Wheel Thrown Pottery
8 years ago by
Handmade goods are the best kind of goods. I’m always trying new things and taking new classes (yoga teacher training, cooking classes, you name it, I’ve probably tried it), so it comes as no surprise that next up on my wish list is trying wheel thrown pottery.
Maybe it was that iconic scene from Ghost with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore that instilled in me this love for pottery making, but I really can’t help but love the messiness of the art. So when I discovered the Instagram account, @tortus_copenhagen by Eric Landon, I became totally enthralled and literally liked every picture and video. Not only is it mesmerizing to watch these creations come to life, but the pottery itself is truly beautiful. Thin vases of all different shapes, sizes and colors — totally dreaming of having them all over my apartment one day.
Perhaps I’ll make a visit to the studio when I visit Norway this summer.. a girl can dream, right? Well, in the meantime, do you know of any authentic wheel throwing ceramic places to go to in NYC?
Check out Eric’s website here
I loved this kind of thing as a child! We even tried to build our own wheel and make pots with clay that we had dug out of the bottom of our pool. :)) Not very successful but just trying was great fun, too!

I’m the same way about trying new classes and experimenting????
The 92Y has a pottery class, not sure how authentic the experience is, but it’s something:)
On a different but similar note, Urban Glass is a really cool place to try “handmade” (or should I say mouth made :) glass techniques.
I’m currently taking classes at Choplet in Williamsburg with Bobby Croze–it’s so much fun, and as an artist in different mediums, I am finding it to be a completely new and rewarding challenge!
His studio is in Copenhagen – Denmark ????
Bonjour Amanda,
Pour ne pas te tromper de pays pour tes vacances…Copenhague se trouve au Danemark et non pas en Norvège ;-).
Très beaux vases. J’adore la poterie aussi.
Hello! Thanks so much for the note. I was simply implying that I might as well visit since I am already over there. :)
All my best,
Amanda
I love that you’re featuring handmade goods!
Engaging in the process of making pottery really helps you appreciate the amount of time, dedication, and love it takes to make something as simple as a bowl. I definitely think its an art form everyone should try!
I got hooked years ago and my journey has landed me in Japan in search of more inspiration.
