THINGS WE SLACKED / MAKING ADULT FRIENDS
6 years ago by
Carie:
Ladies
I need advice
I have 2.5 friends in LA and need more because I’m spending too much time with my BF and we’re annoying each other. So, making a real effort to meet and make new friends, without having to go to weird events. I met a nice / cool girl at a not-weird event this summer, we chatted, agreed we should hang, exchanged contact details and thennnn I got super busy with work and didn’t reach out. She didn’t either. How weird is it to reach out this long after? Should I just let her be the friend that got away?
Veronica:
NO
disagree
I’m aggressive about making friends
Bogdana:
Veronica you crack me up
Veronica:
I think it’s a lot like dating, you have to really put yourself out there to get something out of it
Vanessa:
No don’t let her get away! It’s difficult to make friends as an adult
especially if your friends go in decimals…
Carie:
I like the idea of making friends as a kid, like you live on my street, great, we’re buds. but it’s sooooo hard as an adult
Bogdana:
But wait, V, what if Carie is not the type of girl who is aggressive in dating either?
Veronica:
Also friends are TOO IMPORTANT. it’s so necessary and we don’t talk about it’s importance enough
I WILL MAKE HER BE AGRESSIVE
(kidddinng)
Vanessa:
(Sends link to article) “The Challenge of Making Friends as an Adult”
“The period for making B.F.F.’s, the way you did in your teens or early 20s, is pretty much over. It’s time to resign yourself to situational adult friends.”
Bogdana:
IT’S HARD
Carie:
But, how do you non-creepily reach out after so much time has passed?
Veronica:
I slacked this awhile back but in Japan, older women are so lonely they are committing small crimes to purposefully go to jail to find a community
Carie:
AND, how soon is too soon post-event/meeting to reach out
Vanessa:
I wish I could be aggressive. I like people to beg for friendship
Carie:
Wait WHAT Veronica
Veronica:
That’s true Van
Vanessa:
omg V that’s almost cute
Veronica:
i begged you to be my friend
Bogdana:
Love Japanese women. Very inventive.
Veronica:
by aggressively hugging you
Vanessa:
Really? I don’t recall the begging
Veronica:
(I feel like i’m going to get in trouble for all my aggressive talk)
Bogdana:
no, we all should learn from you
Vanessa:
V’s current BFF is an old intern. Her future BFF is her physical therapist. Listen to her.
Christina:
I think if you reach out to her after all this time she will probably be flattered!
Veronica:
(Sends link to article) “Older Japanese Women are Shoplifting to Find Community and Meaning in Jail”
Everything Van is saying is true
Christina:
I would be flattered if someone did that to me
Veronica:
also don’t forget Emma, who i stalked in my kettlebell class, and turned out she was PR contact i was already emailing with
Bogdana:
That makes me wanna cryyy (the article)
Carie:
Ok, good. I’m so glad to hear that. I was stressing about the not reaching out and then the reaching out
Vanessa:
How long has it been, Carie?
Bogdana:
No Carie, you should reach out. Be a hero
Carie:
like two months
Gabby:
Reach out…I would also start by telling her you asked your coworkers for help before reaching out! If she is cool and worth being a friend, she will find this entertaining…if not then you can move on!
Veronica:
just send her this slack
Carie:
I’ll send her this slack chain
Veronica:
lol
Carie:
so she knows I’m not insane
or that I’m way too stressed about the entire thing, which is super weird
Bogdana:
It’s probably already on the edit calendar. isn’t it?
Gabby:
hahah
Linne:
lmao
Carie:
knowing veronica…
Veronica:
shhhhh
Carie:
this is a real life problem, not just for editorial fluff
LA is HARD
Christina:
I think it’s also kind of like dating where you just need to put the energy out there
Carie:
people live so far and drive everywhere
Veronica:
but for real, we never leave highschool, we’re all insecure snowflakes
Caitlin:
wait
Linne:
Yes, like manifesting!
Caitlin:
i am just seeing this
Christina:
yes Linne
Caitlin:
I don’t pay attention to this channel.
Carie:
I fucking hate talking about manifesting
it’s so LA
Caitlin:
Carie – GO FOR IT.
Bogdana:
Carie, take it from an immigrant, it’s hard everywhere
Christina:
it’s true though
Caitlin:
I am doing the same thing right now.
Linne:
I’m trying to manifest a bf but its not working
Christina:
I did this when I broke up with my ex last year and I just put the energy out there
and it worked
Carie:
I feel like a kid on the playground. Like, hey, I’m carie, I’m new here, wanna play tetherball / be my bud?
Caitlin:
I can forward you the email I sent
if you’d like a template.
Carie:
oh please do
shit
Christina:
hahaha
Carie:
wait, I only have her phone number
Veronica:
you would have a template
Caitlin:
oh, you can take parts and text.
its kind of funny.
Carie:
I can do this, you have given me the strength to power through a weird reach out
Caitlin:
YOU CAN DO IT
Christina:
go girl!
Veronica:
in 5 years you’ll be the godmother of her children
Vanessa:
(sends gif of Meryl Streep intensely encouraging someone on stage at the Oscars)
Carie:
watch her be a nutter
Vanessa:
GO CARIE
Carie:
I wish Meryl was my friend
Vanessa:
Don’t we all
Sarah:
Carie! Keep us posted on how it goes!!!
Carie:

thanks, buds
Mary:
