Winter Chic

11 years ago by

Ah it is snowing here today!! Here are some of your tips for staying warm (and chic) when its suuuuuper cold!!

“Garance, The other day I thought about getting a full-body snowsuit. Like the ones parents dress their kids in to go sledding….! I do have a question – where did she get her fabulous hat?”
– From Casey

“I live in Milan and although it’s not as cold as New York it can get pretty chilly here as well! So for me it’s all about the layers, but this time the layers go underneath, where they cannot be seen! I wear bodysuits under my sweaters so I won’t freeze my tummy and under the skinny jeans just a pair of tights. A huge scarf is also a good idea because it can double as a blanket!”
– From Giulia

“Try an irish coffee with milk cream ! It makes cold vanish. :)”
– From Su

“I live in Chicago and it’s -20 degrees Celsius here these days. I’m all for being cute and stylish all year long, but at these temperatures I give up. Some people seem to stand the cold better than others. I see them every day in the streets, not wearing hats or scarfs, with simple woolen coats. Me, on the first day it got so cold, my nose almost froze off my face. So, yeah, I gave up. I like my nose too much!

I ended up owning several winter parkas over time, Woolrich, North Face, Pajar, as well as Sorel snow boots (some of them are not only super warm and waterproof, but CUTE in their own way, too!). The secret of cute winter (REAL winter, the one you’re talking about) to me, is to be comfortable in whatever you wear. That’s the only way to go through the winter looking like a princess from 19th century Russia! :)”
– From Lilena

“You’re so funny Garance – I’m feeling your pain right now. In London, all I want to wear is biker boots with chunky socks in them, looong sweaters (bum warmers) and hats and scarfs. No chic factored in; just warmth. I need to get back in the game. Thanks for this post; it really cheered me up on this cold day.”

  • Fur? Its interesting that no one has mentioned a fur coat or hat or is it a fashion taboo..

  • I’ve actually just asked myself the same question…

  • Garance you will be the death of me! You are so funny! I agree with every word! ;-)

  • Ha! I love reading comments from others suffering through winter weather. I have one tip that may not have been mentioned yet – flannel pajamas. They’re great if you don’t leave the house!

  • We don’t want to talk about fur, but in certain climate countries it’s the best. Can’t complain so far where I live (Lithuania)- this winter it was only minus 20 on the coldest days. -7 now, quite comfortable, and you can even think about the style. At -27, though, you start thinking only about comfort.

  • Je vais en faire hurler plus d’une mais…la fourrure!!! Moi je les achète vintage et même chez Emmaüs, et vous savez quoi? J’ai trop chaud…

  • I gave up in the moment I arrived from South-Spain to Munich. I look like the guy from Michelin with my coat, and I can’t renounce to my healthy. The only way to not give up it’s with the snow hats and the scarfs, the rest….you can imagine: everyone in bigs blacks coats everywhere. :( I envy so much the street style you find!!!

Hanro silk & wool thermal camisole vest, long sleeved crew neck Uniqlo heattech t-shirt (lots of colours), cashmere sweater, Wolford 80 denier tights: add a beautiful skirt & jewellery. Then for outdoors, Falke socks, fitflop mukluk boots, ankle length sheepskin black coat, violet silk lined suede gloves, big Etro cashmere shawl (can be wrapped over my head and face for extra warmth, hat hair being too much to bear)

London isn’t as cold as NY but I really feel the cold, I have terrible circulation & extreme cold brings me out in hives….roll on spring

  • Montreal has had some utterly freezing cold days this year, -29! I wear fur accessories. Love a fur lined had, it can be your best friend. Fur scar around your neck is the only way to go. Winter here is no surprise. I stock up on mitts and gloves and tons of scarves to get through the season. It is fun to find that perfect scarf and adore it for a couple of weeks. Boots are fun weather Sorel or ultra cool knee high. (pun :D) Both have their place. Fashion is not out of the question in the winter. So much to wear! Embrace it :D

    Bisous!

Londres, Chicago, Milan, NYC…
Mais… mais… je n’ai rien à me mettre! SHOPPING!
    Bisous

    Hi Garance
I love autumn and winter, its when you can put on your warm coats, pullovers, fur hats and best boots.
I bought myself a very nice winter parka from PJS Parajumpers, and I love it, the fur lining in the big hood is both super warm and looks really nice.
Living in Iceland means that you never have really warm summers, so most of my clothes can be worn the whole year round.
Greeting and thanks for your great blog.
    Hulda

  • Let’s see… big chunky knit scarves, wool jumpers (my favorites being a Burberry inspired owl jumper and a bright pink cashmere I got in the sale :) ) biker boots, super moisturizing hand cream (Neutrogena Norwegian formula) and Daddy’s beef stew with dumplings :) (here’s the recipe if the mood takes you http://amy-rose89.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/dinner.html) xxx

  • De bonnes idées à retenir :)

    xx.

Pff, you can always look stylish and cute, even if it’s -15°C like here in Vienna ;) I always wear a knee-long down coat (http://www.blaumax.com/product/mantova-coat/#.UQhEIb_Wh8E), the one everyone has over here, over-knee boots and a scarf/gloves/wool hat. Like that, you’re always warm and cozy and pretty! xo
