oui oui oui
sandy.

What kind of tea do you drink?
Fruit is truly the best! I eat it for breakfast, snack and even dessert. I love having watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries and cherries and with all of the varieties, you can’t get bored. I love a great cup of green tea and I am trying to have one cup a day either with breakfast or in the evening. It’s great to make the tea and sit with either a scone and a book or just in the quiet.
I’m so with you on the tea thing…
I just got back from a few days in Paris myself (where I met up with a friend from college, reconnecting instantly after more than ten years apart – so much for great friends!), and thanks to your blog (including the great comments) we had a wide range of great places to go and see! And more importantly, bc it was raining pretty much all the time, I discovered that in most of the cafés we went to, you actually do get great tea (I’m mainly referring to Marriage Frères here)! (And in terms of Marriage Frères, there’s – of course – also the great store itself in the Marais… I just have to be careful, collecting those wonderful tins can actually become an addiction…)
Garance, you’re ranked in the top 100 French leading women according to Slate, have you seen that ?
http://www.slate.fr/story/72785/100-francaises-plus-influentes
Love your work and by the way !
Bonjour Garance,
Aaaaaah Garaaance, Bali, why why why are you doing this to me.
Bisous!
I LOVE Vegas! Which Cirque du Soleil show did you see? I can’t wait to hear about it and more about your plans for Bali! Jealous! :)
Bali
un désastre écologique
défigurée par le tourisme de masse
tu reviendras en pleurant
All this tea talk is making me thirsty! Which begs the question: what kind of tea do you drink? Crazy tea enthusiasts want to know!
Oh, as far as farmer’s markets go, California is where it’s at. :-)
P.S. Grandmas do it better.
I stayed at the Manarin in Vegas and zoned out in that same pool in the spa! But my pics don’t look so sultry! Great spa and great non-casino hotel option in Vegas!
Cf nouvelle addiction).
Je voulais faire rapide (euh… pas réussi).
Gaëlle
Hi, I’m Tara from Indonesia.
When you come to Bali, make sure to spend your time in Balangan Beach, less crowded than Dreamland and more beautiful than Kuta. After that, you should have dinner in Menega Cafe Jimbaran, their seafood is sooooo greaaaaat!
Spare your time in Ubud too, strolling around and visit the little shops there, go to Antonio Blanco Museum, walk to Sari Organik, it’s a restaurant hidden in paddy fields and only sell organic foods, people from around the world go there to enjoy the food and the view. You can’t drive a car there, you have to walk like 20 minutes or rent a bicycle.
La Plancha in Double Six beach also a great place to enjoy the sunset, while sip margarita and sittin on a giant beanbag chair. I love Potato Head in Double Six, too. I could spend like a day there.
You can google everything that I wrote above and have fun in Bali.
Ah I wish I could see you and chat with you, G!
Bali is sooo NICE!
I always love it and I know you’re gonna love it.
Which hotel are you gonna stay? If you stay in Kuta, you can go to Kuta Beachwalk for some window shopping and strolling scene, continue to Double Six for a nice food, and watch sunset in Kudeta :))
Eats: Cafe Menega for seafood on the beach. Also try the sweet or spicy corn on the cob from one of the stalls on the beach. La Lucciola for brunch.
Hang: Four Seasons’ Sundara and the W.
bali is magical!!! it’s still one of my all time favorite places to visit even though it has become incredibly and almost impossibly touristy, there are still pockets of enchantment you can stumble across
stay at any one of the aman resorts in bali or even better fly to amanwana on moyo island from bali which is quite spectacular – and as a bonus, the indonesian food at the resort is amazing!
but back to bali, potato head is very cool and i love wandering around in ubud or watching surfers in ulu watu
oh and don’t forget to eat babi guling – i can’t for the life of me remember the location of this place my guide took me but ask around, i’m sure you’ll be able to find lots of recommendations
selamat pagi is good morning in malay but usually in indonesia, they are more likely to say selamat siang – good day :)
I believe you are a visuals person, so here are some photos from my trip to Bali :))

I highly recommend this place!! My husband and I been here and love it soo much!!!

Going to Bali is one of my dreams ! I count on you to share landscapes with us through some photos ;)
Selamat Pagi means Good Morning in Indonesia Garance.. I hope you enjoy your visit in Bali, it is such a charming island :D
Tea. totally agree that a good cup of tea will make us feel better. (now I’m thinking to carry my hot water bottle around).
On Bali – either you stay at your favorite hotel chain (W hotels, GHM hotels, Oberoi, Four Seasons, etc) or rent a gorgeous villa fully staffed with a car and a driver.
Have fun exploring the island rich culture and superb hospitality. Also, Selamat Makan Enak!
Sounds like a very fun week ! i hope i’ll be able to visit vegas one day

Love your post! :-) And I’m so curious, I know, but reg. tea? Which one is the best in your opinion?
:-)
…and oh, I forgot: Regarding Bali: Damai.com is the BEST!!!! :-)
I’m so happy you said what you did about tea. Recently I was staying with a family friend and I brought my own tea. She chided me as being foolish for spending money on nice tea when “Lipton’s is just as good” and “they all taste the same.” I suppose there’s no point in my explaining the pleasure of good tea to someone who likes Lipton’s, but I’m so relieved to know that someone else understands!
So excited that you’re going to Bali Garance, you’ll love it!! Coming from Western Australia (where it’s only a 3 1/2 hr flight =) I’ve been to Bali many times and still absolutely love it! Seminyak is a great place to stay. Make sure you head to Potato Head for a day at the pool and Ku De Ta for requisite sunset drinks. The Shakuhachi boutiques are also a fantastic little shopping experience! Love Gili T island as well – only three hours by speedboat from Bali, it’s a totally different world with white sandy beaches and a totally chilled out vibe and aammaaazziinnngg seafood barbecues on the beach! Super, super jealous – I’m not heading to Bali this year xx
There is a great Indonesian restaurant in NYC on 9th Ave called Bali Nusa Indah that specializes in food from Bali and Java. One of my favorites, and the ginger tea is so perfect at the end of a meal.
Here’s a blurb on it from the New York Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/restaurants/1002207983120/bali-nusa-indah/details.html
You are going to love Bali…..
You just HAVE TO go to the Rock Bar (the Ayana Resort) for sunset cocktails, a brill experience, a travelator down the side of a cliff….amazing!!!
Ubud is great…beware the monkeys :-) We stayed at the Kajane Mua (small villas for 2 with private pool) with excellent service and staff.
Seafood restaurants at Jimbaran bay…cheap and fun.
Sooo much to see and do…you will both love it!!
I went to Bali with my family 2 years ago. I spent there 3 weeks in 3 different locations. What I can recommend for sure is beautiful island Lembongan which is 40 min way by boat from Bali. Is the most relax, beautiful place I have ever been. Also you can’t miss Jimbaran, place with the best and most romantic fish restaurants. Have fun!
Hope to see your Bali pics! For local food, please go to Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka in Ubud for their pork dishes (the recommended one is Nasi Campur Babi Guling-rather spicy) and Bebek Tepi Sawah restaurant also in Ubud, specializing in duck dishes. You might like this place as it overlooks the paddy field. Hopefully Salak Gula Pasir is in season when you go there-Indonesian fruit-definitely should try this one, very sweet and crunchy. A list of fashionable 5* resorts/villas to check out: Ubud Hanging Gardens, Banyan Tree hotel, The Mulia, Ayana, and Alila among others. Bvlgari hotel is also a nice one to check as it sits at the cliff. Rock Bar, Potato Head, Ku De Ta and Mozaic are happening places. Don’t forget to visit Hotel Tugu Bali at Canggu if you have time, Very artistic hotel. Enjoy! Please visit Lombok since you’re only an island away :)
Check out Deus in canggu, Bali. Coolness from Sydney
Try resorts and villas up this end around seminyak (then jump all the chaos, go down to Uluwatu and dreamland)
Seminyak go to potato head, ku de Ta, La Luciola plus more amazing places (sarong etc)
Bali cafe is a reminder of colonial Bali, charming, good coffee (coffees a bit hit n miss in Bali)
(Bali is not all beauty BTW) Uluwatu cliff top pool resorts late arvo watching surf breaks
Beware the beaches/seafood after rain from November, the waterways wash out foul ‘water’
Hearing about amazing resorts east coast above Denpasar
Ubud is yoga resort heaven – but wear blinkers on your way up, it is a harsh living for locals
I AM FRANTIC!!!!!
I’m Indonesian and when I saw “Selamat Pagi” I was already excited! lol.. And as I scrolled down and read that you and Scott are going to Bali I was like Aaaaaaaa!!!! :O.
Ok, first off, you should really consider going to Gili Island. It’s still raw and more beautiful than Bali since Bali is and has been very popular. Don’t get me wrong, Bali is beautiful but Gili is not yet fully discovered by tourists. When you’re in Bali, go to Ubud and try eating at Bebek Bengil. It’s famous for its ducks dish -> ‘bebek’ means ‘duck’ in Indonesian.
“Potato Head” is a pretty hip spot in Bali, it’s a lounge/ bar.. Ku De Ta, Rock bar are also popular. ( I just read the earlier comment above and she also recommended these places. lol)
Aside from what Eve has said about the nice hotels, I would add Amankila resort. It’s one of the beautiful hotels and pricey too.
Definitely get a massage there! And more on cultural things, search for traditional “Kecak dance” or “Balinese dance”.
If you like outdoor activities, try rafting or parasailing or even bungy jumping ;). I almost always go for rafting everytime I go to Bali. Snorkling and diving are also nice.
I cannot wait to see your pictures from Bali and what you think about the island!!!!
xx,
Alisa
Hey !!!
Selamat Pagi means good morning. Im Malaysian, from Malaysia and Bali is pretty much THE best spots in south east asia !<3
Most of the bali reccommendations youre getting are very high end. I just hope you know that Bali has amazing inns and stays at really low prices. Sure they aren;t first class and fancy, but they are beautiful nonetheless. I stayed at the Coffee Copper. It’s located near Money Forest and I have a feeling you’d love it. THey’re villas, they’re super cheap and super pretty . They have the best pancakes (note : their pancakes are nothing like the usual pancakes we’re all used to. They have actual freash fruit IN the pancakes..)
So broaden your horizons and check all of them out and don’t settle for the most exclusive, first class thing you see. Bali is too beautiful to be limited to that.
xx
Enjoy Bali <3<3
‘selamat pagi’ means ‘good morning’ in malay/indonesian (same language)!
malay and Indonesia are totally have different language, they might sounds similar but for some cases have different meaning and pronounce :)
whoaaa…. Selamat Pagi means Good morning! :)
I have to disagree with anyone who recommends Jimbaran and Seminyak as places to stay, both are horrible tourist traps. The seafood at Jimbaran is nothing to brag about, and Seminyak has cool clubs and hip hotels (I admit the rooftop pool of the W is amazing for drinks) but you could be anywhere in the world – you won’t get a feel of how awesome Bali is.
I like Uluwatu – lots of gorgeous cliiftop villas and resorts to choose from there, but the beaches are meant for experiences surfers. A nice place to stay was Hotel Alila, good for a splurge. For less than 100 euros, there’s Mu Bali, which has incredible open plan villas (no air conditioning) and excellent food and service (the owner is French I think).
Another good coastal option is Canggu -much quieter, and a short drive away from Seminyak if you want to stay somewhere accessible to the restaurants and nightlife of Seminyak. (Hiring drivers in Bali is a good way to get around, and doesn’t cost very much). A lot of expats make their residences here.
Scuba divers head to the east and north of Bali – these areas are far less touristy and allow to observe the rhythms of Balinese life. The hotels here tend to be more basic and the beaches nothing to write home about, but for divers it feels like a haven compared to the madness of Seminyak, Kuta etc. Candidasa and Padang Bai are two towns with lots of dive shops, and Padang Bai is the departure point for ferries to the Gili islands. If you are heading for the Gilis, I would avoid Gili Trawagan and head for Meno or Air.
Ubud is quite charming and has the best street food.
I love Bali and feel lucky that I live a 2-hour flight away…hope you have fun!
Yeah I totally agree. Gilli air and Meno are amazing but give Glli T a miss. Lombok is also one of my favourite places. Canggu is great and a bit quiter than Seminyak. Also Amed is great for diving and snorkelling. Seminyak is full of good restaurants but I couldn’t wait to get out of there…too many people, cars and noise!
Hey Garance,
Its so great that you are going to Bali – you are going to love it! The beaches are not as nice in Thailand for example (they are quite big, without any greenery, and usually with black sand) – but the surrounding with all the hidden temples and jungles is amazing. Spend as much as time you can in Ubud – it is an inland city where most of the temples are located. You just rent a scooter and start exploring :) And you must stay at a place called Honeymoon Guesthouse Ubud (you have them on air bnb). It is paradise, and all the pictures you will see don’t do it justice. You will get your on private two-storey villa, hidden in a lush green jungle, with a small moat around it, and the most stylish balinese bathroom bigger them your bedroom. And all that for like 50e a day (for the whole thing).
WOW!! I can’t believe that you’re going to BALI!
Bali is in my country and I guarantee you’re gonna loooovee it there and never wanna go back!
My recommendation:
Stay:
– St. Regis Nusa Dusa (lovely room, with amazing pool and private beach — but more on the expensive side)
– Ayana Resort Uluwatu (nice room, not THAT expensive, killer view with Rock Bar to hang out and drinks)
– or if you want to go for a more private site — check out Khayangan Estate Bali — unbelievable!
To do:
– Watch kecak dance at uluwatu during sun set
– Must visit: padang-padang beach, Karma Kandara beach/Finn beach club, el Kabron to watch beautiful sunset, potato head and W, KuDeTa (for the nightlife)
– Must eat: Biku, Cafe Bali, Warung Made, Warung Eropa and last but not least, you HAVE TO EAT THIS: Babi Guling Pak Malen (or Pak Malen Suckling Pig) — THE BEST in Bali (don’t even bother to go to Ibu Oka in Ubud, overrated, pricey and not that good anymore)
Also you have to visit Ubud for more a serene and down to earth experience!
Can’t wait to read your stories in Bali! :)

OMG you’re going to Bali? that’s my country!
You should totally go to Bali, Garance! you’re gonna love it.
Why haven’t anyone here recommend the Bulgari resort?
and DON’T miss the Kecak dance
Can’t wait to see the photos :)
Selamat Pagi – simply means Good morning! have fun in bali :) xoxo
If you love Bali as I do, please email me and I will be so happy to send more tips. Off the top of my head, Ubud is the best place on planet Earth. I like Bamboo Indah in Sayan (see also Ibuku) for its full on creativity and sustainability; I love Casa Luna for delicious food, inspiration, and staying there as well. There are so many incredible places; go soon – development is rampant and careless, especially in the south. Jazz fest in August…. BEST food on planet earth. I could go on …. obviously. Cinta
Hi Garance – you have to go to the Gili islands if you’re going to Bali, and Ubud (though I hear it’s now got Eat, Pray, Love tour buses trundling through the town). If you fancy a short and beautiful trek go to Munduk in the mountains for less tourists and peace. Stay away from Kuta!! Think of the Brits on the Costa del Sol – this is the Aussie version. Bali is lovely and the food really amazing, the spas are soooo good…but the island can be really clogged with tourists and rubbish in parts. I’ve been twice though and would definitely go back, the gorgeous parts are truly gorgeous and it’s possible to just avoid the crowds. Happy travels!
Selamat pagi means “good morning” in both Indonesian and Malay.
xo
Oh Garance, if you love spas and massages then Bali is definitely for you! There are so many wonderful places to choose from, it depends on where you are staying. I used the Bali Spas app which was a great resource: https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/bali-spas/id586889722?mt=8
One of my favourite spas is Prana Spa: http://www.pranaspabali.com. To stay in touch with what’s happening in Bali I recommend following Hello Bali Magazine: http://www.hellobalimagazine.com
Good day, Garance!! So glad for your future trip)) We’ve come from Bali 3 days ago…
1. GILI islands – relax and spa.. a lot of restraunts with grilled snapper and other seafood in the evening and so on.. snorkling and a lot of cutest people around – I mean locals, but tourists nowadaws are also cute and quite rare persons
2. JIMBARAN – Cafe MENEGA – 9 000 check-in on FourSquare – everything mmmm….
3. Seafood restraunt on ECHO BEACH
4. Wood carving factory in Ubud also must be visited
and try Coffee LUWAK on it’s plantations as well))
P.S. and please, don’t be afraid of CUTA – lots of surfers and locals and mini shops and local restaurants (it is called WARUNG). I’d like to recommend warung Totemo on Jalan Benesari (Jalan = street) – indonesian, chinese, japan and western quisine – everything is so tasty and cheap)
I hope you would really enjoy your trip!! GOOD LUCK!!!!
I can’t believe no one has recommended Desa Seni. Its a beautiful mini eco resort in Canggu, owned by 2 Americans. The rooms are old Indonesian houses, they also have great yoga classes, so much more authentic than the big chain hotels. You also need to go furniture shopping, beautiful things and very cheap shipping….
We loved so much Bali that we start our one year family trip in Asia with Bali. We will be there in July.
If you go to Ubud, I recommend you to go to a hotel outside the town, we loved the hotels with the view on the Ayung river (at Sayan). Tanah Lot is a beautiful temple but very crowed. I recommend you to stay at the Pan Pacific Nirvana resort hotel. We stood in one of the 8 private villas with private pool. It was wonderful. The wiew on Tanah Lot is gorgeous.
In Lombok, we loved the Lombok Lodge a small boutique hotel and the Qunci villa hotel. Kuta Lombok is nice and roots, you rent a scooter and let’s go. We stood one night at the Novotel, and went to another hotel in the little town, old, roots (very very far from the Grand Hyatt Shanghai standards :)), but we enjoyed jumping on our scooters and driving to the beautiful and empty beaches around Kuta Lombok.
Enjoy your trip, have fun and many massages
THIS is hilarious. I’ve never “sexted” before and this would be me. Eating, watching TV but with two cats on top of me. Thanks for sharing beautiful Garance!
Garance, here I my tips from Bali, I know you have already read tons and I might reapeat some things.
1. Avoid Kuta I was so dissapointed it’s like going to a typical destroyed by tourism beach place in Spain and it is definitely overpriced.
2. Visit the only budhist temple in Bali, it is up at the North of the Island, and it is absolutely amazing, and as there are not many tourist going there (when I went with my friends we were the only ones there) you get a lot peace and tranquility.
3. If you dare, rent a motorcycle to go around Bali. It will surely be the cheapest and fastest method of transportation.
4. Bali is a lot more than beaches and coastal temples, I recomend doing biking “eco” tour from Ubud that shows you typical balinese houses and rice fields and visit the mountains, like Gunung Batur and Gunung Agung, though be aware that you are visiting mounting so it can get cold.
5. An alternative to booking a hotel is renting a villa, which can be an amzing experience, they are usually in the middle of nowhere but if you rent a scooter you can easily get around. They might be a pricy (but they don’t really have be so) but it also gives you privacy and feel more in Bali.
Last thing: go to the Ubud market and buy a wicker bag, they have loads of shapes, sizes and price and they are the perfect bag for summer all day long.
Stayed at 2 gorgeous hotels in Bali. One being the Chedi Club in Ubud. The other the Legian in Seminyak. Highly recommend a bike ride through the rice paddies.
Not to be misssed restaurants are Metisse, Sarong, and Sardine. All gorgeous.
I’m from Indonesia, and i love Bali very much, this is recommended place Garance:
1. Gili Trawangan island (near Bali of course) ,there is an small island without ‘motorised transport’ have a nice beach for snorkeling or diving, and you can go to bar at the night. You can go there with fast boat and lot of travel agent from Bali can take you there.
2. Uluwatu Bali Lace, it’s a store who sell handmade Balinese lace in Kuta/Nusa Dua/Ubud/Sanur
3. El Kabron Restaurant in Pantai Cemongkak, Pecatu street, El Kabron is really cozy restaurant for enjoying sunset with swinging song.
4. don’t forget to watch kecak dance at uluwatu during sun set
Hope you enjoy your summer, btw i want go to Bali on Oktober, when you go there?Hope to see you :)
So excited you’re going to Bali!!! I’m Indonesian (Selamat Pagi means ‘Good Morning’) and I love Bali. Stay out of Kuta. I don’t like it. Ubud is really really nice. It’s my favorite. Eat at Cafe Wayan and anything owned by Janet De Neefe. If you want to go to the beach go to Uluwatu or Seminyak or Lombok. Nusa Dua is where all the fancy hotels are and I’m too poor to go there. The Gili Islands are silly and fun. And they are quite beautiful actually. Have fun!!! xoxo
I’m your blog lover, and I’m a Balinese. Try to go to Ubud, a village in the north of Denpasar, a village full of paintings and sculptures, you can see dolphines at Singaraja, go diving and banana boat-ing at Nusa Dua. :)

Selamat pagi means Good Morning :) I’m from Indonesia :)
